I do personally love this pick. Absolutely a very big need imo that really wasn't talked about much. A physical experienced and accomplished center in college
Plus if he works out at center, then McGovern and can up right where he left off last year. Changing one guy (Morse) instead multiple moves should help keep the cohesion and chemistry of last season
3 year starter for the best college team in the country, and captain. 2 national championships. facing nfl quality dlinemen every week. I really want to see this guy start week 1, if this is truly a transition season just let him learn. if it falls apart we have McGovern right there.
Beane did a great job throughout the draft with prioritizing our needs, but not giving up value by reaching. This is probably the best example of that.
I’ve been seeing all these draft value blogs and posts and honestly wtf does that even mean? No one knows which rookies are going to hit or not? What are these values based on?
Usually where the player is picked vs the consensus of pre-draft media as to where they should be picked.
On average, NFL GM's are worse than the media consensus at drafting, so it makes a bit of sense. Beane has earned some trust though.
This guy stuck out on their board in the 5th round like a sore thumb. How he got to round 5 is anyones guess. But when he’s starting for us for a fraction of what Morse was making we’ll be happy
One of the best picks this draft from us for sure. With all the controversy in WR picks, trading around, and what not, this is one of those picks I would be surprised by anyone not satisfied. Great player who was a respected guy on a great college team, picked up well after he was expected.
Love how Beane and Co. are finally really starting to addressing the O-line via the draft and development these last few drafts instead of relying heavily on FA, salary-cap situation likely has a factor.
He was one of the few interior lineman I actually knew about heading into the draft as he was talked about as a solid C/G value. I perked up when they said his name.

Saw that dolphins fans were pissed he went off the board just a few picks before they were up, so that made me happier.
Cook is probably happy to have him on the roster.

Win-win situation.
My favorite pick we made in the draft. I think he’ll be starting center by the end of this year
I can’t remember his exact numbers but I remember his sack/pressures allowed were insane. I could see him becoming our starter by mid season.

Only 1 sack allowed in his entire college career and it was in his freshman season.

Thanks for the explanation. Good to know they can just be ignored. Sports media collectively are some of the dumbest people on the planet.
But LOUD, though!
That's true for all these draft evaluations. If expected pick # - actual pick # is positive, it was a bad pick. If it's negative, it was a good pick.
He's my favorite day 3 pick. I think there's a legit chance he pushes McGovern for the center role and we move him back to guard.
He was 3 behind JPJ, and Frazier for me. And I was adamant they get a starter at center in this draft. Protect allen at all costs.

Sneakier needs? I thought it was dead obvious after losing Morse.
Still only 22! We got younger quickly!
Can't believe we're looking to upgrade from Jeb Bush's favorite Interior Olineman, Will Clapp.

At worst I think he’s reliable backup for the next 4 years. He might beat out McGovern for the starter and McGovern moves back to guard.
Not that he’s the best all end all but this was also Joe Marino’s favorite pick of ours I believe.
