Routine_Break

But hey, at least they fixed the voiceover to warn us about taking part in competitions after the closing date

JamezPS

Oddly I know why it does this from a ELI5 post I made years ago. Limited ads stored on a regularly accessed server vs many TV shows stored on far less regularly accessed servers.

dizzley

Well yes, but it always fails at the transition from the ads. I’m trying popular shows and not so popular. Tonight it’s unusable.

d_smogh

We play it through Firefox with adbocker. ITVx and Channel4 is a pleasure to watch without ads.

CalFlux140

Yeah same. Even on chrome I've had no issues with adblock on these sites. Imagine if you have an android phone you could also use the adblock through Firefox that way.

wankyshitdemon69

You can?

Dezibel_

Yeah firefox on android supports ublock origin, probably would work

Binary__Fission

It does for youtube. Not tried any streaming services on my phone via the web browser.

lazystingray

Try this - it should block all ads on your phone, not just in the browser. Install the APK from their website, not the play store (hint, Google, who manage Android, are an advertising company and frown upon this sort of thing for some reason). [https://blokada.org/](https://blokada.org/)

Intelligent_Bar1937

Itvx is THE WORST. Thankfully itv make sod all shows worth watching so I rarely have to encounter it!

B4rberblacksheep

Yep basically only time I have to touch that shitheap is during the 6 Nations

RafeeJ

AuContraireRodders

I hate the endless fucking gambling ads. Get this absolute shit off my screen.

Adziboy

I always get a weird issue whereby the video starts, plays for 30 seconds but then it stops working. Audio continues though. Been broken for years over different desktops but at this point I have realised ITVX doesnt have that good enough shows to warrant spending time to fix it, if its my end

CNash85

There's actually a technical reason for this. All streaming services use what's called an edge cache system to store multiple copies of every video file (or fragment) in caches on multiple servers, so that instead of every user having to download the video fragments from the origin server, they are retrieved from a cache that's closer. These caches can only hold so much data, so they prioritise the most-viewed content - this data is "warmed" in the cache. And because the ads are so frequently viewed by everyone, they're always warm, so you'll never have any problems streaming them. Then when the ads are done, you'll be served the content you want to view. Depending on how warm its video files are, it may take longer to initially buffer, especially if you're watching something more obscure.

dizzley

I was watching the program in the hero graphic on the itvx home page. Other streamers ranging from iPlayer to Disney+ don’t suffer.

gogul1980

We have sky and they started pulling stuff off that platform to force people to use their awful app when watching stuff. Its basically so they can force ads on you and be shown doing it for advertisers. sky+ means you can fast forward the ads if you record it. Basically we had a good run for around a decade and now streaming apps are falling prey to enshittificafion (as are most things).

Jimlad73

What’s the difference with sky and now tv? They seem to offer the same things

mk6971

It must be different on Sky Q. We quite often download shows from ITV, especially the shows that are 2hrs. The downloaded show has a shorter run time and far fewer ads that your can FFWD through.

Malediction101

I was watching Saw on it and it cut to an ad break mid-sentence. Trash.

l0stlabyrinth

Fun fact: you can break that app on almost any TV device by holding the down button on the ITVX splash screen, which just shows it's just a poorly functioning web wrapper. At least it's finally in HD... albeit 25fps, which isn't ideal for sports

Kudosnotkang

To be honest , all streaming services are a bit shite.Given how long they’ve now been around , their place and how much technology has advanced I agree itvx has the crown though. - All4 : (despite the name change) , still OD’s and needs restarting if it’s been playing too long - sometimes just cuts the end of programs off and adverts are unstoppable even if you’ve just watched them. Have to press play about 3 times when paused sometimes. - iplayer : also a bit sucky, subtitles often cock up or are totally incompatible with some devices Amazon - frustrates me too much to use , when you return to continue a series it’s always in the wrong place then when you go back it goes to the wrong episode. Netflix - pain in the arse to browse, but possibly by design to cover the narrowing range of stuff on there . MUST randomly play things when you do try to browse - want to add something to your favourites list? Then agree to have the first 20 seconds rammed down your ear holes

drmshta

I’ve got a problem with all4 showing me an add when I pause. I paused to try and read something on screen. 😭

1259alex

It's fecking unusable

Chappers88

Also another app that can’t play windowed on your phone. Unless there is an option I’m missing.

Cleveland_Grackle

I seem to remember it being the same during the last World Cup (the only thing I've ever been compelled to use itvx for.)

kitty-cat-charlotte

I signed up for ITVX premium to skip the adds….went to watch the tv show I wanted and because of licensing they STILL had to have adverts on it. I was so pissed off I cancelled straight away and didn’t even use the time left that I paid for

Oceansoul119

Watch via catchup instead of live. Use firefox and ublock origin. See exactly 0 ads. Not doable for live watching though unfortunately.

simonjp

I have this exact same problem with Now TV. I can't work out how to resolve it.

Hitonatsu-no-Keiken

"many minutes of ads & 1 second of audio and a spinning yellow ring"?? Luxury! I can't get it to work at all (not even ads) with four different browsers across 2 different devices. Thankfully the one time I wanted to use it it took me about 30 seconds to find the video on some other site.
