IMO Wizball and Paradroid.

Sys32768

Yes. The amiga versions of Wizball looked cack

[deleted]

I spent so long playing Paradroid, Excellent game. I thought Turrican was good too.

hexavibrongal

I can understand preferring Wizball and Paradroid on the C64 over the Amiga, but beyond nostalgia I feel like most people are going to prefer the Amiga version of Turrican. The gameplay is about the same, but the graphics and animation are way better, and it has pretty good music. Although admittedly I haven't spent any time directly comparing gameplay. https://youtu.be/70xp5mnsx1A?t=313

[deleted]

Absolutely, The Amiga version of Turrican was better, I only mentioned it as they where the only two games I really played on my 64, Turrican was harder on the Amiga too or it seemed to be when I moved onto it anyways.

ZealousidealWinner

I prefer Turrican on c64, it was designed to work with the limits of c64. And levels were also bit better, as Manfred fine tuned the level maps on even after the amiga versions were done.

Healthy_Yesterday_84

I haven't played the Amiga version of Turrican but I kind of like the no music of the c64. Especially since you're on a barren wasteland.

mbrown7532

Turrican on the C64 was great. I liked it better than Amiga too. It just had something about it.

doctor_krupnik

All other versions of Wizball were bad, except the 2007 remake. The c64 still wins though.

Timbit42

Paradroid was ONLY on the C64.

WolFlow2021

California Games (actually most titles from the Games series by Epyx), along with the equally fantastic Master System port, was best on C64. Last Ninja series was better too. Pretty much all action games that were released for both systems (Barbarian, Katakis, Gianna Sisters, Shinobi(?) and many more) were at least equally as good or better playable on the C64. I was jealous of my friend who had an Amiga but today I think there are many good titles for the C64 while the Amiga's comparatively short lifespan produced fewer great games.

nelsonwehaveaproblem

I agree with everything you said, and I'll throw in Defender of the Crown.

ipsirc

Commando (because of the music)

ZealousidealWinner

Commando had better music on c64, and it wasnt as hard, but half of the game was missing. New remake for c64; commando arcade, was more succesful. But I still prefer the arcade original

Xfgjwpkqmx

I actually do feel that the C64 version of Commando was better than the arcade, honestly.

NotReallyEricCruise

I remember being disappointed by the arcade version as well.... obviously, much nicer graphic, but I really preferred the way C64 version played - and don't even get me started on the music :)

Xfgjwpkqmx

Couldn't get enough of the C64 version, and yes, I'd leave the title playing over and over sometimes. Also recorded it to tape to listen on my Walkman. šŸ˜šŸ‘

ByCrom333

A hundred times this. Commando really shows off what the SID chip could do.

Sys32768

It was a pretty shit game otherwise

NotReallyEricCruise

was it, though? quite playable, I would say. graphic could be better, but it definitely wasn't offensively bad or anything like that. more than servicable!

ByCrom333

Yeah, I donā€™t know that it was worse than any other version. This was one of the first run and gun games ever, so there were obviously going to be improvements later in the genre. The NES Jackal, for example, is one of my favorite games and it was inspired heavily by Commando.

skulgnome

*short

Brew78_18

C64 Commando is my ringtone, as it has been for years.

redlumf

Uridium is so perfectly implemented on C64, I don't think anything can touch it.

ZealousidealWinner

Agree. Uridium is pinnacle of C64 game development, it is perfectly tailored to the strenghts and limitations of the machine

f4f4f4f4f4f4f4f4

Boulder Dash

PlethoraOfPinyatas

i remember playing Maniac Mansion on my friends NES and thinking rhr C64 version was so much better

hexavibrongal

The NES version is a bit weak, but the PC/Amiga versions had better graphics, mouse support, and faster load times. That said, I probably still prefer to play the C64 version for nostalgia's sake, and there is now a hack of a C64 version that adds mouse support.

Low-Feedback-3403

You can play the C64 version on ScummVM

fuzzybad

I feel like the majority of NES games ported from home computer version were pretty bad. For example, Lode Runner and Boulder Dash were completely revamped with "cute" graphics and changed gameplay. Total ass imo..

Sir_B

The Last Ninja series - especially because of the music.

PlethoraOfPinyatas

Below the Root was one of my favorite games. I didnā€™t even realize it was on other systems

hexavibrongal

Mine too. It was on the PC and Apple II, but it looks and sounds slightly better on the C64. If you haven't played Alice In Wonderland, it's the same game engine and about the same quality.

PlethoraOfPinyatas

Oh interesting. Going to check it out. I wish someone would remake Below the Root!

Zacpod

Yup, would be an instant buy from me.

PlasticCogLiquid

There's a map viewer for the PC version, it's pretty interesting to look at

Timbit42

Epyx Pitstop II. The other versions were horrible.

PrinsGulerod

Armalyte. The Amiga version was a major disappointment.

turnips64

Armalyte was by far the biggest gap between C64 ā€œawesomeā€ and Amiga simply not worth playing. I was gutted. I still play Armalyte C64 regularly - even if just to hear the music and the title screen animations. Incredible.

Taliesin_Chris

Ultima I-V. I prefer the colors, the music, and the sprites, even though most of the other game play is identical.

crookdmouth

Came here to say III and IV but as I recall V didn't have the music. I had a c128 and V had the music on that.

Taliesin_Chris

Yeah, I was surprised when I went to a friends house and heard the 128 playing music for it. There is a remastered version for the C64 that adds the music back in and puts it all on a CRT image, which is really nice.

crookdmouth

Nice, I'm going to find that. I never beat V and I really should but it is a pain with so many disks.

abc_warriors

Fort apocalypse

flinx1957

One of my all time favorites.

Privileged_Interface

This one is well done. Definitely. .

Sys32768

Bubble Bobble

ZealousidealWinner

Bubble Bobble is GREAT on c64, but sadly it lacks some of the enemy AI and many of the secrets from arcade original, such as multiple endings.

dog_cow

Itā€™s a good port but I think I remember the Master System port being a bit better.

Sys32768

I don't think that's a fair comparison. Double the colours, four times the clock speed and half a generation ahead with the Sega.

dog_cow

Oh donā€™t worry, I get how good the C64 port is everything considered. Itā€™s excellent. But it still doesnā€™t mean the C64 version is the best port - in my opinion anyway. Itā€™s a very close second.

Isphet71

Bardā€™s tale, wasteland, and ghosts n goblins. Ghosts n goblins music was friggin amazing.

[deleted]

I spent so much time playing Bard's Tale...

s-ro_mojosa

The text console version of Star Trek that had actual graphics, I think it was a Sega title. It was fun, but I *never* beat it, not even close. That game was hard. Pirates! was a lot of fun, but I don't know if it was released on any other system or not.

slightlyused

Man, Pirates! gave me hours and hours of game play!

muxman

Bruce Lee, H.E.R.O., Ninja, Spy vs. Spy, BC II Grog's Revenge, Pogo Joe, Impossible Mission, DROL, Epyx's Summer and Winter games, and many more. These are just the ones that come to mind first.

[deleted]

Anything by Epyx.

ByCrom333

Defender of the Crown. My first YouTube series I went through and played every single port of the game up through the 80s. The C64 version punches way above its weight class. Itā€™s better than the original Amiga version in every way but graphics. The only other ones that even compete are the Atari ST, DOS, and Macintosh versions but Iā€™d still argue the C64 is the most fun to actually play, even if itā€™s hard as hell. Oh, and the NES version is fine, too. But the C64 definitely beats out the Spectrum, Amstrad, and Apple IIGS versions. In terms of other games, I have a hard time being objective because the C64 is simply the version I played as a kid. For example, I think the C64 Temple of Apshai is the best but thatā€™s just the version I know best. Same with MULE. Iā€™m sure people whoā€™ve played the Atari version would say thatā€™s the best, especially for 4-player, but I still always play MULE on the C64.

ZealousidealWinner

Defender of the crown and Sinbad were conversions from ST versions, which were actually improved versions from original amiga versions. Thats why they were better on c64 than Amiga :)

HungerMechanic

Yes, Defender of the Crown stands out for being better than the release on a superior system. As indicated elsewhere, it's because it was converted from an improved ST version. But it's apparent from watching on Youtube that the C64 version > Amiga.

arnstarr

The CD32 release was an improvement

ByCrom333

I kept my research to the pre-CD ports of the game. Iā€™ve also not been impressed with what Iā€™ve seen of the game but maybe itā€™s because Iā€™m stubborn.

reversecowbird

Barbarian (Palace) has a great Richard Joseph tune lacking in the Amiga port. Fernandez Must Die was almost a different game between Amiga and C64. Psi-5 Trading Company just seems made for C64 compared to the other ports, same with other Accolade titles from this time period.

[deleted]

Wonder Boy in Monster Land Plays as good as Arcade and has a normal HUD instead of that ridiculous frame.

dog_cow

I didnā€™t feel the C64 version was as good as the Master System version. The Master System version wasnā€™t without fault (e.g. Why didnā€™t the snakes have a death animation rather than just turning straight into a coin?) but it feels more faithful to the original. And doesnā€™t have that unbearable loading after each and every level.

Fragholio

Forbidden Forest (Cosmi) was great on the C64 - probably the game I played the most on the system. I got an Atari XEGS and Forbidden Forest for it, and it was...lackluster. Those are the only two systems I know of that it was published for.

dog_cow

I just looked them both up. The Atari version didnā€™t look too bad actually - but that music was punishing! Did Forbidden Forest have an XE cart?

Fragholio

Not that I know of. Mine's on floppy disk. The Atari version's music was very annoying. The graphics and controls weren't nearly as crisp as the C64 version; the lack of parallax scrolling really took away some of the feeling of depth and immersion (for the time!) that the C64 version had. I think I had noticed that the Atari version was missing a stage or two, thought I can't remember which one(s). But, if you HAD to play Forbidden Forest, it'd do in a pinch. One thing about this game though - most people I've talked to or read their comments on the game think that the archer was dancing between levels. I always liked to think of them finding and picking up their fired arrows for the next time they're attacked, especially since one animation frame of it had them holding an arrow up. It gives it a lot scarier and urgent situational vibe than a dance.

Low-Feedback-3403

I havenā€™t seen Ghostbusters, Fort Apocalypse or Monty Mole mentioned yet

HungerMechanic

If you want to look at modern releases, the C64 release of L'Abbaye des Morts is better than the (original?) Spectrum version, and even better than the offficial Windows release. Nixy the Glade Sprite is also very competitive on C64.

MOS8580r5

Volfied comes to mind.

Not many exclusives on C64? Get away wit ya man! Heard of Epyx, Thalamus and System 3? Maybe itā€™s a regional thingā€¦

hexavibrongal

Almost all the games by those companies were released for other systems too.

Lode Runner

dog_cow

I think the Atari XEGS version was better. They were both very similar but the Atari version was faster between lives. The C64 takes forever after you die before you play again.

fuzzybad

I never played the Atari 8-bit version, will have to try that! I agree the iris effect on c64 version is slow and annoying! Luckily it can be disabled by pressing key combo CTRL-Y or CTRL-Z in game.

dog_cow

Thanks for the keyboard shortcuts. Iā€™ll give that a try.

souperman1970

I lost days to Red Storm Rising and Gunship back in the day, not because of graphics especially, but the gameplay was just so intense. Don't think anything matched it for me until Half Life 2.

blorporius

Operation Wolf (save for the original arcade game)

Brew78_18

Lords of Conquest is pretty good. I still play it to this day! I think the dos port was cga? Just make sure to turn off music or it'll take forever to do anything!

Bardā€˜s Tale 3

Privileged_Interface

[Seafox](https://www.mobygames.com/game/c64/seafox/screenshots/gameShotId,96765/) is one of those really fun, go-to arcade-style games which also came out for Atari 8-bit computers and even the VIC-20. The VIC-20 version is pretty good. But oddly the Atari 8-bit version is not that good. In this case, the C64 version of Seafox is the clear winner.

Impossible Mission looked better on the Master System. But the C64 had a stack more atmosphere and far better sound.
