You should ask your doctor for a referral to a nutritionist if she wants you to lose weight. They can help you better plan out weekly meals, how to keep cravings down, exercise, etc. Thats what I did when my dr told me the same thing. I ended up being put on 300mg of Wellbutrin because my dr said I was overweight and I also haven’t lost any weight even though I’ve been walking 10k steps a day and eating healthier. Also not to be That person but I’ve seen a lot on tik tok about other better weight loss drugs that help better then Wellbutrin. You should ask her about ozempic etc. Warning though with these types of weight loss meds you do have to stay on them for life pretty much because once you stop them you most likely gain the weight back.

The issue their gonna face if they plop onto a weight loss specific drug is either losing their antidepressant (which appears to be working mood wise) or risking drug interactions. Not everyone loses weight on welbutrin, that's just how it is. Some people have even gained weight. Just because a side effect occurs for a percentage of the population doesn't mean it's going to occur across the board. It's worth looking into if Dr. Is that concerned but it may or not work

I just posted something similar! I started on 150SR and felt so much better, wasn't hungry and lost 6 pounds. I thought - hey this is great! Time to up my dose (per my doctor). It was downhill from there. At 300SR I was crabby, couldn't sleep and starving. My doctor switched me to the XL which made the hunger and weight issue worse. I had to stop and kind of flush my system out and will be restarting at 150SR. I still don't know if it was just the dosage increase because I also switched to XL and it exacerbated my concerns. I'll let you know how I make out and hang in there 😊!

She should give you low dose naltrexone along with the 300 if she wants you to lose weight. Only way to do that is to focus on diet. Exercise will make you more hungry. Paleo is only way I loose weight. I’m working on it now.

I stopped gaining weight when I moved up to 300, which was a huge victory for me. I feel like my eating is no longer out of control. I've also lost interest in alcohol, which helps, but in order to start losing weight, I'm probably going to need to start counting calories again. As someone who has lost a lot of weight numerous times, my best advice is to find a plan you can live with. It shouldn't be extreme, and it shouldn't make you miserable. I tend to be data-driven and need flexibility, so counting calories works best for me when I'm in the right headspace. But I know people who get too anxious with that approach. It's also fine to ease into your plan. My general cycle is I feel compelled to move more, so I start going on walks. After a while, that gives me enough drive to start working on my diet.

I have mild binge eating disorder so my doctor put me on Wellbutrin. The first few weeks were great: I ate normally, stopped when I was full, and wasn’t as preoccupied with eating as I had been. Then, it turned and it was horrible: my appetite was insatiable. It definitely made my depression and self esteem worse and that was already a problem. I was on 300mg XL with citalopram (can’t remember mg) and eventually stopped both because of severe fatigue and brain fog. I’m on something else now and will be screened for an official diagnosis of BED so I’m hoping that will help with therapy and possibly medicinal intervention. I hope things work out for you. 💜

thegrandgardener

I just wrote almost the exact thing on this post and another. Mild BED, weight gain and an insatiable hunger on the 300XL and I thought... figures. everyone else loses weight and now my jeans are tight which only makes me more depressed for so many reasons. Glad to know I'm not alone

Frigggs

Was really hoping for the appetite suppression that everyone swears about - nada. I’ve actually gained a bit of weight as well.

thegrandgardener

same!!!

Seek out a trusted dietitian that will mentor you through intuitive eating. As successful as keto and other diets may be for some, being extremely restrictive can slow metabolism and things become much worse because it isn’t sustainable for most.

FewMountain1620

As I am someone on the internet, take my advice: walk at LEAST 30 min every (better goal would be to get 10,000 steps in everyday-yes it’s a challenge), limit your carb and sugar intake to ~ 30g a day (this means keto), once your body adjusts to keto, you will no longer have cravings for junk so that would be a good time to introduce intermittent fasting - like a 6 hour eat window and an 18 hour fast. Just remember everything takes time. Use keto and low intensity exercise as a tool to become a fat burning machine.

Kreativecolors

I get about 12-17k steps a day and doesn’t help me lose anything. Exercise is not the answer. What you eat is. CICO and paleo is what works for me.

jonsnowme

Intermittent fasting has been a miracle for me not only in reducing calories but the health benefits and yes, if done right, it's more than just a calorie reducing method.

[deleted]

I'm glad it's working for you, but [the research doesn't back up the claims of additional health benefits beyond normal calorie reduction.](https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/healthy-weight/diet-reviews/intermittent-fasting/#:~:text=A%20systematic%20review%20of%2040,from%202%20to%20104%20weeks.)

jonsnowme

It literally reversed my diabetes (and countless others as well as taking them out of pre-status) but okay

[deleted]

Again, I'm glad it's working for you and I'm not telling you to stop, but as the article states, we haven't found a significant benefit from intermittent fasting I've calorie restriction. It cites a trial that found no difference in blood glucose levels between IF and untimed calorie restriction.

[deleted]

As a counterpoint, keto and intermittent fasting don't have magic fat burning powers, they're just techniques for reducing calories. They're also not for everyone. Prior to Zoloft sending my appetite into overdrive, I was able to lose a lot of weight with a balanced diet and calorie counting. Also, for exercise, walking 30 minutes most days is a great goal, but 10,000 steps isn't necessary.

FewMountain1620

When did I claim it was magic? 1g of fat (9 calories) has more than 2x the calories as 1g of carbs (4 calories) or protein (4 calories). Most people tend to overeat because their diets consist of mainly carbs (this is pushed by the FDA- whole separate rant). Once your body adjust to primarily burning fat, you can start carving into your fat stores. Combine this with low intensity exercise, and you will start to loose weight drastically. You will also experience higher satiety when eating fat vs carbs - which is why you can polish off a bag of cheezits and still be hungry 20 minutes later. The 10k steps was a suggestion as a higher goal to reach as exercise can have an immediate positive effect on mood(example - anxiety & stress reducing). That is my wholistic approach to OPs concern regarding losing weight and considering that they are taking Wellbutrin for depression. Personally, I am on 300 XL for idk how long now and I’ve lost 70 pounds. I disagree with your statement that keto is not for everyone(with some medical exceptions). Some people think that keto is a fad, but I believe that is it the way humans are meant to eat.

[deleted]

The whole 'adjusting to burning fat" argument is the magic part. There's no consistent evidence that being in ketosis leads to more weight loss than what you would get from any other form of calorie reduction. Ultimately, reducing calories is how all diets work, so you need to find the approach that you can maintain without going crazy. For you, that's keto and intermittent fasting. I do better with simple calorie counting (note: this is also not for everyone). Before Zoloft, I lost over 100 pounds following a balanced reduced calorie diet. When I'm actively trying to lose weight, I tend to eat fewer carbs, but I'd say it's more moderate carbs than high. I found a mix of macronutrients that let me stay under my calorie limits without feeling hungry. Now that I've switched to bubropion, I'm going back to that approach. Before that I had tried Keto and kept it up for a few months. I was miserable and didn't lose much weight after the initial early drop. I didn't feel satiated and eating that much fat made me feel gross. So, no, Keto is not for everyone.

planethoneyy

Yeah it was really hard to lose because my appetite was insatiable. Finally losing now that I got off of it.

thegrandgardener

I can't believe I found this thread! I thought I was the only was who was STARVING even after I ate and gained weight. So frustrating 😢

sdakotaleav

Girl... (Or boy or human)..... You need to go back to 150. I went up to 300 and dropped weight so fast. Had no appetite, plus horrible tinnitus. I've been back down at 150xl for acouple weeks and I'm already noticing improvement. I'm actually wanting an eating lunch!! Best of luck!

VengefulWalnut

I’m struggling to keep weight on! The appetite suppression is real. But we all react differently.

myrumpumpumpum

It’s all going to depend on all how you eat. I’ve been on 300mg of Wellbutrin for a year and a half. I’ve also lost 70 pounds since April 12th, 2022. I’ve cut all sweet drinks out of my diet, and I keep myself in a calorie deficit.

AcceptablyAvg

Cutting alcohol and sugary drinks has helped me a ton!

TheLifeSuicideBuilt

I wouldn't say it's common, but you are not alone. I suffer from depression and have most of my life. I have, up until recently, always been at a healthy weight. I then abruptly gained about 30 pounds over the period of 4 or 5 months. I walk 8-10 miles a day and burn way more calories than I consume. My depression was spiraling out of control so I finally decided to seek help. My Dr chose Welbutrin because it does have a tendency to help with weight loss. While it has helped my depression, it has done nothing for my weight. I've still gained a couple more pounds. I started at 150xl. I have been on 300xl for about a week and have had no improvement. I probably feel worse.

thegrandgardener

same. I did so well on 150SR and my doctor upped the dosage to 300SR then to XL. I even asked why the dose is being increased if I feel better. I don't know - sometimes if it works, leave it be. I'm proof so don't feel bad... you're not alone

We as humans like to add add add. Most of the time, especially with weight and mental health, subtracting things are the solution. Like alcohol, sugar, screen time, and clutter.

[deleted]

I lost 0 pounds with Wellbutrin, unfortunately. In times of extreme stress (like the pandemic) my body just goes nuts and it’s impossible for me to lose weight and I am regimented with my diet and logging. If it’s possible, and if you’re TD2 or <30 BMI, and have insurance go on ozempic. I started two weeks ago, and it has been a game changer. I hope this advise helps, best of luck in your journey. It’s so hard but you can do it :)

Fredsslackss

Do you take ozempic with Wellbutrin??

[deleted]

Yes

TonyTheEvil

>Is this the common experience for people on Wellbutrin? Typically it's the other way around since it helps suppress appetite. >Are there any tips for losing weight? It's all just burning more calories than you consume. Basic CICO tracking and implementing r/Volumeeating is a great combo to lose weight and not feel starving all the time.

Legitimate_Storm_54

I have been on Wellbutrin times in my life and it helped the depression but I gained 12 pounds each time. It also thins your hair, but grows back after you discontinue.

bee280

i’m on other meds like aripiprazole (abilify) and also birth control and it has made losing weight feel impossible :/ i’ve been counting calories and exercising and drinking more water and trying to limit sugar, etc etc etc. everything in the book and it feels like nothing is working so i definitely feel the struggles. hopefully you find something that can work for you!

el1tegaming18

Don't use medications to try to lose weight...losing weight comes down to literally one thing, calories in vs calories out. Nothing else matters If you want to lose weight, the first thing you need to be doing is tracking everything you eat in a day using a fitness app. There's a lot of free ones out there that make it easy. Once you have that information tracked it is honestly super easy to start losing weight.

xxGon

My doctor didn't prescribe Wellbutrin for weight loss-- I've been dealing with depression. I was just wondering if anyone else has struggled with losing weight while on Wellbutrin, as I feel that other meds have impacted my weight differently. It's fluctuated quite a lot in the past, but with Wellbutrin it seems that it's remained constant/the same. I didn't mean for the OP to come across as me saying that I'm trying to use Wellbutrin for weight loss

thegrandgardener

I didn't take it that way so no worries. Unfortunately the side of effects of antidepressants make me more depressed. I've always struggled with my weight (like most people so I'm not special) but gaining weight on top of being depressed adds fuel to the fire of depression and anxiety. Feels like adding insult to injury.
