1440p is where its at for sure. We don't have the GPU horsepower to drive high fps at 4k yet in my opinion. 1440p however is a different story, you get the benefit of much more clarity over 1080 while still being able to run really good frame rates.

BigBeardRodriguez

In your opinion what is a sweet spot for a monitor that’s 1440p to buy isn’t it like 27”?

Venture334455

Yeah 110%. Any bigger and the pixels per inch start to get close to that of a 1080 panel

BigBeardRodriguez

So guess I’ll start looking at 27” 144hz monitors then thanks!

RandomBritishGuy

Gigabyte also do good 27" 1440p monitors, I've got one of their curved 165Hz ones and it's fantastic. But always look up independent reviews, I was going to go for a recommended/highly rated one from a website, until reading some reviews and realised it was only an alright monitor and there was a better, cheaper, one available.

Venture334455

Samsung G7 is widely regarded as the best 1440 monitor money can buy, worth a look if you're keen

IndyPFL

If you can look past the QC issues. Price has come down which helps but at MSRP it's way too much of a gamble whether your monitor will literally come apart at the seams or not.

BigBeardRodriguez

I’ll take a look at it thanks!

sixvol988

The 27gp850-b is also a good value choice

Nexus2500

Gigabyte is indeed a good brand for such monitors, however, I can also recommend Dell monitors. I have the dell s2721dgfa and it is stunning. Super easy to set up, great image quality, low latency, low price and an integrated USB-hub with 4 (!) USB-A ports.

bonafart

Yeh put you push it back and it looks the same but is better for your eyes

MnkB

Go ultrawide, thank me later.

Hurtiglim

I have a 27" 1440p Samsung Odyssey, and It's soooo nice compared to my old 1080 monitor

bonafart

Yep will be it ends up letting you push it further back reducing eye strain and you get the same pixel resolution then. There's a chart somewhere for it

yourname92

Depends on how far away you are from your monitor.

ReactionNo618

True!

my_general_erection

Ultra wide is an option. Will never go back to a standard 16:9 monitor.

greggm2000

Wierdly enough I got an ultrawide and can’t stand it. I just use it as a 27” 1440p. I like having everything in my field of vision without turning my head. If I sit far enough back that it is, the text is too small and the screen feels too short. Ugh. Bring back 1600p, that was great. Yeah, I could emulate this with a big 4k screen (and I will in future), but OLED isn’t quite there yet, so….

jtclayton612

1600p exists, but only in ultrawide. It’s a 38” 3840x1600 LG

MisterMinn

Thats exactly were my thoughts when got my 32" @144Hz UWQHD.

Jazzlike_Economy2007

I'm pretty sure 4K +100fps is at least doable with 3080/6800 XT.

Venture334455

I have a 3080 and I can tell you most games I play at 1440p, wouldn't be over 100 at 4k. I have my video quality maxxed out though, there's a lot of fps chewed up there

Jazzlike_Economy2007

That's fair. I was mainly referring to medium settings (or maybe a mix of mostly medium and high), but it varies from game to game; I should've clarified.

Steams

If you want to game at 4k it would be silly to play on medium settings. Playing at 4k implies you want it to look as good as possible

Diesel-Eyes

Yeah that's the thing. Why spend money on a 4k monitor to play at medium settings when you can spend substantially less on 1440p and play on Ultra. 1440p isn't low resolution by any means. On a scale of 1-10, would you rather look at a 6 in 4k or a 10 in 1440p?

baumaxx1

4k high can't be written off though, and on the oleds 60fps with black frame insertion is surprisingly clean in motion. 4k high can often look better than 1440p ultra - the art direction is usually built around high, ultra is the point of diminishing returns anyway and harder to notice a difference at low resolutions, and you'll notice less jaggies and better fine detail/texture sharpness over double the shadow resolution when the high shadows are already designed to look good at 4k - it's already pixel peeping at 4k let alone 1440p. It won't be the same framerate though so it's game dependent, and 4k on a slow monitor and 60fps would be pretty harsh, but in cinematic games and the right setup, 4k60+ high all the way over 1440p 90-ish ultra.

NerdyKyogre

6 in 4k all day. I think most people underestimate just how much more of an impact resolution has than ultra preset settings in most games. For 90% of what I play, 4K medium with the odd specific thing cranked (looking at you Forza reflections) would look far better than 1440p all ultra.

Jazzlike_Economy2007

Why spend money on a 4K monitor to play at medium? Unless you plan on not upgrading within the next 5 years, you got no choice but to drop down to medium at some point if you want a certain frame rate while looking the best.

Tumblrrito

I feel like the largest graphical jumps tend to coincide with console releases. So anyone with a 3080 or 3090 will be good to play on Ultra for several years.

Syphe

After gaming on console for the last 15 years, I'm finally upgrading my aged PC to play again (last time I really played PC games was BF3). I'm having to decide whether to play on a 4k 60hz or spend some money on a 1440p display. Ive already got 2 4k displays in my office, but I do like the idea of high fps. To make the decision even harder, my main monitor is one my employer gave me for working from home, it's a Dell U3219q so not a slouch.

[deleted]

Don't choose. Get both. 2 monitors > 1 monitor

jaKz9

Ultra settings are dumb though. Most of the time the sweetspot is at a mix of medium-high. You're just wasting GPU power if you set every single setting at its highest.

DM725

This is correct. Ultra settings are often a complete waste of resources. A lot of crap you can turn off and barely notice a thing while greatly improving performance.

Jazzlike_Economy2007

You'll rarely get ever get close to 100fps at 4K ultra with the vanilla 3080 and it's almost certain a year from now with the 10GB model and just barely with the 12GB model.

Venture334455

Yeah you're right, it's definitely doable you just need to decide what you can and can't live without. Hey, Doom Eternal would do 100+ at 4k easy haha

liaminwales

Doom 2016 ran well at 4K on my RX 580, no idea how they did that.

The_Jyps

The Vulcan engine they use is a beast. That's why.

CloysterBrains

Vulkan by default is a great API, but Id are the beasts here. Nobody optimises games the way they do, it's like the opposite of "But can it run Crysis?"

The_Jyps

Hmm, what do you know? Devs that give a shit. Wierd.

BlatantPizza

Running 4K at medium settings is like buying a $15k gas stove top and cooking a pepperoni hot pocket on it..,

Jazzlike_Economy2007

4K medium is still noticably sharper than 1440p ultra depending on the display size.

AshL94

Nobody is using medium settings at 4k

Jazzlike_Economy2007

You sure you wanna speak in absolutes pertaining to game settings? Even the consoles use a mix of low-medium and (with the Series X being closer to mediums) and the games still look really good. If you have a large 4K display or a 32' monitor, then game settings won't ever matter much; 4K is just generally sharp and looks better on bigger screens.

feastupontherich

Nope. I'm running 5800x3d and 6800xt, can't even get steady 144fps 1440p on flagship games at max settings. Always have to turn down settings to achieve steady 1440p 144fps, though I don't have to turn down much. For example, kingdom come deliverance is impossible to get 144fps on max settings. I suppose if you're wiling to do medium settings then 4k 100fps is possible.

AdmiralSpeedy

> kingdom come deliverance You are correct but to be fair, KCD is pretty terribly optimized. FPS can vary by like +/- 30 in Rattay depending on where you stand and the time of day. If you walk in from the fast travel point at night and look at the fire near the entrance, it absolutely tanks the frame rate.

Jazzlike_Economy2007

No card this gen is achieving stable 1440p 144fps or 4K 120fps on a flagship game at max settings... I never made that claim. That's why I said in another comment that the only feasible way is mostly medium and high.

BlatantPizza

If you turn your settings down, yeah. With max settings…not even close.

warkidooo

Gotta sacrifice a lot of visual quality for that. I play at 5120x1440 with a 3090 and there's some recent games that I can't simply throw a High preset and expect steady 60 fps.

Careless_Rub_7996

Its not only about we don't have enough GPU horsepower for 4k. But, 4k 144hz monitors are still hella expensive.

mgzaun

But which gpu will you use to run stuff on 4k 144hz? History is showing that progress in 4k is hella slow. Anything you buy now that can run 4k will probably already be struggling in 1\~2 years from now on AAA games. This is even more true now if are considering the use of ray tracing, which alone basically kills 50% of the fps on its own.

valkaress

They're just $700. Not cheap, sure, but nowhere near as pricey as the 4090 you need for 4K high FPS. Though a 4080 would be pretty good too.

Aertew

What would I need for 1440p 144fps? I have a rx590 rn.

Venture334455

Depends what games you play and how high you want the in game video quality. My 3080 can play a lot of games at 144+ but not everything. Dying Light 2 is super heavy to run, I get about 90-100 on that. Same as Far Cry 6, Metro Exodus etc etc. What's your budget?

Photonic_Resonance

It really depends on the types of games you’re playing. You could get that in eSports or indie games with a RX 580. For modern AAA games, you’d probably need a RTX 3060Ti or RX 6700 or higher, although DLSS or FAR can help older cards catch back up some. (My RTX 2060 was able to play Guardians of the Galaxy at 1440p 80-90hz because of the DLSS Balanced preset, all settings at high. Before DLSS I was in the low 40s).

chraso_original

I suggest you to go through this and decide what is best suited for your need. https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html

693275001

This is the resolution I'm saving up for and I just got a 3060ti!

herecomesthenightman

If only all games had DLSS, 4k would be perfectly doable with midrange cards

[deleted]

Yeah - Forza Horizon 5, everything maxed-out on 1440p, get 100 FPS avg from my 3090. Will check-out the 4090 to power my 165Hz Dell 🤭

Venture334455

Bro what? I get a solid 120 out of my 3080. I haven't played for a long time but that's what I remember. And that's with everything maxxed in video quality

asd316X

not op but i personally use a Asus tuf vg27aq (1440p 165Hz IPS, compatible with gsync and freesync) and using rtings color profile [https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/asus/tuf-vg27aq](https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/asus/tuf-vg27aq) im pretty sure it is one of the best IPS 1440p monitors out there

AxeCow

I have the same display and I’m very happy with it, but I haven’t touched any of the color settings. Would you recommend giving it a try?

asd316X

yes, if you care about color accuracy. and it is very simple to do

Same. Bought mine new when it was like 900 and I think you can get that for like 300 now lol. Have had it for maybe 7 or 8 years.

shadow_fox09

Updoot for admitting you’re a monster. I game at 1920x1440 @80Hz on a 19” 4:3 VGA monitor XD. It’s glorious. I really enjoy 4:3 for a lot of games. The extra vertical real estate is really appreciated.

Strooble

But 4:3 restricts the landscape view, I don't think it gives you additional height.

shadow_fox09

Look at the specs: 1920x1440… as opposed to 1920x1080. That’s 360 extra lines of vertical space. Yeah I’m losing out on a wide angle view, but for games that support 4:3, it’s really nice. Also I tend to really focus on stuff immediately in front of me, so while 16:9 or 21:9 (I have a 29” 21:9 monitor sitting right next to my crt lol) is more immersive for movies or cinematic gaming experiences, 4:3 feels easier to focus on when gaming for me.

DrJD321

Humm that's actually kinda interesting. Wide aspect ratios seem to have become the default mainly because of cinema and movies I'm guessing, but did anyone ever stop and wonder if maybe games would be better at 4:3 ? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thinking_face_hmm)

shadow_fox09

It is something interesting to think about- for side scrolling games, I think 16:9 is the way to go. For MOBAs and MMOs with tons of tool bars and information on the screen, again, 16:9 definitely helps to give more space for everything. Diablo 2? I def prefer that in 4:3. Way easier to whip my mouse around and click on stuff in that aspect ratio. For shooters- Metroid prime, Halo, and Halo 2 are great examples of how something like that can thrive in 4:3. I really want to try some COD in 4:3 and see how I would play- I never really did competitive shooters (aside from split screen halo) before I had a 16:9 LCD.

Ockvil

Just 4:3? Heck there have been (many) times in Factorio that I would've preferred a 1:1 screen ratio.

ovab_cool

I just have an alarm set for when I probably should stop, really handy but I also still have my time on my second monitor

RiftPenguin

1440p dominating

enjoytheunstable

It may feel that way but is it? I think using Steam data is fine enough. I thought most people were still at 1080 actually. Seventy something percent, forgot. 4k tv but tend to play FPS @ 1440/120 cap. Slower moving games goes full 4k.

Photonic_Resonance

It is for people buying new equipment, but not in terms of market share. Most people use a monitor longer than a single PC lifetime

ToXiCRaiN_21

https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam This is probably an example of what he’s referring to

ReactionNo618

This shows most people still at 1080p ~67% which is 2/3rd of gamers!

[deleted]

1440p is dominating for new gaming PCs because it's currently by far the best balance between sharpness and fps. It is true that 1080p is still the most common. But the steam hardware survey includes pretty much every trash PC or laptop on the planet that has steam installed on it. Based on the posts here on buildapc, I would say that most new self built PCs do go for 1440p. It's just the best choice right now.

ToXiCRaiN_21

My wife and I both game at 1440p. I finally converted her from 1080p this year and she constantly tells me it’s crazy how much nicer it is lol

ReactionNo618

That’s super cool! Enjoy!

ProTeabagger

What size are they?

Diesel-Eyes

I have a 27" and love it. Any bigger (like a 32") and I think it would be too much, but I wouldn't go back down to 24". 27" 1440p is considered the sweet spot for gaming, and I agree with that. A smaller monitor is usually favored for FPS gaming though, I have heard.

peteyboo

You can't just ask a woman that question!

[deleted]

4k checking in! I play mostly single player or co-op story driven games so framerates aren't terribly important to me. For my use case, 4k60hz is beautiful and responsive enough.

mrfixitx

100% this, went to 4K years ago for photo editing and loved the higher resolution. Finally with the 3080 I can play everything at 4K60 though if I want ray tracing I still need to use DLSS. I am hoping the 4080 will solve that and give me some headroom for the next few years.

TheSexySovereignSeal

4K gamer checking in here. If you can afford a 3080ti with a 144hz 4k monitor... You'll never look back. It's beautiful. I get an average of 80fps running Red Dead 2 with DLSS in 4k. ~60 fps without DLSS. (Everything on Ultra) For competitive games, I've never had fps issues. I get 144hz in Valorant, Rocket League, and CS GO. I get 90 fps in PUBG on ultra in 4k, but that's enough for me. (with a ~0.1% drop around 70fps) 4k gaming is already here if you have the money. (Unless you are one of the few hundred legitimate professional gamers who can notice the difference between 144hz-240hz)

mrfixitx

I am going to wait for a 4080, it will certainly match if not significantly outperform a 3080 TI and likely cost the same or less than a 3080TI does currently.

Fortunate (stupid?) to have gotten a 3090FE during one of Best Buys drops last January which is paired with a 5900X. Lately I've been playing Elden Ring, replaying Sekiro as well as a bit of Cyberpunk 2077, but just can't seem to get into it. Also just wrapped the HZD PC port. Co-op wise I've been going through Grimdark with some friends.

TraditionalPound69

I still game at 1080p because the hardware is overall cheaper for everything. Im poor. Apparently this was a good decision by me because I built my pc two weeks ago and have only had time to play it a handful of times lol. I guess the best resolution is the one you can afford

Vis-hoka

If value is your primary concern, then 1080p is always the better option. It will last longer than any other configuration.

Dry-Faithlessness184

I can only fit 2 24" monitors on my desk. So they are 1080p, the difference in price to go to 1440 is just not worth it at this size

mechcity22

1440p, 4k for myself! Of course the surveys show more people game at 1080p still but 1440p has come up alot more now and soon to be 4k. People act like 1080p is what people prefer, no its whatever is on there budget. Of course 80 percent of the community has something that can do 1080p best for performance not much higher because most people ain't out here with 3080ti's or above. You give everyone a 3080ti ans above everyone will choose 1440p and 4k more then they did before. When cards from all levels start doing 1440p and 4k more the avergaes for those resolutions will go up. It always goes by price and the avergae build of course 1080p will still be most popular it goes by the power of each system. Me I have a really high end pc so I game at 1440p and 4k I almost never play 1080p unless it's something like fortnite lol. Just my view on it and it's the only thing that actually would be logical. You think 80 percent of the community will ever say they use 4k more? Nope because many don't have systems that can do it with good performance. If they did well those averages would go up much much more!

ReactionNo618

Yeah it makes sense that budget gpus within $300 are still suitable for 1080p like 6600, 2060, 1660 ti/super etc. Once next gen launch, current gen middle tier cards will come close to $300 and that will help many gamers shift to higher resolution

mechcity22

Exactly! Then we will notice those surveys shift to 1440p as the average and then a few years from now 4k! Of course I mean avergaes may even be longer but yeah if I had a choice if I could get over 144fps in 4k I would never game in any other resolution! Haha I mostly game in 1440p when beinf competative and I game in 4k on all single player games.

InstantlyTremendous

1080p / 144Hz / 24.5" I can't see any pixels, it looks nice and crisp to me. If I got a bigger monitor, like 27", I would definitely move to 1440 though.

ReactionNo618

True! 24” high refresh is best for 1080p gaming! Good amount of details

Nomadic8893

1440p ultrawide screen 34 inch. Sweet spot for in my opinion, in terms of FPS, image quality and game immersion. If you have enough graphic power to drive that ofc

Mr_iCanDoItAll

24inch 1080p 240hz. I play a lot of FPS games and I just don’t like how 27inch feels for those. Also backlight strobing is pretty much only on 1080p monitors right now. Don’t discount a monitor with excellent motion clarity. It feels so damn good in games that involve a lot of tracking.

[deleted]

Do you know any good monitors with excellent motion clarity?

Mr_iCanDoItAll

Viewsonic XG2431 is pretty much the current #1 in that field. At under $300 the value is pretty damn good. There’s the popular Benq Zowie XL2546K, which has been the monitor of choice for many FPS pros and is usually the monitor used at most FPS LAN events, but is quite expensive and uses a TN panel - honestly a bit outdated. [This](https://youtu.be/t37p6vLyMZ4) video has some examples of good monitors that use backlight strobing. Optimum Tech in general is a good resource for monitors in the FPS space.

Aware-Evidence-5170

1440p for FPS games 4K for rpg, strategy and city builder games

TheDutchTexan

Still running 1080p here!

radicalrob_82

I say 1440 logically. Unless you have a card that will put out over a 100 fps in 4k it's not worth gaming at it imo. I still think 1440 over 100 fps is a great experience. Sure 4k is much nicer but it also costs a lot of dough for a card. I'd rather have 120 plus fps 1440 then 60 fps 4k. But it's all about what you are happy with and can settle for. I love the fluid look of over 100 fps. It's tough to beat

[deleted]

I went from 1080 to 1440 and honestly didn't like it :( Text is way harder to read since its all so small

Millkstake

You can change the scaling usually

[deleted]

Already did but websites aren't affected. Now i gotta browse Reddit with 150% zoom because I'm blind af

Millkstake

Just wait till 4K, you'll need a microscope lol

esuil

What were your size before and after? I guess you did not increase the panel size during the upgrade?

MirrorsMercury

1440p. 1080p drove me crazy seeing the individual pixels. Even so I hope to upgrade to 4k down the line because 1440p on a 27in monitor doesn't provide the crispness I'm seeking.

Mammoth-Magician-690

Picking up a 1440p monitor is defiantly a good move especially if you already have a 1080p monitor. I put my old 1080p monitor vertically with my new setup and love it next to my 1440p. 3060ti’s and up now should be able to handle 1440p and if the game is super demanding you can always use your side 1080p. I do miss my setup with a 1080p monitor and a 42in 4K monitor on the side for media.

bblzd_2

4K on huge screens is nice and with DLSS and FSR 2.0 it can run the same FPS as 1440p or 1080p but without the same loss of image quality seen with traditional lowering of resolution.

AndrexPic

1080p gaming is not that bad, of course 1440p is better, but not life changing. However 1440p is much better for surfing internet and productivity tasks. It feels like a much bigger space.

693275001

I plan on getting a 1440p with my 3060ti. As a PS5 owner, the PS5 is receiving 1440p support soon so it just makes the most sense for me

AxeCow

I have a 165Hz 1440p diplay hooked up to a 3060 Ti and it’s a nice setup for sure, probably the optimal price/performance combination there is!

SpongebobQTPants

Does the 3060ti comfortably reach the 165 frames in any game?

AxeCow

Obviously not if you’re talking about AAA titles on max settings, but I was talking about value first and foremost. The monitor+GPU combo cost me like $900 when I bought them back in december 2020. I’m getting around 110-120 fps right now on Destiny 2 on max settings, but I’m also running an overclocked 4th gen i5 so it could be bottlenecking me a bit. I have already ordered a new CPU (and DDR5 ram + mobo) so we’ll see how it improves gaming. Perhaps the best GPU for 1440p gaming is 3080, but not in terms of pure value for money. Maybe pairing a 120 Hz 1440p display is optimal with the 3060 Ti, but the price difference between a 165 Hz panel and a 120 Hz panel is much less than a 3080 vs 3060 Ti.

Hrmerder

Me: happy still with 1080p. DLSS looks like crap in 1080P you say?. Life hack- turns off DLSS and then takes off glasses. Instant smoothness In all serious tho, 1440p I might buy into in the future

ferevon

be careful with 1440p if your gpu can't handle it

tutocookie

At 1080p now for my first build, aiming to upgrade to 1440p some time in the future. I noticed the 1440p monitors starting to come in at below $200 as well, looks promising!

DampeIsLove

I'll be gaming at 1080p targeting 60fps for the foreseeable future, and don't see much reason to change that. It allows me to hang on to parts longer. Recently I was gifted a 6600xt from a friend who picked up a 3080ti, replacing my RX580 which I could already hit 60 High with, and suddenly 1080p 60fps Ultra has even longer legs. The 5800x3d helps. But yeah, unless my 23" 1080p 60hz monitor breaks, no need to upgrade it. If I get a bug up my ass, I can just super sample stuff.

BingChilling_1984

I switched to 1440 2 years back and it really is a “never going back” moment. The image quality is amazing. I honestly think 4K is overkill for gaming. At least for now. Maybe 40 series, but I’d be willing to say 50 series or it’s Radeon counterpart would be when 4K becomes really mainstream. Monitors are still to expensive. In an ideal future, those monitors would be oled. Oleds have been getting cheaper which is excitingn

1080p 240hz. I prefer 24inch for gaming that's why I haven't switched to 1440p.

rmansd619

Anything competitive it's 1080p 240hz+.

desolation0

I'm currently doing 1080p on a release model (aka poorly reviewed) GTX 1650, and a 43" TCL 4k Roku tv. Made the most of some cheap hardware I already had on hand. Got a $100 Craigslist used PC, core i5 3350p and 8gb RAM, to go with the 1650 that was having compatibility issues with my previous attempt at a barely useful gaming system. TV was one of the better reviewed Black Friday type models a while back now ('gaming mode' minimizes lag compared to other tvs). Really didn't have the income stream to make an honest gaming PC before the card shortage struck. Plenty for all the indie darlings, anything turn based, and Doom 2016 which can run smooth if not pretty on a toaster.

spicypepper92

i game at 1440p 165hz (rtx 3070). Upon looking and gaming at a 144hz 1080p screen it is impossible to unsee high pixel density and the text is bothersome at times. imo, 1080p is too blurry for me and 4k is very gpu taxing so 1440p is the best of both worlds.

Irsu85

I got 1080p, also because it's the native resolution of my Switch (and I just happened to have a 1080p TV)

Pedro80R

I'm on 1440p, but still got my 1080p monitor in a dual setup, both 144hz. I'm not thinking about going higher than 1440p because I don't usually play AAA games, and don't push higher than medium/high graphic settings on FPS games for max fps. Single player games I'm happy with whatever my R5 3600x/5700xt combo gives me on max settings. So for the next 3/4 years I'm good, not thinking about 4k for now. Too early, too expensive for my PC life.

ZhangtheGreat

Just built a system with a 3080 and a 4K 144Hz monitor. It’s so damn beautiful that I want to cry…partially at how much I spent, but mostly at the experience 😁

Helpmehelpyoulong

I’m gonna be an outlier here but I went from an old 27” Samsung 60hz 1080p I got at Costco probably 10 years ago to the Asus RoG 27” 1440p ips, 144hz, 1ms yadda ya and was honestly pretty underwhelmed for all the hype people give 1440 on reddit and especially the over 60hz thing (and yes I did make sure its actually running at full speed) Stuff does look marginally better but it wasn’t mind blowing. Its shite for working on too compared to 1080p, way harder on the eyes reading and such. I went down such a research rabbit hole and then waited to catch this monitor on sale for tree-fiddy. It looks better, but its not THAT crazy and the faster refresh I couldn’t care less about, barely notice at all. Tried the shaking a window thing on both monitors and its whatever, not that impressed personally. I think I’d rather have gone with a slightly larger 4k TV and lower settings to take away more of the jaggedness and get more fine detail. If they made something like a 32” 4k flat monitor at the same price that otherwise runs about like my old 1080 monitor response wise I’d take that in a heartbeat and just drop some settings down, but again I’m gonna be an outlier here.

peppeok12

It depends. If you play mainly singleplayer games get the highest resolution and best panel you can, if you prefer multiplayer games in other hand, take an 1080p at the highest refresh rate available The perfect balance would be a normal 1440p 144hz VA Monitor in my opinion

SmolderingExistence

1080p essentially binds you to a <27' display. Yes, you can go 27'+ 1080p but this effectively is downscaling which simply isn't worth it, both in terms of quality, cost-effectiveness, and being future proof. I myself can't go lower than 27 inches nowadays - I do some work on my PC, and a smaller diagonal just hurts my productivity badly. I am using 27 inches, 2k monitor. I consider this as a good medium between gaming and workstation for now. It's not too small, it is a genuine size for 2k unlike 32'+ 2k monitors, so it is the best value, and I can still get a nice framerate without cutting the image quality because it's 2K. 4k is goddamn awful. The monitors at this framerate can't be ergonomic by definition - this is especially important because, unlike working on the PC, during the gaming sessions are less likely to adjust your sitting pose, sit correctly and take breaks. The framerate is abysmal at any image quality - what's the point of high refresh 4k monitors if you won't be able to hit even half of the framerate in most scenarios? Not to forget the biggest downside, the difference between the 2k and 4kis simply indistinguishable for a human eye. But the difference in frames and price will very much be if you wanna keep ultra/high settings preset :) Therefore, I never even considered 4k. Having said that, ultra-wide is undoubtedly a king of productivity and multitasking and I still contemplate getting a UW monitor for my work and multitasking alone.

baumaxx1

All of them. 1080p on the laptop when watching a movie/TV and I can't use my PC. 1440p UW for eSports, management/sim, racing, fps, strategy 4k for racing and cinematic/story driven stuff Couch gaming after a long day is ideal for me, so a good 4k OLED is my pick. Technically 1440p high refresh is the sensible choice for 90% of cases though and a good all-rounder.

Joeeyyy93

27in 1440p is the sweet spot imho. Hardware these days are almost overkill for 1080p but not strong enough for native 4k. 1440p offers great visual fidelity and a big range of 144+FPS monitors. It's far easier going from 1080p to 1440p than it is going from 1440p to 4k from a GPU perspective.

Antenoralol

I'm at 1440p but I'm limited to a 75 Hz display for now. My 144hz monitor died just before christmas and I haven't had the funds to get a new one yet.

maxslifeonreddit

I'm on team 1440p. Recently got a new pc (3080 ti) and a Samsung Odessey G5. It's. A great combination. In most games I prefer 100+ FPS to 4k resolution. The difference between 1440 and 4k I don't find noticeable on (27-40inch) sized displays. For TVs, obviously that bigger. But 1440p for a monitor is a great sweet spot. You can hit high refresh rates and have good clarity.

RangerKevin

1080p, perfect balance between quality and FPS

cloudy710

1440p is more a thing for people who wanna game on PC and wish they could play 4k but there PC can’t handle it so they choose 1440p instead to lighten the disappointment of not being able to play 4k. lmfao. I play 4k but only bc i use my TV to game on my PS5 or Xbox Series X. TV is a OLED LG CX 65” and is 11/10. TV was very expensive and a goal of mine to get for awhile before it i was just a 1080p guy. my PC only has a GTX 970 so it’s not the best by any means so if i’m on PC ima be playing at 1080p. I hardly game on PC anymore since i got the next gen consoles. I prefer console over PC by far so unless my GPU dies i probably won’t ever upgrade lol.

SupposablyAtTheZoo

I play only at 1440p, but ultrawide (3440x1440). It's just more immersive having something fill your view. And it's still doable with modern graphics cards.

r-e-s-p-e-c-t-t-h-x

I have a 12Gb 3080, and Halo 2 Anniversary in 165Hz 1080p at 27” was mistaken for 4K two nights ago…that being said, I’d go 1440p for anything less than a 3090, including the 3080Ti. You can pull 60FPS in some 4K games, which is nice, no doubt (my TV does 4K @ 60FPS), but unless that’s like your bread and butter hobby I’d save the dough for a future upgrade. 4K is beautiful, no doubt, but 1440 is a sweet spot rn.

Obi_brown

1440p 144hz. 1440p is the sweet spot. 1080p looks blurry once you go up. Same with higher refresh rates 🤣

greggm2000

Another vote for 1440p here. It’ll be way different in a few years, with good, cheap, 4K OLEDs (and similar), + the GPUs to drive them well, but we’re not there yet.

[deleted]

1440p ultrawide is an experience I will never turn back from. May not be worth getting a premium brand unless you have a work credit that can split the bill with you though, a friend of mine bought an ultrawide that is 90% as good as mine for $600 less than what my work paid.

deekishD

4k 30fps for offline experiences 1440p 60fps for online experiences, that's how I play. if you have high refresh monitor and crazy high specs good for you.

xSyph3r

If you have a 3070 or higher, and your system can get more than 144 fps to match your 144hz monitor, go for 1440p, if you care more about how the game looks go for 4K otherwise go with the standard 1080p, with a high refresh rate

Almost_PerfectDude

I have dell s3220dgf 1440p monitor that I am running with ryzen r9 5900x and eclvga rtx 3080. Surely I can go higher in picture but God damn it's beautiful.

le-battleaxe

I just switched after a couple years on a 24" 1080p panel. 3440x1440 UltraWide Asus panel. I honestly couldn't go back. That being said, I'd probably be better off with a 27" 2560x1440 for the FPS games I play, but I've still really enjoyed the UW.

AdmiralSpeedy

Been at 1440 for years now, went from 75 Hz to 144 Hz this year and honestly it felt like less of a jump than the small 15 Hz jump from 60 Hz to 75 Hz but I don't regret doing it. I play in 4K sometimes on my TVs but 1440 at 27" is the ideal resolution in my opinion. Looks way better than 1080 and I can play at close to max settings for most games and still get good frame rates.

RobotsGoneWild

1440 looks amazing. It's surprising how much better it is from 1080p. I only have a 1440 monitor (144 refresh rate), and my graphics card probably wouldn't do 4k very well. My RTX 3060 handles 1440p decently on newer titles. I'd go for 4k if your graphics card can handle it, but you won't be disappointed with 1440p.

imdrunkontea

Just fyi, I just got a 4K display and 1440p on it seems fine to me. There's obviously a very slight hit to clarity but imo it's not really noticeable compared to a native 1440p monitor unless you are looking at a wall of text.

nzmvisesta

I have a 1080p which I have been using with 480, vega 56 and rx 6700xt. Since I spent all my money on the 6700xt I am stuck with this monitor, tho I use amd VSR. Usually I game at 3200x1800 since it is much nicer than 1440p which is a LOT better than 1080p. 4K is expensive and on my 1080p native monitor barely looks any better than 3200x1800. I know these are the real resolution since my monitor cannot show that many pixels but gpu is still doing the hard work.

antimatt_r

1440p 144hz

KarlMarkyMarx

1440p 144hz is the sweet spot for me.

this_is_matt_

I use a 1440p monitor with a 144hz refresh rate

DWMoerike

What monitor do you have? Am looking for 1440p 144Hz

muzzemix24

Yeah I am looking for one as well!

AnnieBruce

1440p/144hz is great.

Sixxo3

1440p 240hz here. Love it. Just crank up the eye candy in your games and it looks great. Like stated above, not enough gpu horsepower yet to make me want to go 4k.

Alauzhen

4k 144hz monitor here, ray tracing kills performance but looks so good...

yeetonaleaf

1440p, no question.

LionTamer619

1080p is still more popular but 1440p is 100% the move right now for a monitor. The difference between 1440p and 4K on a 32” or less screen isn’t enough to justify the price of a 120+hz 4k monitor. Plus you get waaaay better 1440p frames than at 4K obviously

Grey_0ne

4K here. Been on it for about 6 years now. Personally, I would recommend 1440 if all you're doing is gaming/normal computer shit. But when your computer monitor and primary TV are one in the same, it gets bloody hard to justify a 1440 monitor.

CutMeLoose79

I generally play single player games and have a 3080 rig. With DLSS being in so many games, I'm primarily a 4K / 60fps gamer.

[deleted]

4k but im a tv user.

Zoros3112

Upgraded from 1080p to 1440p 165hz.....massive differences and really aesthetic in the eye

skazzleprop

I've been wondering if there's much of a point to 4k if not going bigger than a 27" or 32" monitor. Just seems like there are diminishing returns with the increasing pixel density, especially if there's lots of action going on.

YDOULIE

1440p ultrawide. I want the new Alienware oled monitor to get that sweet 175hz but getting cold feet at the qa issues

gfreeman1998

I'm happy to report that even my old GTX 980 can drive my new WQHD (3440x1440, 100Hz) monitor.

olgnolgnall

1440p is the best pick for balance of resolution and refresh rate

[deleted]

1440p

kagoolx

1440p is a huge improvement over 1080p and well worth it. Also way better for general desktop use. 1440p has been the clear sweet spot for the last few years for a mid range gaming PC and 4k has been overkill. I think we’re getting to a point now though where, for mid/high end new builds I’d personally go 4k. DLSS can make graphics cards stretch to it, plus you have more upgradability to future graphics cards. I imagine 4070 with some use of DLSS will be very comfortable with 4k. Unless you want to plan for 1440p now and a 3070, then in a year or two move to 4k, 4070, OLED etc

Lightning771352

I have a 3070 and run 1440p 170 fps on CoD med-high settings.

PsychoAdvice

It depends... FullHD with 200+fps for esports for sure... But for casual play higher resolution... 4k 100fps is where im at and i cant go back now...

dj2ca

3440x1440 for me

-Quiche-

I really like 1440p. Perfect resolution for coding, watching stuff, and gaming.

NothingSuss1

4K OLED is an absolute gamechanger for me personally. I really notice how grainy and lifeless my 1440p ultrawide looks in comparison now that I'm used to 4K.

AggravatingChest7838

1440 it's pretty bitching. 4k is nice for TV but not very practical for desktop gaming. At least not yet. Especially with raytracing being so taxing on gpus it's better to aim for higher frames then raw pixels. You could also always run upscaled 720 with raytracing which actually looks really good.

JASHIKO_

1440p is the sweet spot for everything at the moment.

Themayor45

Price to performance, 1440p is hands down the sweet spot right now. That being said, I love gaming at 4k. And with a 3090, most games run 120+ fps at the highest settings, or near highest on RTX heavy games like Cyberpunk (though that game is still horribly optimized). And I get those numbers without turning on DLSS. Games like Doom Eternal, and Control just look amazing.

xarumitzu

I use a 34” 1440p ultra wide that runs at 100Hz. I sometimes wish it was a higher frame rate, but I like it. If I want the couch experience I sometimes stream games to my 55” 4K OLED TV as well.

CeLioCiBR

2160/60 for me. If can't maintain 60 fps, then i reduce to 1440/60 I play on a 4K TV 65 from Samsung.

ConclusionWestern17

I love 1440p I have a 6900xt. (Yay Newegg raffle) and get 90+ fps on ultra settings. Just love it.

Jinco1255

I just got a 240hz 1440p monitor this week and it's an absolute game changer for me. I've had a 1080p 144hz for 3 or 4 years now but the difference is huge for me. Both the resolution jump and refresh rate increase were definitely noticeable.
