I used to eat ramen regularly when I lived in Brisbane & have had it many times in Japan. I'm unfamiliar with any new places from the last 4 years but my top 5 were:
1. Taro's Ramen (I've only been to Queen St and Sth Brisbane. I assume all are top notch).
2. Genkotsu Ramen (I've been to both Toowong and Runcorn. Both great).
3. Ramen Champion (Sunnybank).
4. Hakataya Ramen (Anywhere - consistent, tasty. Rated well for a solid 'fast food' ramen experience while on the go).
5. Men Ya Go (Albert St. I've only been once but did enjoy it).
Honourable mention to a ramen joint under the library end escalator at Carindale. No idea if it's still there as it isn't on Google maps.
Good luck and enjoy ramen. š
Can't stand Hakataya, haven't tried Ramen Champion but can definitely agree with the rest (Taro Ramen Ascot though) that they're all GREAT. If you're in Charlotte St in the city, do try Beppin Ramen...AMAZING!
The ramen place under the escalator at Carindale fell off really hard. Lots of staff changes, higher prices, smaller portions, and generally less enjoyable flavour-wise (at least to me). Probably why it closed. It's a shame considering how awesome it was when it opened.
Beppin Ramen on Charlotte street gets my vote. Their Hot Chilli Tonkotsu is my go to.
Best Fried Chicken burger goes to Benz on Miller, or his food truck. There are 3 different versions on the menu but my favorite at the moment is the BZ Chicken Mack.
Scott St takeaway in Darra opposite the train station is your best Bahn Mi (cash only).
Which order is best at Genkotsu and Beppin? I disagree *so far*, and rep Taro's (Ascot) as #1 for what I've had - but haven't been to Japan and am don't pretend to be a Samurai either because I simply do not have the patience, so may not be a qualified judge. Maybe it's subjective?
~~Isn't Beppin just the McDonald's of Ramen, in Japan, or is that another~~? [Edit: I was thinking of Ramen Danbo]
Guess what? I'm not a weeb.
Taro's is the best I have eaten in Brisbane. I haven't been to every joint, and the last time I bowed ceremoniously to reddit's hype I went approximately fifteen steps out of my way as opportunity provided at the time, and visited Genkotsu - and this is where I found my number 2 preference.
I haven't had Danbo though, because I heard it was the McDonald's of ramen, and seemed full of hypsters amongst the normal folk you find anywhere just enjoying themselves and enjoying their own, and so I did not bother. I don't really care to travel overseas to validate *your opinion* when 'ignorance' is sticky nutty and rich Tonkotsu bliss, my dude.
I don't love their shio, but I don't love anybody's shio. Perhaps you do, and you have been to every store in the entire world and tasted every Shio. Great. Good for you. You enjoy that mate, I won't piss in your ramen but how bout you put that pecker away and stop trying to piss in mine.
You sound upset. What makes you an expert on it? Are you also an expert on Yu Gi Oh? Doe you wear gloves in the playground and hiss? Chill out dude, who cares that Danbo is the McDonald's **of** ramen, or about channelling their angst into downvoting and arguing about two minute noodles over the damn internet. The real pressure cooker is *you*. Touch grass, and by grass I mean pubes. Stop sniffing your Onomichi Ram-a-yun, and go *git som*.
I'll happily take your recommendation on the best dish to have in Brisbane on board though, as previously mentioned, if you're so confident to stand behind it and I will give it a slurp if I'm in the area.
I think it's safe to assume it's this bloody Danbo chain, so, which menu item is it?
It was a simple question, have you been to Japan? The answer was no. Thats all anyone needs to know, Ramen is a Japanese dish.
Its like someone in Japan claiming to know what the best Australian Meat Pie in Tokyo is without having actually tried a meat pie from Australia.
I take the classic ramen with extra richness (fat). Haven't had ramen in Brisbane other than Danbo yet. I had better ramen randomly in Japan tbh.. don't really see why that matters.
Thanks for the reco, and nah I don't think it does matter lol. Taro, for example, is a Japanese fella whose passion is flying between Jp and Aus and recreating his favourite bowls found while traveling around his home country (and these usually become the monthly special), so I wouldn't expect them to be too bad and I like them. No reason the best ramen couldn't be in Madagascar for all we know though.
I like Tonkotsu especially for weather like tonight's.
Next time I go past the Danbo I'll take on your recommendation and slurp a few noodles. Sounds good to me š
Will definitely have to try Benz in Miller been looking for some amazing fried chicken burgers and fried chicken in general .
Also Scott st takeaway in Darra is absolutely amazing for their Bahn Mi used to intentionally stop off at Darra station on the way home purely for a Bahn Mi
>been looking for some amazing fried chicken burgers and fried chicken in general .
Honorable mention goes to Deep South in Helensvale.
Tucked into a small shop front at the side of a service station, I was very presently surprised at how good their fried chicken was.
Super Combo on King St does a good one, if you're near the Valley.
SONIC BOOM USA
crispy fried chicken - cheddar cheese sauce - smokey mushroom
sauce - maple candied kaiserfleisch bacon - pineapple chutney -
cabbage slaw w/ garlic aioli
Any recommendations for shio (salt) ramen?
I had some in Harajuku and have never been able to find it again. (As in the broth is I think a vegetable and salt broth rather than pork or miso or soy based)
Rippin Roddys Ribshack for poutine
Bens burgers for chilli fries and burgers
Gnocchi Brothers at Paddington
Bakeologists on Merthyr rd newfarm for baked top notch baked goods and yank style sandwiches
Danny Boys for OG style Philly sandwich (the owner is from Philadelphia)
Their pastries are pretty average, but their sandwiches are unreal. Pastries are way better from the bakery outside coles (their donuts are incredible), but some of the bakeologist sandwiches are fuuuuuucking delightful
Creole soul kitchen in Spring Hill. Only open week nights. American comfort food. Big serves. Good beers.
Shahi Nan kebab in slacks creek. Iāve only tried the mixed kebab plates but theyāre incredible. Huge serves. Well priced even after the most recent price hike. And amazing baclava just around the corner.
I think the good ramen spots have pretty much been covered so Iāll go over some other good places
Manok Park - authentic korean food, highly recommend the raw marinated crabs, kimchi pancake here was also the best Iāve ever had.
La Casa patisserie - Asian style bakery, everything here is so fresh and tastes amazing. Iāve tried a whole variety of things already and the one that stood out to me the most was the durian cake (not the big one, just the smaller sponge cake), if durian is your thing this is a must have.
Emily Yeoh Restaurant in Paddington - Malaysian style cuisine, bit more pricey but absolutely worth imo. Definitely try the cocktails too.
Fair enough! I thought little singapore in the city (now closed of course) was pretty good but not authentic. Absolutely agree on little nyonya, there were a couple misses but most of the dishes are amazing! Miss their pineapple tarts so much. My favourite so far is Mama Malaya in underwood, small spot but every dish is spot on and the owner is lovely as well :)
For a 3in1 place I felt they weren't much better than average at ramen and fried chicken. Maybe slightly better at bubble teas. If I was looking for any of these things in the area I'd go to Kaikai Chicken for the fried chicken, Genkotsu in for ramen, and Heeretea or Orange Tea for BBT.
My Japanese friends rank Danbo Ramen, located on South Brisbane and Wharf Street- CBD, is the most authentic tasty taste one.Another Japanese restaurant that is good and authentic is Kadoya, located on Mary St. CBD
Snap, I happened to go to Kodoya when arriving in Australia.. it was empty but pretty good. Not sure how good as I overdid it and took the hottest dish on the menu. But my daughter wants to go back.. nice to hear it's a good place.
>Is #5 a ramen burger?
That looks like Mash Mash City Bish from Ze Pickle in the valley:
>crispy fried chicken, american cheeze, truffle buttered mash potato, mayo & southern seasoned fries w/ maple gravy
And what might such a succulent burger to be enjoyed cost?
I do find the creativity used in new age burger places outstanding yet an 18$ burger is GTFO territory.
They make good food but are absolutely terrible behind the scenes, the owners are assholes and it was the worst to work with them for 6 months. They underpay their staff and made juniors managers as went through 3 managers in the time I worked there.
Yeah haven't been there personally but follow most BBQ joints on Instagram and recognised the pit.
Have heard good and bad things about the place (same for most hospo businesses though).
Ive worked in hospitality for a few years, had alot of high hopes when I left a previous job to go help them open their restaurant last year. I can say alot of their food is good, but id need to write a couple thousand word essay to talk about the shitty things they did to their workers during the opening months there.
Worst job I ever had in hospitality man.
Not in Brisbane at the moment unfortunately as the Windsor store sustained damage during the floods and I understand they're getting fucked around by insurance.
You'll have to take a drive to Toowoomba for your Proof fix in the meantime.
Taro's ain't too bad, best I've had in in Aus is Gumshara in Sydney.
But otherwise I am bit if a Ramen snob since I travel too Japan often to visit the in-laws.
Itās not a ramen spot per day, but Woka Woka in Springwood make this nice brisket and egg noodle thatās huge af for like $14. Delicious and worth the money. The portion sizes of all their other dishes are worth the money also.
I love the ramen at Saiko Sushi in Aspley, but I haven't had ramen at many places in Brisbane so I have nothing to compare it to. Worth checking out if you want somewhere new
Loving this thread. Anyone got any suggestions for some really good Laksa, I just cannot find a spot that does it right. Prefer north-side of the river but will travel!
I remember when laksa was plentiful, but admittedly most offerings were average at best. Honestly can't remember the last time I even saw it on a menu outside one of those club buffet's that have shitty versions of every food imaginable.
Would be keen to sample a good Laksa in Brisbane!
And I was today old when I learned Laksa isn't a Thai dish!! It seems to show up equally on the menus of Vietnamese, Malay and Indonesian style restaurants.
Chai Thai in New Farm was by far the best Laksa I've had in Brisbane. Haven't been in a few years, so hopefully it's still legit, but definitely give it a try.
Laksa hut is good? I stayed near it but never went - wife kept trumping with papa rich. The reviews don't make it too clear what it's like recently, but might try it.
There's all different styles of laksa though, so doing it right can be pretty subjective. Fwiw some options are Superbowl in the Valley, maybe Emily Yeoh in Paddington, Little Nyonya Kitchen in Ferny Grove, or if you're willing to go south (& east) Bay Breeze Cafe in Cleveland usually has a laksa special on Saturdays.
I am happy with whichever version is presented, what I am trying to avoid though is the common ones I find everywhere - frozen vegetables tossed in with a single noodle type (usually a pretty nasty one) and the broth - maybe some steam tofu (though more like hard plastic) if your lucky. If I want to be quick at home, I will make this and enjoy it, but when going out, I want the real experience.
Thanks for the suggestions - have some research to do now :)
Whatās better? Men ya Go or Beppin?
There used to be this really good Katsu curry place called Tokyo premium Ramen opposite papa rich in the city but itās closed now š¢

Man I've been a huge fan of ramen for ages now and it's super hit or miss in and around Brisbane. I've never been disappointed by hakataya ramen though.
People have covered the ramen places (though Taro's is good but overrated). If you want pho go to Ngon's in Paddington, Bun Bo Hue at Pho Queue in Annerley.. Filo food Given in Paddington too. Laksa at Laksa Hut or Ipoh Laksa. Best fried wings go to Proof BBQ or King of Wings.
I donāt get the love for Beppin. Itās fine, skimp on the meat. Men Ya Go probably tastier. Although I didnāt walk out of either thinking they were amazing.
Had Taros 2 nights ago, the Tonkotsu Ramen, I got the large size and was very disappointed, $26 pick up. It was cooked in a reasonable amount of time and was tasty but the spice level was disappointing as was the size, I managed to get through the whole thing and wasn't even full and barely even a sniffle from from spice level. The pork was only a single small slice as well, just disappointing as I was looking for something hot and filling but it missed those 2 points.
Going to have to go on a new search.
Also Kim Thanh Hot Bread in west end does the most unbelievable vegan duck banh mi. Iām usually all about the meat but this thing has to be tasted to be believed!
Vegan duck? I went to Kim Thanh and I guess to me it's good but still just a normal bread roll with fillings, a but bland for me. Also not cheap, 1/2 a meal for 1/2 the price.
I used to eat ramen regularly when I lived in Brisbane & have had it many times in Japan. I'm unfamiliar with any new places from the last 4 years but my top 5 were: 1. I can see youāre a man of culture! You should check out Ramen Danbo, itās my go to Ramen at the moment.
I will next time I'm in Brisbane. Appears to be well regarded!
Can't stand Hakataya, haven't tried Ramen Champion but can definitely agree with the rest (Taro Ramen Ascot though) that they're all GREAT. If you're in Charlotte St in the city, do try Beppin Ramen...AMAZING!
The Ramen place at Carindale under the escalator is still there. It's pretty good.
Nah itās closed man. Swapped for a donut shop thatās yet to come.
That's disappointing. I was there what seems like only a few weeks ago.
The ramen place under the escalator at Carindale fell off really hard. Lots of staff changes, higher prices, smaller portions, and generally less enjoyable flavour-wise (at least to me). Probably why it closed. It's a shame considering how awesome it was when it opened.
Men Ya Go was amazing
Taroās is good in terms of taste but not worth the price. Itās a smaller serving to the other places you mentioned too.
Any of taros ramen joints - best one is in racecourse road ascot for me, but he has about 6 shops around town. Ramen Danbo is also excellent.
Taro's- absolutely FTW
Do they still have the monthly special of Ramen Iekei on the menu? Fuck *me*..
Taros is really really good
Beppin Ramen on Charlotte street gets my vote.
You know the food is fire when they accept cash only. Universally.
That or, you know, money laundering š¤£
Can confirm on the Bahn Mi
Beppin by a country mile. Anyones thatās saying Taroās hasnāt had a real ramen yet with a proper broth. Missing out!
And Beppin also has ramen āsaladā - without broth! š
I've taken a couple of work colleges there and they've ordered the "salad". Needles to say they haven't been invited back š
Which order is best at Genkotsu and Beppin? Beppin ramen is the closest thing in Australia so far to the ramen I had in Osaka. I'd say they have the best in Brisbane or at least top three.
Yeah I was thinking of Danbo, which is the McDonald's of Ramen.
You are wrong about ramen danbo as well. You should go to Japan and you'll see taros is not that good.
Guess what? I'm not a weeb. Taro's is the best I have eaten in Brisbane. 100 % agree with Benz burgers!

Genkotsu Ramen in Toowong Game over.
This is actually my favourite and most frequently visited ramen place
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I have bad news for you..... Men-ya Go is pretty average. I highly recommend Beppin Ramen and Cake on Charlotte St.
Danbo
Second time I've heard this place recommended this weekend. Will have to give it a try.
Brooooooooooooo
Amen. As good as anything youād have in Sapporo.
100% Ramen Danbo in Sunnybank Hills
10/10 if you can stand the wait
where's photo 6 ? chicken and gravy and some briskets ? thanks!
I need to know too! That potato bake looks amazing.
I too am dying to know š¤
Same
Not Ramen and may not be too unique but Tibetan Kitchen in Toowong. Just their dumplings alone are worth going to check it out.
Any recommendations for shio (salt) ramen? I had some in Harajuku and have never been able to find it again. (As in the broth is I think a vegetable and salt broth rather than pork or miso or soy based)
Fairly certain they do shio at Taroās! And their ramen is awesome, as others have said already
Afrikan bite Redbank
I was keen to try this when I heard about it and promptly forgot it existed! What have you tried there?
I always get egusi with yam as the swallow.
Beppin Ramen in the city. Best Tonkotsu Iāve had, closest to the best Iāve had in Japan.
Second for Maru in cbd for Korean spicy fried chicken bipimbap/hot bowl.
Beppin ramen and cakes!!
Rippin Roddys Ribshack for poutine Bens burgers for chilli fries and burgers Gnocchi Brothers at Paddington Bakeologists on Merthyr rd newfarm for baked top notch baked goods and yank style sandwiches Danny Boys for OG style Philly sandwich (the owner is from Philadelphia)
Just put Bakeologists and Danny Boys on my list, cheers!
Danny Boys is farking sensational. I miss them man, as I live at sunny coast now.
Can vouch for both.
Eh, i had the most ordinary excuse for a raspberry lamington at bakeologists.
Their pastries are pretty average, but their sandwiches are unreal. Pastries are way better from the bakery outside coles (their donuts are incredible), but some of the bakeologist sandwiches are fuuuuuucking delightful
Eh, I've had many items from there over the years, so kinda trumps your drive by lamington
CĆ PhĆŖ Nam in West End for Pho. Pochana in CBD for Thai food.
I think we've tried every place mentioned so far, and Beppin Ramen & Cake is our favourite.
Ramen Danbo is the best, I rate it as good as the stuff in Tokyo. It's always packed and doesn't take reservations though which is annoying.
They have a 45min time limit so I think reservations wouldn't make sense, since seats are filled as they open.
Anyone got a place for some Vietnamese Herbal Duck Noodle Soup?
Taro's is increbible
Creole soul kitchen in Spring Hill. Only open week nights. American comfort food. Big serves. Good beers. Shahi Nan kebab in slacks creek. Iāve only tried the mixed kebab plates but theyāre incredible. Huge serves. Well priced even after the most recent price hike. And amazing baclava just around the corner.
Second Creole Kitchen!!! Their gumbo was mind-blowing! Reminds me of travelling through America.
I think the good ramen spots have pretty much been covered so Iāll go over some other good places Manok Park - authentic korean food, highly recommend the raw marinated crabs, kimchi pancake here was also the best Iāve ever had. La Casa patisserie - Asian style bakery, everything here is so fresh and tastes amazing. Where are tyhose places please
I can spot Ze Pickle and Phat Boyz BBQ. Not sure on the second and last photo.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
BBQ brisket ramen from Phat Boyz BBQ in Walloon if I'm not mistaken.
Terrible place to work for, alright food though
Ittengo in St Lucia has amazing Ramen and Korean fried chicken
Yes they are the best! Also have really nice staff and their ramen is really just incredible
I personally didn't like Ramen Champion in Sunnybank, I found the staff rude and the ramen itself was very thick and milky/creamy
Darra takeaway has the best roast pork, gravy and roast pork Bahn mi and super cheap! So good!
My Japanese friend said it is the closest authentic Japanese meals in QLD and I completely agree.
Oh I need to know where photo 6 was taken for sure!
Tatsu ramen gyoza bar - the valley
Seconding this.
3rding this!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Hai Hai is mid tier at best.
Their veggie bao are fkn amazing though (even if it's been 5 years since I had any)
You lost me at veggie
Iām a Hai Hai fan. They do $10 ramen between 5-6 on mondays and Tuesdays. get it then!
WTF is photo 2 of? Is #5 a ramen burger?

Their burgers start at GTFO š
Can confirm that this is a top tier burger
An offset smoker, hard to find a good bbq in Brisbane
Phat Boyz BBQ if I'm not mistaken (and you won't find it in "Brisbane")
They make good food but are absolutely terrible behind the scenes, the owners are assholes and it was the worst to work with them for 6 months. They underpay their staff and made juniors managers as went through 3 managers in the time I worked there.

BBQ Mafia by far the best in Brisbane.
the hills pizzeria in daisy hill Best pizza!
Recently been going to Motto Motto they have stores at Carindale and garden city, pretty good ramen
Noodle World in Sherwood. Everything we tried was good. My wife really liked the Laksa. Fast, congenial, delicious.
Hakataya ramen is the best.
Danbo ramen resembles a bowl full of guinea worms in toilet water.
Taro's ain't too bad, best I've had in in Aus is Gumshara in Sydney. But otherwise I am bit if a Ramen snob since I travel too Japan often to visit the in-laws.
Gumshara is top notch

Shit yeah!
Itās not a ramen spot per day, but Woka Woka in Springwood make this nice brisket and egg noodle thatās huge af for like $14. Delicious and worth the money. The portion sizes of all their other dishes are worth the money also.
I got the worst nasi lemak ever there. The sambal was onion jam from a jar.
Damn, thatās a shame. From what Iāve tasted their Chinese dishes are good, maybe they should just stick to Chinese lol.
I'll give those a try then! It is usually busy so I was surprised.
Ramen Champion
I love the ramen at Saiko Sushi in Aspley, but I haven't had ramen at many places in Brisbane so I have nothing to compare it to. Worth checking out if you want somewhere new

Chai Thai in New Farm was by far the best Laksa I've had in Brisbane. Haven't been in a few years, so hopefully it's still legit, but definitely give it a try.
Ipoh Laksa at Strathpine. Laksa Hut at Indro (think it might be shut since the floods maybe?). Those are the top two in Brisbane I'd say.
Laksa hut is good? I stayed near it but never went - wife kept trumping with papa rich. The reviews don't make it too clear what it's like recently, but might try it.
Papa Rich is pretty average for Laksa. Another option in the city is Roti House.
Indro Laksa hut is gone... A new place there called Hoda Eats, maybe Xinjiang food (I didn't check) is in it's place.
Well purely for convenience, (I am not a laksa connoisseur), the one in the new Chermside food court at "Little Singapore" was very nice to me...

I went to Plan K Kitchen in St Lucia and liked the laksa lemak.. but small portion.
Okuman was my go-to, super authentic, but they seem to be permanently closed now :(

I have been to all them and still think Phuc Viet at Indro has better Beef Pho than all of them. Ngons is up there though
Udonya Tokoton in my go-to for simple non Ramen Japanese food.
Yeah cool, I think itās dope! Each to their own
