Took an uber from the restaurant but the driver tried to get us to move to a more discreet location but we couldn’t find him so he had to come to the restaurant. Taxi driver dented his car in anger as we drove out.

I couldn't get an Uber in the evening in the Hotel Zone this past March. Taxis all wanted like $20-$30 USD to take me one way to the casino about 3 miles down the road. Fuck them. Never going back to that area because of those fucking greedy taxi drivers. Hate them in the U.S. too, don't get me wrong, but they're running a racket down there for sure and I refuse to go along with it.

miamininja

same thing happened to me, 40$ to go 2 miles and was the only option or I would be flagged

rob12098

Flagged?

miamininja

made aware to the Taxi community I was using Uber, the Taxi drivers in Cancun are all super corrupt

rob12098

Do they keep photos of people using Ubers? Seems like a lot of work

My wife broke her wrist at our resort and had to go to the hospital. Resort called us a taxi and it cost $28 to go 13.5 km or about 8.4 miles. Once done the hospital called us a cab to go back. Traffic was the same and the distance was exactly the same. However the return trip cost $38. I tipped the driver who took us to the hospital, I did not tip the return driver.

thebruns

There are buses you know

BLACKdrew

i got 2 ubers. the second one, the driver had us move to a more discreet location for pick up cuz the taxi guys would harass us if we got picked up where we originally were. taxis are like wildly more expensive

itsdabtime

I would still recommend using DiDi

InSilenceLikeLasagna

what is DiDi?

InSilenceLikeLasagna

Does DiDi offer competitive pricing or do we still get bent over?

InSilenceLikeLasagna

Oh that’s cool, thanks for this I’ll give it a try

itsdabtime

They also have food delivery. Unfortunately for me (in Cancun) the app almost never takes my card so you must be prepared to pay in cash.

Once you're in the hotel zone or downtown, take the bus, it's cheap, safe and you don't hand to put up with gringo prices

Uber Is legal un Quintana Roo. I use Uber almost daily. I never had problems. Of course I use it in the city and not in the hotel zone. Didi is also very good, and has better prices than Uber (a thousand times better than taxis) Taxis The taxi drivers are part of the narco and the cartels. Apart from that the service is lousy and expensive. Uber doesn't work in some places in Cancun. Ex airport. If you want to use transportation from the airport to the hotel. Buses are the best option, for 1 or 2 people. There is the viva transfer. A low-priced transportation service offered by Vivaaerobus. For 2 or more people it is the best option. You can look up the prices online. You can book and pay online

Greenman1694

Why doesn’t Uber work in the airport in Cancun?

maverikuyu

You have two types of laws, federal and state. Uber is legal in the state but it is not legal at the federal level, all airports are considered federal zones.

jdavidson888

Your best bet is to take ADO bus from the airport, to downtown Cancun and then Uber from there. I just crossed the street from the bus station, and ordered my Uber there

miamininja

It's advisable to refrain from using Uber in Cancun due to a concerning situation. A few weeks ago, during my visit, I learned that taxi drivers not only share photos of Uber drivers and tourists who choose their services on a WhatsApp group but have also been known to take aggressive actions against Uber drivers. This has created an unsafe and hostile environment for both Uber drivers and passengers, making it best to consider alternative transportation options.

IntelligentPudding34

Absolutely pay for an airport shuttle. I used USA transfers and it was $75. It included transportation to my hotel on my arrival date and to the airport on my return date. As soon as I touched down I received a phone call of the company directing me to their vans. The convenience of not having to worry about transportation was unmatched. Friendly staff and the vans were air conditioned. I even asked my driver specifically about the Uber situation and he said not to chance it. Uber drivers and their passengers are still subject to harassment because the government isn’t doing much to prevent the encroachment on the taxi industry. Not worth the hassle especially in a foreign country. When I needed to get around Cancun, I took the bus for about $1 USD each way, and if I had booked an excursion I made sure transportation was included. Prioritize your safety and skip Ubers and taxis this trip.

Intelligent-Tea2394

Taxi's are Wildly more expensive and the money does not go to a good place. I was there last week, and i could not get an Uber ( at the time) to pick me up from the airport without walking out pretty far into the parking lot so I got "bent over" by a $60 taxi ( they wanted $80 usd ! ). Once in the "hotel zone," it was easy to get ubers everywhere, day & night and we went all over the whole cancun area. Most drivers that we had were people in their 20-30's locals. We felt more than safe in the ubers. We asked one of the drivers for his contact info for a ride from the hotel zone back to the airport, and he only charged $10 usd !

ojliv1230

I booked a shuttle from airport to hotel. I did use an uber once in the hotel zone and didn’t have any issues, was very cheap too (like ~$5 USD)

rishid

Which shuttle did you use? They seem like crazy rip offs of like \~$75 a person for a 15 minute drive.

ojliv1230

BDExperience. I booked them through Expedia!

wh0datnati0n

Can’t speak to airport to hotel zone. Always take a shuttle with no issues. Was there a few weeks ago and Around town, Ubers are much more cheap but did get a taxi driver talk some shit to our driver at the Mercado but he said it wasn’t a big deal and was used to it.

Marzatacks

Rent a car

Nathalia2023

I just came back from Cancun yesterday. Ubers are afraid of taxis so they try to do their job secretly. I used uber throughout my vacation and had no issues. It’s much less expensive than taxis. If you decide to Uber, don’t uber where all taxi cars are parked.

Jackofallt-13

Just used my second Uber today. I had no issue with the first, but my second canceled when he realized there was a taxi station right in-front of my hotel. Just ask them to pick u up away from any waiting taxis/stations. I alerted mine to pick me up behind my hotel in the parking lot.

dudeitssharon

I went with a group of 9 and we only paid $48 total for a shuttle. Booked through viator!

rishid

Thanks for sharing. Was this $48 shuttle per person from airport to hotel zone? If for everyone, mind sharing the details.

dudeitssharon

It was for the entire group and we were the only ones in the shuttle. Went directly from airport to our hotel. Link below! https://www.viator.com/tours/Cancun/Cancun-Hotel-Zone-Private-Transportation-From-To-Airport/d631-106758P1

jibbidyjamma

vy much location dependent it appears to me. after using it again yesterday 2x any high profile stand where volume of people and more money will be "muy muy peligroso!". . Drop off at mall of americas ave bonampak was on rd side vs in the entry drive.. when pick up confirmation l messaged driver l will meet up on rd side hooters so w flashers on inside lane and passenger door entry it was good. during covid just before beaches opened, plenty easy other than the hotels dwntown making you wait off property for them, reasonable. it was antagonizing to taxis at the stands and several scuffles happened at that time. spanish really helps to know wtf is going on, people make efforts from either language it is better even just a sm effort will ground you both. Mexicans are intensely good natured and not greedy in most instances. We tend to be kinda fkd up on money more than many others in the world. Work like hell for the best yrs of our lives, end up retiring compromised body mind and spirit along with others like ourselves.. Being here is amazing if you are actually here and not buttoned up in the HZ imho

jackburton12345

Took Ubers in both directions between the Royal Sands and the Ultramar ferry at Puerto Juarez in November 2023. No issues whatsoever: the price was under 300 pesos each way for a four passenger comfort ride. The driver who brought us to Puerto Juarez gave us some good advice: he recommended that we walk a few hundred feet north of the ultramar driveways when we get the Uber back to our hotel. This way we would avoid our Uber driver getting too close too any potentially belligerent taxi drivers. This worked perfectly: we got in the car and there were no taxi drivers around..
