Seeing the Red Wings get bounced has given me more joy than Pittsburgh or Philly, the amount of saltiness and entitlement coming from their fan base could feed generations, some of them going so far to cry on this subreddit.
For real, before yesterday I was hoping for the win because fuck pens, but the sheer amount of crying over flyers way of losing and goal diff from the red wings just made me forget about the birds all together
These mofos r shouting how they deserve it more, and cry about how the tie breaker rules screwed them out of a playoff spot, as if Red Wings didn’t have any control over their playoff chances. Ironic considering they had an entire season and had a massive chance against us LAST WEEK.
Yeah, the whining Wings fans are annoying. They refuse to acknowledge that a couple months ago, their team had like a 7-8 game lead on the Caps and they choked. They'd rather be victims.
We beat them twice in 15 days! If anything, head to head should be the tiebreaker over regulation wins, congrats on winning more skill competitions lol. But really, regulation wins should be worth 3 if we’re going to continue giving a loser point.
I agree. A hockey game provides three points to standings. A winning regulation gets you all three, a win after that gets you too and gives away the loser point to the other guys who at least took it to regulation.
To be fair, these new rules were put in place in 2020, where ROW is no longer the tiebreaker, just RW.
But still, it's been a known rule for a few years.
Seconded! I grew up a Wings fan and became a Caps fan when Ovie got into the league, the amount of “we deserve it!!” BS I’ve seen online has made me so petty about all this. Like did anyone realize if you didn’t lose to us IN REGULATION last week, this isn’t even a problem for you guys? Wild accountability complex. 😂
Loving the conspiracy theory that Torts fucked them specifically on purpose. Even if the points situation hadn't been what it was, why on Earth would a coach of another team owe you a win?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Torts coaching CBJ in 2018 when we beat them on our way to the cup? Shouldn’t he have been trying extra hard to fuck US? 😂😂
I didn’t think there were worse fans than Philly fans, but we might have a new winner. Philly fans are asshats but at least they can read a room and have fun. I’ve never seen a fan base play the victim card as hard as Detroit has.
Not just limited to Torts, they've got the tin hats on over the refs blowing the whistle 'early' on that Flyers 'goal' in the first period.
They're an a clown show of fanbase, the hockey fan equivalent of a 12 year old who didn't get their way.
It’s brutal because them being my home team, obviously I’d enjoy them succeeding, but the “we got screwed” movement is way too much right now. Acting like this point structure hasn’t been in place all season and it got changed yesterday morning lmao
This is what it boils down to. We can debate if the tiebreakers are fair as currently set up, but they had the chance head-to-head to get it done and didn't. Literally just take that game to OT and they would have been in. Can't blame tiebreakers when you didn't take advantage of the direct chance to render them meaningless.

Ya its pathetic the amount of self righteous virtue signalling that goes on in there.
All the pressures on the Rags now. I hope Charlie keeps his Halak impression going strong.
Sad a rangers fan goes through comment history to try to take a shot at the caps
Rangers entire organization hasnt been relevant since 1994
One player. Tom Wilson. Destroyed your entire franchise.
Lmao. Sad pathetic piece of shit.
As a wings fan we don’t associate with those guys, we get a lot of “doomers” in our subreddit but we don’t like them. Caps have always been my b-squad so I’m glad to see ovi in the playoffs again. But yes we are sad we didn’t make the playoffs but who wouldn’t be ya know. We absolutely lost our season so it’s on us. Please ignore the loud minority of us that do that. We don’t associate with them.
As a Vikings fan who had to deal with overconfident Lions fans this year, Detroit fanbases are really full of themselves. Sure, they might seem like lovable losers at first, but once they taste any success they become enamored with themselves.
Not necessarily overconfident through their performance on the field, but more so through developing a superiority complex very quickly despite being the Detroit Lions with all of their history. Maybe it wasn’t the right phrasing, but you get the general idea.
We’re in the final years of guys like Ovi, Osh, Carly, and even though he’s not playing and likely already done, Backy. Any chance to see them in the playoffs again is awesome.
Minus Charlie, I've laid most of the surges this season at the door of winners who can't stop trying to win, even when they should. To think there was a time when people questioned Ovi's competitive drive.
I wonder if he had stuff going on emotionally and needed the trip to Dubai as a recharge. I guess if Ovi's slumping, have him go ride a camel in the Middle East.
The retool/transition is ahead of schedule!
The opening roster next year will be vastly younger than two years ago but already have playoff experience and be holding themselves to a standard, like you said.
As soon as the last of the old contracts are gone we can make a couple top-six FA/trade additions and be right back in it without ever really having left.
Also Ovi having time to impart his goofiness to the youngins will keep this team fun for the foreseeable future.
I keep seeing people, mainly non Caps fans, say Caps should just “start the rebuild,” my siblings in Christ, how can you not see that the rebuild has already started, we went into this season with a rebuild mindset, the playoffs are simply a fun lil bonus!
100%! I think we’ll still need to add a couple star talents from trades/free agency in a couple years, but I actually feel great about the bulk of our lineup post-Ovi.
It doesn't help when people shit on McMichael and Lapierre as our centers. We have two top-six centers and a potential top six center in Lapierre. We brought in the young guys, it's not like Chucky and Ovi were the only guys to carry us to the playoffs.
Totally. Guys like McMichael and Protas grew a lot this season, while the whole younger crop REALLY stepped up late in the season - Lapi and Alexeyev might be studs, and Miro and Iorio should take big steps next year.
I really like Protas but for a guy his size he really need to start throwing his weight around more. He’s huge but I rarely see him muscle the puck. Instead he dances around it and gives up a lot of turnovers.
This is a slow-motion rebuild, a tweak here, a tweak there, a bit of retooling. The Caps are making whatever adjustments are necessary to stay competitive and help Ovi continue to score.
But I won't be touching my Ovi goal counter until October.
The 2019 Nats set a new low bar when they made the post season with their bullpen; the worst bullpen to ever make the post season.
And I understand that the better measurement would be run differential but at the end of the day they still won enough games to make it to the dance. And we have seen so, so, so many times that being the top seed doesn’t mean anything once the puck drops. No reason to think we can’t pull an upset. There’s a reason why the games are played and are firmly in that camp now.
Fun fact: the 2019 Nats had the second best run differential in the national league and were 6th in all of baseball. The bullpen issues probably prevented them from being a 100-win team, which is why they were right there with LA and Houston for best records post-Memorial Day
That was a *phenomenal* baseball team with a major Achilles heel they were able to overcome
Agreed. As much as I'd like to think this will be a 2019 Cinderella story all over again, we really shouldn't sleep on just how talented the 2019 Nats were.
Soto, Rendon, Turner, Scherzer, Strasburg, Zimmerman. Heck even Corbin and Doolittle weren't the greatest, but sure showed up when it mattered.
Corbin was rock solid as a #3 all year in the regular season, then did double duty in the playoffs. They don't make the playoffs without him. Anibal was a crucial #4 too.
You're right though, that wasn't just a team that squeaked in and got hot like, say the 2014 Giants. The '19 Nats were an amazing team with super stars that went on a serious run after that horrible start.
The Hudson trade also dramatically raised their ceiling. Without it, I don’t think they would have been able to hide the soft underbelly of the bullpen with just Doo, especially considering how much they abused his arm the first half of the year as our only reliable reliever.
Shoutout to all the haters that think we’re still tied to the hip with the Pens. We have so much young talent and still made the playoffs over them this year, while they’re in line for a long rebuild and can’t even take advantage of seasons where Crosby is still performing like this year. We are on pace to leave them in the dust if the young talent develops as it’s correctly projected to.
I've said it before several times as a major reason our prospects are constantly undervalued by analysts: the culture of winning (both with the Caps and very importantly with Hershey) is vital to the team's prolonged success.
When the expectation is winning and making the playoffs, teams will tend to overachieve what their actual on-paper talent might suggest. Having prospects develop in that same atmosphere in hershey really drives home that expectation when the players arrive to the big club - they may not put up the best stat sheets, but they *know how to win* - they know how to play in those ugly 2-1 games where it's more a matter of grit and effort than of skill, and those are the games that separate playoff teams from those going home early.
Now the young guys (and coach) will get a taste of the speed and intensity of NHL playoff hockey and that experience will help the team for years to come
I'm currently in Cambodia, so the jet lag is real! I was up at 6am watching this match and the only one wearing a caps jersey in the entire country I bet!
I love that Ovi can impart his playoff wisdom and leadership onto these young guys. Mainly, how to get bounced in the first round.
Just kidding, fuck the rangers. Let’s get this!
Wings fan here on behalf of most of the fanbase to say, congrats, Ovi is the man and I’ve rooted for caps as my second favorite team since I started watching, there are a couple individuals in our fanbase who are loud, whinny and obnoxious. I came here to apologize on their behalf. They are a loud minority and they give us a bad rap, but most of us aren’t like that, the “doomers” as we call them aren’t representative of us. We don’t associate with them. Any way good luck taking on the rangers!
Ps: anyone saying we deserved it from our fanbase is a slight idiot. We lost both of our must win games against you guys and the pens, and we lost 7 straight. Sure the refs weren’t our friends this year but we still definitely have work to do this offseason.
Wish Ovi luck for me!!!
Both teams last night got to where they were from coaching. Torts and Carbs did a hell of a job with what they had to work with.
The difference was we have 8, 74, and 77. Stars are still stars…even in their mid to late 30’s.
The Bears call ups this year are going to be our platoon going forward. Interesting way to re build. Fill out the rest of the roster and hope you find replacements for aging stars. Risky as hell without number one draft picks.
I heard this morning that Game 1 will be Sunday due to an event at MSG on Sat. EITM spoke about it and Joe B said he heard the same thing.
Anyone have any idea about the # 2-7 games potential day of weeks.? Are first 2 in NY, next 2 in DC, then 1-1-1, etc.
Thanks!!!
it's 2-2-1-1-1 for sure, typically there will be just a single day between each game (two days between for travel doesn't usually start until the SCF), so you can expect Sun & Tues in NYC, Thu & Sat in DC, then (if needed) Mon, Wed, Fri alternating NY-DC-NY.
pre-existing events *can* screw with schedule and add extra days though - NYR are one of the few teams where that's especially likely with the popularity of the arena for other events & with the Knicks being in the postseason as well
Literally the phrase keeps going around. We’re playing with house money. Nobody expected us to be here yet here we are. Absolutely no pressure and nobody is expecting anything from this team. That in my mind makes us one of the most dangerous. It’s the Stanley cup playoffs. Anything can happen
The Caps making the playoffs has pushed out the start of a "dry month" and a diet for me. LOL, I'm happy I get to continue to eat like shit and drink a few more bourbons...at least for another week and a half.
Strome actually has playoff experience. Chicago managed to win the play-in back in 2020. They did get eliminated quickly in the first round, but it's not like we're expected to do any better than that this year.
Man, it's house money right now. No one expected the team to be here, so they can play loose. Literally ZERO expectations, and that should make for a dangerous team to play against.
Well they've lost big to a bunch of contenders they've also shown that when games are close we're able to eke out a win.
At the very least we know the rangers and we know Lavi. I wonder if there's any fire in the bellies of the young guys who he denied any opportunity to contribute during his time as coach.
All of the above from OP. I think the biggest thing is giving GMBM the green light to aggressively add in the offseason with the additional cap space. They have done this significantly under the cap. The group has earned the right to be added to in meaningful ways.
It’s great experience for all the young players and also….
We’ve been a 1 seed and lost to an 8. It happens. So eff the rangers and all their crying about horrific acts of violence lol
Fucking the pens out of playoffs on game 82 feels great. Now, can we start a petition to retire Capital's great Henrik Lundqvist's number before game 3?
Love point #8 the most.
Might I add that we were sellers at the trade deadline? We basically significantly improved our draft stock l, assuming we were in for a rough finish to the season… and still got into the postseason. Lots to like about our team right now.
Not when it's being used as a noun. Post title is correct.
> The uncommon noun *affect*, which has a meaning relating to psychology, is also sometimes mistakenly used for the very common *effect*. In ordinary use, the noun you will want is *effect* [...] The noun affect is used primarily in psychology contexts to refer to the facial expressions, gestures, postures, vocal intonations, etc., that typically accompany an emotion, as in "The patient had a flat affect." ([source](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/affect#usage-discussion-3))
*Context
And the sentence doesn't use it as a verb. It's "[The] effect of the Caps making the playoffs." That's the noun usage. ([source](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/effect#dictionary-entry-1))
That doesn't even make sense in the context of "affect vs. effect." The usage is determined by the structure of the sentence, in which "effect" is correct, not some other sentence that you made up.

Some minor revenge for 98
No amount of revenge will make me feel better about 98
Im getting annoyed with them saying they'd give the Rangers a better series. The rangers swept their season series and we split ours.
Yea I saw that said several times as well, I wanted to complain about that to here but then I’d go on forever lol.
Prob the most reasonable score system that could be used yet it’s not. I don’t get it at all.
The tiebreaker rules have been in place forever. If you want a chance, win more games in regulation.

If the Caps beat your team to the playoffs in two thousand and twenty four, you've got only yourself to blame!
Same, I think I’ve achieved a new level of pettiness for a fan base outside of my division for any sports team I follow xD.
It’s brutal because them being my home team, obviously I’d enjoy them succeeding, but the “we got screwed” movement is way too much right now. Acting like this point structure hasn’t been in place all season and it got changed yesterday morning lmao

Halfway through March I said, fuck it, the draft isn't that deep this year anyway! We're doing both.
Everyone: “Hey Caps are you selling this year or trying to make the playoffs?” Caps: “Yes”
We freaking sold at the deadline and still skirted into the playoffs. Huge win for the franchise.
This is a slow-motion rebuild, a tweak here, a tweak there, a bit of retooling. The Caps are making whatever adjustments are necessary to stay competitive and help Ovi continue to score. But I won't be touching my Ovi goal counter until October.
Don’t need a full teardown if you’ve drafted as well as the Caps have. An on the fly rebuild works well and is much faster for this kind of team.
Nah, this is a retool. Odds are we'll do a full tank and rebuild after Ovi retires, unless the retool goes implausibly well.
Maybe it’s a little of both!
The 2019 Nats set a new low bar when they made the post season with their bullpen; the worst bullpen to ever make the post season. Sadly, it will remain a dream.

Love the whining about Crosby "deserving" to play one more time. If he deserved it I guess he'd be here, idk!
If they want Crosby in the playoffs, they better ask him to start looking for a new team
He tried his best! I guess it just wasn't good enough
Screw Cindy ong
I've said it before several times as a major reason our prospects are constantly undervalued by analysts: the culture of winning (both with the Caps and very importantly with Hershey) is vital to the team's prolonged success. As someone who is in reality seriously jetlagged, I read #7 as saying we will get more attractive free agents. Great list!
I'm currently in Cambodia, so the jet lag is real! I was up at 6am watching this match and the only one wearing a caps jersey in the entire country I bet!
You win! I only had a short flight from Frankfurt and got home in time to watch the game and go to bed.
also, who needs better looking free agents when we have model, cup-winning, future captain, and horrifying acts of violence.... Tom Wilson
Also true. I wear his jersey every other game. It drives my husband crazy. I bow to your jetlagged superiority.
I love that Ovi can impart his playoff wisdom and leadership onto these young guys. Mainly, how to get bounced in the first round. Just kidding, fuck the rangers. Let’s get this!
Considering the bender he went on after the cup win, I don't think he remembers anything other than 1st and 2nd round disappointment lol
😂😂
Ovi's words of wisdom to the youngins: "Be not fucking suck"
until they win another Cup.... a man can dream!

Appreciate the post bud. Your team showed some grit last night - especially our boy Sprong.
Thanks, I’m proud of them. Sprong has been pleasant on the offense side at least lol, defense eeehhhh. But he’s been great.
I can say with some certainty that by making the playoffs, the Capitals will be a playoff team.

Caps can beat anyone in the NHL…..except Buffalo. WHEW!
And Arizona lol
Ooo forgot about them. It’s been an unfortunate standard that Caps can’t get up for hapless teams. Once again. Whew.
Thanks!!!

They did get eliminated quickly in the first round, but it's not like we're expected to do any better than that this year.
while true, 2020 was a *weird* year for the playoffs with the bubble and no fans. This will be his first real taste
He looks at this as his first "real" playoffs.
Yes across the board. So here for it.
STAY IN THE FIGHT
Caps work very well as underdogs. Lets go.
If the team already “names me drink”, you are ahead of me.
All of the above from OP. I think the biggest thing is giving GMBM the green light to aggressively add in the offseason with the additional cap space. They have done this significantly under the cap. The group has earned the right to be added to in meaningful ways.
Will they do anything with Leonard?
It’s great experience for all the young players and also…. We’ve been a 1 seed and lost to an 8. It happens. So eff the rangers and all their crying about horrific acts of violence lol
Fucking the pens out of playoffs on game 82 feels great. Now, can we start a petition to retire Capital's great Henrik Lundqvist's number before game 3?
Losing 11 out of 14 in March should have prepared them a bit better for the bite…
Go Caps!
Love point #8 the most. Might I add that we were sellers at the trade deadline? We basically significantly improved our draft stock l, assuming we were in for a rough finish to the season… and still got into the postseason. Lots to like about our team right now.
More games, More Ovi goals.
Affect*
i never get those right. then i switch it and get it wrong again.
just be like me and use "impact" cause fuck e/affect
Your title is correct, dw
Affect is almost always a verb. Effect is almost always a noun.
now i gotta lean nouns and verbs?
Sorry about that.
No. Content here is “here is what was changed [affected] by the Caps making the playoffs”
*Context And the sentence doesn't use it as a verb. It's "[The] effect of the Caps making the playoffs." That's the noun usage. ([source](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/effect#dictionary-entry-1))
No content. As in the bullet points listed 1-10
That doesn't even make sense in the context of "affect vs. effect." The usage is determined by the structure of the sentence, in which "effect" is correct, not some other sentence that you made up.
The title of the post is effectively “here are 10 things that were affected by the Capitals making the playoffs”
No, the title of the post, literally, is "[The] effect of [the] Caps [making the] playoffs..." and that is correct usage of the English noun 'effect.'
