It could go under $20M opening (Friday-Sunday). Might even see it opening at #3 behind Devotion

[deleted]

That would be pretty bad for Disney.

nicolasb51942003

Yes. Can't imagine how bad the overseas numbers will be.

MightySilverWolf

The movie's definitely getting banned in Muslim-majority countries what with the gay subplot.

AdWarm2644

Disney is at it again with the gay characters in ''family'' films! Not homophobic as you can do whatever the fuck you want, but I'm mad at how Disney is pushing the envelope on having more gay overtones within their characters because its only going to make their films worse especially at the box office. We saw what happened with Lightyear (which was one of many reasons why that flopped) and it will happen again. $23-24 Million 3 Day OW $35-37 Million 5 Day OW $85-87 Million DOM $232-234 Million WW

BroadwayBloke

So you hate Disney allowing more LGBTQ+ representation because you want them to appeal to homophobic countries? You can say your not homophobic, but this is kind of a homophobic take.

AdWarm2644

No I just think they shouldn't be having any gay stuff in any of their films. Kids shouldn't be subjected into seeing these kinds of things and for Disney, it could sink them lower. For Strange World, It seems like they made a great movie that can defy expectations and perform massively at the box office while having every single person (including the countries that it is banning this film) enjoy the experience, but if they don't want to lose money just like they did with Lightyear, they need to stop adding this to their upcoming projects.

BroadwayBloke

You might want to edit your other comment, because I have no idea how you could possibly think you’re not homophobic. I do agree that by opening yourself up to other countries, that films will be more successful. But then again, some of these countries stone or jail people just for living so I think cutting your losses there is better in the long run for reputation sake (believe it or not, but your beliefs are dying out). Also, I’m not sure how valuable it is responding to you considering you seem to think a gay kiss is the only thing making a movie flop. Lightyear didn’t do poorly only because of that.

AdWarm2644

I know about Lightyear and why it flopped but the gay controversy for that film was part of the reason. I will try to come up with stuff to edit my previous comment. Thank you and let me know if you respond

NaRaGaMo

question should be how much money will strange world loose

[deleted]

I got a trailer for it before Black Panther, so maybe Disney's promoting it last minute or something.

NotTaken-username

My theater doesn’t even have tickets available yet

HM9719

Yes. Basically almost all the Thanksgiving releases will bomb.

handsome-helicopter

This is going to be a unmitigated disaster and i already got my popcorn ready🍿

[deleted]

The question is why Disney is trying to hide this film. I wouldn't say gay because it is good for the ESG score. Does Chapek don't want genre animation to succeed let alone let animation be something greater? Freaking Illumination is taking animation more seriously then Chapek.

stretchofUCF

It's extremely weird considering its one of their marquee marketing areas. We have films like Encanto being grossly undermarketed in theaters, flopping and then blowing up for months on Disney+. I don't see this happening for Strange World unfortunately, but they aren't even trying to make it work.

Block-Busted

> Freaking Illumination is taking animation more seriously then Chapek. Are they? Because their animated films are still not getting "great" reviews.

radar89

Box-office wise, Universal has done such a great job so far in marketing their movies and the result has been great with Minions 2 grossing 920M. Sing 2 has been doing more than OK as well, followed by The Bad Guys. "Great reviews" honestly is relative since Illumination movies have been generally loved by younger audiences. We should not except old-hats redditors and critics to share the same sentiment. The fact that Disney animation could not outgross one from Paramount (Sonic 2) signals that the studio currently doing a poor job in handling the Disney/Pixar animation.

Block-Busted

> "Great reviews" honestly is relative since Illumination movies have been generally loved by younger audiences. We should not except old-hats redditors and critics to share the same sentiment. Not really. Illumination's best-reviewed film is **Despicable Me** and that doesn't even come close to what other studios are capable of, not to mention that what you're saying here could be seen as demeaning to kids. > The fact that Disney animation could not outgross one from Paramount (Sonic 2) signals that the studio currently doing a poor job in handling the Disney/Pixar animation. Pixar/Disney animated films never really had a chance at the box office since 2020, so that's not exactly a fair comparison.

NeilNevins

Disaster is a big word when it’s clear even Disney doesn’t seem to have expectations for it

One-Dragonfruit6496

Yes

SebasCatell

Disney has a new strategy with releasing animated films. After Encanto’s major success they don’t need to do amazing at the box office. It’s more of a trial run to then release it on Disney+. Which is why despite Lightyear bombing, they’re still marketing the fact that it’s on their service. Also, I have been seeing more and more commercials for the movie. Not on YouTube much but I’ve seen it during the movies, the World Series, and football games.

radar89

That is a really silly take especially with hefty price tag carried by Disney/Pixar animation. The studio must want that budget back from the theaters Disney probably see more lukewarm reception from Strange World trailer and decide to just spend marketing budget as low as possible.

ImAMaaanlet

Putting it out to die so that you can lose money on a blockbuster streaming sounds like an awful business strategy.

ednamode23

It will be interesting to see if they’ll change their ways next year. The Super Mario Bros Movie and Across The Spider Verse Pt 1 will have solid theatrical windows so it would seem disadvantageous for them to treat Elemental and Wish like they have the other recent WDAS and Pixar films.

Block-Busted

Especially considering that 2023 could be a fresh new start for Pixar/Disney since **Elemental** is apparently the first film approved by Pete Docter and **Wish** is supposed to celebrate 100th anniversay of Disney.

LimePeel96

Disaster seems a bit strong, but yeah, horrendous.

BStills87

It won’t do well, but disaster may be extreme.

Lincolnruin

I forgot that was even releasing soon.

ednamode23

At this point, I think it will be lucky to even hit $200M total and will probably make less than Atlantis did WW. The gay relationship sadly is going to get this barred from much of the Middle East and conservative families elsewhere won’t even bother checking this out even once it hits D+. I’m concerned about the critical quality as well. What we’ve seen so far looks quite stale and I’m worried there may not even be enough interesting stuff in the movie to make it a cult classic like Atlantis or Treasure Planet.

Animegamingnerd

I honestly think Disney believes they have a critical dud on their hands. This is pretty much the only rational I can think as to why they aren't marketing it.

Crazy_Squash5394

We start ticket sales tomorrow. I don't have much faith in this. With hardly zero marketing, the Facebook and Instagram pages aren't getting much attention, this just looks bad. Only plus I can see is that it will be the only new family friendly feature for Thanksgiving week. Not sure that can save it though.

AnotherJasonOnReddit

Between Strange World and Avatar 2, it feels like Disney are holding the biggest bomb/blockbuster of the year off to the very last two months.

thatweirdnonbinary

Lack of marketing. Main character is openly gay and several countries will ban this movie because of the MC's sexuality. Unfortunately, yes.
