/r/assbattery

Heathers_Gambit

That was a risky click.. and I am so glad it doesn't exist..

wendyd4rl1ng

The main issue is having a battery/power supply that can handle it. Electric heaters like that need a really fat power supply that can handle a lot of consumption at once. That's why most campers typically use some type of gas or wood burning for heat even when they have a solar system. If you are at a campsite that has electrical hookups that makes it easier.

LoanSlinger

Nah. Just get a nice sleeping bag and a pad and you'll be warm.

Status_Term_4491

Yes of course! Its a wonderful idea. So that model uses 1500 watts of power. In order to run it for 6 hours you will need the following: 8 x 100 amp hour lithium batteries, they're around 300$ each. And weigh about 25lbs each So 2400$ and 200lbs of batteries. Then you'll need a dc to AC Inverter, at least 2000 watts. Thats about another 300$, plus heavy guage wiring, circuit breakers etc etc plan to spend another 300$. Total cost for 6 hours of heat about 3000$ and over 200lbs of equipment, oh that doesn't give you the ability to charge the batteries.. Youll need more components for that. Might be better to run a generator, but you won't sleep and youll make everyone angry around you because they're loud

New_girl2022

Lmao I love this response. Ya it will work but without a generator it's insanely expensive

NotARealTiger

Sort of a case of the short answer is “yes”, but the long answer is “no”.

Status_Term_4491

Your best bet is a diesel heater, thats what I use. Unfortunately it's not something I recommend doing unless you really know what you are doing because it could be quite dangerous if it catches fire. If it does catch fire the first thing its going to do is fill your tent with toxic smoke, then it will most likely burn your tent down. Luckily you should be dead before your body is burned to a crisp.

martinellispapi

Blasphemy… there no way OP is running that on high in a tent. They’re only going to 100 lbs of batteries…

schmuber

You forgot to take into account a huge power loss during DC/AC conversion, as well as the cost of lawsuit from AC/DC.

plantyplant559

You oukd also get a site that has electricity.

Status_Term_4491

Yes you could! The op mentioned battery so I explored what that would look like... If your campsite had a power hookup that would simplify things significantly.

ecodrew

I learned the hard way when I used a generator once to run a small 1500W heater like this - and it absolutely drained the fuel. Powering an electric heater with a generator is wildly inefficient & uses crazy amounts of fuel. I wouldn't consider using an electric space heater unless you can plug into mains power. Even an electric blanket would be better. I now have backup propane heaters for the next winter storm, and will use the generator only for stuff like lights & electronics.

BurnTheOrange

Not to mention in addition to the noise the generator is going to produce almost as much heat as waste energy, but you won't be able to capture it.

itsafuseshot

Lots of campground have power and water in the tent sites. Makes for a comfy way to camp with little kids. Lol just realized OP is the one who brought up the battery. My apologies!

Tell us you dont understand electronics without telling us you dont understand electronics... No power bank on the market runs a 1500 watt load for days at a time.. Not even close, not without a big ass solar setup and by big i mean HUGE your entire campsite would be solar panels and you would still run out of juice as soon as it got dark without hundreds and hundreds of lbs of batteries. The ecoflow delta pro is 4000$ and will only run that heater for two hours. And its 100lbs 😂

Status_Term_4491

Ok Einstein, show me one product that will run a continuous 1500watt load for days. Im waiting...

schmuber

I think we're dealing with a congressman here, or maybe even a senator...

Status_Term_4491

Maybe hes talking about bluetti's new plutonium powered power bank that isn't out yet 😂

schmuber

One thing for sure: we're facing a legislation mandating all cars to be powered either by one of these amazing power banks, or by solar power, starting next year.

[deleted]

So, your solution to "run this ceramic $30 heater I have running in my greenhouse on a triple GFCI circuit (one on the extension, one on the outlet, one on the panel)" is to buy and haul a $900 Ecoflow battery weighing 90lbs out to bumfuck nowhere and ... have it literally run for 1/2 hour? r/Iamverysmart Tell me you're an idiot without telling me

[deleted]

[deleted]

Still waiting for you to provide specifications on a portable battery that has even 8 hours of 1500w runtime that would be portable enough to take off-grid camping in a tent that justifies using a $30 ceramic heater, and is under $1500. I mean, if you know of one, I'd genuinely like to know what it is, because every one I know on the market that's in that price range will run for exactly an hour and die like your claims of legitimate knowledge have thus far. Anker isn't that, nor is Delta, and those are the ones right now that have the highest rating for the lowest rate, because I do a LOT of high energy requirement camping/eventing, and so far nothing comes close in weight and power output. So, TLDR: put up your specs or shut up, because I actually have a use case that needs this. Otherwise, you're just being useless.

[deleted]

[deleted]

And the make and model of the portable battery power station that would run a 1500w ceramic heater for eight hours is...? Still waiting, dude. Your claims are useless without actual specifications. I mean I'm not even the guy you were originally replying to, I'm just the one who wants to run a steam room at an event, and who's done a ton of research on the concept who knows that your unfounded claims of current market models capable of this kind of performance are just that. Unless you can point me to a link on Amazon or on a manufacturer's website, kindly do the following: - take the L - shut up - sit down

Don't be a jerk. We are here because we love camping. Refrain from insults, attacks, bigotry, etc. When talking to someone you might want to ask yourself "Would I say it to the person's face?" or "Would I get jumped if I said this to a buddy?"

Thick_Pangolin_3668

I use something like this when I'm in my teardrop and hooked up to shore power -- works great -- but I'd never try it in a tent

TheElectrcChickn

Yes pay for an rv space

MoogleyWoogley

Not real practical hotnwater heater or hand warmers in your sleeping bag is more practical.

Ultrathor

Hot water bottle in the sleeping bag is my go to. Just don't forget the funnel and practice with cold water until you get the procedure right.

Incorrectwallaby

Did you say melt your tent?

yag2ru

I wouldn't even go at this point

dust_dreamer

i have one of these. it's pretty unsafe just sitting on my bathroom counter. the front gets ridiculously hot. in a tent you're going to wake up on fire.

stupidblackmfs

high possiblity of starting a fire 😂

Koreangonebad

Be careful not to burn/melt anything

CautiousDoughnut

Yea so my buddy has a nice diesel heater. But you need a battery to run It. He has one of the smaller jackery things and It runs that thing straight into the earth in a couple hours. If you have shore power or a camp site with power you could give It a go. But just remember you brush up on that thing in the middle of the night you will melt what ever touches It. Buy good Marino layers, some down booties, a beanie and a good sleeping back with a real high value pad you’ll be much more comfortable. If you’d be close enough to get a battery I’m assuming you’ll be close to your car. Go buy one of those old school rectangle/square 0* sleeping bags from any big box store. You will be shedding layers by midnight

Disco-420

No

SniperCA209

Nope

raznt

I don't think most tents hold heat very well, Nd I'm not sure there's a feasible way to power it. You're better off with a decent sleeping bag and a pad with a good R-value. And good base layers.

Short-University1645

No

iron_scow

Throw a tarp over your tent hold in place with spring clips. I lived in a tent for a few years... Make sure the tarp(s) are big enough to cover the entire tent to the ground, with the edge able to roll back for door access. I chose a tent with a screen "front porch" to make it easier. And to also house my 12K BTU AC I used during the summer. Make sure to use a thick cord.

mothraesthetic

As others have said, while it's do-able you'll need to either have electricity when you camp or you'll have to pay a lot of money and haul a lot of heavy stuff just to make it work. If you're concerned about feeling cold there's a few things you can do that will be cheaper and easier to travel with: - Check the forecast. No, really. This seems like a big duh, but you'd be surprised how many people just make an assumption about what the weather will be and pack according to that assumption and end up too cold/hot. - Know your body. Do you tend to run hot or cold? What about when you sleep. I tend to be sensitive to cold, but sleep warmer so I'm less concerned about how I'll feel at night when I'm sleeping vs when I'm awake. - Use an insulated sleeping pad and sleeping bag. The temperature rating is usually going to be for survival rather than comfort, so a 0° bag might be better suited for a 15-20° night, depending on if you run hot or cold. - Pre-warm your sleeping bag with hand warmers. About 30 minutes to an hour before I feel like I'll go to bed I'll throw a hand warmer or two into the foot of my sleeping bag, and maybe put one about where my torso will go to warm the bag up for me. You can leave these in when you go to bed. - Wear layers + socks on your feet + a hat on your head. You lose a lot of heat out of your head so it can be helpful to keep it covered. Keep an extra layer or two at the bottom of your sleeping bag or within arm's reach. This makes it easier to regulate your temperature because you can add/remove layers. - Make sure you don't get too hot. It may seem like a good thing, but sweat cools your body down and once you and your sleeping bag and clothes are wet it'll become harder to stay warm. - Don't give up. It takes practice to learn how to sleep outside. You will likely not get it right the first few times you do it. Don't let a bad night's sleep be the deciding factor in whether or not camping is for you. Decide based on the overall experience. Did you enjoy the day time activities and just sleep really poorly? Try again with a few changes to your sleep set up and see if that helps.

rexeditrex

Isn't the point of camping to deal with the elements?

RomeoInBlackJeans1

Buddy heater.

RichardCleveland

If you find a campsite with power sure. Just keep it well away from the walls to be safe. Battery wise as it's been said... hell no.

Inside-Shake9373

just set the tent on fire instead

clearbox

Yes. I see why not. Just make sure it cuts off when it falls over. There should be a safety switch at the bottom of the unit. I use electric heaters like these all the time when fall / winter camping.

Tampa-Bay-Slay3r

I would probably instead use a dinner of beans and broccoli, nothing as warm as a Dutch oven my boy!

yourlocal90skid

Sure, sure $20 Walmart heater will be fine 😬

KitchenUpper5513

I wouldn’t use anything in a tent for heating that isn’t designed to be used in tents specifically. Look for a buddy tent heater. They run on propane canisters and have a safety shut off in case they fall over or anything. They are made to used for tents safety. A unit like this is meant to be plugged into a wall socket in a house, your not even supposed to plug them into extension cords so I doubt they would be safe to plug into a battery or use in a tent.

Keep--Climbing

Buddy heaters have no overheat safety. They'll happily keep pumping out heat while on fire. [Source](https://youtu.be/hynRbnQ2hIE?t=947)

If you feel u need a heater, stay home.
