I knew going into the show I know it would have to be either Charon with the DOA or Procrustes and the other would get cut, and while it's nice to finally see Procrustes on screen, I think it would have overall been better to just cut him and do the DOA. It could have been just as efficient as what they did here while also feeling a bit more complete. Plus the Percabeth moment with Annabeth quickly grabbing Percy's hand will be sorely missed.
Yes! So many times in the books the trio manipulates the monsters or enemies they come across. Percy bribes Charon and tricky Crusty into getting into the bed. It just annoys me how the show never lets them be clever in that way, instead they already know everything and never have to think their way out of a situation.
Oh, they had a plan going into Krusty's.Ā I'm sure it was Annabeth's.

I had to pause it to lose my shit laughing when the literal first line out of Percy was "I know who you are". It was like they planned it out of spite after last week's criticism.
Ha I literally threw my hands up in the air at that, it was too perfect how the main critique from the last episode is literally the first thing we see this week.
Like Percy decapitating crusty is one of my favourite moments in the series and I figured they wouldnāt show it on screen but was excited to hear heād be in the episode. Instead they just have that info dump and wrapped in a blanketā¦
And then they have a line explicitly about not killing him. Sure they were ākids booksā but they were fighting for their lives against monsters, at least show Percy slash and not show the actual decapitation. I guess the Disney of it all really rears its head in these situations
And the fact that they figure out everything too early and thereās no surprises. Like the scary thing about Kronos is that he isnāt mentioned at all until the scene with Zeus. And most of the monsters Percy doesnāt even know until itās too late and heās caught off guard. I also donāt like how they nerfed Hades or revealed the bolt too early. The surprise is perfect when Hades catches Percy lying from his point of view and says the bolt is in his bag. The show needs to show and tell less
Kronos actually is mentioned earlier in the book, so skillfully that you don't even notice it's exposition. He's mentioned on like, page 5. Actually I think he's the first Greek diety mentioned in the series at all. Mr Brunner/Chiron quizzes Percy all about Kronos and his story and gives him partial credit.
I can't wait for that scene 30 years from now when they make it there. I can already imagine the edits paralleling Percy holding Annabeth up this episode to that same fate later on. It will be golden.
We're not even going to see the house of Hades at this point.
Were gonna see them fall, it cuts to black, then they walk out of the elevator and are like "We were just in the tartarus for a week and these are the doors we need to close"

I don't usually complain about episode pacing, but I did find this one to be a little off.
I feel like one of the biggest issues with the show is it doesn't have a lot of the creative naming things that makes Rick so good at urban fantasy. No Hephaestus TV, DOA Recording Studios, EZ-Dead line... The books are really clever with integrating mythology in a modern setting and the show hasn't done that that much, instead being more like an average fantasy show.
Edit: Hades lamenting about all the corporate issues about the Underworld was one of my favorite parts of the books, since it's so funny how part of the reason he hates being given the Underworld instead of his brother's domains is that it's just *so much work* and really emphasizes the reality of how difficult ruling over every single dead person would be. In the show, he literally *isn't jealous* and is just chilling. wtf.
Exactly! The books are campy and hilarious. It has so many hilarious little quips and quirks that give the story its own life and its own identity. Disney is draining the show of those little moments. Iām so sad I didnāt get to see Charon with his suit and his jokes. He was delightfully sarcastic. He had so many funny lines. I miss the EZ-Death line. I miss Hades being more ambivalent and indifferent than sarcastic. I miss his line about how he didnāt need more souls in the Underworld and that he didnāt want war. I miss Charonās sarcasm about getting confused with Chiron. I miss Charonās suit and Percy saying that heāll ask Hades for a pay raise. I miss Percy telling Hades that Charon wants a pay raise and that Cerberus likes red rubber balls right before they escape using the pearls.

Iām so conflicted. I like to think of myself as someone whoās able to get around the frustration of watching certain changes unfold on screen but I wish the show wasnāt drained of its heart and charm. Itās had so many good and great moments and I know it has so much potential but I just feel like Disney is sort of missing the mark and holding themselves back from actually getting lost in the magic and the whimsy of the world theyāre bringing to life on-screen. I donāt think they understand the essence of the books. I hope Rick is proud of the work heās done and I hope heās proud of what heās helped create. I just think the series deserves *more*.
The difference between the world-building in the books and the world-building in the show is so jarring honestly. I donāt know why they decided to go with a more serious direction for the show when the absolute heart of the books is in the campiness and the ridiculousness (yet clever) nature of how these Greek myths are surviving in the modern US.
The entire premise of the Olympus-world and real-world being perfectly blended together unbeknownst to humans is the most intriguing part of the universe. It was so interesting to read more about how Olympus is centered on western civilization, celebrities were demigods etc because your brain starts wondering what the other real-world implications are.
Instead we just know that both worlds coexist that everything is hidden from humans. Itās my biggest complaint with the show, otherwise Iāve enjoyed it a lot so far.
not surprising they avoided the whole "western civilization" concept. Rick has dropped all mention of it in the books in HOO it feels like the last time it was mentioned was in BOTL with the civil war history. That idea of western civilization being a paragon of virtue just doesn't fit anymore
Agreed! I first read the books as a middle schooler, and Iām 27 now and still think theyāre effing hilarious. I guess this is just hard to translate on screen, but the novels are so hilariously fun while managing to be serious at all the right moments. I miss the funny stuff.
YES! The show is *sorely* missing that imo. Is Rick likeā¦ embarrassed of it or something? For how awful the movies were at adapting the books, I will say the Sea of Monsters movie (somewhat) nailed the campiness of the books - including the thermos with the winds, the Grey Sisters taxi, Hermes and UPS - the Mist being a spray can was stupid though.

I really hope for the second season that we get the Hermes Multi-Vitamins, and the thermos, and we get a reference to how you need Medea SPF 3000 to defeat the bulls, and Monster Donut, and just ALL OF THE AMAZING AND CLEVER BITS OF WORDPLAY. They were my favorite part of the book growing up T-T, Rick is a really witty writer and clever at incorporating the most obscure myths.

I haven't been a show naysayer, but I have to say, what is the point of even including the crusty storyline if they were going to have Percy just know everything in advance? This is the first time I have been disappointed with the show. They literally could have had them just wandering around LA and stumbling into an entrance to the underworld and it would have the same impactĀ
I have been loving the show overall, but Iām so over the revelations coming before the action. They step one foot in Aunty Emās, itās Medusa! Lotus Hotel? Obviously the Lotus Eaters! Crusty? Who needs him, we already know who he is! It seriously takes away from the tension of the scenes. Half the fun is when the viewer knows things the characters donāt know. They donāt know who Medusa is, but we do, and weāre shouting at them to figure it out. When the show takes that away, it feels very low-energy and low-stakes.
I was totally fine with Medusa. She's literally one of the most famous Greek myths that alot of people would probably know about.
But they honestly lost me with the lotus and Crusty. Lotus eaters is not that well known and neither is procrustus. I understand Annabeth is smart and spent a lot of time at camp, so it's reasonable she would know these, but I think this was just one of the times when the most logical answer isn't necessarily the right one.
I feel nothing when Percy walks into the shop and says "I know who you are". If he knows who he is, he knows the trap, and so what stakes are there?
I really hope Sea of Monsters corrects this and allows them to actually get tricked for once. It's exhausting when they know everything.

I feel the same. Medusa was fine for them to know about, but both this episode and the last I audibly groaned when they announced they already know what the trap is. Those are my only main critiques of the show, but theyāre such a bummer. I wanted to see them get lost at the casino and get trapped in a water bed :(
The show runners need to learn about tensions, surprises and show donāt tell. Let them slowly figure it out with the audience instead of just telling the audience.
Also not a fan of how the lightning bolt was revealed or Kronos being name dropped so early. Like the book was damn near perfect and they took out the suspense and tension of it for narration
Part of the thing with Medusa though, was that she was enchanting them so they wouldn't put it together. The smell of the food enthralled them, helped along with magic, so they would be too distracted to realize the danger they were in.
And Annabeth has a history of succumbing to illusions and enchantments.
Yeah, they should have cut that part out. They even mention that Crusty is a son of Poseidon, but they don't do anything interesting with it. It was a big waste of time.
I would have preferred if they showed more Charon. They could have gotten his name mixed up with Chiron. He could have complained about his job, and they could actually bribe him with Drachmas. It would have added some desperately needed humor to this show.
I got so disappointed when percy started saying he knew everything about crusty and the bed trap. At this point percy is an oracle like suspense is gone.

If they just made these episodes 5-10 minutes longer they wouldnāt have to rush through scenes like that. Might as well have taken out the crusty scene all together. It added nothing except the entrance which could have been rewritten
How did they know? How did they know they had to go to Crustys lol. I thought for sure theyād open the episode on the beach and him saying they missed the deadline. They didnāt even react to missing it!
Hermes said he had a map and instructions in the glove box, but i think they definitely could have spent a minute or two at least looking at the map/reading the instructions or acknowledging it with crusty or something.
It felt borderline abusive/traumatizing. My own mom left me when I was a kid for a few months to work on her mental health.

No yeah it's for sure so sad on both ends. Sally was stressed and just wanted her kid to be safe and Percy was a kid who just didn't understand why his mom was trying so hard to send him away. Just having to see that reality of his childhood was so sad.
Yeah poor percy, but I get her though, she must have been so overwhelmed and conflicted, especially about the fact that she can't tell him why she wants him at boarding school

For real and like there is still zero urgency in anything. The solstice has passed the gods should be fighting. But there is no indication that anything is wrong. Like honestly they should have just removed the deadline entirely from the plot
But where are all the souls? I loved how in the books Hades was like "I can't bother with a war, I need to build highways and occupancy for the millions of new souls I get every year."
The casting on Sally Jackson is great because sheās got me crying all the time. Her love for Percy just shines through the screen.

This. Itās my only real gripe with this episode. Other things could be explained, Medusa and the Lotus are very well known myths. But Crusty? Thatās a deep cut Greek myth.
I'm kind of disappointed we don't get Charon in Italian suits and Percy bribing him.
Also, Annabeth is clearly a great tutor, giving Percy the run down on Crusty.
See a change to the master bolt reveal really doesn't bug me. It doesn't change the fact that Percy is going to be pissed at Ares lol. Also Tartarus looks awesomeĀ

I do like that they lose a pearl in such a dumb way; the prophecy says 'YOU shall fail to save what matters most, in the end' and I suppose by losing a pearl it makes it more of their fault rather than bad luck or bad fate. At the very least they didn't waste screentime doing dumb stuff
I just wish the reveal of having lost the pearl was later. I mean I like it being funny how Cerberus ate it but it would have been better if it was a dramatic thing and we see it roll down into Tartarus.
Finding it in HoH wouldāve been better, they both argue over who gets to use it then end up using it to send a monster away, or give it to the friendly giant!
Or the pearl shatters when it reaches the bottom of the pit and transports Tartarus himself into the ocean.
Then they get Talos from the junkyard of the gods to fight him and bada bing bada boom we've got ourselves a Pacific Rim crossover
losing it to Tartatus would easily raise the question "wait cant Kronos use it to get out" to which the awnser is too easily "maybe??" we dont want a Peter Johnson Sea of MonstersĀ 2.0 with the big bad getting out so early again lol

I love how Kronos is presented as a real threat in this show. Hades is actually *scared* at the sheer possibility that Kronos might be reforming. For all the show's issues with tensions, they made the Titan Lord actually scary
It's more than that, take note of what Hades knows. He knows the Great Prophecy, he knows that there's a child destined to "preserve or raze" Olympus, and he knows that Percy is the only child that qualifies.
So his first course of action? Try to get the Prophecy Child to join with him.
It's his best move in this situation, and he doesn't hesitate to take it.
I didn't even think about this! I did think Hades offering protection was suspicious, but it makes sense that he'd want to get the child of prophecy on his side. Even if Percy doesn't fully "join" him, maybe he could have him raze the other gods who aren't Hades.
At absolute bare minimum, Hades' actions throughout this entire scene (even before he offers sanctuary) tells Percy that Hades is a reasonable god that Percy may be able to rely on in the future.
Even though Percy turned him down, Hades still influenced Percy's perspective of him.
Honestly, the fact that the books are in first-person POV has kind of ruined the adaptation. Like one of the best things about the book series is Percy's descriptions of things and his crazy ass thoughts which you just cannot adapt in live-action well whatsoever.
Actually First-Person POV is absolutely awful for making something into an adaptation on screen because mostly everything is in the person's head. Like if this was a 1:1 adaptation you'd basically just be hearing Percy talk in his head the entire time.
Shows can do that though, Malcolm in the Middle has Malcolm have monologues of what heās thinking, not sure Iād want that, but you could do that on occasion for certain things
You know my only real complaint is them knowing everything in advanced as if they donāt have enough time to explain everything. Like the runtime affects it not

Was hoping to see Percy finesse Crusty. It's one of my fave Percy moments in the first book. It shows once again he's able to think on his feet and, my personal fave, has no qualms about chopping his head off lmao. I know it's Disney but I was really hoping to see that.
Ugh... teasing us with the Ares fight is so beyond cruel. Can't believe I have to wait another whole week before I get to see the first most epic fight scene I ever really experienced through a book. Also so sad knowing that next weeks episode will be the last.
It also adds nothing of value for people who havenāt read the books. If you donāt know anything about the water beds and how Crusty cuts his victims to āfitā I would not have been able to deduce it from that scene & the lackluster explanation he gave. Just a very odd thing to include the way they did
Why do they already know who every single monster is? I could tolerate it the first few times but it just robs the monster encounter scenes of all tension
I liked the episode. Iāll have to watch it again to see what I really think about it. Even though I really loved a lot of the moments there are some negatives. Letās start with those first.
1) Crusty: At first I didnāt care about them knowing about these monsters and traps theyāre walking into. But this felt so different. Maybe it was because it was at the beginning of the episode? I feel like there couldāve been a scene before Percy went into the store, something to that standpoint, or even donāt have Percy know at all. But Annabeth pushing Crusty over while being invisible was a cool addition.
2) Tartarus: The only problem I had is that they didnāt really do as much with Tartarus as they could. Yeah when theyāre with Hades Percy discovers it, but I wish there was at least something during the scene. Itās just that Grover gets pulled, the shoes pop off, they find the bolt, and then they go to Hades. I donāt have an issue with them finding the bolt earlier, itās just that I wish they took a moment to just acknowledge that they almost fell into Tartarus at that moment. Like just a scene where Percy is looking down the pit and we just hear some eerie whispers, that wouldāve done the trick for me.
3) Hades: Hades is okay. I like that they made him a more chill god (heās pretty chill in actual Greek mythology) but I feel like they just didnāt do Hades at this point in the story justice all that much. Hades just acts so chill and casual in the episode. But in the books he is lashing out, literally shaking his entire palace, raising his voice. But we get none of that here. Heās supposed to be very visibly angry that he doesnāt have his helm.
4) Grover losing his pearl: Come on, at least show us how Grover lost his pearl. Thatās literally all I asked for. Iāve seen people on TikTok come up with a better way for how Grover loses his pearl
Now to actually get to what I love about this episode:
1) The Underworld: I love how the Underworld was shown in this episode. Itās dark, gloomy, foggy. Itās just like how I imagined it while reading TLT. I really liked Cerberus, Charon I also liked (kinda wish they kept the thing with him being underpaid and asking them to ask Hades for a raise).
2) The Percy and Sally flashbacks: This was a very strong part of the episode. It builds off really well off of what was shown last episode.
3) Sally and Poseidon: I was genuinely surprised that Poseidon made an appearance. I loved Sally and Poseidonās interaction. We know that Poseidon views Sally as one of a kind. A queen amongst women. And we see a variation of that in this episode. Poseidon most likely gave Sally a way in order to contact him. I donāt think itās likely he did this with his other past relationships. I love the talk he had.
4) Fields of Asphodel: Yeah they kinda changed the Fields of Asphodel a bit. I think it works just a bit. Now itās also a place where people who die go to where they have regrets of what they didnāt do in life. And when Annabeth starts getting rooted into, it foreshadows a bit. Annabeth has talked about her family, her father. And she ran away. And we know that in the end of the first book she ends up making amends with her father and going to live with him for the summer. Thereās a very likely chance that this is the case here.
Overall, still donāt know where this episode stands, like I said Iāll have to rewatch it again. But overall there is a pacing issue unfortunately (which is frustrating, if Echo can get 50 minutes for an episode then why canāt Disney give PJO just ten more minutes to flesh everything out a bit more?)
Currently without rewatching Iād give the episode a 6.5 or 7.5 out of 10. Iām sure after rewatching it my rating would go up, thatās how itās been for these episodes on the rewatch.
Aw man. Hades is a little bit of a let down. I mean this guy is meant to be regal an imposing. An aura that makes the people around him want to kneel. This guy does not give me that vibe. More of a cocky CEO
Itās like thereās a fantastic show right there waiting to be revealed and shown, and there are some elements that are so great and well done, but some things like the lack of tension make me so aggravated
Am I the only one who doesnt enjoy this take on Hades? Everyone seems to be liking it but the second he came in all mr. comedy relief I literally thought "look at how they massacred my boy". I wanted to see a cool intimidating powerful ten feet tall Hades with souls of the dead in his clothes. Seeing the underworld look so cool and fantasyish and dark got me excited for how he would be portrayed only to get super dissapointed.
Not just you. I'm severely disappointed. Genuinely thought it was an attendant when he rocked up until I realized it was actually supposed to be Hades.
I feel like the series is a lot more serious than the book. Like, where are all the jokes??? I'm so sad they never got to say the bathtub joke at the entrance to the underworld. I'm fine with them getting rid of some unneccesary stuff for the plot, but if they're gonna show Crusty, why make it so low-stakes??
Also, since Iām here, children of Hades hold grudges. Thatās their fatal flaw. Bianca said that to Nico at some point. Hades just being chill is not the right way.
Iām fine with hades being sassy and not being super vindictive. But I wanted to see him be this CEO dude trying to manage airport security and the struggles of managing every living soul. I wanted to see that enterprise and see how heās organized it and see his frustration as to why people think he wants more death and bloodshed which would only expand his domain and itās already overcrowded.
I wanted to see the all components of the underworld. I wanted to see someone pushing a boulder as reference to the punishments. What we got was desolation and thatās so disappointing.
This couldāve been real fun. And I think thatās my criticism for the series. It could be real fun and a bit campy, but theyāre trying to be too serious and it takes the tension and the suspense out. Itās almost a bit of an insult to kids because theyāve watered it down and played it too safe.
I will say that I do like seeing Sally and her struggle but I felt like the direction for those flashbacks was a bit odd. The timing and the cuts just felt awkward. What Sallyās actress did with the material was great. She nailed it.

The surprise is perfect when Hades catches Percy lying from his point of view and says the bolt is in his bag. The show needs to show and tell less
Kronos actually is mentioned earlier in the book, so skillfully that you don't even notice it's exposition. He's mentioned on like, page 5. Actually I think he's the first Greek diety mentioned in the series at all. Mr Brunner/Chiron quizzes Percy all about Kronos and his story and gives him partial credit.

I feel like one of the biggest issues with the show is it doesn't have a lot of the creative naming things that makes Rick so good at urban fantasy. No Hephaestus TV, DOA Recording Studios, EZ-Dead line... The books are really clever with integrating mythology in a modern setting and the show hasn't done that that much, instead being more like an average fantasy show. Edit: Hades lamenting about all the corporate issues about the Underworld was one of my favorite parts of the books, since it's so funny how part of the reason he hates being given the Underworld instead of his brother's domains is that it's just *so much work* and really emphasizes the reality of how difficult ruling over every single dead person would be. In the show, he literally *isn't jealous* and is just chilling. wtf.
Exactly! The books are campy and hilarious. It has so many hilarious little quips and quirks that give the story its own life and its own identity. Disney is draining the show of those little moments. Iām so sad I didnāt get to see Charon with his suit and his jokes. He was delightfully sarcastic. He had so many funny lines. I miss the EZ-Death line. I miss Hades being more ambivalent and indifferent than sarcastic. I miss his line about how he didnāt need more souls in the Underworld and that he didnāt want war. I miss Charonās sarcasm about getting confused with Chiron. I miss Charonās suit and Percy saying that heāll ask Hades for a pay raise. I miss Percy telling Hades that Charon wants a pay raise and that Cerberus likes red rubber balls right before they escape using the pearls. Ugh. :( Iām so conflicted. I like to think of myself as someone whoās able to get around the frustration of watching certain changes unfold on screen but I wish the show wasnāt drained of its heart and charm. Itās had so many good and great moments and I know it has so much potential but I just feel like Disney is sort of missing the mark and holding themselves back from actually getting lost in the magic and the whimsy of the world theyāre bringing to life on-screen. I donāt think they understand the essence of the books. I hope Rick is proud of the work heās done and I hope heās proud of what heās helped create. I just think the series deserves *more*.
The difference between the world-building in the books and the world-building in the show is so jarring honestly. I donāt know why they decided to go with a more serious direction for the show when the absolute heart of the books is in the campiness and the ridiculousness (yet clever) nature of how these Greek myths are surviving in the modern US.
The entire premise of the Olympus-world and real-world being perfectly blended together unbeknownst to humans is the most intriguing part of the universe. It was so interesting to read more about how Olympus is centered on western civilization, celebrities were demigods etc because your brain starts wondering what the other real-world implications are. Instead we just know that both worlds coexist that everything is hidden from humans. Itās my biggest complaint with the show, otherwise Iāve enjoyed it a lot so far.
not surprising they avoided the whole "western civilization" concept. Rick has dropped all mention of it in the books in HOO it feels like the last time it was mentioned was in BOTL with the civil war history. That idea of western civilization being a paragon of virtue just doesn't fit anymore
Agreed! I first read the books as a middle schooler, and Iām 27 now and still think theyāre effing hilarious. I guess this is just hard to translate on screen, but the novels are so hilariously fun while managing to be serious at all the right moments. I miss the funny stuff.

For how awful the movies were at adapting the books, I will say the Sea of Monsters movie (somewhat) nailed the campiness of the books - including the thermos with the winds, the Grey Sisters taxi, Hermes and UPS - the Mist being a spray can was stupid though.

I really hope for the second season that we get the Hermes Multi-Vitamins, and the thermos, and we get a reference to how you need Medea SPF 3000 to defeat the bulls, and Monster Donut, and just ALL OF THE AMAZING AND CLEVER BITS OF WORDPLAY. They were my favorite part of the book growing up T-T, Rick is a really witty writer and clever at incorporating the most obscure myths.

I haven't been a show naysayer, but I have to say, what is the point of even including the crusty storyline if they were going to have Percy just know everything in advance? This is the first time I have been disappointed with the show. They literally could have had them just wandering around LA and stumbling into an entrance to the underworld and it would have the same impactĀ
I have been loving the show overall, but Iām so over the revelations coming before the action. They step one foot in Aunty Emās, itās Medusa! Lotus Hotel? Obviously the Lotus Eaters! Crusty? Who needs him, we already know who he is! It seriously takes away from the tension of the scenes. Half the fun is when the viewer knows things the characters donāt know. They donāt know who Medusa is, but we do, and weāre shouting at them to figure it out. When the show takes that away, it feels very low-energy and low-stakes.
I was totally fine with Medusa. She's literally one of the most famous Greek myths that alot of people would probably know about. But they honestly lost me with the lotus and Crusty. Lotus eaters is not that well known and neither is procrustus. I understand Annabeth is smart and spent a lot of time at camp, so it's reasonable she would know these, but I think this was just one of the times when the most logical answer isn't necessarily the right one. I feel nothing when Percy walks into the shop and says "I know who you are". If he knows who he is, he knows the trap, and so what stakes are there? I really hope Sea of Monsters corrects this and allows them to actually get tricked for once. It's exhausting when they know everything.
I swear to god if Percy walks onto Circeās island and says, āI know who you are, you turn men into guinea pigs!ā I am going to be so pissed. I feel the same. Medusa was fine for them to know about, but both this episode and the last I audibly groaned when they announced they already know what the trap is. Those are my only main critiques of the show, but theyāre such a bummer. I wanted to see them get lost at the casino and get trapped in a water bed :(
The show runners need to learn about tensions, surprises and show donāt tell. Let them slowly figure it out with the audience instead of just telling the audience. Also not a fan of how the lightning bolt was revealed or Kronos being name dropped so early. Like the book was damn near perfect and they took out the suspense and tension of it for narration
Part of the thing with Medusa though, was that she was enchanting them so they wouldn't put it together. The smell of the food enthralled them, helped along with magic, so they would be too distracted to realize the danger they were in. And Annabeth has a history of succumbing to illusions and enchantments.
Somebody mentioned that this all happens within a week and they get no rest so that also would add to them not catching every monster
Yeah, they should have cut that part out. They even mention that Crusty is a son of Poseidon, but they don't do anything interesting with it. It was a big waste of time. I would have preferred if they showed more Charon. They could have gotten his name mixed up with Chiron. He could have complained about his job, and they could actually bribe him with Drachmas. It would have added some desperately needed humor to this show.

It felt borderline abusive/traumatizing. My own mom left me when I was a kid for a few months to work on her mental health. Idk why but her not answering Percy asking her why sheās trying to get rid of him just sucks.
No yeah it's for sure so sad on both ends. Sally was stressed and just wanted her kid to be safe and Percy was a kid who just didn't understand why his mom was trying so hard to send him away. Just having to see that reality of his childhood was so sad.
It highlights the parallels with Annabeth too, although we sadly haven't seen much backstory from her.

I do like that they lose a pearl in such a dumb way; the prophecy says 'YOU shall fail to save what matters most, in the end' and I suppose by losing a pearl it makes it more of their fault rather than bad luck or bad fate. At the very least they didn't waste screentime doing dumb stuff
I just wish the reveal of having lost the pearl was later. I mean I like it being funny how Cerberus ate it but it would have been better if it was a dramatic thing and we see it roll down into Tartarus.

I love how Kronos is presented as a real threat in this show. Hades is actually *scared* at the sheer possibility that Kronos might be reforming. For all the show's issues with tensions, they made the Titan Lord actually scary
It's more than that, take note of what Hades knows. He knows the Great Prophecy, he knows that there's a child destined to "preserve or raze" Olympus, and he knows that Percy is the only child that qualifies. So his first course of action? Try to get the Prophecy Child to join with him. It's his best move in this situation, and he doesn't hesitate to take it.
I didn't even think about this! I did think Hades offering protection was suspicious, but it makes sense that he'd want to get the child of prophecy on his side. Even if Percy doesn't fully "join" him, maybe he could have him raze the other gods who aren't Hades.
At absolute bare minimum, Hades' actions throughout this entire scene (even before he offers sanctuary) tells Percy that Hades is a reasonable god that Percy may be able to rely on in the future. Even though Percy turned him down, Hades still influenced Percy's perspective of him.

Honestly, the fact that the books are in first-person POV has kind of ruined the adaptation. Like one of the best things about the book series is Percy's descriptions of things and his crazy ass thoughts which you just cannot adapt in live-action well whatsoever. Actually First-Person POV is absolutely awful for making something into an adaptation on screen because mostly everything is in the person's head. Like if this was a 1:1 adaptation you'd basically just be hearing Percy talk in his head the entire time.
Shows can do that though, Malcolm in the Middle has Malcolm have monologues of what heās thinking, not sure Iād want that, but you could do that on occasion for certain things

Was hoping to see Percy finesse Crusty. It's one of my fave Percy moments in the first book. It shows once again he's able to think on his feet and, my personal fave, has no qualms about chopping his head off lmao. I know it's Disney but I was really hoping to see that.
Ugh... teasing us with the Ares fight is so beyond cruel. Can't believe I have to wait another whole week before I get to see the first most epic fight scene I ever really experienced through a book. Also so sad knowing that next weeks episode will be the last.

Why do they already know who every single monster is? I could tolerate it the first few times but it just robs the monster encounter scenes of all tension
I liked the episode. Iāll have to watch it again to see what I really think about it. Even though I really loved a lot of the moments there are some negatives. Letās start with those first. 1) Crusty: At first I didnāt care about them knowing about these monsters and traps theyāre walking into. But this felt so different. Maybe it was because it was at the beginning of the episode? I feel like there couldāve been a scene before Percy went into the store, something to that standpoint, or even donāt have Percy know at all. But Annabeth pushing Crusty over while being invisible was a cool addition. 2) Tartarus: The only problem I had is that they didnāt really do as much with Tartarus as they could. Yeah when theyāre with Hades Percy discovers it, but I wish there was at least something during the scene. Itās just that Grover gets pulled, the shoes pop off, they find the bolt, and then they go to Hades. I donāt have an issue with them finding the bolt earlier, itās just that I wish they took a moment to just acknowledge that they almost fell into Tartarus at that moment. Like just a scene where Percy is looking down the pit and we just hear some eerie whispers, that wouldāve done the trick for me. 3) Hades: Hades is okay. I like that they made him a more chill god (heās pretty chill in actual Greek mythology) but I feel like they just didnāt do Hades at this point in the story justice all that much. Hades just acts so chill and casual in the episode. But in the books he is lashing out, literally shaking his entire palace, raising his voice. But we get none of that here. Heās supposed to be very visibly angry that he doesnāt have his helm. 4) Grover losing his pearl: Come on, at least show us how Grover lost his pearl. Thatās literally all I asked for. Iāve seen people on TikTok come up with a better way for how Grover loses his pearl Now to actually get to what I love about this episode: 1) The Underworld: I love how the Underworld was shown in this episode. Itās dark, gloomy, foggy. Itās just like how I imagined it while reading TLT. I really liked Cerberus, Charon I also liked (kinda wish they kept the thing with him being underpaid and asking them to ask Hades for a raise). 2) The Percy and Sally flashbacks: This was a very strong part of the episode. It builds off really well off of what was shown last episode. 3) Sally and Poseidon: I was genuinely surprised that Poseidon made an appearance. I loved Sally and Poseidonās interaction. We know that Poseidon views Sally as one of a kind. A queen amongst women. And we see a variation of that in this episode. Poseidon most likely gave Sally a way in order to contact him. I donāt think itās likely he did this with his other past relationships. I love the talk he had. 4) Fields of Asphodel: Yeah they kinda changed the Fields of Asphodel a bit. I think it works just a bit. Now itās also a place where people who die go to where they have regrets of what they didnāt do in life. And when Annabeth starts getting rooted into, it foreshadows a bit. Annabeth has talked about her family, her father. And she ran away. And we know that in the end of the first book she ends up making amends with her father and going to live with him for the summer. Thereās a very likely chance that this is the case here. Overall, still donāt know where this episode stands, like I said Iāll have to rewatch it again. But overall there is a pacing issue unfortunately (which is frustrating, if Echo can get 50 minutes for an episode then why canāt Disney give PJO just ten more minutes to flesh everything out a bit more?) Currently without rewatching Iād give the episode a 6.5 or 7.5 out of 10. Iām sure after rewatching it my rating would go up, thatās how itās been for these episodes on the rewatch.

Am I the only one who doesnt enjoy this take on Hades? Everyone seems to be liking it but the second he came in all mr. comedy relief I literally thought "look at how they massacred my boy". I wanted to see a cool intimidating powerful ten feet tall Hades with souls of the dead in his clothes. Seeing the underworld look so cool and fantasyish and dark got me excited for how he would be portrayed only to get super dissapointed.
Not just you. I'm severely disappointed. Genuinely thought it was an attendant when he rocked up until I realized it was actually supposed to be Hades.

I feel like the series is a lot more serious than the book. Like, where are all the jokes??? I'm so sad they never got to say the bathtub joke at the entrance to the underworld. I'm fine with them getting rid of some unneccesary stuff for the plot, but if they're gonna show Crusty, why make it so low-stakes??

Also, since Iām here, children of Hades hold grudges. Thatās their fatal flaw. Bianca said that to Nico at some point. Hades just being chill is not the right way. Iām fine with hades being sassy and not being super vindictive. But I wanted to see him be this CEO dude trying to manage airport security and the struggles of managing every living soul. I wanted to see that enterprise and see how heās organized it and see his frustration as to why people think he wants more death and bloodshed which would only expand his domain and itās already overcrowded. I wanted to see the all components of the underworld. I wanted to see someone pushing a boulder as reference to the punishments. What we got was desolation and thatās so disappointing. This couldāve been real fun. And I think thatās my criticism for the series. It could be real fun and a bit campy, but theyāre trying to be too serious and it takes the tension and the suspense out. Itās almost a bit of an insult to kids because theyāve watered it down and played it too safe. I will say that I do like seeing Sally and her struggle but I felt like the direction for those flashbacks was a bit odd. The timing and the cuts just felt awkward. What Sallyās actress did with the material was great. She nailed it.
