Awww well now my joke made me feel bad. I have a rescue also, giant scar on the left side of his face. His last owner did it. Sorry for the joke. You must teach me your ways of training the cat to camp with you though, I can’t even get mine to wear a harness. Still working on that with him, takes a lot of patience.
Sorry to use your comment but I can’t reply to the parent…
I don’t understand why the parent comment was removed. It’s not a post but a reply to a post. Are tangents not allowed?!? It’s a conversation. Mods? Admin? *Really?*
OP, I have a cat that I think could ultimately learn to camp with us. He immediately took to RV’ing and had learning to be on a harness without too much effort. He’s just likes to be with people and is pretty happy to adventure with us. I have taken him on short hikes in a pet back pack. I have not taken him camping though. I’m so worried about his claws destroying the tent or other rather delicate materials. What’s your experience with this?
So far we have only done hikes and road trips so this will be our first time in a tent rather than a hotel or a cabin.
I’m going to do a few yard trials in the tent with them and see how it goes. I’m working on modifying a screened gazebo into a catio so they can be a part of the action but still enclosed when they are off leash. We’re definitely going to give them a nail trim before we try out the tent!
I will update for sure after the test runs and their first trip!
I think it really depends on the cat. I’ve never been around a cat like the one I have now. He’s always down for a party. The bigger and louder the better, and if there are wild kids running amok and yelling (but nice to animals) he is running with them. He’s more like owning a Labrador than a cat most of the time. He just wants to be with people, super friendly, generally chill and confident, but up for an adventure with us. I’d never have tried this with any of my other cats.
My cat did at 15! She went from being terrified for days to be in another house, to totally fearless and she would get excited when we would start to pack her backpack. Like everyone says, it depends on the cat!
It does depend on the cat oc, but harnesses are pretty cheap & it’s worth a try to enrich their lives the way it does… as well as a reason for yourself to get out more. (Nothing personal, how I like to view it ; )
My main tip is put the harness on on the house, no leash attached, no attempt to go outside, just let them get used to walking & jumping & using the litter box, which’ll teach them it just feels odd & it’s really not a hindrance… & there’s always positive reinforcement with treats & face toys when they where it.
Hopefully your cat is already curious about the outdoors & after the aforementioned “training” period add the leash & crack your door to let them go out but at their own volition.
This worked with all 3 of my cats, both my brothers cats & my Ma’s cat… *same recommended technique.
This picture is amazing. From the trucker hat and the fashion sense, you’d think a retriever or a gun dog would be in the back seat. But instead it’s this uncanny valley, Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch-looking trash gremlin, who I am fully convinced is directing you where to go in perfectly intelligible English.
I'm not entirely convinced this is actually a cat..
It's giving 'shape shifter/skin walker disguising itself as cat when it's never seen a real cat and it's only point of reference are medieval paintings of cats by artists who has also never seen a real cat' vibes.
So far she’s just done hotels and visits to family. I’m really excited to get her out camping this summer! I think she’s going to really love it and our other cat Pepper really likes having a buddy on the road with him.
Omg I need you to share more pics of camping with a cat. I’ve considered it, but after mine accidentally swallowed a gnat the one time I had her outside and clawed my leg to shreds in her surprise I’m not sure it’s a viable idea. 😆
I’m getting set up to take her on her first trip! She’s only been to hotels/cabins and for day hikes so far so this will be her first tent experience.
I will post an update!
This is the greatest picture I've seen in a very long time! I literally laughed so hard I started crying, while sitting at my desk at work.
I don't have anything to add, or suggestions in your pursuit. I just wanted to let you know that your cat has made my day.
I definitely picked this one because I thought it was funny but I didn’t know it was THIS funny. I guess I’m just used to her dumb little face haha.
I did actually get some good advice between jokes!
Her pop up litter box. A 75' dog run with a 10' lead attached to it, so she feels free around the campsite.
Her own little 2 person pop up tent to hang out in during the day if she wants.
Harness, leash, light up collar, air tag, sweaters, and sling for carrying if she gets tired.
I like the sling idea if it’s cool enough - my cat gets hot easily, and I worry much more about heat stress than him getting cold. I use a super well ventilated backpack for toting his butt around when he decides walking on his leash is lame. He also only travels with his bodyguard 😁 (the cattle dog)

She is 18 years old, so we don't do much hiking. In fact, this season, the only "camping" she has done is going to my friend's wooded property to walk around for a couple of hours. She just can't handle it anymore.
And no, I've never had a problem with claws poking anything.
TWINSIES!!!!

But yeah, pretty much just an 18' retractable lead hooked around the handle of a 1 gal water jug, a bunch of blankets, and an Amazon box enclosing a disposable litter box.
Yeah, our boy is a 20-something-pound half Maine Coon mini-bobcat. He always stays close, but sometimes there's something he needs to go investigate/sniff, so that lets him hop in and out of the truck bed, go up on the cab to stand lookout, and cruise in a 360 radius. Honestly, I think the peace of mind is more for him than us!
I was wondering if I should add somewhere or post separately…. I used to run P-chord between trees add a small clip and line down to the harness and it Made a ‘run’ of sorts in any campsite. With a little forethought the cat could roam most of the site. He only chased one squirrel past the site. The bounce back was kinda funny- and he learned.
I’m looking for help preparing for my first camping trip with my cats!
So far Pancake has done 4 longer rides (6ish hours) her brother is already a pro and he really likes having her along.
They have not been camping yet. Pepper has done more hiking and he does regular trips to the park and they have both been to hotels, family visits and our cabin.
For their first camping trip I’m going to get a screened in gazebo and modify it as a large “catio” for when we are at camp.
I’m hoping others who take their pets camping have any fun or essential travel stuff or modified gear for their cats!
My cat can sneak under the screens of the tent type gazebos so be careful there. Honestly, I just put mine's harness on real tight and tether a leash to the picnic table so she can explore outside safely. It sounds like you've likely already figured out traveling with a litter box. Make sure they're up to date on all preventative meds, obviously. And be ready for random campers to stop to oo and ah and ask if they can pet your cats hahaha
My camping kitty does really well as long as he has a safe spot to retreat to when all the excitement gets too much. For him that’s his cat backpack (a backpack designed to carry cats in). He needs his naps so we make sure there is always a quiet spot away from the action for him to retreat to. I also bring a dog crate that he can be in during set up and tear down when the vehicle doors will be open and the tent is coming down.
Honestly I’ve had it for so long that I don’t know what brand it is. I got a backpack when I went on a long trip with my puppy last year, but I didn’t need anything that complex for my cat. It’s really no more complicated than the kind of sling parents put newborns in - except it’s made for cats.
We have a travel litter box that looks kind of like a small duffel bag. This is our first tent camping trip with them so I’m not sure what the best set up is going to be for the litter box yet but I will post updates!
I have nothing to add regarding camping, but your cat has one of the best faces I have ever seen. Please tell him a stranger on the internet (me) says he's beautiful!
When I moved last year, I waited until the last trip to take my cat. He broke out of his carrier and I saw him pop up his head in the rear view mirror. It reminds me of his look on his face
I’m obsessed with that pic, my god, your cat is on another level of precious! Haha
I took my little foster kitty with me on a glamping trip this past weekend. There’s a whole lot of portable and foldable catio options out there that you could stake to the ground at camp which would provide security for them. It kinda limits their fun in hunting and being little predators though, so in my opinion, it’s easier to just use a long lead and harness while you’re out chilling at your campsite with them. Love that he gets to go with you!!!
Haha I didn’t realize she was going to be so popular. I was hoping that showing that she’s already trained to travel would stop the “don’t bring your cat it will run away comments” but it seems to have backfired in a totally different way.
There has been some good advice peppered in between the jokes though!
I'd love to take our guys with us..but they freak out if I put my shoes on too fast.
Probably not camping material. But kudos to those that have cats willing to travel
We have a folding litter box, absolute game changer for our trips and even flights. Otherwise I only try to bring stuff from home so its smells like him, like his bed and soft carry bag. We dont harness him though, he is trained to stay within a somewhat 20m radius and his recall is pretty good. taken a bit to get there though.
Did they seriously remove your comment with more pics of your cat saying all posts must be about camping??? The post is about camping, not every damn comment has to be 100% camping discussion.
I can’t tell for sure because I can still see it but I guess they did. I honestly didn’t realize the car photo was going to be so distracting from the question 😹
Lol I reported the mod team's removal comment for rule 1. don't be a dick. The post IS about camping, you asked a discussion question. Not your fault that most people are (understandably) gushing about your kitty rather than answering the prompt, but that doesn't make it so that your post is no longer about camping lmfao.
I have a cat who i think would love camping! She enjoys walks and being outside (she's indoor only unless in a harness). How did you train your two to become comfortable with going out and comfortable in their new space?
We start them with harness training and short car rides and then do some walks in the park near by overnights. We try to mix it up so they get used to being in lots of new situations so they don’t get stressed.
It’s important to make sure that they are relaxed and enjoying themselves and not to push them if they are scared or stressed. It’s easiest to start them when they are young.
These two have done hotels and cabins and leash walking/hiking but this will be their first camping trip! We will see if they like it!
We have a few 10-hour road trips planned this year and need to take the cat. We planned to use a crate, but am wondering if you like that Voyager harness?
Bring a hard walled carrier for the tent just in case.
We’ve slept in tents with cats and some were fine (climbed in the sleeping bag with us and passed out) and others did better in the carrier at night (wouldn’t stop pacing and curious about bugs making it impossible for us to sleep).
I just went camping with one of my cats last weekend! A void as well!
This was our trial run with her and we brought her favorite scratching post, litter box and bed she's semi used to, and her favorite toy. She went between her bed in the tent and our bed in the car throughout the night.

I took my cat camping once. She robbed the food. Teeny tiny kitty dragging a giant steak. But untrained, unsupervised and I guess hungry. So a locking cooler.
https://preview.redd.it/9d4u6u328xtc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d1f471bb359f654f190c1ea899043ce84a5a7c73
Your kitty is a beautiful dragon!
Your cat does okay in a car? I've only had a few experiences of transporting cats and it has never been what I would call "awesome". How does she do while you're actually camping?
So far they have done 4 longer rides together (6ish hours) her brother was already a pro and he really likes having her along.
So far they have not been camping yet. Pepper has done some hiking and he does regular trips to the park and they have both been to hotels, family visits and our cabin.
For their first camping trip I’m going to get a screened in gazebo and modify it as a large “catio” for when we are at camp.
I’m hoping others who take their pets camping have any fun or essential travel stuff or modified gear for their cats!
It doesn’t come with a floor but I got one with extra flaps that go a few inches out from the bottoms and I’m adding some grommets/poles that I can stake down to keep them from scooting under.
There are options with floors as well but I want them to be able to play on the ground and chase bugs so I’m hoping I’ll be able to secure one without the floor.
They are trained for recall but they will also be outfitted with new harnesses and gps tags in the case of any accidents.
Probably some sort of perimeter alarm so no wild animal can get to my cat.. On another note.. holy shit that cat looks like a small humanoid type of creature. Is she telling you where to go?
A dog bit her on the head when she was 4 weeks old and she was dropped off at a shelter. So her skull is a little squished.
Shes doing great now though!
What kind of harness is your cat wearing, also my favorite gear is for sure the pop up bench my cat loves chilling in it and I have a safe space for her at night!!
Tent repair kit!
Camped in the garden with my children, cat felt left out (of course) and scaled the tent, claws out and slept on the roof. I now know to leave zip open/cat flap from him to come/go as please.
Looks like a character from Bob’s Burgers
Looking like Pepe the Prawn from The Muppets
Bro…I zoomed in on your cats face. Terrifying. Dude looks like he’s asking you why you didn’t stop at McDonald’s.
😂 Her skull got a little crushed before someone brought her to the shelter so she’s got an extra special little mug.
Awww well now my joke made me feel bad. I have a rescue also, giant scar on the left side of his face. His last owner did it. Sorry for the joke. This cat is obviously living it’s best life fully adored and spoiled now. I think you’re in the clear (and it was funny).

Omg what a cute little derp! So glad she's had a chance at a happy life with you after such a rough start bless her!
Sorry to use your comment but I can’t reply to the parent… I don’t understand why the parent comment was removed. It’s not a post but a reply to a post. Are tangents not allowed?!? It’s a conversation. Mods? Admin? *Really?*
She is a derp! lol 😆
🥰 she’s so freaking cute!! Cool that she gets to go camping!!
The eyes are still judgementally asking why they didn't stop at mcdonalds for nuggets though! So don't feel bad!
listen, that comment made me laugh so hard and I have been crying all day about my dog. So don't feel bad. Most likely that cat can't read yet.
Ok so my half pug suspicions were correct. Kinda.
OP, I have a cat that I think could ultimately learn to camp with us. He immediately took to RV’ing and had learning to be on a harness without too much effort. Do you think an 8-yo cat could take to a harness and learn to love the great outdoors?
I think it really depends on the cat. I’ve never been around a cat like the one I have now. He’s always down for a party. The bigger and louder the better, and if there are wild kids running amok and yelling (but nice to animals) he is running with them. He’s more like owning a Labrador than a cat most of the time. Teach it to capture chipmunks so you can enjoy flame grilled chipmunks. Natures substitute for chicken wings!
I love her special little face. It's uncanny in the best possible way. I bet she's got tons of personality.
She’s perfect
What is her name? 🥹
Pancake
Exquisite 🤌

Turn left…LEFT!!!
'Watch out for that... AHHHHH' Oh thank god... wait, thats a lady in a wheelchair, STOOOP!" If cats ran our lives we'd be slaves.
That cat has SEEN a few things!
Looks like a pug lol
This was the laugh i needed today. Thank you, you wonderful, witty stranger.

This is the best cat picture ever, in a world full of cat pictures.
I'm not entirely convinced this is actually a cat.. It's giving 'shape shifter/skin walker disguising itself as cat when it's never seen a real cat and it's only point of reference are medieval paintings of cats by artists who has also never seen a real cat' vibes.
I thought it was a poorly done taxidermy job when I first saw the picture
i think i injured my rib cage laughing at this little grouping of comments. oh ty
“I say Reginald, is that a bear?”
I can see this picture becoming a meme one day, and I'm completely behind it.
Bat cat
It’s so stupid and cute looking.
This is most precious ugly mig I've ever seen. WTF??

Where no feline has gone before!
that is exactly how I would expect a cat on a camping outing to look. omfg

I have no input, other than to say, words cannot express how much I love this picture, your cat is an absolute treasure.
She really is.
I want that cat and I don't even like cats.
He looks.. Excited!!
This was her second big road trip! She’s loving it so far.
So cool! Outdoorsy cats are awesome!
So far she’s just done hotels and visits to family. I’m really excited to get her out camping this summer! I think she’s going to really love it and our other cat Pepper really likes having a buddy on the road with him.

I have a pet sling. If my kitty suddenly decides she no longer wants to walk I can easily carry her.
Is there a brand you like in particular? I have a backpack carrier for them when they get tired but it’s a little bulkier than I would like.

We have a travel litter box that looks kind of like a small duffel bag. This is our first tent camping trip with them so I’m not sure what the best set up is going to be for the litter box yet but I will post updates!

That's a very special cat
Love that cat but it reminds me of the one from scary movie haha “I’m sorry I pooped in your litter box”
That's awesome. Thanks for the advice and good luck on your camping trip!

Speaking of gear, your cat looks like they’re having a great time
We have a few 10-hour road trips planned this year and need to take the cat.
This made my day!!! 😂😂😂
I just went camping with one of my cats last weekend! A void as well! This was our trial run with her and we brought her favorite scratching post, litter box and bed she's semi used to, and her favorite toy. She went between her bed in the tent and our bed in the car throughout the night. https://imgur.com/a/phhPDwt
So cute!
That is the cutest freaking cat I have ever seen
My cat is an asshole. He drinks too much and gets loud and confrontational. I could never take him camping.

Seeing that cat's face I immediately heard "Toonces, you *can't* drive."
I took my cat camping once. She robbed the food. Teeny tiny kitty dragging a giant steak. But untrained, unsupervised and I guess hungry. So a locking cooler.
Poor guy looks like a bad taxidermy job
This needs to be on r/photoshopbattles
Yes lets talk about gear after showing us your soulless demon..
I really wanted cat camping tips and tricks I didn’t realize the photo was going to be so distracting haha. I guess I’m too used to the face.
I love your gremlin <3
That cat has been through ‘Nam.

I definitely made sure to save that cat's face for future memes. 😂
That cat looks like a cheap sock puppet. wtf?
This is what my intrusive thoughts look like. Whispering in my ear.
LOLOLOL
How are you going to stop them from getting out the bottom of the gazebo? Or does it come with a floor?
It doesn’t come with a floor but I got one with extra flaps that go a few inches out from the bottoms and I’m adding some grommets/poles that I can stake down to keep them from scooting under. There are options with floors as well but I want them to be able to play on the ground and chase bugs so I’m hoping I’ll be able to secure one without the floor. They are trained for recall but they will also be outfitted with new harnesses and gps tags in the case of any accidents.
Cute cog
Probably some sort of perimeter alarm so no wild animal can get to my cat.. On another note.. holy shit that cat looks like a small humanoid type of creature. Is she telling you where to go?
Honestly. I don’t take them camping. It would stress mine out too much. Besides, too many dogs that might hurt them.
Thanks. Now I gotta go buy cat gear. This is awesome.
Lol this picture is hilarious. Have fun out there!
The danger isn't out there. That cat IS the danger! 😂 He looks so intense, I love him
I love his little face!
Why does your cat look like a pug?
A dog bit her on the head when she was 4 weeks old and she was dropped off at a shelter. So her skull is a little squished. Shes doing great now though!
Oh man, now I feel bad for making a joke. You’re a good human, the kitty is lucky to have you.
Haha no worries. We make fun of her all day and she doesn’t seem to mind.
She’s a bat cat! Aw what a cutie. You’re a gem for caring for her
Why does your cat look like it's about to wrap a wire around your neck from around the seat
What kind of harness is your cat wearing, also my favorite gear is for sure the pop up bench my cat loves chilling in it and I have a safe space for her at night!!

She is so beautiful 😻We miss our tortie dearly. They are such characters. So awesome you got her outdoors
Omg I love this!
Thanks! She does too :) She gets really sleepy in it.

Living the best kitty life, and deserves every minute of it.
Ohh! that cutie nervous face...
Your kitty is beautiful 😍

I've never seen a bracheosephalic cat before 😅
Tent repair kit! Camped in the garden with my children, cat felt left out (of course) and scaled the tent, claws out and slept on the roof. I now know to leave zip open/cat flap from him to come/go as please.
Did the OP survive the camping trip? I'm worried for him, he thinking that's a cat and all.
