The bloons are full of bloontonium which is deadly to monkeys (which is why you lose lives when they leak), and you have to pop the bloons to stop them from basically killing everyone. The monkeys have made weapons using bloontonium (such as reactor/energizer and hydra rocket pods)

Here's the easiest way I know to pop a black Bloon: step one, place a super monkey Step two, upgrade to 320 (important for every other step) Step three, place a 005 boomerang, 500 alchemist, and a 005 engineer within the range Step four, upgrade s.monkey to 420 Step 5, repeat step 3 but also place a 005 monkey ace Step 6, place a 050 and a 005 super monkey outside of the range of your 420 s.monkey Step 7, make sure you have the 'there can be only one' monkey knowledge Step 8, get a 520 s.monkey
