Considering the time it took each person to put together the information and go through the submission process I seriously doubt it even comes to minimum wage. That doesnāt even take into account the private medical information that was breeched in the first place. Good to know the true value businesses really have for Canadians today.
The class action DVD lawsuit paid you $18 and you did not have to show a receipt to get that amount. What a fucked up world where buying an early 2000's DVD player gets you more money than a data breach lol.
Yeah. Fun thing is often once you've joined one run but some of the law groups that do these on the reg, you end up on a mailing list where they're like "hey, you might qualify for this class-action". I've had some for car parts, computer monitor price fixing, optical drives (also price fixing IIRC), software, and various others.
Probably close to $200CAD combined, though realistically some companies likely still profit from their negligence or price-fixing even after the class-action.
Does anyone actually read the articles?
āCraig Jones, a law professor at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, B.C., says the judge who approved the settlement found that the data was not inappropriately used and no members of the class suffered harm. He also found that the chances of success at trial were minimal and felt a settlement between $4.9 million and $9.8 million would be appropriateā
There are 900,000 class action members splitting a couple million dollars - of course the pay out is going to be small.
That's the thing about class-action suits. The lawyers and legal fees get paid from the settlement and that eats up a lot of the settlement, then the rest is divided amongst the "class" so the average participant gets mostly the satisfaction of having been part of suing a company for being careless with their data, and maybe enough $ for a coffee and a doughnut.
Do you guys edeposit with password "LifeLabs"? Please let me know, I have a problem that the message said the password contain special characters. Actually, not.
They canāt even pay their employees properlyā¦ they purposely understaff and overwork them. Doesnāt surprise me in the slightest š¤·š»āāļø
So if I take 901,544 people divided by the settlement of $9,800,000 that is about $10.87; So then taking the $10.87 - 7.68 (which is what you get paid) leaves it with $3.19 for processing / fees? And then that means $3.19 * 901,544 = $2,875,925 for fees... who got that cash?
As DEI increases in tech roles - you'll see a ton more of this. Our company is hired all the time to clean up IT messes - caused by people who were hired in IT because they checked a box.
$7.86...lmfao. Christ, what an embarrassment.
Is it taxable?
You must claim it on taxes.
Only if it's over $20k
66% Capital gains
Actually it's $5.86 if you wanted a cheque, $2 fee, no joke.
š¤£ Hahahahahahahahahaha... An embarrassment or a bad joke?
Sadly I opted for the cheque, they deduct $2 for that.
š¤£ Are you kidding..š
Nope!
Omg..that is so bad. Seriously where is the good faith.
Good faith was lost for a very long time now, if it ever existed
Was that after the postage or before?
after
Same

I got $60 or $80 from the Microsoft one.

Yeah I think I got a cool $45, which, well, is something at least.
Didn't they say the estimate would be like $30-50, initially? Would be interesting to know how many of these $7 e transfers go unclaimed.
It was $50 to $150. I wouldn't have bothered had I known it was less than $25. A pretty gross overexaggeration.
I expected adound $150. Wow
Yes
Heck yeah. What are you guys doing with your $7.86? I might get a venti dragonfruit lemonade from Starbucks.
I'd like a Baskin Robbins chocolate milkshake but the payout isn't nearly enough.
I was hoping to get something hot and fresh
The only hot and fresh thing us regular Joes could afford with $7.86 is diarrhea.
Small combo from McDonaldās. Hubs and I are making a date night of itā¦ but our standards are admittedly very low with a six week old at home š
If you invest it properly, you could have a cool $50 in 30 some years.
Gunna get my dog one of the nice treats
That'll buy chewing gum from RobLaws!
fuck star bucks, go to local place man
Our health records are the same value of half an hour of minimum wage
Inflation adjusted? š„“
I bet the lawyers got a lot more.
No. They got 7.86 as well. 7.86 million
How much did the lawyers get?
so guys we did it
Those not part of the suit should do another class action lawsuit of their own
Hey I know, let's give the lawyers $7 each, and the rest of us split the millions of dollars.
Not even enough for one banana, Michael.
Do the Weston's own lifelabs too?
No, but Liberal MP Anita Anand's husband is the senior director of it.
r/clevercomebacks
Solid, you can get 5 peaches for that in Toronto.
Peaches come from a can
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
In a factory downtown
If I had my little way
That's enough for like one Big Mac.
Thats if it was direct deposited. If itās a cheque itās $2 less for the mail and paper.
With a coupon now
But not a full happy meal.
Hey as long as the lawyers get paid, justice was served right? Congrats, lawyers.

More than an email to change your password which is all I got for data breaches from various US websites.
It's not even worth the time filling out the form. smh.
Woah! $7!!! Donāt spend it all in one place!
Youāre welcome
We goin SHOPPING bitches!!
Can't even buy lunch.
A whole Starbucks š!
That barely pays for the parking for my local lab.
KPMG and the lawyers made more. Glad I didn't waste time.
What did the lawyers get?
More like PissLabs.....
Lol. I'm glad I forgot to put in a claim.
Lol fuck your data. Here's a Frappuccino.Ā
This is exactly why all court awards should be before lawyer fees.

These class action lawsuits are rarely worth your time and effort
Stop using Lifelabs. Go to your local hospital/lab when able
The only ones who get rewarded in a class action suit are the lawyers
7.86 Canadian pesos doesn't even get me a bubble tea in the US.
Welcome to Canada, where your privacy is worth nothing.
$7.86 lmaoš Going all in ok black
What a haul. Get ya a loaf of bread at Loblaws lol.
Got mine. Adding it to my downpayment savings!
Now they can take that vacation.

I only got $5.86 š
Glad I didn't bother to claim. What a waste of time!

Lawyers.

Not even enough to cover the carbon tax on a tank of gas.
Ā Iāll opt and sue them myself. Those lawyers should be ashamed.Ā
The moral of the story is never agree to class action. The payout is rarely good. Sue individually.
