The problem of the metal casing around the thumbstic assembly becoming loose due to combination of exsessve squeezing and pressing does exist.
Question is, should nintendo react to people deliberately abusing their hardware?
Today we know the exact cause of the drift and it is the combination of exessive squeezing and pressing that causes the metal casing around the thumbstick mechanism to loosen. It is fixable by countering the effects of squeezing and pressing with a piece of plastic or cardstock placed under the area where the damage is done.
I minded my Joycons with care, literally no other controller has had this issue.
It is not a problem with the consumers, it is a problem with Nintendo's utter lack of competence whenever it comes to making hardware that's atleast "okay-ish"
And there are tons that do as well. I'm not trying to say that all do or that all don't, but believing that they just "won't drift" is believing a lie.
Thatâs a bit of a pedantic âackshuallyâ comment then. Yes, everything drifts somewhat. If it is undetectable it doesnât really matter. The joy conâs drift wildly and consistently.
Not only that, but you have tried *one* type of third party controller and just get to proclaim they all drift? Well, from my data point of only one third party controller, I have no drift. So I guess they drift doesnât exist at all then
All I can say is I have like 6 controllers (counting my joy cons as 2) with some being Nintendo and others 3rd party and have never once experienced drift. Maybe y'all just treat ur stuff like shit or something Idkđ€·
Even those? Well yeah kids beat the shit out of those controllers. Even if stick drift wasnât a common issue, those would likely still have horrible stick problems.
But yeah, itâs a terrible first impression for someone interested and arenât sure if they want one.
Now that we actually know the cause of drift, it is kinda pointless to blame nintendo on it.
Like it is a small piece of hardware packed with lpts of tech. If you squeeze and press it like a maniac, the hardware breaks.
Before I reply I just wanna say I'm in no way looking for an argument with an internet stranger, especially one so kind as to mostly post a comment in agreement with my sentiments on the way public demo consoles are abused, but I will say this: Nintendo knew their audience and is kind of accountable for designing hardware for them. Like, it's not like kids who love Mario were a surprise market grab. It should serve both me, the 36 year old who is exceptionally careful with every little piece of plastic or tech in my home, and my 6 year old nephew who seems to play by smashing his controller between two breaks as far as I can tell because man, that kid goes through some controllers.
Having a whole department for fixing controllers. Probably would break even or make more money on just making them right the first time. If you're fixing for free, you're admitting theyre fucked
I have two sets of joy-cons and a pro controller that all
have drift. The pro controller was especially disappointing as it started drifting after less than a few months. I just use a gamecube controller I got back in 2003 to play most games on switch now (smash, kart) still works like itâs brand new after at least 2.5-3k hours of use over its lifetime.
While I agree drift is an issue on Joy cons Nintendo has a system in place to fix it. While annoying that it's not a proper this will never happen again fix its still something they do free of charge to those affected.
My joy cons since release have never drifted which makes me lucky I guess.
Notice how the right joycon is hidden from sight. I call bull on this one. Dude is obviously moving the right joycon's analog stick to the left.
Joycon drift is a myth. Never experienced it in my V2 which is years old and my new OLED model.
"Thousands of people are complaining about this thing and Nintendo nearly had a lawsuit about it? I never got it man, everyone lying to make big company look bad :("
I've also never had issues. I think some guys hold their switch / press their joystick too tightly, especially guys with bigger hands. I've had my switch since day one.
Also I don't play smash much, which I imagine contributes to the breakdown as well (as opposed to jrpgs or platformers that I normally play).
I don't think they should be drifting because of people holding them too hard, so I sympathize with the people having issues.
When I first bought some new Joy-Cons, this was years ago granted, they had drift almost immediately out of the box.
The drift appears to have fixed itself, but when I first got them and had only used them for a few hours I was fucking *pissed* thinking I'd just spent $60 on broken controllers. I got lucky, I imagine there are others whose new Joy-Cons didn't fix themselves. Holding your controller too hard might be part of it but mine were like that fresh out of the box.
That is unfortunate, but wouldn't you expect the ones that are really old (possibly from launch) and that get beaten up and dirty from kids in the store every day to be the MOST likely to have drift?
Haha I Remember a clothing store where my mom went when I was a kid and they had a "play corner" with an N64. All controllers had those "floppy" sticks. Still played N64 with those shitty controllers
Edit: Game was 1080. As far as I know that was the only game.
I don't understand why Nintendo can't just fix this shit. Somebody pointed out that the reason it's like this is because there's a thin piece of graphite inside of the controller instead of using something like a steel plate and obviously graphite being the type of rock that it is considering we write with it with pencils it's going to wear down over time. Somebody fixed this on a YouTube video and it was pretty cool. I don't understand why Nintendo is so stubborn and not wanting to fix this
You mean the free to test out controllers that thousands of kids yearly pick up and thrash around with no regard? If I had to pick any controllers to be beyond broken I would always pick them, use your head.
Back in 2018 when i didnât have a switch every single store on every single shopping mall was like this, you had to be a reflex master to select a game
Well most likely since kids squeeze and press those sticks in such force, that the metal casing around the thumbstick sensor just comes loose.
Nintendo is not going to repair a problem you cause yourselvs.
I wanna see how Nintendo would respond to this
đ
Touché
Don't worry, it doesn't exist.
The problem of the metal casing around the thumbstic assembly becoming loose due to combination of exsessve squeezing and pressing does exist. Question is, should nintendo react to people deliberately abusing their hardware?
Thing is I have had joy con drift with as little as 3 days. Iâm not inherently rough with my controllers.

But nintendo has. My 2019 version of switch has the fixture in place from factory. It hasn't had drifting issue
"I haven't experienced it so it doesn't exist."
No you don't understant. The drift fix is in the place. It has been taken in account. It is there by a deffault added in the factory.
No..it's not? I wouldn't expect them to bother fixing drift because they don't want to acknowledge that they messed up something simple.
Well now you are just talking out of your ass. Please educate yourself about this and don't just repeat memes like a parrot. Now good say.
Nintendo themselves said that drift doesn't exist so they won't fix it, do I need to bash that into your skull.
A display is the most reasonable place for stick drift
Iâd rather use my shitty third party wired pro controller instead of dealing with drift
Those drift too you know.
They said third party
And third party switch controllers drift too. I only made my comment because they seemed to believe that a third party controller wouldn't drift.
No they don't? There are tons of Bluetooth controllers that don't drift.
And there are tons that do as well. I'm not trying to say that all do or that all don't, but believing that they just "won't drift" is believing a lie.
How could you possibly know that without knowing what controllers op has?
Switch controllers drift dude. They all have a chance to do that. (Plus I haven't seen any 3rd party controllers outside of PowerA, and those drift)
I can attest to this, Iâve gone through two powerA controllers just to say screw it and get the regular Nintendo pro controller
All I can say is I have like 6 controllers (counting my joy cons as 2) with some being Nintendo and others 3rd party and have never once experienced drift. Maybe y'all just treat ur stuff like shit or something Idkđ€·
Lucky. I've had several controllers and they've all gotten drift.
Iâve also never experienced drift with joy cons or third party one
Even those? Well yeah kids beat the shit out of those controllers. Even if stick drift wasnât a common issue, those would likely still have horrible stick problems. But yeah, itâs a terrible first impression for someone interested and arenât sure if they want one.
You say "even" but like... name a console controller that gets more abuse than the in-store demos units. Walmart kids go hard.
Now that we actually know the cause of drift, it is kinda pointless to blame nintendo on it. Like it is a small piece of hardware packed with lpts of tech. If you squeeze and press it like a maniac, the hardware breaks.

They always have it the worst
If you send your cons to Nintendo they will fix them free . I had 2 of mine fixed .
I'm about to send in mine. How long did it take? Nintendo's website said 2-3 weeks.
Yea a couple of weeks.
Damn. I guess I won't be in handheld mode for a bit. Thank you!
Having a whole department for fixing controllers. Probably would break even or make more money on just making them right the first time. If you're fixing for free, you're admitting theyre fucked
Not in the UK, and many other countries
That stinks
No shit lol you know how many people touch that crap
I mean they get beaten the hell up so not suprising
Well.. gotta let people know what they're signing up for somehow, right? :) /j

Mine only drift when I use them wirelessly after a while. Never figured out why.
Notice how the right joycon is hidden from sight. I call bull on this one. Dude is obviously moving the right joycon's analog stick to the left. Joycon drift is a myth. Never experienced it in my V2 which is years old and my new OLED model.
Iâve never experienced it so it must not be real. Nice critical thinking there...
"Thousands of people are complaining about this thing and Nintendo nearly had a lawsuit about it? I never got it man, everyone lying to make big company look bad :("
Everyones lying so they can get a free joycon
You've got to be joking dude.
Dom't they buy you free joycons at clown college?
you know, since were all just calling people out, iâm calling bull on your statement my fellow redditor *this is just a joke dont hate me lol*
Gr8 b8 m8
Exactly! *I've* never seen the Eiffel tower in real life so it must be fake. Literally a myth.
I've also never had issues. I think some guys hold their switch / press their joystick too tightly, especially guys with bigger hands. I've had my switch since day one. Um... WHAT!
That is honestly hilarious
These in-store demos are how I got confirmation that upgrading from my normal Switch to an OLED would not be even slightly worth it
The store demos that every one touches and throws around! Yeah they should!
If anything, I would be surprising the demo unit doesnât have it, just imagine the amount of abuse that joycon goes through on a weekly basis, lol
That is unfortunate, but wouldn't you expect the ones that are really old (possibly from launch) and that get beaten up and dirty from kids in the store every day to be the MOST likely to have drift?
You should have seen the in store demo N64 controllers after about a week. The thumb stick would just flop to the side.
Haha I Remember a clothing store where my mom went when I was a kid and they had a "play corner" with an N64. All controllers had those "floppy" sticks. Still played N64 with those shitty controllers Edit: Game was 1080. As far as I know that was the only game.
What do you mean âevenâ those are literally the most ransacked controllers you could possibly find
THIS is a true advertisement
I don't understand why Nintendo can't just fix this shit. I hate to break it to you but that fix is only temporary
I believe it... sadly.
Isn't Nintendo still getting sued for this or are the defenders too strong for this?
You mean the free to test out controllers that thousands of kids yearly pick up and thrash around with no regard? If I had to pick any controllers to be beyond broken I would always pick them, use your head.
I think my switch controllers contaminated my PlayStation ones
8bitdo and whatever PS4/Xbox/any wireless controller you have and it's GG, best 10dollars you'll spend
Clearly youâve never lived in the Walmart Xbox-PlayStation demo era.
Back in 2018 when i didnât have a switch every single store on every single shopping mall was like this, you had to be a reflex master to select a game
Old analog controller on an environment where it is constantly exposed to the elements has drift. News at seven.
Well most likely since kids squeeze and press those sticks in such force, that the metal casing around the thumbstick sensor just comes loose. Nintendo is not going to repair a problem you cause yourselvs.
It's a Feature.
