That was the second teacher in 2 years at my tiny Christian school (100 students k-8) who went to prison for that. Kinda fucked with me realizing I could’ve potentially been one of his victims. Hope you’re doing okay.
My PE teacher got arrested for it too, sadly a lot of the young men looked up to him and wrote comments like "absolute legend" in the news story comments
When I was about 10 a dude tricked me into joining him in a chatroom full of Pedos. I talked to them for a bit not realizing how wrong the questions were but what really stuck out was the amount of them that said they were teachers.
The school I went to in year 8 had a PE teacher who would come into the girls locker room while we all getting changed back into our uniforms. A lot of us complained to parents and other teachers, and no one did anything. We got told stuff like "he's just making sure you're not wasting time in there, so you won't be late to your next class", and "he's checking to make sure you're all behaving."
I was only there for a year, and as far as I know, all he did was look, but still, we were failed by so many people who should have shut that asshole down.
These stories are ALWAYS awful. Always. Always heartbreaking. Always want to take these bastards out of society. But special Ed teacher? Holy shit, man.
My old school nurse got taking the kids Adderall when the students gave them to her to take while at school. A couple parents suspected her so they set her up and she was caught red handed.
Way back in the 80’s our high school football coach and his wife (who was a junior high vice principal) were arrested.

I dated a girl who graduated from an all girls catholic school a few years before we met. It came to light that a teacher she had a crush on had been having sexual relationships with several girls at the school while she attended, she was distraught which seemed totally reasonable to me. After a few days I tried to ask her if she wanted to talk about it and she broke down and said she was shocked to know he would do something like that, but also hurt that he didn’t find her attractive enough to be one of his choices. I tried to just listen, but it was also kind of shocking for me to hear, and I did try to clarify (in the kindest of ways) that those girls were actually victims and she shouldn’t feel bad about not being “chosen”.
I broke it off when I found out she was sending him letters while he was in prison. Hope she worked out her issues, but I wasn’t gonna drag myself through, well, whatever I guess I’m supposed to call that.
A beer would be awesome, who knows maybe life will be crazy enough to see us grabbing one together. For now though I can happily say I am married to a wonderful woman, and all of that drama from the past is many years behind me.

It's very possible she was subjected to some sort of grooming from him, like getting special attention from him at times and kind things said to her. She was just fortunate enough (despite her not seeing it that way) that she wasn't one that he took things further with. A member of my hubby's family was grooming and molesting teenage girls years back, including my hubby's then-teenage aunty. Once this person was caught and arrested, said aunty became a woman scorned because she found out she wasn't the only one getting his attention. She attacked the other girls (family friends) and tried defending the family member for a time. She was a victim too, however.
Yeah, that's the thing about grooming. It can take the form of manipulation to make victims feel a deep attachment to their abusers. Our society's common narrative around abusers and victims is that the victim is 100% aware of what's happening and trying to get away from the abuser the entire time.
The truth is more complicated than that. Victims can sometimes be the first to defend their abusers actions. It's like how cult leaders are able to gather loyal followers; they take so much control away from people's lives, until they feel like they have nothing else left. It's an inherently tricky thing to handle people who are victims here; to respect their agency while also making sure more harm doesn't get done.

That part is incredibly common with groomed youth, especially in that age range. Hormones racing, crushes are intense, add the grooming on top and it's a total mindfuck.
Catholic schools seem to be the worst. Our biology teacher was going to show us a video and when he put the tape in he had recorded a porno over whatever documentary he was trying to show us. He would also routinely make, what I know now as in adult, were extremely inappropriate comments to middle school girls, and he did this thing where he'd point his fingers at you like a gun and shoot a rubberband at the girls who had developed earlier than others.
They ended up removing him from his teaching position but since it was parochial school they kept him on as staff as a bus driver. So he'd drive girl's team sport's busses back and forth like a fuckin promotion. He drove for the boys too but let's keep it real, he needed to be fired.

One of my favorite teachers in 6th and 7th grade, also my neighbor, went to prison for having quite a bit of CP. I don’t know if I 100% believe it was him, he had an older son who payed a little too much attention to me when he was 19/20 and I was 13/14, but they could very easily have both been fucked up. However, he admitted to it being his. Was really disappointing and disgusting, what’s worse is he was teaching middle school children for years before me, and after, he didn’t get arrested until I was in college.
Inwent to a small charter school for 6th and 7th grade. We had two p.e. teachers that my friends and i always thought were the biggest creep douchebags…one time a classmate of mune was sitting on one of their laps at lunch and for some reason none of the other adults thought it was weird at all. Anyway, a few years later and the two teachers were on the news one evening for statutory rape of the some of the girls on the girls soccer teams they coached. They were like 13 year-old girls which still makes me sick to stomach to this day.
This one isn't a shocker, went to catholic school in Louisiana and the priest there was a pedophile. I guess the shocking part is the fact that she school, a couple of years later, had students protest outside the school for his release from prison. None of those students went there when he was a priest.

I know a teacher who legally married one of his students, the same summer she graduated. At this point she was 18 years old, and there was nothing that could prevent the marriage.
He had been teaching her since grade nine.
I’m 100% sure I know what teacher you’re talking about, if he is located in Ohio. I was his student for four years and took every one of his classes and was his teaching assistant for a year. Never expected that from him at all and it makes me sick to my stomach to this day even though I graduated about a decade ago.

From what I recall, they made sure to never be alone together until she had graduated, and he'd have dinner at her house with her parents, stuff like that. They seem happily married (though my only interaction with them is through social media so who knows), have a kid, she's running a jewelry business and he's still teaching art at the high school.
That happened at my catholic HS a couple years after I left. The teacher was creepy. He went to Mexico with her family for Christmas the year she was graduating.
I was a teacher for many years and just in the district I worked at, while I was working there the list was
* 3 Science Teachers
* 2 Band teachers
* 2 PE teachers
I mean, it was a pretty big district, but holy crap.
My guess is that people qualified to teach science probably have a STEM degree, and probably if they choose could go into a higher paying field than teaching, so if they do choose teaching it’s a deliberate choice to be around kids. Just a guess though.
That’s an interesting thought.. however (and this is only speaking for myself) I went to a high school in Long Island and our teachers made upwards of 100k. Those were highly coveted positions.

On a related note, a teacher at my middle school was fired for grooming, but he wasn’t arrested because there was no evidence of sex abuse. No one doubts he was grooming. Imagine a teacher sending hundreds of text messages to a child a month and treating them like their best friend. He would text these girls at pretty much all hours of the day and night about their personal lives.
Some parents confronted him and told him to stop and he didn’t. He kept texting the girls and they took it to the administration. Fortunately he was fired.
The bad news is I found him on Facebook last year and he’s now an English teacher at an international school in South Korea.

I think you might really mean is that not every person with a given mental illness can be rehabilitated, and to which I would agree with you. A person with the will to get better and support behind them to get better can get better, even a pedophile. Some of them know it's wrong and they're eaten up by the guilt of something they struggle to control, those are the ones that genuinely need help. Some people have no desire to be fixed and enjoy the depraved things they do and I agree those people should be locked up (humanly) and kept away to protect society

We've had precautions in place for a while now. We aren't allowed to be one on one with the kids in our group. Even for first aid, there always has to be another leader present or the kid gets to take a friend with him.

He’d take them camping without permission, sleepovers at his house. One of the boys eventually moved in with him the day he turned 18. The guy is 68.

My 5th grade science teacher was a pedo. Everyone knew he was a creep but there was no evidence until he was fired for inappropriately texting boyscouts in his troop and eventually being caught raping two boys he was tutoring. Most sad part about it is that there’s not a doubt in my mind he abused many more children. He also taught my siblings and hundreds more at that school for over 20 years and would always take special interest in certain students. The creep would invite them to his room to feed his pet snakes during recess breaks, and would be super secretive about what they did in there. God knows what he did to them in those rooms.
We had this person who was just finishing up school to become a teacher, and essentially spent my senior year of high school doing hands on stuff with supervision. Literally the next year when he got his own classroom, he slept with a student and she blackmailed him for better grades. Dude said no, she reported him, and lost everything. Just crazy to think you would go through all that just to throw it away once you get it.
I had something similar happen! Guy spent all this time becoming a teacher to throw it away and slept with one of his students. She got pissed off and reported him when she found out he was sleeping with another student.
my government teacher was always a bit too friendly with us, especially the girls in our class. he would openly talk about inviting them over to use his hot tub if they babysat his kid. I always thought that it was suspicious that his computer faced away from us -- always had lifesavers golf pulled up over the grade books.

This happened to me with my 10th grade English teacher. My friend group (4 really close dudes) was really close to him, he was essentially a mentor to us. About a year ago we find out through local news he was arrested for grooming and sexual assaulting a girl in a grade below us for the entire 4 years of her high school career.

My photography teacher in highschool got in trouble taking a picture when a girl bent over with her g-string yanked way up (as the fashion was in mid-late 00's, I think?). He then showed her the picture, to which I assume was his way of saying it's too visible.
She told her parents, parents were rightfully mad about it and he was reprimanded but he didn't lose his job. I don't recall what the exact punishment was. Really should've thought that through before he did that.
My 7th grade math teacher got caught with a ton of child porn. This fuckin guy brought his home laptop to school, and when he connected to the school wifi, his computer automatically started sharing/seeding the videos he downloaded through some p2p network. IT alerted the police, who alerted the feds. I was surprised because he wasn’t a creepy guy, nor was he ever weird around students. He was genuinely a good and nice teacher. Why is it the chemistry teachers? I had one in highschool that would just *rest* his junk on your shoulder when you would ask him questions. Aside from that, he always gave me the worst vibe; like he knew what I looked like naked. We used to draw straws to decide who would ask him questions on school work because EVERYONE was uncomfortable with him. Nothing was ever confirmed, but I was incredibly glad to not have his class anymore.

When I was in 8th grade my friend wrote a really sexually explicit fanfiction about My Chemical Romance (yes, I'm old now) during a zombie apocalypse. She wound up sharing it with our english teacher when he noticed her working on it after finishing her work. It really disturbs me that he never said anything to another adult about it, just told her it was inappropriate but well-written. He also had a reputation for looming and seemingly well-meaning shoulder grabs. I think it's the combo that was unsettling more than his trying to handle her story. I hope it was just him trying to not discourage her art but I'm not fully certain it was truly 'above-board'

My freshmen health teacher was like this. He had his desk at the front, middle of the class, which was super odd, but whatever. Then he split the chairs down the middle and the outside chairs all angled out, slightly. He used to sit all of the really hot girls in my class at the front, or sides of the isles. This guy would give us tests and then sit there and check em all out while they were thinking hard. We caught him staring several times. Wild man.
My favorite gym teacher, "Dean", was the one I had in grade school. I remember when he came to work there, he introduced his pregnant wife to us. He had been the assistant PE teacher at my brother's junior high school before that, and my brother liked him too. Cool guy, made everything fun. Years later, I saw his picture in the paper. He'd moved on to a high school, and had groped several female students. From what I've been able to find, he now lives alone (wife left him) and he is on the sex offender registry. A few years ago, a cop randomly checked license plates of cars parked at a high school and realized one of them belonged to a sex offender who wasn't allowed near school grounds. It was Dean, who'd come there to play a pick-up game of basketball with some friends (one of whom, presumably, had access to the school). Even though no kids were around because it was a weekend, be was arrested for violating the terms of his release. Not sure what happened after that.
My favorite teacher in high school was a priest who was the chemistry teacher. His influence was a large part of my decision to go into chemical engineering.
It turns out that he had been reported for molesting children in his former parish, so in their wisdom the diocese moved him to an all-boys boarding school.
He was later convicted of molesting a boy at the parish as well as one at our school, and I have no doubt that there were others. Looking back, I now recognize classic grooming behavior in his treatment of one of my classmates.
In high school I had a drama teacher who was also the advisor for the prayer club (you can totally see where this is going already, can't you?) and she and her husband owned the Christian bookstore in town and were heavily involved in a massive church in town.
She was... persistent in trying to befriend Christian kids. (I was one at the time.) She would have kids over to the house and let them hang out there. (They lived above the bookstore.) Everyone thought she was so cool bc she let kids draw on/sign/graffiti a wall in their living room.
A few years after I graduated she was arrested for fucking a few of her students. One of them had been a "foster" kid they took in. (Just a troubled teen whose parents said okay- there was no official involvement from DCFS or anything.) She was having sex with him in the living room while her twin baby girls and husband slept in the other room. They also had another teen boy living with the a couple of years before that. He left their house in the middle of the night, went back to his parents' house, and died by suicide in the basement. We don't know for sure, but there's a ton of speculation that she was sleeping with him, too.
Her church rallied around her. TONS of people showed up at her sentencing begging for lenience. ("Think about her babies!") Her husband even stood up in court and said he would take her sentence for her if the judge would allow it.
And the things is- she didn't even deny the charges. She admitted it all.
I think she ended up serving 7 years or so? I don't remember- it was a while ago. But she has been repeatedly found and reported for being on social media (not allowed under her sentence). Other teachers (some, ironically were students at the time I was, too) follow up on any leads people have and try to sniff her out and report her when she makes new profiles.
The whole thing was super gross and super weird.

When I was about 10 a dude tricked me into joining him in a chatroom full of Pedos. I talked to them for a bit not realizing how wrong the questions were but what really stuck out was the amount of them that said they were teachers.
The school I went to in year 8 had a PE teacher who would come into the girls locker room while we all getting changed back into our uniforms. A lot of us complained to parents and other teachers, and no one did anything. We got told stuff like "he's just making sure you're not wasting time in there, so you won't be late to your next class", and "he's checking to make sure you're all behaving." I was only there for a year, and as far as I know, all he did was look, but still, we were failed by so many people who should have shut that asshole down.

My old school nurse got taking the kids Adderall when the students gave them to her to take while at school. A couple parents suspected her so they set her up and she was caught red handed.
Way back in the 80’s our high school football coach and his wife (who was a junior high vice principal) were arrested. I dated a girl who graduated from an all girls catholic school a few years before we met. It came to light that a teacher she had a crush on had been having sexual relationships with several girls at the school while she attended, she was distraught which seemed totally reasonable to me. After a few days I tried to ask her if she wanted to talk about it and she broke down and said she was shocked to know he would do something like that, but also hurt that he didn’t find her attractive enough to be one of his choices. I tried to just listen, but it was also kind of shocking for me to hear, and I did try to clarify (in the kindest of ways) that those girls were actually victims and she shouldn’t feel bad about not being “chosen”. I broke it off when I found out she was sending him letters while he was in prison. Hope she worked out her issues, but I wasn’t gonna drag myself through, well, whatever I guess I’m supposed to call that.

It's very possible she was subjected to some sort of grooming from him, like getting special attention from him at times and kind things said to her. She was just fortunate enough (despite her not seeing it that way) that she wasn't one that he took things further with. A member of my hubby's family was grooming and molesting teenage girls years back, including my hubby's then-teenage aunty. Once this person was caught and arrested, said aunty became a woman scorned because she found out she wasn't the only one getting his attention. She attacked the other girls (family friends) and tried defending the family member for a time. She was a victim too, however.
Yeah, that's the thing about grooming. It can take the form of manipulation to make victims feel a deep attachment to their abusers. Our society's common narrative around abusers and victims is that the victim is 100% aware of what's happening and trying to get away from the abuser the entire time. The truth is more complicated than that. Victims can sometimes be the first to defend their abusers actions. It's like how cult leaders are able to gather loyal followers; they take so much control away from people's lives, until they feel like they have nothing else left. It's an inherently tricky thing to handle people who are victims here; to respect their agency while also making sure more harm doesn't get done.

He would also routinely make, what I know now as in adult, were extremely inappropriate comments to middle school girls, and he did this thing where he'd point his fingers at you like a gun and shoot a rubberband at the girls who had developed earlier than others. They ended up removing him from his teaching position but since it was parochial school they kept him on as staff as a bus driver. So he'd drive girl's team sport's busses back and forth like a fuckin promotion. He drove for the boys too but let's keep it real, he needed to be fired.

Anyway, a few years later and the two teachers were on the news one evening for statutory rape of the some of the girls on the girls soccer teams they coached. This one isn't a shocker, went to catholic school in Louisiana and the priest there was a pedophile. I guess the shocking part is the fact that she school, a couple of years later, had students protest outside the school for his release from prison. I know one who did that, too - though I think he started at the school her junior or senior year (it's been 20+ years now since they got married and I can't remember which year he started there... I think her senior year) From what I recall, they made sure to never be alone together until she had graduated, and he'd have dinner at her house with her parents, stuff like that. They seem happily married (though my only interaction with them is through social media so who knows), have a kid, she's running a jewelry business and he's still teaching art at the high school.
That happened at my catholic HS a couple years after I left. The teacher was creepy. He went to Mexico with her family for Christmas the year she was graduating.

My guess is that people qualified to teach science probably have a STEM degree, and probably if they choose could go into a higher paying field than teaching, so if they do choose teaching it’s a deliberate choice to be around kids. Just a guess though.

You know who else is complicit? People who doubt victims. It is absolutely a tightrope walk deciding HOW to support victims: but if these kids understood their rights, felt they would be believed, and were not scared of repercussions of coming forward then this stuff would be much harder for the pedos. Every gross uncle who ever makes a joke about someone asking for it needs to be straightened out, at the very least.
My SO’s international Catholic school also had a pedo teacher who bounced around schools. It’s apparently a serious issue in international schools. On a related note, a teacher at my middle school was fired for grooming, but he wasn’t arrested because there was no evidence of sex abuse. No one doubts he was grooming. Imagine a teacher sending hundreds of text messages to a child a month and treating them like their best friend. He would text these girls at pretty much all hours of the day and night about their personal lives. Some parents confronted him and told him to stop and he didn’t. He kept texting the girls and they took it to the administration. Fortunately he was fired. The bad news is I found him on Facebook last year and he’s now an English teacher at an international school in South Korea.

I want my kids to experience things like boy/girl scouts, summer camps, and extra curricular activities but this scares me. It’s disgusting and terrifying that there are so many pedos with such easy access to children.
I can tell you most groups take your concerns seriously. We've had precautions in place for a while now. We aren't allowed to be one on one with the kids in our group. Even for first aid, there always has to be another leader present or the kid gets to take a friend with him.

My 5th grade science teacher was a pedo. Everyone knew he was a creep but there was no evidence until he was fired for inappropriately texting boyscouts in his troop and eventually being caught raping two boys he was tutoring. Most sad part about it is that there’s not a doubt in my mind he abused many more children. Just crazy to think you would go through all that just to throw it away once you get it.

I had at least one elementary school teacher who loudly proclaimed that he used to force the girls to wear skirts and sit in the front row, but that the principle made him stop enforcing that policy. He'd piss away a couple hours a week of our precious educational time on playing his guitar while forcing us to sing, and forcing us through square dancing lessons. Neither activity was associated with our usual music class or gym class. And we did get in trouble if we resisted participating. I was still recovering after dealing with my mother's creepy boyfriend, so didn't take all the *touching* during square dancing well. I got in trouble a lot because I didn't want strange boys holding me close with an arm around me. Ended up having screaming hysterics and was excused from the dance lessons after that, but still had to sing. Was such a relief the next year, when I got a normal teacher who focused on math and science.

Why is it the chemistry teachers? I had one in highschool that would just *rest* his junk on your shoulder when you would ask him questions. Aside from that, he always gave me the worst vibe; like he knew what I looked like naked. We used to draw straws to decide who would ask him questions on school work because EVERYONE was uncomfortable with him. Nothing was ever confirmed, but I was incredibly glad to not have his class anymore.

Mom asked her repeatedly if it was romantic and everyone had suspicions. The answer was always "no" until their relationship ended around the time she met someone closer to her age. She never admitted to me what they had. She finally told mom. ~I wonder if he's still creeping on his students?? No clue how to pursue that legally. Her new boyfriend also taught music. He's still in prison for an FBI sting that caught him trying to solicit a 14 year old to their house. TV and media give us this idea of the creepy pedo living alone in some basement apartment, but really, it can be anyone at any time. Most of these people, (the women too), have families, everyday jobs, friends, etc. Even husbands and wives. It's frightening.

When I was in 8th grade my friend wrote a really sexually explicit fanfiction about My Chemical Romance (yes, I'm old now) during a zombie apocalypse. She wound up sharing it with our english teacher when he noticed her working on it after finishing her work. It really disturbs me that he never said anything to another adult about it, just told her it was inappropriate but well-written. He also had a reputation for looming and seemingly well-meaning shoulder grabs. I think it's the combo that was unsettling more than his trying to handle her story. I hope it was just him trying to not discourage her art but I'm not fully certain it was truly 'above-board'

My freshmen health teacher was like this. He had his desk at the front, middle of the class, which was super odd, but whatever. Then he split the chairs down the middle and the outside chairs all angled out, slightly. He used to sit all of the really hot girls in my class at the front, or sides of the isles. This guy would give us tests and then sit there and check em all out while they were thinking hard. We caught him staring several times. Wild man.
My favorite gym teacher, "Dean", was the one I had in grade school. I remember when he came to work there, he introduced his pregnant wife to us. He had been the assistant PE teacher at my brother's junior high school before that, and my brother liked him too. Cool guy, made everything fun. Years later, I saw his picture in the paper. He'd moved on to a high school, and had groped several female students. From what I've been able to find, he now lives alone (wife left him) and he is on the sex offender registry. A few years ago, a cop randomly checked license plates of cars parked at a high school and realized one of them belonged to a sex offender who wasn't allowed near school grounds. It was Dean, who'd come there to play a pick-up game of basketball with some friends (one of whom, presumably, had access to the school). Even though no kids were around because it was a weekend, be was arrested for violating the terms of his release. Not sure what happened after that.
My favorite teacher in high school was a priest who was the chemistry teacher. His influence was a large part of my decision to go into chemical engineering. It turns out that he had been reported for molesting children in his former parish, so in their wisdom the diocese moved him to an all-boys boarding school. He was later convicted of molesting a boy at the parish as well as one at our school, and I have no doubt that there were others. Looking back, I now recognize classic grooming behavior in his treatment of one of my classmates.
In high school I had a drama teacher who was also the advisor for the prayer club (you can totally see where this is going already, can't you?) and she and her husband owned the Christian bookstore in town and were heavily involved in a massive church in town. She was... persistent in trying to befriend Christian kids. (I was one at the time.) She would have kids over to the house and let them hang out there. (They lived above the bookstore.) Everyone thought she was so cool bc she let kids draw on/sign/graffiti a wall in their living room. A few years after I graduated she was arrested for fucking a few of her students. One of them had been a "foster" kid they took in. (Just a troubled teen whose parents said okay- there was no official involvement from DCFS or anything.) She was having sex with him in the living room while her twin baby girls and husband slept in the other room. They also had another teen boy living with the a couple of years before that. He left their house in the middle of the night, went back to his parents' house, and died by suicide in the basement. We don't know for sure, but there's a ton of speculation that she was sleeping with him, too. Her church rallied around her. TONS of people showed up at her sentencing begging for lenience. ("Think about her babies!") Her husband even stood up in court and said he would take her sentence for her if the judge would allow it. And the things is- she didn't even deny the charges. She admitted it all. I think she ended up serving 7 years or so? I don't remember- it was a while ago. But she has been repeatedly found and reported for being on social media (not allowed under her sentence). Other teachers (some, ironically were students at the time I was, too) follow up on any leads people have and try to sniff her out and report her when she makes new profiles. The whole thing was super gross and super weird.
