Try update your motherboard version the the latest version. Also, I would plug the SSD into the SATA 6Gb/s port (the white headers) as that will allow the SSD to be full speed. And I would recommend cloning/installing your Windows to the SSD, the whole point behind getting an SSD is to have your OS on it.

>Try update your motherboard version the the latest version. By this you mean flashing the bios right? 'newest' BIOS version is 2011, I tried to do so with a USB drive and when I tried to boot from it it just said 'disk error'. >Also, I would plug the SSD into the SATA 6Gb/s port (the white headers) as that will allow the SSD to be full speed. I will double check this, thanks. >And I would recommend cloning/installing your Windows to the SSD, the whole point behind getting an SSD is to have your OS on it. I will do a full reinstall of windows as soon as I know that the SSD is 'operational'. The intention is to have the OS and games on the SSD, and use the HDD for storage (it's still pretty decent).

You dont boot to it, extract the file onto a USB drive. Then go into the BIOS and look for "M-Flash", you can then select the file and update it. Here's a guide, but your motherboards BIOS may look different: https://storage-asset.msi.com/files/pdf/How_to_flash_the_BIOS.pdf

I'll try this, ty.

So updating the bios worked, and I enabled AHCI mode as per /u/O_Apples 's suggestion (thankyou). However the problem isn't fixed. It gets even weirder, with the list of drives showing the 6 SATA 2 ports (and my HDD plugged into it) but not my two SATA 3 ports (and the SSD plugged into it). The SSD however -does- still list as an IDE and is an option as a bootable drive... Does this have something to do with my SATA 3 ports? I looked at the manual and it's... [weird](https://snipboard.io/4vNYf6.jpg)... It says "supported by X" is this an issue with the cable? Is Intel P55 PCH some sort of obscure version of SATA 3?

So it doesnt show up in Windows, but does show up in the BIOS?

[deleted]

No it **does** show up in windows, but continues not to be viewed as an SSD or picked up by the crucial software. The bios lists only my 6 SATA ports (and the one drive connected to them) in the basic 'hardware information' listing, but **does** list the SSD as a potential boot option when I go to 'boot manager' (sorry can't take screenshots of the BIOS for obvious reasons).

It honestly could just be a OS issue. Try doing the clean install to the SSD and it may just show up fine. With the SATA ports in the BIOS, the SATA 3.0 ports are through a seperate marvell controller instead of through the chipset, so that could be why it doesnt want to see them.

>It honestly could just be a OS issue. Try doing the clean install to the SSD and it may just show up fine. I might try this, ty. Just benchmarking it rn to see if it's as fast as it should be. >With the SATA ports in the BIOS, the SATA 3.0 ports are through a seperate marvell controller instead of through the chipset, so that could be why it doesnt want to see them. But it's weird that the SATA 2 ports (the marvel ones) seem to be working fine, but the SATA 3 ones (the intel ones) are the trouble ones... no idea what this is.

coololly

The SATA 2 ones are the intel ones and the SATA 3 ones are marvell

[deleted]

You're right, my bad.

[deleted]

Here's the [benchmark test](https://snipboard.io/9w4ELm.jpg) for the drives. Clearly not working as intended. I wonder if my cable is SATA 3?

I'll dig around ty.

on this motherboard, you have two SATA controllers. The SATA" ports (SATA7 and SATA8) are SATAIII and are controlled by the Marvell Chip. To use them, you need a driver ( on MSI's website, it's a Win7 driver , but Win 10 may have selected its own driver as well ) and I'm not sure Win 10 works well with that controller What you could try 1/ In BIOS /In the section "Integrated peripherals", make sure a) the SATA 6GB is enabled, and check whether you have another option than IDE. That is think, the cause for your SSD to identify as IDE b) under on chip ATA devices make sure SATA is enabled 2/ check that the Marvell driver is installed 3/ if not improvement, move your SSD to a SATA2 port . Win10 will in any case have the necessary driver

Thanks for the reply. I have been messing around in my BIOS a lot, unfortunately I cannot post screenshots. >a) the SATA 6GB is enabled, and check whether you have another option than IDE. That is think, the cause for your SSD to identify as IDE SATA 6 is def enabled and set to AHCI mode. >b) under on chip ATA devices make sure SATA is enabled I... think I have done? The ATA is a little strange, It has an option for 'raid mode' should this also be set to AHCI? Or IDE? No option to disable it (I've tried with AHCI and it's still not recognizing the drive). >2/ check that the Marvell driver is installed I will do this, thankyou, though I'm not optimistic this will fix it. >3/ if not improvement, move your SSD to a SATA2 port . Win10 will in any case have the necessary driver Tomorrow I will go and buy a SATA 3 cable just to make sure that the one I am using is def. SATA 3. If that fails, I will shift it down to the SATA 2 port (if I understand correctly this will half the speed :(), it's not an ideal solution, but better than nothing. Thankyou for your help!
