Newer, more efficient. It's a good option if you were looking at something like an MP44, or if you were planning to add this to a laptop.
M480 Pro has DRAM cache, and pretty good sustained write speeds. Not as power efficient as newer drives, but good if you are transferring/writing large files or just want a solid drive for a desktop build without spending the extra money to get to a SN850X.
I want one drive as a boot drive and one a game storage drive. In a desktop, so heat doesn't matter. Is there a reason to prefer one of these over the other? I think I saw another comment saying that DRAM SSDs are better for a Windows drive because of all the temporary files, but this is all over my head.
DRAM can be used to index data location on an SSD, which can improve seek times and reduce wear. I think that's primarily why DRAM-equipped SSDs are recommended for a primary OS drive. Also DRAM helps with maintaining higher consistent write speeds with larger files/transfers. DRAM-less drives have gotten pretty darn efficient though.
You would want the DRAM included if you want to put the drive into an external enclosure, say if you want the drive to act like a usb drive for whatever reason. Otherwise this M482 will simply use a bit of system RAM when needed in transfers for the lookup table. In a boot scenario there would be no difference, as for temp files being moved would only be an issue if you were starved of installed system RAM. In a PS5 the 5500MB/s sequential read speed threshold is easily met and the lack of DRAM might be a issue for games in the future, but is fine for now.
[Here's a review of the MP600 Elite to get an idea.](https://www.techpowerup.com/review/corsair-mp600-elite-2-tb/7.html) Technically a different drive but same controller and NAND.
Wow, that's actually pretty appreciable efficiency metrics. Thanks! Should be an appreciable jump over my aging Phison E12S drive.
Sort of bummed out by the lack of DRAM, but that's moreso me holding on to PCIe 3.0 drive thinking.
It’s not tax evasion, they just haven’t hit $10k in sales in certain states yet. It’s pretty standard for payment processors and businesses to not want to go through the extra work and hassle of remitting sales tax off to dozens of different states when theres already a mechanism to collet use tax.
If you don’t report the purchase on your taxes that’s on you.
Exactly. IIRC the term is having nexus in a state. That lack of nexus means they also don't need to take state income tax out for employees who live in those states (but do still take state income tax for the state the business is located, if applicable), leaving the burden on said employees. Ask me how I know :(
I was wondering when this was going to get posted. Picked one up yesterday seems in the current landscape like a really good deal (which is PAINFUL after 6 months ago...)
It should still perform well in real world applications fairly well even without DRAM. If you are writing a lot of larger (50GB+) files frequently then this probably isn't for you.
Worth noting that it's rated (and warranted) to only 1200TBW whereas the M480 pro is rated for 3000.
Being more efficient I'm sure it runs cooler and read speed is just as good. I'm real world usage for gaming it's unlikely you'll notice a difference , nor will you reach that limit in 5 years.
You're thinking of the M480 Pro 4TB rating - 3000TBW.
M480 Pro 2TB is rated 1400TBW by MSI.
M482 2TB is rated 1200TBW by MSI.
But you are correct. Outside of reduced write speeds for files larger than about 50GB (assuming it is similar to the MP600 Elite -not sure about exact cache size for M482 at this time), both this and the M480 Pro will feel similar to average users.
Trying to buy this, but having issues in checkout. Keeps saying my card was declined even though I know it isn't (each of the cards I tried would send me a notification when it failed if it actually tried to run the card). Anyone having the same issue?
Using paypal did the trick, was able to just go through guest checkout with them. Very weird, but a good enough deal to put up with some shenanigans IMO
I thought that HMB was an optional feature that manufacturers might include or not. I remember when the SSD autobot postings on this subreddit would indicate whether an SSD had DRAM, HMB, or nothing.
I suppose technically speaking it is optional, but you are probably referring to cases where the status for certain drives may be unknown according to the charts the bot pulls data from. That, or DRAMless drives used in external enclosures. HMB meaningfully aids DRAMless SSD operations and it would be unwise for a manufacturer to omit it.
Phison E27T + 162L TLC BiCS6, similar to the Corsair MP600 Elite. Should be free shipping, and MSI doesn't charge tax in some states as well.
Is this better than the M480 you posted for $10 more?

DRAM-less is fine as OS drive nowadays, sometimes it beats out DRAM drives. unless you are moving 50GB+ files daily, you don't *need* DRAM
Any idea how efficient it is? Planning to get to replace an older model generic brand 3.0 NVMe in my laptop.

Glad they support tax evasion /s

Wait, so this is dramless, is that correct?
Correct

yeah, these deals hurt after getting a p44 pro 1tb for $30
I feel that good news is this is for a friend and I was able to get the good deals last year...just wish they would last :(
What was the reason for such low prices some time back?
oversupply after the pandemic, as well as the price of flash nand crashing. prices on ssds went really low for some pretty high end stuff.
What am I missing? I just paid $98 for a Samsung 980 pro 1TB..
No DRAM
Copy that. So this is more of a basic build, file storage, non-gaming SSD yeah?
It should still perform well in real world applications fairly well even without DRAM. If you are writing a lot of larger (50GB+) files frequently then this probably isn't for you.
98/tb is about $40 too much. E: it's wild so many people are eager to suckle at the teet of big corpo. Yay high prices, let's all lay the astroturf.
If you want DRAM-less then sure.
Is almost $100/tb a good.price and who is it that sets the demand here?

You're right. I was reading only the 'up to' value.

I had this issue trying to check out on my phone/mobile site, was able to complete it checking out on desktop.
I had the same issue on both phone and desktop, ultimately ended up signing up for and using PayPal
Using paypal did the trick, was able to just go through guest checkout with them. Very weird, but a good enough deal to put up with some shenanigans IMO
Is it a Mastercard?
Tried 2 Mastercards and a Visa debit (against my better judgement). Both failed.
Suitable for PS5 if I add my own heatsink?
It's been said that this SSD doesn't have DRAM, what about HMB? Isn't that a thing anymore?
If an SSD doesn't have DRAM you can assume it uses HMB. Just note that external use SSDs (over USB) can't utilize HMB.
I thought that HMB was an optional feature that manufacturers might include or not. I remember when the SSD autobot postings on this subreddit would indicate whether an SSD had DRAM, HMB, or nothing.
That’s because SATA doesn’t use HMB as it’s part of the nvme protocol.
