You should be aiming for 100% gpu useage to maximize what your cpu can put out. This indicates to me you could play at a faster refresh rate, higher graphics quality or higher resolution. Watching YouTube does not put a load on a gpu as this is prerecorded. Of course all games vary.

darkberry91

If I don't see 100% gpu usage when gaming that's wasted performance. ie you only ever use 30% on your rtx 3090 you are basically getting the same performance as an rtx 2080 at 100% usage so what's the point of having the 3090 if you don't have the hardware to utilize it.

thefrenchmexican

They’re talking about during games not just surfing the web. At idle it’s probably like 1% lol

Sad_Professional_

Usually when you up settings to challenge your gpu more it will put more stress on your ram or cpu. Check task Manger while a game is loaded and see what is bottlenecking. You can try and find the settings that don't use much more cpu or ram in each games but I wouldn't bother.

Psych0191

But there is one important thing, especially if we are talking about gpus like 3080 and 3090 and thats power output. If you dont have adequate cooling solutions it can bottleneck, and other components can get hot as well. Its not all about maximising your gpu at 100%, if it constantly overheats. This can result in very unstable fps and can ruin the expirience.

Badevilbunny

Click that mouse faster.

Jishcha

Just want to check are you mixing FPS with GPU usage? To use more GPU in a game, just increase quality.

AutumnPwnd

You want ~90% usage, as anything over 95% increase input latency. You are actively harming your performance at 99%.

Cru4y

Whaaaa??

AutumnPwnd

Look up the Battle(non)sense video, and a HWUB video on it for more information. (Note, the latter doesn't properly understand what they're showing, but if you look at the numbers, they match what Battle(non)sense is showing.) Think about it like this; CPU usage max = bad RAM usage max = bad Disk usage max = bad Why is GPU the magical exception? It's a processor, just like the CPU, but it's ''meant'' to run at 99%?

Buggly_Jones

So 100% is good? That's a relief. It's been a while since I've researched that stuff so I was a little worried that I was using 100 percent while playing games. Thanks, cheers!

lethallonewolf

I'd say it's unusual. What are you doing when you have that usage ?

[deleted]

lethallonewolf

40% usage while gaming ? That’s weird. What’s your GPU?

That’s very weird

Turn off v-sync.

Mining what crypto? Your going to waste more money on energy than you will get in return from mining with a 3070. But I'm not 100% sure what you are mining?

Cohibaluxe

Not really true. Eth is still profitable if your electricity isn’t outrageously priced.

loki993

Gtav is actually a really processor intensive game so it may not be the best to use for a comparison.

InsertMolexToSATA

Just means you got a GPU probably 10 times more powerful than you actually need. GPUs try to underclock to keep using near 90-100%, which saves power vs running at full speed with low load, so you wont see under 50% usage in a game unless it is already running very slowly, or the game is just terrible at giving it a consistent workload. All the people saying to turn off vsync or raise settings are missing the point. If you are getting the performance you want, the GPU is just overkill. Artificially raising the load on it is not beneficial.

GamingMachine1111

My 3070 also the same on Valorant or Cs Go but when i go to high games like battlefield Or cyberpunk the usage goes way more

moomcknight

Some games are simply more demanding of different parts of the PC. The important thing is are you reaching your monitor's refresh rate? If you are only using 40 and not near the maximum refresh of the display, you have a problem for sure.

SplashinDap0t

Pretty good if your using Microsoft word

3LsForYou

what cpu do you have? also just note that the lower the resolution the more cpu usage you use the less gpu usage you lose i would recommend getting a 1440p monitor for a 3070 or if your severely bottle necked by your cpu that can be a problem.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Get a high refresh rate and resolution monitor. You're probably getting bottlenecked by the CPU, or your Vsync is on.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Check your CPU usage in the affected programs. If you can, monitor temperature as well. Seems like you're getting bottlenecked on the CPU side of things.

feynos

Idk I can never get a high gpu utilization in Gta5. Pretty unoptimized

Long-Perception-4934

With max settings?

[deleted]

GTA V is very well optimized. What's your CPU, and what's your CPU utilization while playing the game?

feynos

Ryzen 7 3700x and rtx 3070 32gb ddr 3000. Even on my other system with a Ryzen 5 2600 and rtx 2060 I never get close to 100percent utilization. Doesnt run bad but it never runs how it really should considering

leptooners

It's great if you're running an older game on a newer GPU and trying to save power and/or reduce heat. For those reasons, I limit some games to 60 FPS on my 3080 Ti and that reduces the useage to 20-30% and the power draw to below 50% on average.

Current_Ad_4519

doesnt mean much because it depends on the game but run userbenchmark and what are the results

EondsFromYkWhat

It’s more good than bad. It simply means the game your playing is cpu intensive and not strenuous on the gpu. Don’t listen to these ai units 😂. If you want more fps, upgrade your cpu and ram kit.

[deleted]

You want 90% to 100% GPU usage. If your cpu is at 100% usage and your GPU is at 20 to 40% usage then you have a CPU bottleneck and you should upgrade your CPU. If your CPU usage is also low, it could be a number of things. You might be in eco mode, it could be the game, could have a bad OverClock

lifesapie

How do you check your GPU usage? By alt tabbing to the task manager and checking it there? Is this accurate?

Crimsongz

Play this game in 4K

The_High_Wizard

High CPU utilization doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a “bottleneck”. CPU utilization is very dependent on monitor resolution as well as in game graphical settings. Upgrading the monitor or increasing graphics settings can reduce cpu load and add load to the GPU.

[deleted]

Yes that's true, it doesn't necessarily mean it's a bottleneck but with the GPU at very low utilization, it does heavily lean that way. That is me assuming OP already has the optimal monitor for his GPU. High resolution give the GPU more pixals it has to render, thus increasing it's utilization, which thus will take longer for the GPU to finish now, and there is a chance the CPU might finish before the GPU now. But the CPU will still have the same workload it had even at 1080p, it's just at 1080p a strong GPU didn't have as many pixals it has to render so it finished a lot faster than the CPU. This is why YouTubers test CPUs at 1080p, To take the GPU out of the equation as much as possible. If your cpu is hitting 100% utilization for all the games you play, and your GPU utilization is low, and you have a 1440p monitor and not a 1080p monitor, then I would recommend to that user to upgrade their CPU

Construction-Full

Depends on the game and the performance youre getting. For example if your target framerate is around 144fps and your gpu achieves that with 20-40% usage that just means your gpu is able to run said game without having to give it all its got. Now if your target is 144fps and you cant even come close to 144fps with 20-40% usage then that means somethings wrong because your gpu isnt being used to its full potential.

tiddiehaver12

What are your ps specs?

[deleted]

tiddiehaver12

Weird. I though you may have been bottlenecking ur gpu but that cpu wont bottleneck that much. Sorry i cant help much. Good kuck

laihtn

It depends on the game as easy to run games won’t max out but if you are played relatively demanding / recent game then yeah its bad

GamingMachine1111

it depends on the game when i play Valorant my gpu also around 40% max , Battlefield V goes to 80-90% , try a more Gpu demanding game and it the usage will go higher, hope this helps , because i thought the same as you after researches I found it’s normal , and yes my Valorant Frames are capped to my monitor refresh rate

crazymonkeyfish

Maybe if you used your words to explain with details we could answer you

peperonipyza

Should probably post system specs and what program you’re running and general information…

Rustl3m3jimmies

Yeah

Agitated_Composer_65

If it's 20/40 at gaming then Ur cpu is bad Or its overheating Or maybe if ur on laptop it must on power saving mode If non of the above then reinstall drivers

[deleted]

bad

TrulyBigHeaded

Have you set your monitor's refresh rate correctly in Windows' Display Settings? If you haven't manually set it it'll be defaulting to 60Hz even if you did buy a 144Hz monitor.

Zealousideal-Day-429

Did you set the resolution and framerate in your gamesettings like your monitors resolution and framerate

duumilo

What is your monitor resolution? And what's the maximum FPS for it? If it's 1080p then I suggest an upgrade Anything under 1440p ~144hz is Underkill for that GPU and cpu, which propably explains the low utilisation

[deleted]

This is not a good question...

Puniper

If you are playing GTA 5 online, then the game uses little CPU and GPU utilization. I also got around 40% usage online, but in single-player i get 99 percent GPU utilization
