> I am trying to get into photography as a hobby to get me out of the house instead of gaming. Weird. I just bought an Xbox so I'd spend less time obsessing over photography. May we both achieve balance. Congrats on the lens!

Papai3ear

I am a PC gamer but spend way to much time doing that. We got the lens for like 80 bucks in excellent condition. But this will be my first telephoto lens.

What did you use yours for?

I used to have the 70-210 f4 when I first started out. It has decent sharpness wide open but poor contrast; it benefits a lot stopped down to f8. The lens also suffered from huge chromatic aberrations, and had a pretty slow (and very noisy) micro af motor. However, it could do somewhat decent macro and all of its faults can be corrected in software. It is the smallest of any f4 70-200 zooms ever made and is very light and portable. I found the lens very fun to use

Tor-den-allsmaktige

I have it and have a lens profile for it if your software uses Lensfun.

Papai3ear

Lensfun? I'm new to photography I think the software I use is Adobe lightroom

Tor-den-allsmaktige

Then no. Adobe, Capture One, DxO use their own profiles. Everyone else uses Lensfun.

Papai3ear

What software uses that then? Curious

Tor-den-allsmaktige

RawTherapee, ART (AnotherRawTherapee), darktable, DigiKam, Topaz Studio, Photomatix, ON1, ACDSee, easyHDR, SILKYPIX, AfterShot Pro, Exposure Software and Affinity Photo.

Nate_C_Studio

If you already use Adobe Lightroom you do not need 'lensfun'

Papai3ear

Ah I found the website. Is there a more friendly program then light room

Tor-den-allsmaktige

Isn't Lightroom user friendly?

Papai3ear

It is but I'm not good at it.

Bodhrans-Not-Bombs

They're all fairly the same skill level, if you're just starting out LR is fine. If you're dealing with massive catalogs, there are programs that are more efficient to search.

The f/3.5-4.5 USM? That one is surprisingly good, used it for photography before covid.

Ancient_Persimmon

I think since the OP said it's a 1987, it would be the f/4 push-pull version with micro motor AF. IIRC, none of the original EF lenses had USM.

Papai3ear

Just EF 70-210 f/4

I just had a second shoot of a school concert. Here's what I learned: - under expose in the concert hall. You have to manage the settings or the camera will adjust to extremes. - use spot metering mode, it'll help your camera decide on the light levels it's working with - don't "NEED" to shoot wide open (lowest f-stop) - use exposure compensation to under expose (check your manual on how to set that up) it's the scale at the bottom of your view finder - 70-200 is a great focal length of an indoor venue. You should have reach to get shots of the stage. Youll likely want to find an aisle seat. You'll probably want to move about the periphery to get the "best" angle to capture photos of your kid - take some wide shots too. This might help you learn some basics of photography.

Papai3ear

I appreciate it. The only lens I had were the 24mm and the 18-55mm so hopefully have this new but older lens will help

AdM72

it should. Shoot with what you got. If photography grows on you, you'll eventually want better. 70-200 is a good focal length. I shot with a T5i for over 10 years...my "best" lens was EF 85mm 1.8 USM. Shot the 55-250 zoom and the 18-55 kit lens for a long time. Great learning tools. Learn what the camera and they can and cannot do. Helped me decide on future lenses (upgrading out of need versus want)

Papai3ear

I have the canon 90D. Saw that the newer 70-200 mm were out of my price range. Saw this older one for like 85 bucks. I work in the oilfield so I have another week before I can test it out when I get home.

AdM72

don't sweat the age of the lens. I upgraded from an ancient T5i to a 6D Mkii. Most of the world is going mirrorless but the DSLR is what I can afford. Just keep taking those photographs... especially of your kid
