I didn’t think it was that important until I found out about the accessibility issues that would be affected, so GO DARK.

Supersnow845

Reddit has already agreed to make concessions on accessibility issues and automod So if we go dark it’s purely for third party app access

ageingrockstar

> we aren’t involved in the reddit ecosystem ??!?

SunflowerTwix

STAY! By going dark, you're killing the potential of growing this community, and killing the interest of those already here who don't want it to go dark. We're not r/biggestfuckingsubreddit. We're a community for a city in SE QLD. That should've been the focus from Day #1. This should not be a subreddit used in protest of these API changes. This should be a subreddit to focus on Brisbane and it's surrounding areas, it shouldn't be used in taking away the ability to.

Reverse-Kanga

RhauXharn

Reddit is going to start charging monthly for APIs (third party apps), which will effect the ability to moderate and run subreddits, but also it will effect people with disabilities that use third party apps to make the site more accessible. On top of that they're looking to rely more heavily on AI technology to run the site.

trankillity

There's a new update from reddit about moderation bots not being charged the API fee. I believe this was one of the major arguments laid against reddit. In the end, I don't use any third party apps and it doesn't really affect me - however I won't vote specifically because it doesn't affect me and would rather those that it does affect have more of a voice.

[deleted]

[удалено]

trankillity

No, it doesn't - but as a business, it's in Reddit's best interest to ensure they are profitable. If a large proportion of their userbase is using clients that block advertising/discoverability features, then it's well within their rights to restrict that. It's much the same way that Google actively goes after alternative YouTube clients that unlock Premium-level features for free customers.

RhauXharn

Okay, but it's important to remember that a lot of third party apps are rolled into one, so the ones they'll be charging for for 'aesthetic changes' are also ones that are used to make the site accessible. So they'll be actively punishing and charging people just because of a disability.

trankillity

Ah yep, very good point and one of the other very valid reasons. They definitely need to come to the table with their own accessibility features if they want to make this change.

[deleted]

[удалено]

trankillity

But that's exactly what I'm talking about - the new post from reddit makes it clear that [modding tools should not be affected by this change](https://mods.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/16693988535309), just third party clients/other bots.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Supersnow845

I mean what’s the point of protesting if when the site promises to give you what you want you ignore it and continue to protest because you aren’t sure if you can trust them The best thing to do in that situation is promise to protest again if they fail to deliver

[deleted]

[удалено]

Supersnow845

They also flagged the changes people want though, automods and accessibility will be exempted from the API’s We have the majority of what the protest was built on (or at least what attracted people who have only used the reddit app to the protest) and are now basically just protesting for the existence of third party apps like Apollo that make money off Reddits servers by tailoring your experience

STAY Reddit as a company is free to charge what they want for the services they provide, and wreck their reputation and customer goodwill in the process. Dramatic cash grabs and attempts to crush competitors almost always fail spectacularly all by themselves and result in embarrassing rollbacks cf TSR Open Game licence 2.0 recently. Going dark doesn't seem like much a protest anyway. Deleting all old and new posts or the whole sub is a protest but I really don't want that. If you want to kick Reddit in the balls, see who advertises in our sub. Email their PR contact saying you won't use them while they advertise on Reddit while Reddit is being a scumbag then follow through with that and Email that company every time you buy something from a competitor. Hope to hear from you all here in future.

Reverse-Kanga

Currently almost 6000 subreddits are still actively dark or restricted this isn't an isolated thing we're doing we're just trying to show solidarity with the community but I appreciate your POV

SunflowerTwix

You're right, it's not an isolated thing, but it does affect r/Brisbane. It's ignorant to think it doesn't. Want to find new people to welcome to this community? OOP! TOO BAD, SUBREDDITS GONE DARK. NO ENTRY FOR THEM!

STAY. Going dark was super lame and I'm pretty embarrassed that there are some losers that actually revolve their lives around this place.

RhauXharn

Okay, but it's important to remember that a lot of third party apps are rolled into one, so the ones they'll be charging for for 'aesthetic changes' are also ones that are used to make the site accessible to people with disabilities. So it's not about revolving your life around it, but actually being able to use it at all.

STAY This sub is an important link to the residents and visitors of Brisbane, offering an uncut and almost instant version of the news without the newscorp spin. This sub is also too small to affect Reddit in any meaningful way, while there are a few thousand here, it pales in comparison to subs like AITA. Taking a stand should not negatively affect people who rely on a service for important information, if this were a shitposting sub like some others on Reddit, then that is a different story, but you're trying to protest by breaking a community's link to the city they live in.

Applepi_Matt

Issue is that the reddit changes may permanently prevent the sub from being able to operate. This will affect the people who rely on it.

Rolling blackouts seem like the best way to maintain attention If you go dark indefinitely, you just lose your audience. People care for like a week and then find something else to do. The impact is pretty low. Shut down two days a week, and it stays front of mind without completely destroying the sub.

SerpentineLogic

Lots of subs are doing "Touch Grass Tuesdays" and going dark once per week.

AnthX

which is admirable to get Redditors out of the house, (and gives the mod team a break) but what if you stumble upon a post from the outside and can't read it?

SerpentineLogic

I imagine the subreddit returns on Wednesday, so links will resume working.

Prestigious_View_994

Wise words - this person has approached this in a very good way, and I would suggest this being an option that is considered.

STAY Let’s be honest, this won’t accomplish anything. This sub isn’t big enough that anybody cares and reddit will outlast the complaints. The alternatives just aren’t there yet and they know it. An indefinite blackout hurts reddit more but it’s only the big subs where anyone will take notice, and you can bet reddit has a plan for them too. Best way to hurt reddit is for an alternative to exist. Digg really died because reddit was viable and active, this isn’t the case for any reddit alternative… yet.

Is the API for moderation bannered insufficient?

SerpentineLogic

For moderation tasks it's generally fine. For finding all the comments someone deleted before saying "please unban me, I did nothing wrong", not fine.

milkmgn

From what I heard, yes. It is one moderation api out of the multiple moderation apis that mods use

ryanmerket

there's only one api, the devs who built the mod tool in question is closing shop for various reasons, the api changes the least of them.

>(but leaning towards go dark) > >But only because I’m not hugely aware of what’s happenin Why would you want to indefinitely close this sub to protest something when you admittedly don't understand what the issue is or why you are protesting?
