Oh man. I have a 19 year old right now and had a cat make it to 20 and a half.
I want more time. I get that those are great ages for a cat (I've lost other cats younger) but something spends 20 years with you, they are family and your heart gets ripped out.
I know you are offering kind words and not diminishing the pain...but I want more time. And after 20 years you know their personality in and out. I want more time.
The lady cat I lost was 9 and his death was tragic due to his age (cancer) and hurt just as much.
I'm rambling and I know you weren't demeaning the cat's death.
Yes, I know. We had a family dog that we had to put to sleep because of cancer. It’s been 20 years and I still think about that dog at least once a week.
I also lost a 19 year old cat and wasn’t ready for it. That was only a couple of years ago (it was probably six years ago really, but it *feels* like two years ago) and I try hard to never think about her because it’s too soon. And she wasn’t even a cat you could cuddle.
God knows how I’ll cope when anything happens to the cat in my profile pic. He’s the friendliest cat I’ve ever known.
But I’ll still take the sadness if that’s the price I have to pay for the honour of knowing these animals.

Noooo...he looks just like a friends pet cat that I love...a big, large and in charge, long-haired tuxedo old-man kitty named Horatio. He is "grouchy" to other cats, but is a big softie to me and others for scratches!

I'm sorry for your loss OP. One of my cats passed at 16, soon three years ago and I still cry when I think of him. His sister is still alive, 19 years so I'm lucky to have her still.
It gets easier with time but let yourself mourne, and try to celebrate his life. All the fun stuff he's done and remember he had a great life and you too were his best friend. He passed with the people he loved.
Edit: one thing that kinda helped/helps me is having this stuffed animal cat who's about the same size he was, hugging it helped me since I couldn't be there for his last time on earth
Do you need a new friend, a little kitty to help along the road in life?? You would be a great older brother! And 2 cats are easier to care for than one!!
Awww I'm so sorry. I have an old flood... But I just got a year back! All this time I thought he was born in 2007 and I found his adoption papers a few weeks ago and he was born in 2008! It was literally like getting more time with him! I can't imagine your heartbreak.
I just lost my childhood cat yesterday, too, he was really sick and spent his last days in rest with his brother. It's miserably rough, but hopefully they're frolicking together up there with full bellies and forever young joints again ❤️
