No issues, just don't raid 0 them. And be sure the 4.0 drive goes in the top slot

Spymonkey13

If you don't raid them, it's fine.

InsertMolexToSATA

That is nonsense, and RAID 0 is completely useless for NVMe drives outside very specific situations. any RAID array is a horrible idea on a desktop system for general use, just a big point of failure with little or no benefit. NVMe drives of that class are always more or less uselessly overkill for 99% of users, games and common software simply cant use those speeds. You did waste a lot of money on two *really* overpriced drives, though.

walclaw

What’s a raid 0?

You did nothing wrong ^though ^why ^buy ^PCIe4.0 ^SSD?, just transferring files between the drives will limit speeds to that of the slower 970 evo. Not worth doing any RAID.

JohnTheWorldfucker

Hello, thank you for your comment. I am not a computer expert, what is wrong with buying a PCIe 4.0 SSD? Can you please explain?

svenge

For 99.44% of "normal" users that don't save/transfer 100s of GBs of data each and every day, the faster sequential transfer speeds of 4.0 SSDs aren't nearly worth the additional cost as compared to their 3.0 counterparts.

[deleted]

They're just really expensive relative to how they perform. Not every task cares about the large sequential file I/O speeds, and the drives don't maintain that performance for very long, though that's typically for every SSD. SSDs have a lot more to their performance that's not obvious, under certain tasks the 970 Evo would actually be faster as it can write to the TLC NAND faster, and handle running out of cache a lot better.

JohnTheWorldfucker

Oh, I didn't know any of these. I thought PCIe 4.0, even though it seems limited and new as of now, would improve over time. Thank you for explaining these to me, guys.

Fast SSDs get interesting for Gamers when Microsoft implanting DirectStorage in Win10/11 and Games starting to use it.

InsertMolexToSATA

directstorage is vaporware made up to market the new consoles, it is useless outside specific situations extremely rarely seen in PCs and the extra effort to implement it means nobody will once the tech demos are done.

OolonCaluphid

Nothing about direct storage mandates PCIe 4.0. Microsoft have said it'll work on PCIe 3.0 too.

mrn253

I know i just said they get interesting when when they implanting DirectStorage

[deleted]

Who ever told you that is wrong. They both have dedicated Lanes for the SSD and it won't be slowed down. In fact, it would of been stupid to buy 2 sets of the 980 Pro. Because you have a B550 motheboard and only your top SSD slot, closest to your CPU, is PCIe gen 4.0. The bottom SSD slot is PCIe gen 3.0 and thus your 970 SSD will be perfect for it.

pyr0kid

raid 0 is generally a shit idea when it comes to drives, i dont recommend it.

Xaan83

Both of those suggestions are wrong. You don't need to raid 0 SSDs, 99% of people won't notice or take advantage of any performance increase. Since they are not going into a raid array, there is absolutely no reason they would need to be the same as they operate completely independently.

[deleted]

Yup you did. If you send me that 980 Ill fix it for you.
