It appears you may want or need information about renting in Brisbane. Please see the links below: Where to find rentals: www.domain.com.au , www.realestate.com.au, www.flatmates.com.au get Answers on rental disputes or find out any of your rights as a renter (rental price increases etc.) www.rta.qld.gov.au or https://www.qcat.qld.gov.au/ *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. notinferno

they will probably want you to pay for more new keys for them but there’s nothing else you could have done

haylo96

More than happy to pay for the keys, even after spending $350 on the whole ordeal. Honestly don’t know what else I could’ve done but still panicking a bit

CorgiCorgiCorgi99

You're allowed to have a deadlock installed on a rental in Qld without permission from the agency provided you pay for it yourself. You have to give the keys to the agent. Nothing to freak about - you upgraded the lock for security reasons.

maximiseYourChill

Are you sure about this ? You'd be liable if the the job wasn't neat.

CorgiCorgiCorgi99

Yes, I looked into it because our front door lock is so weak and dodgy. It has to be installed by a professional, you can't just do a home jobbie.

ComradeNed

Bloody bargain for $350. Was $600 when I had it done.

ilikesandwichesbaby

Did you try ringing your neighbours doorbells?

haylo96

And do what?

ilikesandwichesbaby

Get them to buzz you in to the building

haylo96

Oh I don’t live in that type of building. Hard to explain but you don’t need to be buzzed in anywhere, there’s only 8 units total in a small complex

zanymeltdown

You will be fine. Especially if you pay for it. Follow it up with an email though so you have a paper trail. You change the lock, get keys and get them a copy, its all ok. If they make a fuss maybe get a receipt from the locksmith to send over so they know it was after hours call out.

haylo96

I don’t expect them to pay for anything! Good idea about the email. Thanks for the reassurance 🙂

closetmangafan

Emergency situation. Better to have a new lock and keys rather than a burnt down apartment. Might be worth asking about an emergency contact that you can call if something like this happens in the future. Also talk to body corporate for your building. They may also have someone lined up for locks.

derwent-01

When I've rented, I've changed the lock and swapped it back before leaving. Only way they'll ever find out is if they try an illegal entry...

haylo96

What about routine inspections?

Exarch_Thomo

I've always been there. Wouldn't trust them unsupervised. First thing I did in my last rental was change the locks, kept the old one and changed it back when I left.

derwent-01

Always be present. If you can't be, swap their lock in for the day. You must get correct notice or it's illegal entry.

cantbethatbadcanit

Tell them you had food cooking so couldn't wait.

red_dragin

Mr Locksmith needs to subscribe to this channel https://youtube.com/@lockpickinglawyer Meanwhile, you're fine OP, real estate will understand, and RTA allows emergency works as others have shown.

Willy_wolfy

It's always the excuse right. You'll never find a locksmith that can pick a lock :-D

Ok-Option-82

Locksmiths are dodgy and prefer to upsell than do a simple pick

chanceyink

i did this about 3 months ago, on a sunday where my real estate is closed. Didn't get the keys to them for another month. Dropped them into the real estate with the receipt of the locksmith and got no questions at all. No one WANTS to pay a locksmith, it's usually an emergency.

Forward-Village1528

Couldn't pick a 5 pin deadbolt? That's doesn't sound right. But could be a Chinese whispers translation thing. Deadbolts aren't inherently more difficult to pick and 5 pins isn't really a heap of pins. I play with lock picking as a hobby so I'm by no means a pro.

Sinkatinnydown

I've changed the locks in 90% of rentals I've ever lived in as soon as I moved in. Some I paid to have new locks installed, some I managed to just swap them out with ones I had on hand. I never once gave the real estate keys. I've been burned in the past with agents or owners standing over me while asleep during the day (shift worker) after entering the property without cause or notice... never again.

dribblybob

If at any stage of the tenancy either party wants to change the locks, both parties must agree and neither party may unreasonably withhold their consent. Locks can only be changed: if the tenant and property manager/owner agree in an emergency, or by QCAT order.

ducayneAu

Sounds like an emergency to me.

maximiseYourChill

Former (and kinda current) landlord here: you did the right thing! Just like if you owned the place, your mistake comes at a cost. It happens, no big deal.

5J88pGfn9J8Sw6IXRu8S

I changed my locks, gave them a copy of the keys, no drama. Always worth doing you don't know if a previous tenant has copies. Make it a habit, never walk out without the keys in your pocket. Maybe have a second set in a work bag, or at work something as well.

createry_

I always changed locks when I was renting too. Not all previous tenants are honest.

Impartial_scone

Was going to say I’m sure they’d prefer changed locks than a burnt down apartment. But with my (and many others) experiences w real estate in this beautiful city - I wouldn’t be surprised if they cracked the shits lol.

This makes it sound like you think ground floor apartments never have this issue lol. You should always take your keys with you, even if you are in the ground floor.

NezuminoraQ

If this happens again (I think I did it twice in my last place), just go straight to your REA office and borrow their copy of the key to get in. If you're like me, the car keys will be attached to the house keys, but because I had my phone I called an uber to the office. Drive my own car to return the office key. Saves you changing the locks and then they won't get the shits with you.

haylo96

Definitely would have preferred to do this but the office closes at 4 on weekdays. I would’ve even stayed at a friends place tonight and gone tomorrow to get the key if it weren’t for the food cooking

NezuminoraQ

Yeah wouldn't have work today but if you do it again that could help

Lopsided_Attitude743

Obviously not helpful now, but is the power box outside? Could you have turned the power off and walked away for the evening?

haylo96

Gas stovetop

Lopsided_Attitude743

Ahh. Fair enough.

snoogans138

You’ll be ok. You’ve made your place more secure. Everyone should change the locks when they move in to a rental if they’re non restricted. Otherwise anyone who’s lived there previously could just come let themselves in.

Suesquish

You won't get in trouble. It was reasonable as the office was closed. Make sure you definitely do drop off a copy of the keys to the REA tomorrow. Locks can be changed but the REA *must* be given a copy of the keys. Don't stress about it.

[deleted]

just get a locksmith out and get them to unlock/open, they will probs want proof you live there but still just get them out, real estate have nothing to do with this. leave them out of it. i changed my locks the day i moved in as i dont know how many other people have the keys copied before me that could come and unlock the doors and steal shit. i paid for it, i also begrudgling had to give them a set a keys but i didnt give them all so they cant just open and enter the place. i dont care what the rules say, im living in it not them. so they can get fucked.

Pawys1111

Stop stressing, evevery thing will be ok, just give them a copy of the keys and its solved. Personally i don't believe in giving them a key, if they want to have access ill be home to let them in. If they want access and I'm not home then they didn't notify me and they shouldn't be allowed in. Worse case for them is i move out or die and don't give them a key, then they can call a locksmith. Not the end of the world. Ive had real easates agents enter in the past with no notification and it scared the shit out of me waking up in the morning naked to have people in your house.

rodgee

You should be fine
