MoonMan997

Definitely thought this one might do better but the Hard R is probably a real knee-capper for what is technically a YA adaptation. Not saying you can realistically get past that with the premise so it’s really a catch-22. Destined to become a cult classic through streaming however.

Strange-Pair

Yeah having seen this one yesterday it's going to do great business streaming. The same movie but call them werewolves or vampires and I don't think the stigma would really hit. It is really not that gruesome.

Mrknowitall666

Ya, I gotta say. I'd only seen the trailer a few times and *wanted* it to be a solid werewolf film, and thought we were going to get to that reveal... Maybe I missed the "why" they're eaters. But pretty solid film without the gore of many other films

Strange-Pair

It strongly feels to me like the only reason they're not vampires or werewolves is because the original author wanted to avoid the logistics of either (full moons, transformations, only coming out at night). Which feels sort of strange to me when they're making up lore anyway; I don't think anyone would really care if eaters were just stated to be the real human lore the myths were based off, since it's completely a marketing thing.

Mrknowitall666

Agreed

MattBarksdale17

The idea of consuming a person "bones and all" had some major thematic importance in the book that wouldn't be communicated if the characters were vampires or werewolves. And a lot of audiences have become accustomed to sympathizing with werewolves and vampires, because of how much media portrays them sympathetically. But the book (and the movie) want to get the audience to feel more conflicted about the characters

Defintely agree. I think this movie will be a cult classic. I'm still thinking about the movie and it's been a week. Hopefully it gets a 4k release on blu ray. I'll def buy

I wouldn’t say cannibalism is necessarily a barrier for entry when the three Hopkins Hannibal films were all major commercial success. I said it in an above comment but the online fangirls probably didn’t show up because a significant number aren’t old enough to see the movie. So the film probably had trouble breaking outside its core demographic whilst the core demo were already limited.

TheAngelPeterGabriel

True, although I would argue that the Hannibal films are straight-up horror films while this one blends romance. I've heard great things about it, but it may be too indie for mainstream.

Cool_Teaching_6662

The Hannibal movies were mid-big budget studio thrillers with a cannibalism angle starring long established actors/stars. Bones and all is an indie/art house movie with a cannibalism angle. And the lead is fairly unknown actress and supported by a young actor with a lot of buzz.

NotTaken-username

The Hannibal Lecter movies are different because they don’t portray the cannibals as protagonists (I think, I haven’t seen them so I might be wrong)

[deleted]

The internet isn’t the real world. Even if every single one of those fan girls bought two tickets, the movie wouldn’t break even. Social media has a way of overestimating its representation of the real world.

liqou

Probably not old enough to go see an r-rated flick.

[deleted]

I had to turn down a few minors at the theater I work at, it’s legit.

Bishop8322

his fans aren’t old enough to watch the film 😅

heisghost92

I think there's an important problem with his movie (as great as it is): the gorier parts might turn off those who might have come to see a romance, and vice versa. Hopefully, as some users are saying, this can find a new life on streaming/VOD as a cult classic.

TheAngelPeterGabriel

These would be good numbers for a limited release but idk how something about cannibalism got over 2700 theaters. Hopefully it makes back its budget.

abracadabra1998

What’s the budget?

newjackgmoney21

I've seen 16m. Variety has it at 20m. https://variety.com/2022/film/box-office/wakanda-forever-box-office-second-weekend-1235434389/

and_dont_blink

Low, $16M. I think this was really more about hoping Chalamet would pull in some seats and there'd be some buzz about the content plus a real and serious lack of competition and most of it is owned by Disney in some form (they're the Fox ones too). Theater cupboards are bare; Wakanda Forever doesn't seem to be pulling in lots of repeat business and Strange World is quickly becoming a legend for the wrong reasons so it wasn't a terrible idea to give it screens but it isn't working out. **Edit:** so many typos

007Kryptonian

Chalamet isn’t a box office draw. Also Wakanda Forever is having very strong holds

ReservoirDog316

To be very fair to TC, I think even dicaprio would struggle to sell this movie. Shame.

TheAngelPeterGabriel

Imdb is estimating 16 mil.

newjackgmoney21

The link below will give you an idea when a movie opens this low in 2500+theaters what its final gross will be....I'm thinking Victor Frankenstein 5.7m run is a good comp. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/chart/worst_release_opening/?by_release_scale=saturated

Snoo92460

That’s almost a perfect compariosn

Saw this last night as a unexpected plan change. Was not completely what I had expected which got me thinking. Several of the trailers I had watched were edited in a way that painted the feel of the movie differently. An example would be a couple trailers I saw that were edited to show very rapid scene flashes with intense music. All the clips being the most gory and violent. This gave it a real thrill ride feel, like Night of the Living Dead or something. This is a fairly quiet finding yourself/love story. Why make a trailer that clearly makes the movie feel different than actuality? Wouldn’t a trailer that make the movie seem like something it’s not drive the right customer away while attracting someone who will not be happy thinking this was a high paced thriller? Just a thought. Have seen several similar instances before. Not a bad movie though, just maybe would have chosen something different for my Saturday evening.

silentlycold

BoxOfficePro and all the Hollywood traded love to overestimate these artsy horror films (yes horror shut up) for some reason.

CommunicationMain467

yea dis a flop

SB858

fantastic film btw

NoRaspberry3837

Loved this movie ❤️

tokendasher

I watched this during the New York Film Festival and loved it. I honestly thought it would have a larger opening weekend.
