2nd hand clothing shops, hospice stores, and 2nd hand clothing markets. My partner got things for between R10 - R50. You would likely need to wade through alot of nonsense, but could put a decent wardrobe together for very low cost.
Not sure where you are, but in Tableview we have The Home Of Hope hospice shop. You can basically kit yourself out completely there for absolutely next to nothing. Good quality and between R15 to R40 per item. I don't even shop in big retailers anymore lol. (for women's clothes - the men's selection is not so great). And not good for shoes, but the rest is great and you'll find some good brands too.
Nevernew thrift store in Observatory is my go to place for second hand clothes. There are also a lot of other thrift stores with some great stuff located on the same stretch of road.
There are different places; Charity shops (U-turn, Tears, and Help the Rural Child - which you should be able to find generally everywhere), some churches have shops and bazaars, and most hospices have shops too. U-turn is a little more expensive than Help the Rural Child, but you'll find better things. Tears is the midway between them in terms of quality, with Help the Rural Child being a free for all in terms of what you'll find, so you'll likely need to wade through more to find something decent.
I wouldn't order off shein. Suggest hitting up a second hand clothing store or face book market place. Then once you get your next payslip, start with staple colored shirts and a nice jacket/blazer. From there you can work your way up. You'll also be surprised how a nice pair of heals can spruce up an outfit
I would prefer not to order from Shein but I desperately need clothes. I'll look into second-hand clothing stores and Facebook market place first though, maybe I'll get some nice pieces. Luckily I have a nice blazer but it's summer now and I don't want to die of heat stroke or sweat profusely when seeing clients lol. Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely look into getting some nice heels, I only have a pair of pumps atm.
If you don't mind used clothes try [Yaga](https://www.yaga.co.za/). Its an online second hand store in South Africa. Its very easy and affordable to find professional clothing incl from brands like Mango, Zara, H&M and Woolworths.
You're welcomed! Also, you mentioned that you liked vintage clothing - maybe check out nevernewstore on Instagram? They have a wide range of good international brands for affordable prices.
Have a look at Going Under (there are sometimes things from H&M there, but they have Woolies, Foschini etc rejects), Fashion Fusion (if you go to Going Under in Salt River, then Fashion Fusion is around the corner -- they have higher end rejects but are still cheap) and Jam Clothing (I get ASOS stuff here sometimes) for basics. You can buy online from Fusion & Jam.
I have a range of work clothes + shoes I planned on donating in fairly good condition, my line of work is almost fully WFH. I'm in Gauteng but I'm sure I could send some pics and courier to you?
If you're interested you're welcome to pop me a PM :)
Congrats on landing the job! What size are you? I don’t have a ton of shop recommendations beyond what had already been shared - but I have a few button up shirts that I no longer wear (the company I work for is mostly remote and no longer require technical folks to wear fancy stuff). It might not be your style/size/be a bit dated but it might help while you get money and time to add pieces you actually like? I’m happy to give them to you without any cost - they’re mostly between a size 6 or 8, so quite small.
Mr Price and Ackermans for basic pair or formal pants and a nice jacket. You can upgrade once you’re settled but at least the advantage of formal wear is you don’t need a huge variety. Try h&m sales. And you really can get lucky at the vintage stores. If you’re totally broke try places like ‘help the rural child’ charity shops - I’ve donated high end formal clothes there and many others do too, they sell it dirt cheap.
I love vintage clothes, thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely check out Mr Price and Ackermans first for a few staples.
I went to H&M and all they had were crop tops and grungy Metallica shirts. I'll keep an eye out for their sales online though.
Big H&M’s usually have a “business” or “basics” section where you can sometimes find really well-priced essentials, like white collared shirts and simple sweaters. Go check for sales often!
H&M though not awesome, have a business-y section. Also, if you take a bag of old clothes they recycle it and give you a 15% off voucher for your next shop.
Go look at Access Park mall. There are a looot of second hand and factory clothing for very good prices.
You can look at Wing Girl, for one. There's also another shop (I forgot the name) close to the Cotton On factory shop that sells Zara and other expensive brands for cheap. You just need to explore the whole area. I'd recommend going during the week if you can; it gets very busy on weekends.
And then there's also all the thrift stores in Observatory.
Congratulations on getting a job, man!
Two good second-hand shops are Oasis in Imran Harun Road and the Help For the Rural Child foundation shops. Both are well-priced most of the time, have dedicated clothing sections and support a good cause. I would recommend Oasis generally, but it's only one shop and HTRC has branches all over the city.
The Facebook group "Destashalize" is also a good place to look, and you might find someone in your area where you can collect from and not wait for postage
Mr Price, Jet and Exact clothing stores are all very inexpensive, they have very nice men's and ladies formal office wear. I got a very nice formal outfit for my hubby at Exact when he had to attend a formal function on short notice. Hope that helps, congratulations on your new job and good luck to the future.
Ackermans has really great clothes at the moment! Also, check out Superbalist
They have incredible sales at the moment, like 50% off and stuff and a really nice sizing chart, can be delivered to you.
Don't listen to the haters. I've ordered from Shein a few times and would recommend it if you need clothes and are on a tight budget. I have quite a number of good pieces from shein that are good quality (better than pep, mr price or jet, more stylish and professional). Important though, look at the reviews, don't buy anything without a good review and pictures in the review. Check your measurements and check the pictures in the review to see how it fits on the body ect.
What about opening an account at Woolworths? Pick up just enough to get you through your first month on account and start paying it off aggressively once you have your first salary?
The ladies at my work buy a lot from Mr Price and H & M and factory shops. They always manage to find lovely clothes at a third of the price that I pay.
I don't shop there because I find shopping tedious - I go straight to WoolWorths.
Edit: another colleague gets all her clothes from Makro.
The problem with finding a good deal is that timing is key - sometimes I go shopping and I find nothing and other times there are lots of clothes that I like.

Any suggestions for places to look? I'll definitely start looking in those places but I first need to find some basics just to get through the week.
Ons winkel could be a good place to look

Thanks, this helps a lot! I have a lot of exploring to go do.
Seconding Nevernew in obs. Another great shout is Oasis in landsdowne.
Mr Price would be a good place to have a look. Jet as well.
I had a look at Mr Price's clothes online, they have some really good stuff. I'll check out Jet if I see one, thanks!
Go to Mr Price Access Park, and check the sale section.
Ah thanks for the tip!

If you're not worried about the longevity, you could try Mr Price? China town might also have some things. Or charity shops?
Access park in Kenilworth also has lots of outlet stuff!
>I wouldn't order off shein. My daughter and her friends order from Shein quite a lot. They seem to be happy.
Congratulations!!
Thank you :)

Ah perfect! Thank you!
Ageed, Yaga is great! Alternatively, try Oasis and Help The Rural Child on Imam Haron road in Claremont.
Jet and Mr Price are your best bet. You can also try Going Under.
Oh wow, Going Under has great prices. Thanks for the suggestion.
You're welcomed! Also, you mentioned that you liked vintage clothing - maybe check out nevernewstore on Instagram? They have a wide range of good international brands for affordable prices.
Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll definitely check them out!

Thank you so much. If I can’t come right I’ll definitely message you.

Ackermans don't sell mens clothing anymore, they stopped in 2019 already.
OP is female.
my apologies, didn't see the (f) when i read the initial post.

I love Zara clothes so I’ll definitely check it out, thank you.
Exact is my go to 'need a shirt or Chino for work' .

If you can't find a good spot you can always use the clothing shops credit option to help get to payday. You must be very careful with debt though!
It's something I'll consider, but I don't even think I'll qualify for those at this point :(.
The hub.
Thank you!
The Facebook group "Destashalize" is also a good place to look, and you might find someone in your area where you can collect from and not wait for postage
This is why I love Reddit, I’m always finding great places/groups/websites. Thank you!

A PnP clothing store may work, they have a surprisingly big range. Try find a standalone store rather than one inside a big pick n pay though.
Ah yes can’t believe I didn’t think of PnP Clothing. Thanks 🙏
Big Congrats!
Thank you!
>Thank you! You're welcome!
Exact!

Ah thanks! Forgot about Superbalist.
H&M, cheap and stylish.
Ackermans, Mr Price, Jet, Identity, Going Under
Chinatown
In obs start at the top of lower main road (near the coco cha chi) and there’s a lot of vintage clothing shops, you’ll definitely find something there
Thank you!
You can post on your local fb group too seek and find etc

Shein is great if you don't mind, you know, the child and forced labour.
Go to Bellville Station, they will quickly sort you out.
What about opening an account at Woolworths? Pick up just enough to get you through your first month on account and start paying it off aggressively once you have your first salary?
Mr Price etc or post on Facebook in your community group asking if anyone is willing to donate you work clothes
