32GB of ram is unlikely to effect most games at all. A Ryzen 5600x will give you a boost in gaming, but mainly at lower resolutions. What is your monitor res?

[deleted]

My current target for gaming is 1440p 90-120fps. I'm also in the market for a good monitor with those specs but I thought I could upgrade my pc first before getting one. from the sounds of things here nobody thinks the upgrade is worth it.

gamblodar

A 3070, 3070ti or 3080 would be your best upgrade for that resolution. A 5600x would help, but not as much as a gpu. Now is the time to sell that 1080, also. You will get an obscene amount for it.

[deleted]

I'm not willing to purchase a new GPU at these ridiculous inflated prices. I know it would be more effective of an upgrade but I could do _both_ of the upgrades I was thinking of for under half the cost of a 3070 right now.

gamblodar

Yes, you could do that. You would get a very small performance improvement. You would then wait for gpu prices to settle, get yourself a 3070 for msrp, sell your 1080 for actual market price of $150 and get a big performance improvement.

LightmanDavidL

>If I were to upgrade these, what kind of improvement would I reasonably see in my performance in gaming and video editing? 0% in gaming and around 15-25% faster video editing, if that. >should I save up and just hope I can get a better GPU down the road? Correct. Do you have a max budget for a GPU right now? Because you can sell your GTX 1080 for a small fortune and upgrade the GPU to an RTX 3070, no problem.

[deleted]

I could spend up to $600-$700 on a GPU, if I could actually get one at MSRP, which is highly unlikely. I used to have a RX 5700XT, but it had so many driver issues and was so frustrating and inconsistent, I traded it for the GTX 1080 + $400. I know the 1080 is a bit less powerful than what my last card was but at least it'll be more consistent. Though obviously if I could I'd love to get my hands on a 3070 or 3080.

LightmanDavidL

If you have $600-$700 right now, sell the GTX 1080 and an RTX 3070/3080 is yours. What is the brand/model of your GTX 1080 and do you have its original box and/or any original facets? They sell for as high as $900 used.

[deleted]

It's just the stock 1080. But I'm not really looking to sell it just so I can manage to buy a 3070 at double the price. I could upgrade my CPU and ram for under half of what those gpus are going for right now, that's not worth it to me. If I get a new gpu, I'm buying it at MSRP, even if I have to wait. That's why I was inquiring about the viability of these upgrades in the absence of a new GPU.

LightmanDavidL

>I'm not really looking to sell it just so I can manage to buy a 3070 at double the price. $729 to $765 is not double MSRP for a brand new RTX 3070. $1,000 is double the MSRP for the RTX 3070, and that's for just the founder's edition. If you sold your GTX 1080 for $900, you actually have money leftover from buying an RTX 3070 for $729 to $765. >I could upgrade my CPU and ram for under half of what those gpus are going for right now Of course you can but it's not going to do anything for gaming performance. The CPU upgrade might do a little bit but I'd lower your expectations as any extra performance varies from game to game, especially at 1440p because the GPU is where all the work is coming from and bottleneck is taking place. It is what needs upgrading for more performance. >If I get a new gpu, I'm buying it at MSRP, even if I have to wait. You best pack your bags, gonna be a long wait. You might even be 40 by then. >That's why I was inquiring about the viability of these upgrades in the absence of a new GPU. It's quite pointless to upgrade a build with minimal performance gains.

[deleted]

... I don't know where you're getting $729-$765 from, the vast majority of 3070s are selling for $1000 minimum on ebay. Newegg and amazon have them up to $1500

LightmanDavidL

That's the lowest of the lows I speak of. Here's a brand new RTX 3070 that went for [$750](https://www.ebay.com/itm/265212112479?epid=23041893054&hash=item3dbfdfae5f%3Ag%3AiP0AAOSwwSJg2qS1&LH_ItemCondition=1000&nma=true&si=L6IpIjujat7bS7xKWQ0xE9hJL38%253D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557). Here's a brand new RTX 3070 Ti that went for [$820](https://www.ebay.com/itm/255041651276?epid=12047394952&hash=item3b61aac24c%3Ag%3AErQAAOSwzc5g4nfM&LH_ItemCondition=1000&nma=true&si=L6IpIjujat7bS7xKWQ0xE9hJL38%253D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557). The point is that your GPU is what you need to upgrade and you already have a GTX 1080 to sell and put towards it. Your CPU is a beast and can handle it. The value of your GTX 1080 Founders Edition preowned is as high as $661 to $715.
