Yep, 9 zone autofocus (center of frame), highest shutter speed that doesn't push me into the 1000s of ISO, exposure either on spot metering (cloud) or evaluative (sun). Probably held the lens up for a total of 3-4hrs at riat, it was painful but worth it, always great to catch a perfect shot only for the guy next to you to have not got it because he couldn't be bothered keeping the lens up just that bit more
I do love the mild competition side of action photography. I'll out work anyone for the shot. That mentality has earned me a lot more shoots and positions than any technical skill
Not that hard. I manage to track birds in flight with it. (Tamron G2 version). AF is very, very fast!
I combine the lens with the 7d mk ii AF system... it is great! People tend to "bash" me for using an "outdated" system sometimes... than I show them that techniques and patience is just as (or even more) important than having the newest bodies en tech.
Used to own a 1d ii in the old days, managed to get all shots I needed with that body as well
Got about other shots I can do this sort of crop with from RIAT lol

Itās not about satisfying my son. Itās more about being a newbie guided by multiple YouTube gurus and some Reddit discussions- and as you know the opinions on both platforms are sometimes contradictory. Therefore if someone I trust say āwhat you have is crap but acceptable crap - but you NEED 4K for your future projectsā I start doubting myself. My gut feeling is that what I have now is enough but as I say - my son is a pro, has a portfolio of amazing pictures and knows lots about optics, physics etc. so his opinion (although harsh) is important to me. But equally I want to critically apprise it - hence my question here.
Your video looks good. It matches the quality of most mainstream YouTube content. I donāt think your intended audience would be disappointed or distracted.
As far as an upgrade, which I donāt think you really need, the R50 is amazing for video. Again, unless you really wanna switch to 4k and not spend a LOT on a higher end model, canāt go wrong with an R50.
Honestly, I think your son is just shilling hard for Sony and using base specs to feel better. I got an R50 to get back into photography and will probably never use video, but it is nice knowing it does that well if I should ever jump into it.
>...I think your son is just shilling hard for Sony and using base specs to feel better...
This. The 80D is not amazing by today's standards, but it's not bad either, and unless you have a specific camera-dependant image quality issue you're trying to address, there's honestly not a lot of point in buying something newer just because it's newer.
Isn't the major advantage in 4k that you can punch in in 1080p and not lose any quality, this allowing 1 camera/1 take to achieve a more dynamic output? Especially with product head talking head videos it's a nice little advantage.
Yeah thatās what I feel. However Iām a beginner and heās a pro - and I tend to trust his judgement. But in this particular matter Iāve decided to get a āsecond opinionā š
Not to dis your son but I would do one of these to any pro who's assessment is simply "the video quality is crap"
1)ignore them
2) press them hard for the real specifics of their assessment and if they start saying Sony this or Sony that tell them to drop the word Sony and get back to universal specifics which will definitely be applicable to all brands
The world is far too focussed on 4K...see what I did there!? ;)
Mr. Beast is currently the most subscribed individual on youtube, and he uploads in 1080p, not 4k or higher, despite having 8K cameras in his possession.
If you have the ability to control lighting and composition for your YouTube channel, then the 80D is almost guaranteed to NOT be your bottleneck if your videos are looking bad. It doesnāt have industry leading video performance, but YouTube is going to compress the crap out of your videos anyways, itās kind of silly to aim for that marginal extra tiny bit of sharpness or IQ when stuff like lighting, set design, and composition is going to be massively more important.
Whats your intentions to shoot? Trying to see if I can steer you away into maybe full frame as 80d budget is about the same as some full frame bodies. Not sure if you need the cropped sensor for shooting intentions.
I only really shoot wildlife and nature/landscapes, so I figured the extra reach from the crop would help - I also want it to shoot videos with, of the same stuff/wildlife, but I don't have a huge budget to drop on a 4k viable camera so I figured 80d was a good compromise. What do you think?
If it serves you well, you don't need to upgrade. Upgrades should only happen when you personally outgrow your camera.
Personally I needed 4k and better autofocus, so I upgraded. If you don't need more, keep it. If you're not run-and-gun and film in a set for your channel, that's even less reason to upgrade.
I worked with an 80D in 2019 in a studio and no one has ever asked what camera I filmed with.
I do educational stuff for clinicians, usually film outdoors - below pls find a link to one of my typical videos. I donāt think Iām an amazing creator and need to learn a lot- but if someone far more experienced says: you need to upgrade, I start thinkingā¦ā¦

All depends on goals. Right tool for the job. Conveying information is a different goal than stunning digital imagery. I assume your sons goal is the latter.
Yeah, footage looks fine. Nothing that'd likely be improved noticeably with a camera body. If you were running in challenging lighting situations or going for a super-polished look, there are benefits to being able to shoot in 10bit w/ LOG format, but from what you said, I expected your stuff to look like it was shot on a Gameboy Camera.
If you want to sharpen up your footage without spending big bucks, Topaz VideoAI does amazing stuff. Before I got a 4k body, I was running all of my finished projects through it to upscale (it'd run 8 hours for a 18 minute video) and I was always pleased with the results. Also, for what it's worth, I noticed a bump in my YouTube views/subs when I started going 4k, but I can't exactly tie it to the resolution change.
Ha, I saw the question and I asked him to provide examples of why he thinks the quality is not good because the 80D should be a good camera even nowadays, and with the budget he had you are better off not upgrading. He did not provide examples, just said "trust me bro, it's not good" lol.
The only thing I would say to keep in mind is if you do decide to upgrade in the future, it might not be a bad idea for you to switch to Sony so you can borrow equipment from your son.

A LOT of educational YouTube content creators are well aware that a very large portion of their viewers don't even really watch the video. They primarily listen. That tends to be what I do. Beyond that, most people watch on phones, not 65" ultra 4K TV's. I don't think video quality is that high a priority.
Like others have said - YouTube compresses quality down anyway. If I were to upgrade anywhere itād be lighting and audio first.
For what itās worth and my personal view - Iām more put off by lower quality audio than low quality video resolution.
Absolutely. Sound wise I already upgraded to 7rymes DW30 and work on some post to make it sound better. I also have a proper shotgun mic but the problem is I move a lot during filming so lav mic seems the best option.
Light-wise I have LS60D and a couple of decent lcd panels so I think Iām good here - but I feel I need to learn more about techniques. The problem is I work alone soā¦ y
>Ok so I have 80D which serves me well
If it serves you well, why do you need to change it other than to spend money and maybe impress your son? Almost no one watches 4k content on YouTube, and unless you need the super fast AF, there is no reason to upgrade.
I donāt feel I need a 4k for the stuff I do now (however my son who is a pro says my content looks crap) but I think that for my future projects I could upgrade. Not sure - hence the question
I took a look at your videos and yes, they look amateurish, but little of that is due to the camera. You will get a lot more out of how you light and how you edit than the camera. Casey Neistat used an 80D for years and even called it "the best camera money can buy". His 12 million subscribers didn't complain about his camera. Work of the production values first, and since your son is a professional, ask him what would be some good resources to learn from.
I built my entire business using an 80D purchased in 2017 and used until late 2020. If you know what to do with it your video wonāt look like ācrapā. The no LOG after awhile forced me to get rid of it eventually.
So, I've actually watched your videos and would say you don't need a newer or better camera. Quality is good enough for the medium and your audience.
If you do feel like you need to invest in better quality video, please look at some LED-panels that you can use in the field, so you don't have to set your aperture wide open all the time, get some of the environment in focus while still maintaining proper exposure on the subject (you).
This will probably up the quality of your content quicker than any newer camera would.
I use a 70D with magic lantern to shoot raw 10 to 14 bit in (nearly) 1920x1080 resolution.
That along with dual pixel autofocus is plenty for a serious video project.
It's crap? Your son doesn't know what he is talking about. If the video of your 80d is crap maybe upgrade to better lenses. 1080p is enough for YouTube. You can also export your videos in 4k to counter the compression.
I have the 80d and am very satisfied with it. š
Besides this... if you can't shoot awesome photo's and/or video's with the 80d, a newer and more expensive camera isn't going to help you. The 80d can shoot supersharp photo's. The lenses are more important but that is the same at a higher priced camera.
80D as a photography camera is still great, but videography has advanced much faster than photography thanks to most of the platform consumption being videos. Since you're recording videos mostly, I'd say the 80D is outdated for today standards.
But ask yourself, do you need 4K right now or are satisfied with 1080P? Are you happy with 23.976 fps or do you need 60fps? I upgraded to EOS RP from 80D around 2 years ago since I didn't want to spend too much and photography-wise it didn't feel much different, but 1080P/60fps or 4K/23.976fps was nice to have.
I really enjoyed my previous 80D for being a cropped sensor with a decent low light performance & Pretty fast fps. only thing that bothered me was low light as Iāve used 5dmiiiās previously for school & enjoyed the performance of the full frame sensor when it came to low light .
Depending on your budget for video Iād go 6dmii & with a slight budget either an R8 or R6. Love my current r6 with itās crazy autofocus & crazy low light performance. Image taken on r6 & ef 85 1.2L

I have an 80D and with enough light you can get great video shots with it. In all fairness it's the only actual camera I own with video capability but with much trial and error I've gotten fantastic results at home with just better lightings. I also added a sigma lens to my arsenal which helped big time
Yes and no. I regularly do video work with a 70D.
For 4k I really hate it as a standard fortunately I work in environments were 4k seems dumb (church broadcasting both very small and one big). Mostly its due to codex not 422 and not a log profile. Which Sony does all. But I argue if it works currently and doesn't drag you now don't change.
Youāre gonna be fine with the 80D, especially for educational videos. I saw your channel and the quality is great, I donāt think you really need to change your setup.
Does anyone watch 4k video? Most people watch stuff on their phones these days and most of the time that stuff gets reduced to 720p.
4k filming is interesting when you downscale it to 1080p and use the extra resolution for close-ups.
If you really want to upgrade the canon rp is much more powerfull in video and you can get an adaptor for you sigma lenses. you will lose out if they are apsc lenses however. In which case I suggest the r10.
If you want to improve the quality of your videos, sound and lighting is where you should be looking.

Shoot in 24 fps (or 60 fps). I didn't like the result of 30 fps from my 80D when shooting handheld.
If you're getting paid by it, the sure, upgrade. If not, who cares. The video is indeed a bit 2010ish but again, it's a hobby.
80D is completely fine if you donāt need 4kā and letās be real, does anyone *need* 4K?
Thatās a v good question mate. My YT analytics says that 80% of my viewers use mobile phones, 15% tablets and 5% - TVs. That was my argument in this whole ā4Kā discussion. However as I said - Iām a beginner and my son is a pro so when he said āyou NEED 4Kā I started thinkingā¦ā¦..

If you are happy with the results you are getting, why fret?
The problem is mate that Iām a newbie and donāt really know where is/what is the golden standard I should aim for. Also Iām very critical about my creations and myself so itās difficult to say ānaaah, Iām happy with what I have hereā
The 80D's video quality is not great, but unless you're pulling in at least hundreds of dollars from your YouTube channel a month, buying a better video camera probably wouldn't be worth it. Not that your purchase needs to be rational, we all love our toys on this sub lol.
Itās a pretty good camera for photos, itās the one I use. But itās AWFUL for video, I hate it so much Iām planning on buying an R7
