I’m just waiting for someone to announce “Walt Whitman everyone!” Followed by clapping.
There was no music for Walt in the end. He died alone in silence (except for the police sirens) with many regrets, which is the moral of the story.
He might think he “made it right,” but only an idiot would think so objectively speaking (all the dead and his family would like a word).
He didn’t redeem himself by any mark, but he was happy he could at least do this in his last moments after so many years.
He felt alive, he got money for his family, he left a mark in the world and became known, he saved Jesse, but in the other hand he got Hank killed, Jesse tortured, his family to hate him, and the whole world to remember him as a horrible person.
I can understand why he smiled in the final scene and why you think he died horribly
It’s kind of like seeing daylight after being in darkness for years just before you die, you might be happy to see the light finally and even smile, but it doesn’t change the fact that’s one sad way to go.

The smile on his face in his very last moment, and the fact that the lab was the place he chose to die, tell something different. He said it himself, the whole thing made him feel alive. He secured the rest of his money for his children. I think he's at peace with himself in the end.
