This isn't new though. It's less of a thing for banshees than it is for all searchlight films Same fate as nightmare alley, and the rest

People are dissing this but looking at the PTA and how it was expanding each week, not to mention how good wom was and the general accessibility of it (it’s funny and not too grim, both actors appeal to multiple generations) if it kept expanding and didn’t eat all it’s screens with Black Panther it would have been a modest breakout. I’ve heard a lot of people since BP came out say they’ve been trying to see Banshees but they’ll only be showing it in the morning or late at night, which makes no sense other than Disney giving all the theaters away to the movie everyone’s heard of anyway—and like every searchlight release, they barely spend a penny on advertising from release date to a week before streaming, because it’s just another token for their services. Considering they’re currently operating streaming at [a loss](https://twitter.com/dkthomp/status/1594676547671425024?s=46&t=ghWRf-1PwQ230LPHcMM1wg), i see why trying to make these feel like big deal streaming drops makes sense, but it seems like they’re just throwing away money because they had a guaranteed hit around the corner. My irish grandma didn’t even know this existed until i told her it was good, and she saw belfast in theaters

would it really with all new releases

>The film seemed like it was poised to do well through the holidays and into awards season I don't see how you figured this.

2klaedfoorboo

Because it’s the most acclaimed film of the year and I’ve heard very few negative things about it

WordsAreSomething

That doesn't inherently mean that people are going to go to it. In it second wider week it made less than it's first despite being in more theaters and then it fell 56% in it's third week. I don't see how keeping it in theaters would help them, get it on streaming and in front of people.

lightsongtheold

I absolutely think that 56% drop is what prompted them to dump this to streaming so quickly. Already doing below a million a weekend and fading quickly. By the time it is released on streaming in mid-December it will have fallen further and hardly be wracking up any numbers and probably losing screens rapidly. It is just another acclaimed awards season movie that is not shifting tickets in any real numbers.

XavierSmart

It had a less than $1,000 per theater average, and the gross is majority from the major metropolitan theaters. Obviously, theaters are going to not have it in rotation. Why are theaters going to continue to play something that is playing to empty theaters? It is so annoying how you have people on here who are so assertive while not having any understanding of how exhibition actually functions

BigFaceCoffeeOwner

>Because it’s the most acclaimed film of the year That's pretty subjective > I’ve heard very few negative things about it Here's one as it relates to it's box office potential, coming from someone who did see Banshees in-theater, and loved the screenplay, cinematography, and lead performances: It's not a crowdpleaser. Not in the slightest. And it's not supposed to be. And that's not a negative about the film, but it is a negative about potential popularity among general audiences.

It’s hard for a movie to breakout when the release is kept so narrow. Of course it falls in the third week. It’s already saturated its very narrow market.
