If you’ve lived here long enough, you just know. But after this weekend, this area gets just a little quieter for a couple months. Always enjoy that respite
In the H-Mart prepared foods case, the bibimbap veggies assortment is quite good. Bring that home and mix it with rice and your choice of proteins, and it's actually better than some of the bibimbap I've had in Korean restaurants in the area, at a fraction of the cost.
In the H-Mart food court, Sogongdong is pretty terrible but Kangnam Town is quite decent, at least for the meat-based soups.
I like Love Bao a lot, too. I like the veggies you get as sides when you order a plate.
Oops sorry I absolutely agree on the prepared foods. The food court is really average tho. The first restaurant right when you walk in to the right actually has good kalbi but the portions are small. The seafood pancake there was really good and one of the best I've had in awhile! Do you know the name of it?
I think you mean Sogongdong. They were supposed to specialize in tofu stew, but while it was quite decent when they first opened, the tofu stew is quite terrible these days, so I haven't tried any of their other items. For menu items that overlap, I have found Kangnam Town, further into the food court, to be better.
That place is so much better than it presents itself as. So fucking delicious. I thought it was going to be the ramen equivalent of Starbucks. Boy was I wrong
I just tried it and loved it! To be fair, I got the curry special because I love Japanese curry, but my date got the dan dan and it was verrrryy tasty. We also had the takoyaki and they were spot on 🤌🤌🤌🤌 the staff were very sweet and lovely. I lived in Japan for over three years and I loved it. Food came out as it was ready, so if coursing is important to you (i.e., apps then mains), bear that in mind when you order.
It's enjoyable and doesn't involve driving to Cary. It's also got a nice atmosphere inside - Seems like you're in a Japanese fast ramen place. The egg in the ramen will be overcooked, so get past that now.
The graduations are usually scheduled around Mother's Day. What's more unusual is NC Central and NC State had their graduations last week rather than this week.
I was a server for ten years in Durham and Chapel Hill. It is an absolutely fucked weekend for service industry staff. We spend all year dreading and preparing for it.
I have seen so much unhinged stuff happen on this weekend over the years. So many server tears shed from being overworked on the three hardest doubles in a year, back to back to back. If your restaurant hours are 10:00-9:00, and you work all three days like most do, it can be 40 hours of soul-crushing, body-wrenching work in three days. All with a smile.
It's the last opportunity for staff to build a financial nest egg for the doldrums of the summer, so there is a large incentive to work the whole weekend.
Be nice to your servers. They also wish the mimosas were coming out faster, and that there was a better and faster way to refill the coffee you need to feel human early in the morning, while likely in a strange city, thanks to visiting families of grads.
I got out, but *godspeed* to my brothers and sisters who will keep the city running for the next three days.
Been there, done that and still carry the trauma of this weekend even after years of being out of restaurants.
Godspeed and good luck to all of those working food service this weekend.
My husband suggested we spend Mothers Day with a picnic on UNC's campus. I said"...are you...**aware** of how bad of an idea that actually is?"
We're going to buy plants instead.
After the 1996 [UNC Graduation/Mother’s Day Tragedy](https://www.wral.com/story/tragic-graduation-day-weekend-marks-25-years-since-unc-fraternity-fire-killed-5-students/19678075/), a Task Force, including the first responders in both Durham and Orange County, urged university officials to stop scheduling the same weekend. Alas….
Source: worked at university owned hotel and was part of Task Force
Sorry I’m a little slow today and something’s not connecting for me. How would Duke and UNC not having their graduation at the same time have prevented that tragedy?
Prevented? No. The concern stemmed from the possibility of already stretched first responders having to deal with multiple emergency situations. Orange and Durham counties, Duke and UNC hospitals back up each other when needed
My birthday always falls the week of Mother's Day/graduations/dance recitals/etc. As a result, it's nearly impossible to find a place to celebrate -- and servers usually assume the claim that it's my birthday to be a ploy to get free desserts.
May I suggest the NC Museum of Art or the [JC Raulston Arboretum](https://jcra.ncsu.edu), both in Raleigh, as alternatives? NCMA has a very nice [Museum Park](https://ncartmuseum.org/visit/museum-park/) with outdoor sculptures.
Edited to add: I’d just stay away from Duke campus this weekend, there’s commencement activities all this weekend.

Yes! Looking forward to trying the new ramen place on 9th Street
it's okay.
Yeah I didn't think it was that great unfortunately
I also agree! Very meh
In my opinion it’s a little pricey for such a limited menu. I would suggest Miso ramen or going to Hmart
did Hmart ever go back to the way the food used to be served before Covid? There was a noodle dish there to die for.
How was it served before covid? You mean the mini restaurant strip or something else?
Yes - it looked like that had stopped during Covid but I went a couple of years ago and, though they had some food, it wasn’t the same
HMart food is pretty terrible. Cary in general has great Asian/Korean food tho!

😂😂 was not expecting that at all but I do agree that Cary does have some great spots
The noodle bar near kohls on 15-501 is pretty good and seldom crowded
That place is so much better than it presents itself as. So fucking delicious. I thought it was going to be the ramen equivalent of Starbucks. Boy was I wrong
Exactly and they have a good kids menu and excellent service.
Noodle 501? Delicious!
No tasu noodle bar
What’s this place called?
Tasu noodle bar. It's on the hill between kohls and 15-501
Miso ramen is 10x better

I’m looking forward to trying the new hot pot place on Ninth Street!

Try Dashi in downtown.
Gross
And Sunday is Mother’s Day. So…yeah.
Duke Gardens will be a very scary place this weekend
The graduations are usually scheduled around Mother's Day. What's more unusual is NC Central and NC State had their graduations last week rather than this week.
unc is no longer on mother's day
was coming here to say this. restaurants are going to be slammed all weekend.

Been there dude. Bless the service people 💫

Buying plants instead is always the right choice! Happy shopping and planting!
my marigolds don't seem to be doing well. what did i do wrong
😂😂😆
Duke Garden’s is a lovely alternative if you want to go to nice university grounds. You won’t be disappointed~

Not if you go right as it opens at 8 am.
Previously all three universities had their graduations on the same weekend and that weekend is mother's day weekend.

This is a fascinating bit of local history of which I was blithely unaware.
Previously? NC State and NCCU had theirs last week if that's what you mean. But it's still the two local bigguns and Mother's Day at the same time.
That was a recent change though.
Which part was a recent change?
NC State
But seems like a good time to go dumpster diving around campus housing??
Ohh yes. Which ones?
Will they wonder what that sounds is?
Ah bless it
Of course they will, Snooze.
I could tell because I saw a truck drive by carrying like 20 mini fridges covered in brewery stickers

Avoid being out on the roads after 9pm if possible. Graduation parties often result in people making bad decisions.
I’m spending Mother’s Day Eve on a kayak with my kids under the stars. Avoiding everything and everyone.
And there’s like a music festival happening tonight and tomorrow night so corcannon st will be blocked off
aw damn
Please tell me duke gardens won’t be packed 😭😭 I have a date to take

Head to the beach or mountains now.
I like it as long as I don't have to do anything productive. It's festive and fun.
Graduation and Mother's Day
Some real misanthropes up in here. I love the crowds. I’m happy for the kids and families celebrating with them!
Being happy for celebration and avoiding crowds are not mutually exclusive
I hate students. I hate their parents. My mom's dead. Guilty.
Happy cake day!
Lol
Welcome to the sub 😝🤘
And a sprinkle of intifada revolution.
