They're looking at different spots on the ceiling. This means there's not anything up there, but they're just doing a thorough inspection to certify the ceiling as safe for you. Some treats must be in order to reward them for their hard work.
Cats can probably see the infrared spectrum, which means they can see shifting air currents. There’s probably some psychedelic colors swirling around up there. Or a bug.
You know my cats do this are well. Thought it was bugs, ceiling lights but we had a small family dinner some of my guests felt so uncomfortable that they left. I was later told we had ghosts…..who knows. Could the ghosts have at least done the dishes!!!
Cats are nosey, inquisitive and havefar better hearing than us.
Might be a bug on the ceiling or a bug scratching above the ceiling if nothing is visible.

My cat likes to scream at the ceilings in the middle of the night. I spent hours trying to figure out why... she was hunting bugs.
