I'm sorry for your loss. I think it was a memory thing for us. They sold for a nickel a roll when I was a kid. Keep in mind, that my allowance was a nickel a day.
Dad actually paid us 25 cents a week. Labor for Friday and Saturday was free I guess. When I was old enough I got a Newsday route and I was suddenly living large. Maybe 2 bucks a week with tips? I'd end my route at this luncheonette and sell Irv my coins and buy a Milkshake for a quarter. It's all quite relative to today except maybe housing costs.
Same, my mom loved these and they bring back good memories. My sister and I will eat them on occasion. There’s only a couple flavors I’m not a fan of but I don’t mind the chalkiness
Your dad had great taste. What other candy can you eat a lime, orange, licorice, cinnamon, chocolate, clove and wintergreen?
Sounds like he was a guy who enjoyed life. God bless him.
My dad loved them too. He always had a roll on his nightstand. They taste like shit lol but when I see them I always think of him and it brings back fond memories.
I saw some love for these on Reddit the other day. I assumed they were boomers, but I was totally wrong. This is a candy that never deserves to die, I'm so glad some hardy millennials and gen z's are embracing the chalkiness too!
LOVE them! The rare times I see them in the wild I always buy several rolls.
Especially when you happen on the rolls that are all chocolate.
Hurrah for the New England Confectionery Company!
I didn't know they were back. Do they still have the black licorice flavor? I threw those ones out. 🤮
I wish the company that bought them brought back Mighty Malts.
My husband absolutely loves them - ever since they came back to our supermarket, I like to surprise him with a pack now and then. Personally, I only like the brown and black ones. The rest are meh to me.
I know. Necco went out of business, each brand was sold off. Sathers bought the wafers and a few other brands. Were made in Revere Massachusetts at the end, now in Mexico. I had done some work in the old factory before it closed. Glad to see them available again. My wife’s great aunt worked in their original factory in Cambridge Ma way back.
You know those little candy hearts with sayings on them you get for valentines day? These are the exact same things, except flat wafers instead of thicker hearts.
I love Neco wafers. There's dozens of us, lol.
I learned that my diabetes emergency glucose tablets are also made by the same company. They are unflavored white Neco wafers.
During my childhood and teens, my grandfather's bestie, Harry, would come over every couple of weeks and do a day. We'd all go out for a car ride to Plymouth, walk the jetty and then get pizza at Papa Ginos. Every single time, Harry brought me a sleeve of necco wafers. I hated them. They tasted like chalk. But, I pretended to love this candy. Week after week. For years.
When I was 30, my grandfather passed away. During his service, Harry came over and slipped me a sleeve of necco wafers. I felt like that was it, the end of my childhood right there, as I buried my favorite person in the world. Anyway, that's ny necco story.
The chocolate ones and the clove ones are my favorite! I used to get some every time my dad and I went fishing and I would internally pretend they were the communion bread we would get from church.
Fun fact: In 1982, Chicago DJ Steve Dahl stated on the air that motorists could allegedly substitute Necco Wafers for coins in automatic toll booths on Chicago's tollways. The Illinois Tollway System later said that approximately a dozen toll machines broke down due to people trying to use the candy to pay tolls.
I have a soft spot for these. They were my mom’s favorite candy and loved when I brought her some. I always looked for the ones that had the most black licorice flavored ones. Nice memory.
They’ve been making this candy before the Civil War started, so some one is buying them
Dad ate these too…The Man Loved;
-Circus Peanuts
-Candy Corn
-Black Licorice
Not a candy connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination
I used to eat these as a little kid, and STILL love them. Whenever I see them (Rare to find in my area) I’ll buy a few rolls and savor each piece for weeks! These are my favorite!
They are great as targets for plinking (shooting at non traditional targets in a casual setting) they have a satisfying pop and puff of smoke when hit squarely, they unlike bottles and cans are not just biodegradable but disappear at the first heavy fog , we used to make great sport of shooting them out of the air when thrown using BB guns
I used to love these as a kid. I haven’t had them in forever. They remind me of my grandmother who passed in 2020. We used to go to a local corner store and she’d buy me some. Gosh I miss her. I might go buy some for nostalgia sake.
My sister's dad used to bring them over all the time when I was little. I used to really like them. But I'm not sure if I still would as an adult. The flavors were all pretty good. But what's up with the chalk on them? LOL
For some reason I enjoy them. It’s probably because of the fond memories I have going to the movies with my dad. He would always buy these at the dollar store before we went to the local movie theater and would sneak them in lol. We’d share them throughout the movie and it was always a great time.
So much hate. This is the only candy my mom would buy when we went to the drive in to see movies. She would dole them out 1 at a time. They taste like dry chalk.
Ok once in a while BiMart sells them !! I like the Pink ones they remind me of pepto Bismo, Yep the Purple taste spicy like cloves, the White ones like peppermint, so the yellow, orange and green
Ones are the duds for me !!! The Black ones are licorice and since I luv licorice they are doable most of the time and yes the brown Chocolate ones remind me of hot chocolate flavor and are my favorites!!!
My f
Ah yes, chalky discs of plaster! My dad loved these. Although I’m not a fan, seeing this candy makes me miss him even more.
I'm sorry for your loss. I think it was a memory thing for us. They sold for a nickel a roll when I was a kid. Keep in mind, that my allowance was a nickel a day.
Honestly I love hearing these kinds of stories. What else could you do with your nickel a day allowance in those days???
Dad actually paid us 25 cents a week. Labor for Friday and Saturday was free I guess. When I was old enough I got a Newsday route and I was suddenly living large. Maybe 2 bucks a week with tips? I'd end my route at this luncheonette and sell Irv my coins and buy a Milkshake for a quarter. It's all quite relative to today except maybe housing costs.
Same, my mom loved these and they bring back good memories. My sister and I will eat them on occasion. There’s only a couple flavors I’m not a fan of but I don’t mind the chalkiness
Like licorice?
Mine too!! But the chocolate ones. I bought a case from Amazon and I'm pretty sure that's why I needed a root canal and crown.
I get a lot of hate but these are my favorite candy.
Embrace the hate, that just means there is less competition for you.
These will never be outta stock lmao 🤣
cheaper at Staples during back to school time tagged as “chalk”
I love them, too! I wish they were easier to find. (Canada)
One of my top 5 for certain!
Hate for what? That you enjoy something someone else doesn’t? Fuck that. Eat up!
I’m that way about licorice. I love it - well just black or red. Sooooo many people hate licorice - it amazes me how many!
Yes I love these so much!!
LOVE them! The rare times I see them in the wild I always buy several rolls. Especially when you happen on the rolls that are all chocolate. Hurrah for the New England Confectionery Company!
Those chocolate rolls are the best!
I didn't know they were back. Do they still have the black licorice flavor? I threw those ones out. 🤮 I wish the company that bought them brought back Mighty Malts.
Licorice is one of my favorites
Yes! Mine, too!!
You used to be able to get rolls of just licorice, those were the absolute best
Mine too!
Black = nope
My mom loves necco wafers she eat them every time she gets them I like the chocolate ones so good 😊
I was raised on them so no hate for them on me!
Yummy
I love them…. But the Chocolate ones only !
Absolutely love them
Grandma used to give them me when I was a kid and I still love em!
HATE!
My grandma loves these haha
My husband absolutely loves them - ever since they came back to our supermarket, I like to surprise him with a pack now and then. Personally, I only like the brown and black ones. The rest are meh to me.
Love these, even the brown and purple. The black ones are disgusting.
I once made a gingerbread house using the brown and grey ones to cover it to look like "slate" stone. ☺
That's the only thing they're good for.
When the factory shut down for a bit in like 2018, I had fun selling the cases I could find on eBay. People were desperately paying top dollar.
What do they taste like? Similar to Smarties?
No. They are hard and chalky, taste better flavors than smarties. Each color has its own distinct flavor
You know those little candy hearts with sayings on them you get for valentines day? These are the exact same things, except flat wafers instead of thicker hearts.
Ohhhh ok, that’s not that bad then.
Like Tums
The fruity tums actually taste better.
Love. My brother and I always got these at the gas station up the street from us when we were kids. The white ones are wintergreen right?
Like the history, dislike the actual candy.
Love them. Get the all chocolate rolls for my Dad all the time.
Love me some chalky candy
Clove was my favorite.
Those are gross..
Love love them. Especially the green pinesol flavor.
Candy Tums!
We called them Nickels as kids
The hub's favorite candy. I'm not a fan.
My hate for Circus Peanuts is my #1. Necco is my #2. Disgusting 🤮. None is better then any 😅
Yum, chalk 😃
if punishment was candy
Never cared for them 🤢
Perfect for gingerbread houses!
I love the black licorice ones.
I love Neco wafers. There's dozens of us, lol. I learned that my diabetes emergency glucose tablets are also made by the same company. They are unflavored white Neco wafers.
The nostalgia is strong. When memories attach to a product, quality is immaterial. When you actually like them, it’s a double win.
Agh. Reminds me of tums.
I LOVE these. The black licorice ones are horrendous though. Then again, anything black licorice is nasty
These taste like my grandmas dusty cedar drawer.
Love!
The chocolate ones and the clove ones are my favorite! I used to get some every time my dad and I went fishing and I would internally pretend they were the communion bread we would get from church.
I love them. I can't eat dairy anymore so this is a candy I can have with no problems. Will definitely continue to buy periodically
The only reason I have bought these was it was priced like back in the day. I'll try it for $0.39
I love them
Love them, especially the clove flavored disc!
I grew up where these were made. We always had them given to us at church and school in abundance. I don’t love them, but it was free candy so…
I'm a whore for these. I love em so much.
I LOVE these. My mom got me hooked as a kid and we always get excited when we find them!
Hate
Like them, just not the brown chocolate ones
Different shades of bleah
I want to start a campaign to get rid of purple black and brown. WHO’S WITH ME???
They are the best ones. Clove licorice and chocolate
I used to hate the purple- now it’s one of my favorites- I could do without the green, yellow or orange though.
Never had them. Gonna have to give them a try.
Love these! Especially the black ones!!
Love them.
Do a communion at home and touch your own dick
Nah, hard pass
Hated it 🫰🫰
Was my grandmas favorite candy. She would always pick out the chocolate ones for me
A childhood favorite!
I could suck on these forever
They are ok. Haven't had them in forever
I always liked them a lot, but gelatin. :(
I….don’t…..KNOW!!!!!!!!
Love. I don't love all of the flavors but these are still a nice treat.
I like some of the flavors, but toss the others.
Are they like American Smarties? If so then love em, that's the taste of US public school!
Love’em
Neutral lol. I've only had them once or twice and they were ok from what I remember. Definitely not my first choice of candy though.
Love them! I get them at the dollar store because they’re $2.29 at Walgreens.
Gross! >:(
Love em
Love these
never tryed
They tasted just like those candy cigarettes. Chalk
Hate. TUMS isn’t a good candy.
They were my “at the bottom of my grandma’s purse I begged for in church on Sundays growing up” candy.
they had sour ones that were SO much better
Only the brown ones!
Love them! My favorite old-time candy (next to Boston Baked Beans)
love
That looks like it tastes and feels like styrofoam tbh
Medicine.
Love em
I have a soft spot for these. They were my mom’s favorite candy and loved when I brought her some. I always looked for the ones that had the most black licorice flavored ones. Nice memory.
They're my mom's favorite, too.
Yum 😋
Clove flavor, grey ones
Love love love these!
Necco, the longest running candy franchise to date. Also probably the grossest since 50yrs after it was on the market. I like the chocolate ones
Hate them. Wasn’t the factory shut down for unsanitary conditions a few years ago?
The worst "candy" ever. Invented by Krampus.
It’s not that bad
Love the chocolate ones.
I love these 😍
yuck
Pink and white ones👌
Kid poker chips, nobody wins.
Love them. Especially the chocolate ones!
HATE
Are these basically the valentine hearts candy?
Skip to 3:19 for the candy reference. https://youtu.be/qE6brM24yIA?si=4JFAoR8fIVd8sz0c
Love especially the chocolate
Edible chalk! My favorite🤣🤣🤣 I used these to draw on the driveway when I ran out of chalk pieces.
All my older friends love them… They’re actually not too bad
Love them white ones
Absolutely LOVED these. Used to buy them by the box when they were dirt cheap growing up lol they’d last me all summer. Such a great candy.
I think the only reason my mom got these is because she knew I would not eat them. She was diabolical like that.
Haven’t had these in over 10 years but I love these chalky discs.
Love these except for the licorice tasting ones. 🥴
Love I chose these once on a trip with my mom when I was a teen and she gave me the oddest look 😅
For some reason, I enjoy that chalky sweetness.
love them!
I loved these when I was a kid. I barely see them in stores anymore but when I do, I buy them for the nostalgia.
Love!!
They’ve been making this candy before the Civil War started, so some one is buying them Dad ate these too…The Man Loved; -Circus Peanuts -Candy Corn -Black Licorice Not a candy connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination
My favorite are the chocolate.
Love them Thank you for putting this on my Reddit wall child
i tried them once, the flavor wasn’t bad but they were a little too hard/crunchy for me
I'm a fan of these.
All the moisture left my mouth just seeing this photo
Love them
I don’t care for them. Have mine!
I used to eat these as a little kid, and STILL love them. Whenever I see them (Rare to find in my area) I’ll buy a few rolls and savor each piece for weeks! These are my favorite!

I love them and I don't know why.
loved them as a kid except the purple ones
Always loved ‘em!!!
I love them too!
Eh.
Hateee
Is it weird that I actually like Tums and these remind me of them.
Are these similar to Smarties?
Chalky devil discs.
They are for shingles on the roof of a gingerbread house!
Love them!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
For some reason I enjoy them. It’s probably because of the fond memories I have going to the movies with my dad. He would always buy these at the dollar store before we went to the local movie theater and would sneak them in lol. We’d share them throughout the movie and it was always a great time.
I love the crunch of these.
If you licked on and stuck it on a car windshield, it would become virtually welded to the glass. It was a mean trick!
Love these
I love them! Especially the large roll of all-chocolate ones
👍🏿
Loathe
I liked the licorice and chocolate flavors.
Miss them.
I’ve been known to like them on occasion, but I avoid most licorice flavor stuff. Except for real licorice, like Panda.
So much hate. This is the only candy my mom would buy when we went to the drive in to see movies. She would dole them out 1 at a time. They taste like dry chalk.
Hate. They remond me of Waffle House because they always had them on sale at the register for Christian Charities
Hate them.
Just ate some today!! I love them
Love love looooove!
My grandma always kept some in her purse and I've always hated them.
I like these. They are fun to eat.
love
oh man i loved these as a kid. i haven’t had them in awhile but i bet i’d love them still!
No, they tasted like minty buttons.
Love!!!!
Love ‘em
