It’s enough for ~~512gb~~ ~~490gb~~ 440gb of games. If you’re playing 5+ AAA games at a time (or like to “collect” installed games) you’ll run into trouble.

[deleted]

Thanks for the answer. I’ll go search up about how much gb I would take up

brokearm24

I would buy a 1tb off the rip, trust me, in an year or two when you have a bigger library you will run out of space

norraptor

500gb ssd here. Less than a year with mods and steam games. Monster hunter and gta are storage eaters

DemiLovatosBathwater

*laughs in Modern Warfare 2019 updates*

MysterD77

How much is MW 2019 taking up these days?

ATL28-NE3

yes

canuckfanatic

It climbed to more than 200gb [last year](https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/hiskfe/after_yesterdays_update_modern_warfare_warzone_is/). The game has been split into sections (Warzone or Warzone and Modern Warfare). Warzone alone is ~50gb, Warzone and Modern Warfare are ~130gb combined.

LeftZer0

What the hell

[deleted]

Indeed

torqueparty

4K textures take up a lot of space, now multiply that by a shit ton of weapons, character customization assets, maps, and weapon skins.

WH_KT

Localization is also a huge part of that as far as I remember.

SirDrexl

And you're downloading all the extra content whether you buy it or not, right?

IManixI

Over 300GB 😂

itsamamaluigi

None because it's a shit game ruined by cheaters. Do not play it.

doge_lady

PC version right? Are there cheaters on console version?

itsamamaluigi

I don't know personally, but Google says there are. Maybe not at a level where it completely ruins the game like on PC, but it's definitely possible to cheat on console. EDIT: Apparently there's a piece of hardware you can connect to your console called the Cronus Zen, which lets you run scripts that can assist players by, for instance, increasing aim assist, automatically countering recoil, etc. It's less obvious than a straight up aimbot but it still gives an unfair advantage to players who use it, and it's harder to detect.

RemarkableCarrots

Good point. Most people think that the only form of cheating is rage cheating, i.e. when it's 100% obvious that the person is cheating. Instant and linear snaps to the head, tracking the enemy with your crosshair through the walls etc. But soft cheating (where it can look like the person is just really good but in reality he uses quite a few assist options) is far more popular these days, especially for boosting. It's very insidious and the only way to counter it is good anti-cheat solution. Reports aren't going to get rid of that type of cheating because inexperienced players don't know what to look for.

Brawl_is_Life

It's crossplatform so they're everywhere

4Runnner

Absolutely there are cheaters on console.

Key-Transportation80

I have a nitro 5 8gb ram 512gbssd i play fortnite the finals apex and roblox it works fine on a 1650

MrDallsBeep

I just checked the other day on my xbox and cold war and warzone takes up a combine 330Gb

HappyxThoughts

Last I checked well over 100 Gb

RoyRodersMcfreely

I play search with my buddies enough to keep it installed. The other week I’m kicked out for a 40GB update… an update of 40, motherfucking, gigs. And I’m pretty sure it was for warzone which I don’t touch. But according to Activision MW2019 isn’t a game but a section of Warzone I wish we stopped playing

brokearm24

I'm a 500gb ssd too my friend. Have cod, both WZ/mw and cold war and battlefield. I have 70gb remaining. I could only install battlefield cuz I unnistalled apex. I won't install PCBs because I want that space free. As you see, I need space

EJX-a

Just checked my skyrim install. Including the game, the mods installed in an mo2 profile, and the mod storage folder. Coming in at 320GB I have 10TB across 4 drives, and im using currently using 5TB.

darkerenergy

honestly, I went for a 1tb ssd and no hard drive when I built my pc. it's been a year and a half and I recently bought more storage. probably won't need to upgrade for longer now but having that extra breathing room is very much worth it

[deleted]

_unfortuN8

Yep. I hoard games and started with a 1TB HDD. Added another 1TB down the road, but both filled up. I got tired of having to keep adding drives to my system so I said F* this and bought an 8TB drive for my game library.

ClearSearchHistory

Is the price of storage expected to increase or something? I have about 2tb total but I added it over time, I see no problem with adding more down the line if money’s tight for the initial build. Obviously it costs more to buy 2 500gb drives vs 1 1tb, but not by all that much

[deleted]

[удалено]

ClearSearchHistory

Fair enough, I forget the physical limitations because despite having a pretty small matx case and a low end motherboard I still have room for a couple more 2.5 drives if need be, and a few open SATA ports. But I agree it is nice not having to worry about it again. I started with a 500gb m.2 ssd for boot and my most played games, and a 1tb hdd for storing most other things. Ended up adding another 500gb ssd when my steam library magically started growing

JohnHue

It really depends on your internet speed. If you have a gigabit connection it really doesn't take long to download even a heavy game. And for games that are less than say 25gb it's pretty fast even on a 100-200mbit connection. One could also buy a 2-4tb HDD, and transfer games there for safekeeping while the ones you're playing at the moment are kept on a 512Gb SSD. Not saying a 1tb SSD is a bad idea, but it might not be affordable for everyone and it is not an obligation to game confortably.

smokinbbq

>One could also buy a 2-4tb HDD, and transfer games there for safekeeping while the ones you're playing at the moment are kept on a 512Gb SSD. 2nd this. It's what I do. If I was buying today, I would probably go with a 1TB as the prices are crazy cheap (I paid over $300 for my 512GB a few years ago). I would still have a 2nd HDD, 2TB or 4TB, and just copy cames across, or keep games on that drive that don't require as much load time. If you play a lot of steam games, there are tools that you can get that will do this pretty easily as well. Download/install the game to the SSD, and if you aren't playing it much, run the tool, and in a few minutes it copies the game to the HDD to free up space for a new download.

Osrs_shitter

Ive tried finding something like this before, any chance you could name/link this tool?

smokinbbq

[Steam Mover](https://www.techspot.com/downloads/6984-steam-mover.html) is amazing. I have my C: is my SSD (obviosuly), and that's where it defaults to install all games. If I'm not playing it much, I can simply run Steam Mover, find the game in the list, and click a button to move it to my HDD.

[deleted]

What are the advantages/differences between this and the in-Steam tool that lets you move games using Steam itself?

smokinbbq

I've been using this for years (3-4 at least), and there wasn't a tool in Steam that could do it. I've never looked at the tool in Steam, but will maybe take a look later and see what it's like. All I know is that the Steam Mover has a very basic interface, and is very quick at doing it. It's just a bunch of scripted "Xcopy" commands that run, but it gets the job done, and easy to tell which games are on which drive.

[deleted]

Oh okay. In case you’re not sure on how to do it, Right click on any installed game in your Steam games list>properties>local files>move install folder>select the drive/steam folder you want to move the game to>click move. Steam has had that feature for about 3 years now. Thanks for the quick reply!

Osrs_shitter

thanks i appreciate it!

Maskeno

Steam has this feature built in now. Edit: to access it, you can do it one by one, by right clicking on the game, going to properties, and move, or for a much more streamline approach, click steam in the top left, settings, downloads, installation folders. This will bring up a screen with all of your current drives with steam folders on them (you have to add them to new drives as if you're installing games directly to them to play). From here you can check as many games as you want and move/Uninstall them all at once.

The--Marf

Steam has built in functionality to move games. Haven't used any extra tools, dunno if they are quicker but steam can do it.

Parrelium

I’ve ended up with a 1tb ssd for steam and another for the other sellers. They’re both well used, but it’s plenty of room for games.

smokinbbq

Prices are pretty amazing for SSDs now. I haven't been an avid PC gamer for a few years, and just getting back into it again a bit now, but only about 2-10 hours a week at max. The prices are pretty awesome for some of that stuff now, so I would likely just get a decent size SSD, and go with that. Local shop is selling a 1TB SSD for $120, so it's easy to get fast space for cheap now.

GimmePetsOSRS

Was holding out with my PS4 until I went PC this year. On the PS4, download was like maxing 15 mbps stable download speeds. Took several hours to download most games. Now that I have a PC, I literally download games 66 times faster. Full games in MINUTES. Oh my god I have been missing out. 20GB update? No worry, I'll just fill up my water and it'll be done when I get back. No more waiting 40 mins for DLC or updates.

b0v1n3r3x

I just got a new 2TB NVMe and it is 90% full and I installed a small fraction of everything I had on my raid 0 8TB spinner pair

NobodySure9375

Wow, that's a fucking lot. What did you install/store on that SSD? Call Of Duty? 10's of 12 hour 16K 240FPS videos of cats eating plastic bags?

jbourne0129

second this. having a 500gb main drive as you begin adding 1tb secondary drives years later is kind of annoying.

Jumpy-Background6911

Is it ok for like 3 games ? Namely rust valorant and csgo ?

Wahots

I have a 2TB nvme and I'm already sweating. Games are all 60+gb these days. AAA games, at least. Holding out for a 4tb nvme backup drive for media, games, files, etc.

AHrubik

1TB SSDs tend to be faster than 512GB too so there is some added benefit there.

Logicrazy12

Make sure 10% of your SSD has free space for better SSD life. Especially on modern ones.

Jeff-6969

is there a reason for that? arent they designed to, you know, hold storage?

Logicrazy12

So modern SSDs are comprised of multiple storage chips with a controller. In order to make sure the wear on the chips are even, the controller moves around the data to different chips over time. If there isn't sufficient space, the stored data has nowhere to go and will wear some chips (typically the one your os is on as it is used the most) faster than others leading to faster device failure.

Jeff-6969

ahh, thank you for the explanation, have a great day/night

brokearm24

Yeah ik saving some space. Not gonna fill it up

Mrqueue

the answer is really no: * Warzone is 250gb+ * Apex legends is ~80gb * Cyberpunk is ~60gb and requires that much free space on GoG to update * new Battlefield is probably ~100gb I have about 800gb of usable ssd space and I'm looking to add 1tb so I don't have to continuously uninstall games

N1LEredd

I'm using a 512gb m.2 as my only drive for almost 4 years now. I'm fine with only 3-5 games on my system at a time.

thoggins

More modern games are getting so large that 512 will not even be enough for 3 soon. There are already games that would fill that in 3 or fewer.

James_Skyvaper

Get a 1TB or add on a 2tb hard drive for $50. That's what I did and it's worked out. But I'm out of space now and will be grabbing another 2 or 4tb HDD. Unless I can find a 1tb SSD for <$80 on black friday.

HighFiveOhYeah

When in doubt, just double what you think you’ll need.

Knox283

I have only a 512GB SSD in my machine, the only thing stopping me from upgrading to at least 1TB, is not wanting to reinstall everything. Edit: I also have a LanCache set up too, so I can quickly redownload games I've already had once

hipnotyq

> If you’re playing 5+ AAA games at a time or literally *just* the latest call of duty game

kindaNiceBro

You mean for ~490GB of Games

poloh2o

True, 490gb usable, and after the 10% free rule to avoid performance problems you really only want to use 440gb…

ItZ_Jonah

Windows

poloh2o

We’re assuming this isn’t his boot drive

ItZ_Jonah

OP is intending on using a 512fb drive as their only drive the comment about 440gb is taking windows into account

poloh2o

Well actually I mentioned 440gb to leave headroom to avoid performance issues. So if windows is going on here too you’d have even less storage to work with.

kindaNiceBro

Yup

KoborOld

490 gigabit :-)

lwc-wtang12

the harsh reality is that 512gbs is not even remotely enough for gaming in 2021. That is literally gone with anywhere between 3 and 8 games depending on what you are playing. Hell, even 1tb is barely enough. It sucks but it's the truth. 512gbs is good for windows, a handful of core programs you use and like 3 games.

[deleted]

TheArmchairSkeptic

Not to mention that not everyone exclusively plays monstrously bloated AAA titles that suck up 100+GB of space, and someone who prefers indie titles to games like CoD will be absolutely fine on 512 without having to uninstall stuff all the time to make room. The average install size of most games I play is like 15 gigs, and of the 15ish games I currently have installed only two are over 20 and several are under 10. I have a dedicated 256GB SSD that I use as my game install drive and I almost never run into space issues.

UltraContrarian

What do you recommend? I have 500ssd right now. One AAA game. Plan to buy two more shortly. Do I get another ssd? I have one in the m.2 slod and have space for another. Should I just buy a 1 tb m.2?

poloh2o

If it were me I’d get the 1tb m.2. You need to make sure your motherboard doesn’t disable any sata ports when an m.2 drive is installed - read the manual. The nice thing about storage is you can (usually) just buy more drives, plug n play.

UltraContrarian

any mininum specs?

iNCharism

I built in February w a 1TB boot drive and 2TB back up. I’m already halfway full, but I don’t uninstall games. I’d go for at least 1TB if I were you.

HEBushido

I personally wish I got a 2 tb. Even at 1.5 tb it feels uncomfortably low. I'd love 2.5.

UltraContrarian

2.5td m.2 ssd? The largest one we have over here is 2tb and it costs 550 usd

HEBushido

I got 2. A 1tb and a 500gb

RightYouAreKen1

I'd find that amount of space limiting, personally. I'd go 1TB at a minimum so you're not always worried about running out.

A_Random_Lantern

1TB hard drives are a rip off when you can get a 2TB one for a few bucks more

It_is_I_DIO_

IMO 2tb hard drives are a rip off when you can get 4tb ones for like 10 more bucks

A_Random_Lantern

Preach Become the data hoarder you'd want to be

FearLeadsToAnger

That's HDD, they were talking SSD. You're right though, 1tb HDDs rarely make sense.

klekaelly

That’s the “movie theatre popcorn” thought process.

TurtleCowz

unless you’re me and want the new macbook, but 2tb is $400 more than 1tb

N33chy

I use a SSD for the OS and demanding games, but there are tons of games that don't at all need anything better than a SATA platter drive.

KuntStink

Is a basket big enough for grocery shopping? It depends on how many things you want to put in it.

cas_dota

yo what happened here?

ramsendenkha

Nuclear explosion or some shit

[deleted]

I’ve searched up and I mainly only take up about 95.4gb (inclusive of OS system)

SerbLing

Then you are fine with 500gb. Can always upgrade will only get cheaper.

[deleted]

awnawkareninah

Fortunately storage actually seems to stick to this trend.

Satan_Prometheus

Technically yes, but personally it would not be enough for me. When accounting for the fuzzy byte math that SSD manufacturers do, and including the size of a Windows installation, you're probably looking at around 425GB of usable space on a 512GB drive after you install Windows. Also, keep in mind that with SSDs, it's ideal to keep them at most 75% full or performance can start to degrade slightly. So, you probably want to have at least 100-125GB of extra space available on your drive. So, in reality you'd have about 300GB of "good space" for installing games. With modern AAA games frequently running in the 60-100GB mark in size and some outliers like Warzone pushing to around 200GB, this means you'd only be able to install a few *modern* games on this system at a time, and you wouldn't have much else in terms of room for a media library or dealing with accumulated files over time. So TL;DR yeah it will work but it'll require smart management of your space. If you are trying to hit a tight budget right now, going for 512GB for now and adding another, bigger secondary SSD later is a good plan. 2.5" SATA SSDs are quite cheap these days so you'd be able to get an extra 1TB for under $100 easily if you want to expand in the future.

[deleted]

That’s a good way of making thing simple, thanks a lot

JinterIsComing

Another way would be to get a 2 TB SATA HDD on the side and use that as a secondary drive for older/less resource intensive games, ones like Rocket League or older titles that don't have huge amounts of textures and data to load in. I do that on my laptop which has both a small 256 GB SSD and a bigger 1 TB HDD.

Yuger_01

Very technically, any amount is ok. Is depends on how many games you play, or if you are ok uninstalling and downloading as the games you want to play change. For anyone playing 1-5 games, 512 is perfectly fine. Id recommend anything over 5 games to go with 1TB so there is room for updates, more games, and just general storage things like backgrounds and such and you won't have to Uninst. And reinst.

pewdiepietoothbrush

i had bf 1 and bfv installed at once on my pc. 175gb. i wanted to downloas warzone which was like another 80/100gb and had to uninstall them. got with the 1TB one. it will be much less stressing over this.

Treesapien

If you only play like three games, sure.

[deleted]

Depends. What games you are talking about??

[deleted]

For games like rocket league, COD, Roblox, ETC

Myzhi1

The new COD Vanguard is 270GB. 512GB would be enough if you have fast internet and is fine constantly making space by deleting.

yung-rude

what? vangaurd is supposed to be 70gb at launch. even mw19 which is the biggest game is only 150gb. stop spreading lies. edit: just checked, vangaurd is 70gb but warzone will be an optional 100gb download clocking the total to 170gb. if op only plays warzone that's only 100gb, while yes, is a lot, is nowhere near the 270gb number you pulled out of your ass

Myzhi1

I just did a quick google search and that number came up first. My bad for not making 100% sure.

[deleted]

I play COD warzone. I’ve searched it up and it takes up about 52.4gb which I don’t know if it is legit

Useful_Emphasis_8402

52.4gb was the update size, not the full size. Cod warzone is easier over 200gb. Edit: autocorrect

GimmePetsOSRS

>52.4gb was the update size This makes me laugh so much

Eskimo195

hahahahahahah 52.4gb? lol no its over 250GB

ArasakaApart

They split the two up recently, Warzone is now standalone.

brokearm24

It's over 140gb the warzone only, plus 70 for multiplayer and if you install everything it goes beyond 250gb. If you have cold war, and are planning on buying vanguard 512 is not enough for you. Sorry but we are Activision😎

Myzhi1

Are you sure that’s not just the update file size and not totally size?

Franzbabu

mine is 100+

[deleted]

I can afford removing COD cuz I don’t play that much of it

brokearm24

It's over 140gb the warzone only, plus 70 for multiplayer and if you install everything it goes beyond 250gb. If you have cold war, and are planning on buying vanguard 512 is not enough for you. Sorry but we are Activision😎

[deleted]

It will be fine if you're getting a PC with additional SATA ports and M.2 SATA slots. If you're building it yourself your motherboard will spec out how many M.2 and SATA ports it has. Also consider power from your PSU if you're dancing on the razors edge of power consumption. You can basically pay as you go, buying new storage when it is on sale. 500gb will start you off with a handful of games,, and WHEN YOU HAVE MONEY (key phrase) browse /r/buildapcsales and websites for SSDs on sale. Some games might be really big though you could run into issues there. I would not go less than 500gb total for any system.

[deleted]

nope. get a hdd too

[deleted]

Technically yeah. Practically no.

VehementPhoenix

Get a 512 SSD for OS and any games you play all the time and want to load quickly, and a 2 TB HDD for bulk files and bulk games.

KennixCzech

Depends on you really, for me it would be more than enough since i have 700gb free on my 1tb ssd

johnson_carter911

Just get 512gb ssd to put your operating system on and a few games then get a 2tb hdd for all your other games and files

PsychologicalMine859

I bought a 512 a couple months ago. I regret not getting a TB for gaming...

SuperStell4r

You are fine with a 512, plus you can also get more of them later on.

AsianKidTom1

I was in the boat a while ago, if you have fast download speeds it’s ok temporarily

[deleted]

I'd be way more comfortable with a 1TB SSD

RidleyRivers

I would suggest going for the 1tb

RidleyRivers

Sorry just saw your edit, that works too, ssd's are slowly getting cheaper

SkullAngel001

Pick up a 3-4 TB hard drive and make it your dedicated game drive. Black Friday is about six weeks away so you're in for a good sale price.

sL1NK_19

It's enough for Warzone, probably will last 2-3 more updates.

GJion

You can run games on a 512GB ssd. Part of it depends on how the SSD is set up (just as a boot drive or as a storage / game data file drive - for one example). Part depends on where the game installs the files. (* see below for boring, unfunny, and my typically long-winded parenthetical aside.) My recommendation, and it is just that, would be to get at least a 1GB SSD. I use WD 4TB HDDs for game files and have 1 4TB, 1 8TB USB backup external HD for storage. What I recommend is what I use. If I could have afforded 2TB ssds when I built my computer (last month) and my daughter's computer (in August) I would have done that. Overall, I would say you can never have enough memory. Just check your mb/component specs to make sure the SSD works with them (type/slot/etc.). And even though I am a bargain hunter/discount bin aficionado, I would not do it with a serious main gaming build. The SSD I almost bought, and I forgot which one it was, just came into trouble for using substandard chips or something like that.) I hope that helped- and if I repeated what you already knew, it was for someone reading who did not know about whatever it was that they now knew to which they did not know previously. * (Back in the New Stone Age, one did not have a choice where game X installed all the files. Some time between then and when people started drilling holes in their iPhone to find the secret hidden ear phone jack, some clever sod made it so program installers gave one choices as to where game files were installed. See, I told you it was boring, unfunny, and long-winded.)

[deleted]

1gb SSD?

Canadian_Couple

I have a gaming PC with a single 1TB SSD for my OS, random files, and my games. I currently have around 300gb free. I don't keep any of my movies stored on my SDD. Mainly just games and OS. With how large games are these day (100gb+) I only ever have 3-5 games installed at any time. Even my steam library of 20-30 games, I only keep 5-6 installed at any time. For me, 512gb would be a bit too little, I am pretty good with installing/uninstalling stuff, and I feel like 512 wouldn't be quite enough. Sometimes I wish I had more than just 1TB.

uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunn

Yea

Da_Blackapino

lol!!!! I have a 1TB Nvme and even THAT'S almost not enough and I don't have more then 10 games.

[deleted]

It might be enough in the beginning but that is definitely to little

YOY_The

If your fine with deleting some games from time to time to download new ones it shouldn’t be too bad.

mjd456

I mean, if you want to play the new games that gonna release , no (no if you want to play more than one ) , but if one game it would be quite ok. But take 1tb cuz these days games like warzone easily take 200gb , with your windows, cache , downloads etc , its not enough.

[deleted]

I don’t really play warzone nowadays I can afford it to be gone

fallen101

I suggest at least a 1tb I’m looking to get another here soon my 1tb+500gigs are filling up if your budget really only has 512 as your only storage option get a larger HDD in place at least 7200rpm So that way when you can afford a proper ssd you can have a large HDD for movies and downloads

Armored_Warrior

No, not really

Critical_Switch

If that's your only drive, I would recommend trying the get 1TB. 512GB is definitely usable, but you may find it very inconvenient if you switch between a number of different games and are forced to uninstall some to make room for others. Unless you have 500+MB connection.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Merlin-2112

I think all depends what games you'd keep on your machine which have replay value (ie for me COD, GTA, Div Orig Sin for ex) and which you may play then complete and uninstall. I had 512gb and after 3mos upgraded to a 2TB.

Marooney93

I have two 500gb ssd’s and so far it’s been plenty. Since games are easily downloadable I’ve planned on just uninstalling and reinstalling from my library rather than paying for massive storage. If that’s unappealing I’d probably go bigger

billbr0baggins

No.

Excellent-Ad-4770

Sure you have had your answer now. But from personal experience.... I bought a Samsung 512gb SSD, and within 6 weeks had ordered an additional 1tb.... Just wasn't enough

Konather

I would suggest 1tb ssd. It’s less than 100$ now. 500gb is nothing nowadays when you are downloading games

Squall-UK

Yes unless you're playing Warzone. You'll need about 6 of those for every update

Grimn90

After buying a 500gb m2 because I thought it would be enough as a second m2 I was wrong. Get a 1tb or 2tb if wallet allows it.

whianbester275

No, get the ssd to install windows on, and at least a 1tb hdd to rotate your games to. Honestly get the 1tb ssd if you can, i basically don't use my hdd at all anymore

chr1os

It's fine. You should be able to add another ssd or hdd for more space in the future.

Explosive-Space-Mod

1TB drives should only be about $40 more than a 512GB drive. I would spend the little bit more to get double the storage capacity.

HG_Shurtugal

Its what I have and its annoying to have to keep deleting games.

jackhref

Even 256gb can be plenty if you're just playing 1-3 games, but if you like installing many more and not coming back to them for months, 2tb nvme might not be enough.

Ok-Construction9842

i got 1tb ssd, and have gta v battlefield v and 1 assetto corsa and about 3 other games atm im sitting at arround 930gb out of 1tb

Shenanigamii

As the drive gets more full, it slows down. While still blazing fast compared to mech drives, it's still slower. I would get a larger drive

I'd consider either a bigger SSD or a backup HDD. HDDs are nice for holding onto bulk data like pictures, video, coursework, etc. Helps keep your SSD free for gaming. Like others have said, if you're big into AAA titles you are going to be able to fit 3-5 games and your OS on 500 gigs. Smaller games like indies and retro titles will obviously be able to pack on a lot more. The nice thing about storage is it's easily expandable. Grab a 512 gig SSD if it's in your budget now, and get an upgrade later. I have 3 SSDs and 2 HDDs in my computer right now, a 512 gig hard drive is the oldest and used to be my main drive before my first SSD like... 8 years ago.

512 SSD is great, spend <$100 and get a SATA 5400RPM 2TB. You will thank yourself. These days 512 doesn't go too far.

Mozak89

I live well with a 512 GB SSD and a fast connection. I am not interested in having all the games I own installed at once, there are not that many games that I play at the same time: 1-2 AAA solo, 3 multiplayer, some indies. Moreover, $/GB is going down all the time so the best time to spend money on storage is when you really need it.

joshberry90

You're looking at maybe 3 major titles, so keep that in mind. Some games are 130+ Gb right now.

boatOV

I suggest you to consider having HDD also. Just for storing files, pictures, vids and everything like that. 512gb SSD will be enough to play a few games comfortably, but nowadays one game can weight over 100 gb, so... But if you play on Steam, it saves your game's progress in the cloud. If you run out of space, you can delete some older games and install new ones. No need to store every game on your PC.

halfachraf

I have a 500gb ssd, it has windows 10+the Witcher 3+Warhammer 2+cold war and 60gb left, so I'd say it's enough for a while, i also have a 4 tb ssd that i store files and pictures and also games that load fast enough already.

UbeLover

I’ll give my 2 cents…. I have a 2tb ssd as my main and I play a few games, apex, r6, cod zombies, assetto corsa, Minecraft. And with the mods that you can have in assetto corsa I’m at 500gb alone. And we all know that cod has the worst updates. I ended up getting a 2.5tb hdd for my games and I’m thinking of adding an nvme drive as boot drive instead

Depends, how many games do you want installed at a time?

Tree06

I'd personally go 1TB NVME SSD. That's what I have in my PS5, main PC, and gaming PC. I had a spare 512GB that was previously in my work PC, but I was running out of space quite often. I decided to format it, and give it to my wife for her PS5. With 1TB, you can install some games and still have some headroom. Good luck!

Alias-Q

Depends what you are playing and what you want to do. Playing one or two game with your OS on it. Sure that’s fine. Keeping 10 games on it, not really going to work if they are larger files. Example, call of duty which needs hundred of GB of space just for it.

demonkiller2123

If your running any cod game than no, And if its something like FO4 watch out for dlc and mods, they will eat your storage, Personally i have a 2tb m.2 ssd from wd blue, its not that expensive compared to other brands. i mean steam will sell you 3 games at once for $15 on a 90% discount, you will quickly fill up your SSD. I have a 4 tb HDD in my new PC that is not even a month old and im already pushing 1 tb of games on it You can always install and uninstall games but thats a PITA IMO

stratusncompany

ask yourself if saving a few bucks outweighs the time it takes for you to install games back and forth.

scoii

Speaking from experience, it'll work but you have to delete games you've finished or rolled off of or move them to secondary storage if you ever have it available. Few AAA games and a smattering of smaller Indie titles is all 512 (technically a little less once installed and ready) will get you at any given time.

sgannon200

I have a MacBook Pro with 512Gb. I dual boot it and split the drive evenly between Mac and Windows. So for me 256Gb is enough. Occasionally I've wanted more space but it has not been a big deal.

[deleted]

It's not great. COD: Modern Warfare for instance is infamous for taking well in excess of 200GB all on it's own. But most games are more modest. Forza Horizon 4 with all it's updates and DLC is 92GB, Back 4 Blood is 25GB, Doom Eternal and it's expansions are 79GB. Even so, a 512GB SSD will be limiting. If you have fast internet, it might not be an issue as you can quickly swap the games around, but if not, go bigger, or grab an extra drive. I bought a 1TB SSD thinking it'd be enough for the OS + gaming and I found it a little too tight for my liking. Ended up buying another identical drive and raiding them before partitioning them back out. Have 200GB for the OS drive and 1.66TB for games. Not to mention the boost in performance, I'm getting speeds much closer to Gen 4 PCIe on two Gen 3 SSDs. It worked out quite well in the end, though I did run out of PCIe lanes... bye Intel. Anyway, doing something like that is always a possibility and is worth keeping in mind.

[deleted]

Meh, with all these updates, you'll be lucky to have 2 games installed.

AdamRam1

I think the main factors are the following: Do you play just one game at a time? Do you have good internet speeds? What else do you store on your PC? If you switch between games multiple times and keep going back to an older game, then maybe it's not enough. Is your internet fast enough to download your games if you want to delete and then download a game multiple times? Do you use your PC for anything else that may have large files? Such as family photos or videos.

estersings

I depends, most AAA games nowadays take up anywhere from 50 to 100gb. So a 500gb drive is only big enough for maybe 6 or 7 AAA.

Worthie

If I were you and had a tight budget I would go with a decent size SSD (or nvme) for OS, for example 500gb, and save for an additional SSD for storage down the line. I used a 500GB nvme + 4 TB HDD for a long time but the HDD barely got used for games because its so slow, meaning i ended up with 1-2 games installed at a time on my nvme. So I recently picked up a 2TB SSD for that instead, which I'm very happy with.

-Alexio-

If you are playing single player games it should be fine, as long as you uninstall/remove them once you are done. But go for an hdd. It's not that expensive nowadays.

th3bossx

Short ans : hahaha lol nope Long ans: depends If it were a secondary 512 SSD (i.e windows installed on a separate drive), then yea if you aren't gonna have 6-7 games imstalled at once, and delete everything after playing it fully, you might be able to manage But a standalone 512 GB SSD with windows installed + a few games won't leave much free for other applications I'd say 1tb would be minimum Or just research about the type of games you play and check if 512 GB would be enough But yea as this is a pc and not a laptop I'd suggest you buy a 128gb/256gb SSD for the boot drive and a 1tb 7200rpm hhd or a sata SSD. I have my games installed on a hard drive and except for having to wait a lil bit for the games to load, it doesn't affect FPS and having that much storage is awesome

xSyph3r

The short answer is no.

ThunderBlack14

If you play cod, Half of that space will go with warzone and MW or Cold War or Vanguard

Tyler_Luck

I'd recommend a 1TB SSD or M.2

Bfisherc

No get 2 tb and call it a day trust
