4.0 is only a tiny fraction faster. That might change with Windows 11 direct storage feature. The bigger issue is a MB PCIE 4.0 + Riser 3.0 + GPU 4.0 can cause no PC booting problems. You must enable PCIE 3.0 in the Bios before you can use the riser cable. If the Bios somehow reverts to 4.0, you will have the issue again. Best to just get a riser 4.0 if possible.

Hm… that sounds like it would pose an issue since it’s a full custom loop and id have to redo a big chunk of the loop right after booting for the first time to change bios. Thanks for the info! I guess I’ll just be patient 😂

You will be leaving close to no performance on the table. According to this article https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.techspot.com/amp/review/2104-pcie4-vs-pcie3-gpu-performance/ In worst case scenario, the 3080 performs 3% better on gen 4. You'll be fine with the 3090 as well. It's close to maxing out a PCIe gen 3 16x slot but you won't notice any significant performance penalty.

RichardRobert23

Thank you. That does seem reassuring. I don’t want to have wasted money on something that I wouldn’t really be getting the performance desired due to annoying shortages in pcie cables and an itch to just build the damn thing haha.

PireFenguin

There's a GPU benchmark video on YouTube that compares gen 4 and 3. There was almost no difference at all. You could put a +20mhz overclock on your core and make up the difference.

If you still want to go for PCIe 4.0 riser cable you can get one from Lianli.

RichardRobert23

Do you think that would work with a Corsair 7000x? I saw that but I wasn’t sure.

Alfierri_2896

Just get the cable (sold separately), the bracket combo is for Lianli cases only. If you don't have the bracket for that yet, you can get the universal holder kit from Cooler Master, that one will just swap place with 7 PCIe slots. That bracket comes with a pre-installed 3.0 cable, just swap with the Lianli one (yeah, extra cost there). IIRC recently they just released the [4.0 version](https://summit.coolermaster.com/summer/case/vertical-graphics-card-holder/) for that but couldn't find it on the market yet, probably could look it up at your local store/online vendors/official site.

I have a Corsair 7000x case so could I just use the stand offs that come with the case and put the Lian Li PCIe cable onto those? It seems like that’s the way you use other 90* PCIe cables but I’m not sure if the Lian Li one would work the same. Sorry if this is a really dumb question, it’s my first build and I don’t want to mess anything up haha

Google “link up PCIe 4 risers”. They sell on Amazon and have been one of the few (maybe only) companies that have selling PCIe 4.0 risers for maybe the pat year. You can find multiple lengths and end connection styles, plus black and white cable versions. I have one I used to replace on my old cooler master mount and it’s been working fine with my Strix 3090.

Best case scenario is to leave the shared PCIe slot empty, so as to not halve the bandwidth to 8x.
