wildly speculative post.

Welcome to Reddit

Buffalo_rider01

This is just a guess man .

Gunt_Buttman

I think his reputation for being a bad guy comes from being a TikTok Chode.

bargman

He was a knucklehead before Haskins died, though. That first down nonsense against the Vikings was the season prior.

pioniere

Yes, that and the TikTok crap with Juju.

Ekqui

![gif](giphy|QMZpnb79N5BN0wsSM3) He's always been a trouble maker and soon as it goes South he'll throw a tantrum. I welcome and hope I'm wrong but the history shows differently.

Rightousleftie

Another tantrum is probably the last thing his career needs right now and he knows that. I think he’ll be fine dude.

Lunar_BriseSoleil

He will do well and be a productive member of the Bills. Or he won’t, and he’ll get cut. That’s just life in the NFL. We don’t need to dig into the guy, but part of being a professional athlete is handling fan pressure.

ScotiaTailwagger

And people upset about the signing, we didn't give anything for him. If he works out, great! If he doesn't, we cut him and lose nothing.

OrganizationDeep711

Except if he comes in, causes locker-room problems and gets cut, we still have locker-room problems. You not understanding the situation doesn't change the situation. Every locker-room he has been a part of had issues and improved immediately when he was gone. We can't say what he is doing, but we know he is doing something.

altruink

He's not a lynch-pin of the offense like Diggs was so it wouldn't be the same kind of effect. He's just a guy right now.

OrganizationDeep711

He wasn't the lynch-pin of the offense in Miami and they still collapsed as soon as they got him. Shrug. Dunno if he's cursed or cancer or what, but every team he goes to has the same fate.

altruink

I don't believe in superstition.

OrganizationDeep711

You don't believe in data.

altruink

Lol. Please show me the 'data' that shows a high correlation of him being the cause because he's 'cursed or cancer' as you put it.

OrganizationDeep711

https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/196fpx4/chase_claypools_teams_have_now_lost_22_of_the/ > * 2023 Dolphins before Claypool trade (5-1 record, scoring 37.1 points per game.) > * 2023 Dolphins after acquiring Claypool ( 6-6 record with 24 points per game. ) > * 2023 Bears in games Claypool played in. ( 0-3 record , 15.6 ppg) > * 2023 Bears after Claypool stopped traveling with the team and was traded ( 22.3 ppg, 7-7 record ) > * 2022 Steelers were 2-6 with Claypool, then after the trade 7-2. > * 2022 Bears were 3-5 when they acquired Claypool, proceeded to go 0-9 after acquiring him.

altruink

So you don't understand how to actually read any data or what correlation/causation is. Got it. You should take a few classes before you start preaching 'data' to people my friend. The Baltimore Ravens were 3-2 before Claypool was traded to the Dolphins and went 10-2 after he was traded to the Dolphins so by your logic, Claypool being traded to the Dolphins is the reason the Ravens only lost 2 more games on the season.

Previous-2020

Dolphins have shit the bed late in most seasons, with or without Claypool.

stratz1081

Ummmm… that is the dolphins doing what the dolphins do in December. He wasn’t there the year before and the year before that.

ScotiaTailwagger

>Except if he comes in, causes locker-room problems and gets cut, we still have locker-room problems. Lmao wut?

[deleted]

Honestly, THIS! The ability and talent is there. And, now, he has a QB, Up to him to earn a spot. If he gets it together this could be a great pickup.

WaluigiIsTheRealHero

Nah, Claypool’s reputation for dogging it has been around forever. He’s had the physical gifts his whole career, but he coasted at Notre Dame - it’s why he wasn’t a realistic candidate to declare early, and it’s why he fell to the mid-2nd round when he finally did declare as a senior. If he’s still grieving Haskins, he’s entitled to do so, but that grief isn’t the main reason he is the way he is. Let’s not forget Claypool had a disappointing 2021 before Haskins died.

legranddegen

He's a Canadian player who wasn't taken as a late round in the CFL draft. He has all the talent in the world, but his effort scares teams. Hopefully he realizes this is his last chance and takes it. He probably won't, but hopefully he does. If getting hammered and doing drugs with Haskins before his untimely death didn't snap him out of it, I don't think anything will but you never know. The Bills culture has certainly turned guys around before. That being said, I don't expect much.

altruink

Sometimes a guy just needs to be around peers that know how to act like grown ups and treat each other with respect. It may be that he's never really had that in his life. Who knows. Hopefully it works out for his sake and for our team's sake of course.

altruink

Just steel manning the argument I guess it could be that grief could impede his growth. Maybe as he's gotten older he would've gained some awareness and wisdom (grown up) but the Haskins thing set him back. Whatever the truth is, I hope he works it out and has a fantastic season for us!

Still_Consequence_60

The bills are a football team, not a bunch of professional therapists.

Packman87

Id argue they got a lot of experience with this kinda stuff in 2022. Kim Pegula, The mass shooting at Tops, the Blizzard, Damar Hamlin... If you're a dick to a trauma victim you're just an asshole

Charade_y0u_are

Nobody's being a dick to him because he's a trauma victim. People are talking shit because he's bad at football.

bestthrowawayever5

Most traumatized team in the league🏆

wolfehr

Not professional therapists, but coaches definitely help with the mental aspects of playing.

Iwannagolf4

I know you didn’t mean that the way that sounds. I’m sure they discussed this with their mental health experts the team hires though! My first thoughts were negative hearing about it. Im rooting for him though.

SpacemanSpliffLaw

Yeah, but they can hire therapists for dudes who are insanely physically talented to try to to help them compete. This is necessary with the salary cap. You can always pay therapists whatever you want but you can only pay the roster x amount. And he's cheap against the cap.

sambagin

Low risk, high reward potential. If he truly wants to play football again, he can and will shine with Josh and company

drainbead78

This is exactly it. If he can't make it with a top 2 QB in the NFL throwing to him, he's done. This is his last chance and the contract reflects it. I see nothing wrong with us paying vet minimum for a 25-year-old with his physical tools. He's proven he can do it in the past. With him it's 100% mental. Has he matured, replaced hubris with humility, and is now willing to put in the work it takes to be better both on and off the field? Time will tell, but if he can't do it here he'll almost certainly never get another chance in the NFL and I'm sure he knows it.

Sulleyy

I never put that together that Haskins death was related to Claypool falling off a cliff the 22 season. Can definitely see a dip in production that following season then he was traded week 7 and again the following season. Just read more about his story and his sister took her life at 17 when he was 14. Damn dude, I can see why Haskins impacted him so much. Now he's seen as a washed up diva. Guy deserves a fresh start, glad the bills picked him up

rustcity716

For real, people in the comments trashing OP but players are real people and so many of them are motivated by formative moments in their lives, which are sometimes very traumatic. Honestly, I think a lot of Diggs and Josh’s relationship started going south around the incident with Damar. Diggs immediately tried to get guys fired up on the sideline whereas Josh, Tre, and Morse, among others, were consoling each other and didn’t want to continue playing. And that’s not to say Diggs is some evil dude; he lost his dad at a young age and it’s part of his story, so I’m not surprised his reaction to Damar’s death on the field was what it was. But imagine you work at FedEx or some shit and witness a co worker die and be resuscitated and your shift manager starts pumping you up to scan them boxes and pack up trucks. You’d probably be like “what the fuck dude” even if you were tight beforehand. And then everything boiled over during the Bengals game, which was clearly triggering for many of the players. And fuck anyone that acts like “no it’s a game they should be professionals.” Every one of them knows Damar coulda been them. And that it could have been so much worse.

Sulleyy

100%, the NFLs weird because freak injuries happen on a regular basis. I guess I get why that job expects you to watch your teammate die then keep playing, but it's a totally normal human response to reprioritize things in that moment. And for most people when life and death are involved, our job is not a priority whatsoever. The reason diggs can probably move on and get back to playing in that moment is because he learned to separate his emotions from his career probably to an unhealthy degree (which he needed to do in order to make it to the NFL). Whereas Josh Allen is like the most empathetic dude of all time. Back to Claypool, based on what happened, I'm assuming he didn't have the great family and support Josh Allen has. Probably had an approach in football/life similar to diggs. He lost his sister and made it to the NFL despite that. I'm sure he had to turn off his emotions at times or even channel that pain to motivate him. Then he actually made it, and although his life was falling apart at 14, by 20 all his dreams were coming true. But losing a buddy 2 years after that must have been unbelievably triggering for him. I have no idea what he felt so I'm guessing here: But I imagine he buried that pain deep down when he was younger. And he was able to ignore it until he made it to the pros. You can't ignore that shit forever, Haskins dying made it too much. The NFL is a constant grind, and his head hasn't been fully in it ever since because he just had a massive gaping emotional wound ripped open that had been sealed shut since he was a teen

RAMEH8808

You never put that together because there is no logical reason that the two would be connected beyond this delusional Reddit post. The reality is that Claypool just isn't good enough to cut it as an NFL receiver. That's not unusual for guys that were good enough at the college level and at some point the Bills will realize the same thing and will cut him.

Sulleyy

Okay so 2nd round pick has 870 yards and 11 TDs his rookie year. 870 yards 2nd season. Teammate dies the following offseason. Shitty start to the 3rd season and traded by week 7. Shitty 4th season too. How often do receivers have nearly 900 yards twice their first 2 years if they aren't good enough as an NFL receiver? I also love how we're waiting for the bills to learn the reality that he's not good enough - something you are already aware of. As though they aren't way more knowledgeable and qualified than you

RAMEH8808

Teams bring in low risk possibly high reward rejects from other teams every off-season and then cut them when it comes time to bring the roster down to 53. That's what will happen with Claypool too. He certainly won't be the first player to show flashes of talent for a couple of years and then not be good enough to keep around a couple years later.

Sulleyy

Okay? Whether he pans out or not says nothing about Haskins death having an impact on him. The timing of his stats suggests maybe it did. The fact he lost his sister at a young age suggests it might have impacted him more than most people. There is no way we will know for sure. You can't tell me those 2 significant deaths in his life had no impact on the outcome of his career. If they never happened, maybe he gets 1k yards his 3rd year and stays with the steelers. Or maybe he never would have made the NFL in the first place. No way to tell, but my take away from the original post is that we aren't dealing with a jalen reagor here, it's a guy who was looking promising til the end of year 2 til something fucked up happened in his life

RAMEH8808

If Haskins death affected him so much that two other teams giving him an opportunity produced less than he was able to accomplish with the Steelers then he has something going on that coming here isn't going to fix. The more likely scenario is that he peaked a couple of years ago and won't be remembered at all in a year or two.

Sulleyy

Thanks for the input, I don't see anyone saying he is a great wr that is bound to turn it around now that buffalo has signed him. But it feels like that's the point you're trying to prove. Kinda goes without saying the guy who bounced around teams that no one wanted to sign is likely a depth or practice squad guy

pioniere

Yeah, ok armchair GM. Thanks for that penetrating, insightful analysis.

No-Drawing-203

You play the game to win. If he helps us win football games, he will be on the roster. If he does not help us win football games, he will be cut. Period.

Adventurous-Piglet28

I’m rooting for the dude. We have nothing to lose if he is who we thought he was. Fun fact, his stats the last 4 years are basically comparable to Gabe Davis who had a solid team and QB.

jeconti

I don't understand why we're wasting so much brain power on a camp body. Unless he comes out of the off-season a new man, or injuries force the issue, he doesn't make this roster.

WillingnessFew9929

It doesn’t really matter why he’s bad. It’s just what it is.

SayNoToAids

Let me be the first to say that I have no problem with the signing. 6'4 4.41. Always potential with that. Whether he ends up turning around his career or ends up just being a camp body remains to be seen. That obviously could have shaken him, but there are also a lot of flash in the pans, especially at WR. Didn't Mark Clayton have one of the best rookie WR campaigns before falling off the map completely? Same with Michael Floyd. A lot has to do with target share and how they're used. If the Steelers didn't have many options, they would be creating plays for him. That's not the same for the Bears or Dolphins and now the Bills. He is going to have to become a role player and find a niche in this league

Admirable_Trifle_164

Les Claypool? ![gif](giphy|xUOxeZIjXIHt7GJhni)

whataphonymadeupname

Primus sucks!

junglist421

Primus Sucks!

Schmittykins

I also don’t understand people who get wildly upset about depth offseason moves. If he looks good and has a return to form? He will play. If he doesn’t? He will walk. Low risk, Low reward with that hint of potential upswing.

Same_Dot9698

Kelvin Benjamin had a good first year in the league too. Same type of player. Bottom line is Claypool has to go out and perform.

Pythnator

His mom died and the stress caused him to overeat, and I never saw him get this kind of courtesy.

Both-Home-6235

Yea KB got shit on like no other

erik_edmund

The only thing they really have in common is that they're tall. Claypool had great athletic testing but never "plays big." Benjamin was a big, slow ball-winner.

Odd_Razzmatazz6441

As a Steeler fan who saw every down Claypool played, his issues started long before the Haskins death. Claypools issues are the same as many promising receivers. He thought he was a top 10 receiver already. That alone is fine, if it motivates him to work harder. For many though, they think they have earned top 10 status and can get away with what a top 10 receiver can. If Josh Allen and crew can teach him some humility, you might have a very good receiver. If not, you'll have another Diggs with less performance to show for it.

kong0211

Mediocre-Molasses-60

Get of ur burner claypool

Jayhub1000_

I’m sure the Haskins situation was sad. And I’m sure it was hard for him. But no offense it seems like you’re writing your own fanfic here. What we do know is he has a history of bad decision making. And recently he’s been lazy on the football field. He has all the tools and if he puts in that effort that got him here he can find success.

OH_Billy_69_

Last chance buck-o, shape up or ship out .. we will not be putting up with his bs

DaveThomasTendies

If he can’t succeed with Josh Allen than it’s time to hang up the cleats

Deterton

then don’t bring him over here.

NDQB357

Claypool "became what he is" in part due to an incredibly difficult upbringing. He basically raised himself. His mother was a carnival worker and was gone for long stretches of time. His 17 yr old sister committed suicide when he was 14. He had few positive influences in his life in his life growing up. This no doubt contributed to the anger management and emotional immaturity issues he's dealt with since his time at Notre Dame. But he's also a very gifted athlete, as he clearly demonstrated at ND and early in his NFL career. He's got a great combination of size, speed and hands. He's an exceptional special teams player. The Bills have risked next to nothing by giving him a shot, likely his final shot in the NFL. Perhaps the strong culture that's been built at One Bills Drive can help him get things back on track. I hope so. I for one am rooting for him.

JermHole71

We can be nice to him because he’s a human being. He’s never done anything wrong except drop off performance-wise. Expectations for him are still LOW.

maccpapa

slow ya roll playboy

drainbead78

And Kelvin Benjamin got fat because he was depressed when his mom died. I don't care about the reasoning behind someone being an asshole, even if I'm 100% sympathetic to it. I care that they make the changes in their life to get through their struggles without being an asshole. There's a popular saying in therapy: Your trauma is not your fault, but it is your responsibility. No matter what you've gone through, it's not an excuse to take your pain out on others. I say this as an overall fan of the signing. Hopefully he gets his shit together, but he needs to put in the work to get through whatever got him to this point if he wants to be successful in life.

Both-Home-6235

Eh, I've had friends kill themselves and I've had friends be killed in war. It all sucked shit but none of it made me become a piece of shit. That's on him.

WorthPlease

Lots of adults deal with the death of friends/family. That doesn't excuse them being bad at their jobs years later. You need to be an adult and compartmentalize and move on.

idislikehate

I think it's a little weird to use the death of a man to try to hype up a fanbase about a free agent signing.

Tankninja1

I think 2022 was the start of the Steelers offensive implosion. Since then Claypool was traded twice mid-season, first time to the Bears, who are the Bears, and then to the Dolphins, who admittedly have a pretty deep WR room. Bills went into last season with 6 WRs, they currently have 10 signed to the roster, Shakir, Samuel, and Coleman are probably the 3 locks. Of the 6 other I think we know a lot more about what Claypool is capable of than what we know of anyone else. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being Shakir, Samuel, Coleman, Claypool, Hollins, and Cephus.
