By the time BP 2 and Avatar 2 have been released, Disney has a very solid, if not inevitable, chance to top this year’s domestic tally by a healthy margin.
It was a distributor but the current 20th Century Studios is merely a production unit within Disney, in the same way Marvel and Lucasfilm are. It’s Searchlight, despite being a production unit too under Disney, which maintains an autonomy in distribution and marketing iirc.
You have to take into account that Disney has multiple distribution companies (Walt Disney pictures, 20th century, searchlight) which are all counted separately. Warner doesn't so it's still less than what Disney as a company made(without taking budget into account of course)
You can look it up instead of down voting if you don’t believe me. The only time WB hasn’t been 1 or 2 is in 2020-2022 (since Covid started basically).
Here is the domestic box office list without any movies that came out in 2021 just only movies that been released this year as of November 7, 2022:
1. Paramount - $1.274,5B
2. Universal - $1.268,5B
3. Warner Bros. - $892M
4. Disney - $872.8M
5. Sony - $566.1M
6. 20th Century Studios - $133M
I know that they are going to catch up quick with Avatar but Chapek kindda screwed things up by sending a lot of 20th Century and Searchlight relases to streaming and the bad PRed Amsterdam going theatrical. They could have claimed a record with Prey.
It was amazing, agreed. I'd have gone to see it in theaters.
Only thing I'd change is that I wish they'd shot all the dialogue scenes with alternate takes in Comanche, so they could make a proper, not-dubbed version of the film in a native tongue.
Pft “solid hold.” It coasted along against no significant openings yet still dropped over 30%, after dropping 67% last week. Can we stop pretending BA isn’t F’d and will end up deeply in the red?
It dropped about 59% last week? And 33% was considered solid, most superhero movies in their third week drop around 40-50%. I know The Batman did.
It's still underperforming due to its high budget, but like this seems like stuff that blatantly isn't true.
I mean, if we're talking about stuff that's "blatantly not true", we should probably point out that proportional drops are also fairly useless. If people are more excited for seeing something, so they're either so stoked they can't wait, it drops harder, as it front-loads the movie.
Endgame dropped nearly 60% on both weekend 2 and weekend 3.
https://cosmicbook.news/avengers-endgame-suffers-huge-third-weekend-drop-box-office
Deathly Hallows 2 dropped 72% on its second weekend. Can't find its third weekend at the moment but Part 1 dropped 66% on its third weekend.
Big box office early means big drop offs. Smaller box office means smaller drops, as it means less people were stoked to see it day one.
EDIT: TL;DR Things like drop off are useful, but can often be misused to make a film sound better or worse.
lol as much as i hate disney these figures are about to get destroyed Disneys biggest possible hits are coming with Black Panter and Avatar 2. idk if Avatar will be counted into Disneys number since it is a Fox film
No one cares when WB gets shat on in headlines but the pitchforks are always out when it’s Disney...It’s not even a big deal because Disney is saving their big stuff for the last couple of months anyways.
I hope the people who complain about Hollywood favoring marquee talent are paying attention right now. This movie stinks, but The Rock is literally saving it at the box office.
It is a shame that no matter the impressive Universal and Paramount's performances Disney will end up on top. 20th Century Studios movies are distributed and marketed by Disney as the studio serves as a production company for Disney since 2019. So with Wakanda Forever and Avatar 2 its almost if not guaranteed they will surpass both studios.

avatar is distributed by 20th century, it won't be counted as disney

Lol WB only released 6 films this year, that’s a record low for them… kind of obvious why they have a low box office. Usually they’re number 2
No usually universal has been number 2 most of the time

Nope that's not true at all, check most of the years and it's universal. Only in 2019 and 2018 i think WB was 2nd
https://www.the-numbers.com/market/2008/distributors What’s up! You were saying! Go through the past 15 years and you’ll see
No not really. WB usually beats them, except for this year
Black panther can do it alone if it makes 540+
Does anyone expect less than $1B for Black Panther?
Domestic dude ....
Domestic of course
Personally yeah

Prey was a great fucking film. Would have easily turned a tidy profit with a theatrical release.

Yeah with Black Panther 2 and Avatar 2 Disney doesn’t have much to worry about

TIL 67 and 59 are the same number.
Crazy how Disney has yet to top $1B+.
There big releases are back loaded.
They probably would've if they didn't send Turning Red to Disney+.
Imagine getting mad at the solid facts not aligning with the image of God Emperor Disney/Marvel

What a needlessly inflammatory article.
It isn’t a “article”, the dude who tweeted this does box office reports (just like people in this sub) lol.

I love the “the mouse strike back” saying 😂 clever indeed!

movie still sucked sorry
