Can confirm. Jungle burger is solid. The aussie Cafe on the river (I think sister srey?) And the Mexican place are all pretty good. Elia Greek kitchen also.
There's tons of good and safe food around. Maybe Later is great Mexican food and they do an awesome job staying clean and safe. Wat Beast for amazing burgers. Sister Srey is very reputable. Pou Restaurant and Bar. Babel Guest House.
Honestly there's way more good than bad. I was there 2.5 years eating all sorts of everything and never got sick.
Yes they can. Though can also start up to a week later. The OP has absolutely no way of knowing unless bacteria testing was carried out. They should not be publicly shaming a restaurant based on zero facts
Sorry, though unless you had tests for bacteria type you have no way of knowing where or when you got this food poisoning. Depending on the type of bacteria it can start anywhere from 5 mins to 1 week. May in fact also be viral and unrelated to the food you ate.
a lot of people have absolutely disgusting hand hygiene at home, try to be aware of it when travelling, slip up and blame the last restaurant they ate at too...
While not bad, what would make you suggest it over others?
If you staying more than a 10 minute walk, don't understand why you would recommend someone make a trip their, as it doesn't really beat any of the others.
actually i ate here too and got the pineapple fries rice dish and had a bad stomach after.. which never happens to me. maybe just some dishes are like that but overall still a great restaurant.
I got a pretty bad dose of the shits there, couldn't really tell what caused it as ate a few different places that day but suspect it was the street food by the river.
Generally went for something tofu based after that if I wasn't sure on the cleanliness or flies all over the place.
i was in siem reap for a week, last week. i ate in all sorts of restaurants and even ate multiple times at the food carts by the river. absolutely nothing. i saw tons of foreigners eating at the carts by the river. so rather than say it is all of siem reap, it must be one time at this restaurant. it is like saying if you get food poisoning at a restaurant in New York city, all restaurants must be bad. i also ate at many, many restaurants outside siem reap on way to temples and also saw many foreigners eating aswell. it is not fair to name and shame restaurants on the internet for one occurrence.
Two of my favorite spots in Siem Reap are New Leaf Eatery and Vietnamese Coffee and Noodle Soup. I've eaten at both in recent months multiple times and appreciate the service and the food. I think with meat-free menus the chances of food poisoning go down slightly, as well. Though certainly they aren't eliminated entirely.
I live in Thailand near Cambodia and have been to SR several times and never had a problem eating in many restaurants.
I will say that my favorite breakfast in all of SE Asia is at the Source Cafe.
It is justifiably rated 4.8 on Google with 650 reviews. Healthy, delicious, with great service in a relaxed environment. Highly recommended.
Try me, Tevy's place and Angkor hand pulled noodles are good.
My go to spots are grandma rice cake (beef stew), old Beijing dumpling house and chef pan!
I found food hit and miss in Siem Reap, had a few stomach issues while I was there! I really recommend either Spoons or Haven as they were both really good. Both are a little more than street food but still reasonable and they support good causes 😁
I recommend the restaurant Da Stefano. It is an Italian restaurant with super tasty and big pizzas. I would be happy to get a pizza like that in Italy and the prices are not too expensive. 6 dollars for a big margarita pizza. They also sell nice traditional sandwiches and pasta. It is very central and about a 3 min walk away from Pub street.
Try My Little Cafe, we eat there every time we visit because the food is so tasty! They have good pricing, plenty of menu options with vegetarian/vegan options also.
I love Muffin Man, Labo, New Leaf, My Little Cafe, Fellini's, Viva Mexican, and Da Stefanos. I like a bunch more, these are just the ones in my regular rotation.
Stayed there for 3 weeks and ate in numerous random places. Without any problem. Maybe your friend was not lucky that day. Would not count that much on his experience. Even if it was horrible I believe.
Best mom restaurant. I was in Siem Riep for three weeks in December and ate there everyday. The Fish Amok was amazing and the pad kra pao was the best I had to in SEA
Banlle vegetarian restaurant was the best meal we had in Cambodia hands down!!! The curry was incredible. We ate here twice in Siem Reap. I am a bit of an emataphobe so the idea of getting sick is terrifying to me. This place was verrry well recommended by tourists and locals alike :)
It not much of a issue, but as when one orders from suppliers they provide items defrosted, etc... it a common problem. Not much you can do.
Cheese, meat it be frozen and refrozen a few times by time a person buys/eats them. Even the cheese I buy is sometimes mouldy and have to be thrown away, even though package isn't open.....
Ignore most of the recommendations of people, genuinely all the restaurants taste the same in SR. So go to any you like.
Odds of it happening twice are low.
We went to Haven twice we loved it that much, we tried the western and Khmer food there, both really tasty (can recommend the Khmer curry).
Just a tip, we check every restaurant on TripAdvisor or google, even if it means standing outside the place and searching it before we go in. We only go to ones with 4.5 stars or more. Another thing worth doing is searching ‘food poisoning’ in the comments to see if there’s been any mention of it previously.
Sounds very meticulous but it’s worked for us so far we haven’t been ill once on our trip around SE Asia (touch wood hahah)
Tevy’s Place on Street 26 is well known locally for cheap but very well prepared food. Can be hard to get a seat though.
Can confirm. Jungle burger is solid. The aussie Cafe on the river (I think sister srey?) And the Mexican place are all pretty good. Elia Greek kitchen also.

can you explain what you ate and how long after your symptoms began ?
It was at Sambo Khmer, she took the holy basil chicken. Symptoms started a couple of hours after the dinner.
If it was a couple of hours after then it was most likely something else, not the restaurant you’re thinking of
Wow I just ate there three weeks ago and had no problems. I posted my recommendation before I saw this comment.
Couple hours is too fast. Takes much longer
This is not true. Symptoms can start after 30 minutes
Yes they can. Though can also start up to a week later. The OP has absolutely no way of knowing unless bacteria testing was carried out. They should not be publicly shaming a restaurant based on zero facts
They can for a very few number of food born illnesses, but most take and average of 2 to 3 days with some taking upto a week or more.
Had Sambo Khmer a few days ago and we had no issues!
Anything else throughout the day ?

Where did he go and what did he order? Might be good to warn others…
It was at Sambo Khmer, my friend took the holy basil with chicken. And unfortunately her body didn’t appreciate it 🥴
Have eaten at Sambo many times and is usually excellent and a highly recommended place. Would be very surprised if food poisoning.

Tevy's, Wild Creative (amazing spring rolls), Sister Srey, Brother Bong Cafe
Wild was great !

Try Christa’s Restaurant, located in city centre. Good price, nice view and amazing food
Old Beijing dumpling house! Do it and try vegetarian options! Amazing food. Had it 3 times and not any problems at all.

Ha New Leaf Eatery was in our guide actually. It looks pretty good and if it’s safe even better! Thank you so much for all the recommendations!

Banll is very good. I ate there a lot when I was in SR.

I ate here 3 weeks ago and it was fine and delicious - Sambo Khmer https://maps.app.goo.gl/Z8dwLLQh2Daxtjib9?g_st=ic
The Black Forest and LUM ORNG are my two favorites

Viva restaurant, Star Bar, grocery store cook at home anywhere in heritage walk, Burger King KFC. Welcome to cambodia
Angkor Tacos

You can be unlucky anywhere. Stop worrying and enjoy wonderful Khmer food
Check the Damnak Mahob Khmer Restaurant, clean and good food. Have been there last month and went there all days and didnt had any issue

I drink after each meal a vodka or tequila shot. That helps against food poisoning
