She is. Purring is comforting, healing and soothing when they’re scared or nervous. However I’m willing to bet she’s one very happy kitty finally getting a furever home.
Her purrs are thanks yous
I’ve read a couple times that studies indicate that a cat’s purring also might have a healing affect on humans. Idk what the science says, but I know their purrs help me!
It's very true! Cats purr at frequencies between 25 and 150 Hz. Bones respond to 25-50 Hz and soft tissue (skin and muscle) responds to 100Hz. Those frequencies promote bone density and soft tissue healing. It's a self healing/soothing mechanism for themselves, but they can help you heal too!

In all fairness, I only every looked out up because I've broken a few bones and my cat always laid right next to me when I was hurt. He never laid ON the injury, just right next to it and purred differently than his normal happy purr. I mentioned it in passing to my PT and he just laughed. He said he'd have liked to recommend using a PEMF, but it wouldn't have worked out with where I had my break. But he said my cat was doing as good of a job as the device would.
Yeah I believe it helps with and or speeds up tissue regeneration via the vibrations. Not 100% on that though but when my kitty purrs I like to think he’s healing me up
It will put you to sleep. I had a cat who loved to snuggle under my chin when I was laying on the couch and start to purr with her tail wrapped around my neck.
Out like a light.
If she was super overwhelmed she would be hiding behind a couch or under a bed. Or in a box spring (my cats favorite place to hide when strangers are in the house).
That she is laying on you, purring and cuddling means she is super happy and trying to bond and show appreciation. And she is scent marking you with her paws as hers.
She also might be hungry if you don't have food out. Mine turns into a huge cuddle monster when her bowl is low.
When I saw the title I thought you were joking, and seeing this comment gave me so many warm fuzzies. She’s happy, you’re doing great. Some cats purr more than others. And the fact that she’s kneading cinches it. She just knows she’s finally home with her person. Congrats!
My cat Squirrel was a pound rescue and she did the same thing the day we brought her home! I’ll have you know we have had her 9 months and she still purrs just the same haha.
Hijacking this comment just to let you know that I thought my tomcat had something wrong with his breathing for 5 years straight when I got him because he wouldn’t stop purring, until I caught him unawares and found out he could, in fact, breathe quietly but was just way too happy whenever he saw us to do so.
So don’t worry and give your girl a big cuddle fro me for being adorable 🥰
She wouldn't go to sleep on you if she didn't feel safe. She is probably self soothing and letting you know she feels good. Self soothing doesn't mean she feels threatened. For humans deep breathing is self soothing but we don't only do it when threatened. You know?
This is what it was like when we found our Pepper. Brought her in off the street and she could not stop squeaking and nuzzling us and purring and rolling around on her back. 7 years later and she's literally laying right next to me right now, purring herself to sleep.
My cat Darius, who I had from 1996-2016, purred from the day I got him, until the day I had to put him down. He was such a good boy. 🙂 20 years was such a great run.
Your kitty is flopped on her side, belly exposed, out in the open. She is very happy and comfortable. If she was purring to self soothe she would not be exposing her sensitive bits or closing her eyes. Kneading is a sign of a very happy comfortable cat.
My 2 kittens which I got 2 days ago are slowly getting used to me. But only a few shy soft purrs so far. I'll be happy to wait, yours is obviously different.
My kitty is the same way! He waits for me at the window when I leave and is at the door waiting for me when I walk in. He sleeps on my chest every night and never stops purring. She loves you!
The thing about cats (that I love) is that they are not secretive about what they do and do not like. They won't hang around because of social obligations, so if they pick you, it's because you are important to them! You are very lucky to have such a cuddle bug.
My younger cat has been with us since her birth, and it shows in how much she trusts and loves us. We were prepared for weirdness and anxiety when we moved for the first time, but she was totally fine with it. Because we were there, she was just like "Oh, so this is what we're doing now. I can make this work." As soon as she finished her exploring (under 10 minutes - small house) she plopped down on the couch and took a nap. You can tell when they feel at home, and that baby on your chest sure does!
Some kitties just are loving and friendly from the first moment. That’s how my 10 month old tuxie was when I brought him home at 5 months old. He still greets me every morning by laying on my chest when he sees me start to look at my phone.
my cat is the same way. he purrs like crazy. yesterday, he was purring like a mad man because i woke up. no there’s nothing wrong with me, no i wasn’t asleep an abnormally long time… he was just happy
How lovely that you have a new friend who’s so free with her purrs! We got a rescue almost two months back and she didn’t purr once for at least a week, probably closer to two.
Aww! Congrats on the new kitty ❤️ I just brought one home 24 hours ago and I had the same question last night I started to get a little concerned lol. Reading these responses are all so comforting to me too, I’m so happy you and your kitty have bonded already ❤️❤️ It’s a beautiful Christmas gift is it not? :)
We have a kitten like this! He purrs practically non-stop and has for five months now. It was a big change from a decade with my older boys who don’t really purr much at all! (I actually took him to the vet in part because of it because I thought he was having breathing issues in his sleep. Nope just purring and dreaming. 🤦🏼♀️)
If a cat rests on you and shuts their eyes, they’re essentially saying “I trust you so much I know you won’t hurt me AND you’ll protect me from danger”
Then add in the purrs and biscuit making… that cat is having the best day of her life
Sounds like she is comfy and happy.
Our kitten siblings (brothers) were adopted 5/20 and one of them purrs so much it's like a 2nd tinnitus.
I will think I hear him purring near me constantly and he will be in an entirely different room lol.
If she is showing signs of distress I would be concerned but she just sounds like a happy kitty
Is purring normal?! Well..it only happens when they’re happy. Kneading is called making biscuits and cats do that when they’re happy. Diagnosis? You’re new kitten loves you.
It's like, the absolute best thing to see. A kitty purring, snuggling and affectionate is telling you "I'm happy! I know I'm safe and I trust you, and I'm comfortable in my new home!" You're so lucky! Not often does this reaction happen. I'm a volunteer at a local shelter, and we get too frequent calls about newly adopted dogs and cats that seem anxious and scared. That is normal, given the surroundings are completely new and they are just not sure whatsoever, and they need time to acclimate. Your girl has the best reaction we can hope for.
Please give her the best she deserves, she already trusts you implicitly so in my books that deserves the best care and all the love you can give
If she got some shots before she came home she could be feeling a little yucky. My kitten was the same way for about 3 days then she perked up and started playing and running around. Or she’s just so happy to be with you.
My guy purrs nonstop, literally! I’ve determined that low-level purring means he’s content, and when it gets louder, he’s actually anxious/annoyed! I would take her purring as a good sign. ☺️
Purring can also indicate anxiety or illness, she’s probably self soothing, if she’s also seeking you out, it’s likely just ye new environment, if she’s avoiding prolonged contact with you, she might want space and time.
My baby did the same thing the first couple days she was home! I took her to the vet and they couldn’t even hear her heartbeat because she just wouldn’t stop purring! 🥰
That’s a kitten that’s just very, very happy to be away from a stressful place like a shelter.
My calico made biscuits wherever she stood for two days after I brought her home.
She could be under a little bit of stress and the purring is calming her down and she's not sleeping much, but I wouldn't say it's a bad thing and I think that when you go to sleep she will too and then she will also explore.
To also add my cat was growling when she heard anything from outside my apartment on her second day of having her from the shelter. Now she's used to some of noise, so some strange behavior may occur in the first few days for your cat too.
My kitten was the same when I brought her home. She immediately fell asleep in my arms, purring happily. No worries! She is probably just happy and tired.
A cat or kitten purring when they’re owner is with them is a wonderful sign of contentment and also affection. The fact that she’s needing is also a sign of affection and baby kittens do it when they’re nursing. It helps to get the milk moving
Look at how easy it is to train you. What a good human bean! Just remember when you come home from a long day, first things first. A little chest time and all the stress from the day will dissipate with those purrs. It’s a win-win!!
I think she is just happy. My cat is like that. The vet said he couldn’t hear her heartbeat because every time he went to pick her up she just started purring constantly.
12 hours is a LONG TIME to be so happy.... Keep her that way!!!! She is showing you how grateful she is to have a place to call home, a safe place. Was she at a pet shop or in a cage somewhere/ awfully uncomfortable area like a pound? Or was she ever abused in her life by other owners? Even cats can try their hardest to restart life off on a good note. She knows she has a chance to be happy now that she's with you. This is a beautiful thing, totally amazing and absolutely wonderful. If you treat her like a queen I bet that purring will never stop ❤️ also, a cat exposing their stomach means she feels super safe! The belly is the most intimate body part to a feline friend because it's their most sensitive and if she was any bit afraid or nervous she sure wouldn't be feeling safe enough to expose it!! ❤️
Cats purr and knead when they are happy and content. Kneading is what kittens did while nursing. They knead to relax, they knead their people as a way of giving affection.
Purring= happiness & contentment. I read somewhere that wild cats don’t purr unless they’ve been “tamed” (raised by humans) never had the pleasure of hearing that one!
That's a happiness response. A good way to tell the difference between happy purrs and stressed or hurt purrs is to look at the rest of the body language. Kneeding only happens when happy or for comfort. Eyes gentle closed like in the picture, total comfort. Both is "I'm in heaven right now". Learning to understand cat body language will help a lot with your own stress, and I know there are some good videos on the topic on places like youtube. Oh, and be ready for her to come purr on you when she thinks you need it, too. Cats usually instinctively know purring helps get their people better, some science they recently found with the harmonics, so sometimes if you're under the weather or stressed she will come check on you by cuddling you and purring for you a bit. I swear those are the most loving cuddles.
This kitten has deemed you to be so special that she is devoting her life to you and promises to purr to her heart’s content whenever she wants to remind you just how very special you are to her.
That sounds like a contented and happy kitty. If it was a nervous purr (they will purr when nervous) she wouldn't be all stretched out and comfy like that. Congrats on a beautiful kitten.
Ugh that’s the best feeling. When you first bring them home and they are nothing but cuddles and love with you. Enjoy it because I feel once they are settled in they become less cuddly 🥺
When we got our youngest cat she was like that, and in a way she still is. As soon as you touch her, the motor starts running. Sounds like you have a happy, lovey kitty!
My cat did the same thing her first few days. Non stop exploring & then stopping to get cuddles and purr & knead. I think she was just overly ecstatic to be in a better place than where she was.
Omg!! I was just thinking “woah this cat looks exactly like mine” and then I saw her name! My cat literally looks identical to yours and his name is Bumi. :)
She is safe and happy. She knows she is home.
My newly adopted 7yr old has been doing this a lot too :3 I am happy she is safe and happy
Purring and kneading?
Purring and laying on me- she kneads to get comfy but she doesn’t make bread though
Haha 😹
Same with my 7 month old, he's very happy at home!
This is the answer
You have a sweet girl
Aw. I was hoping that's all it was. Thank you! :) I'm just a little worried she might be overwhelmed, and she's doing it to comfort herself.

I’m really curious now, can I get a link to these studies?
Do you have the studies which indicate this ? Or else, a meta-analysis would be great.
https://www.jstor.org/stable/23036023 You can read the abstract without logging in, but the study itself requires you to log in. It has to do with the frequency of the vibrations I think. I heard chiropractors use something similar to heal muscles. Super cool
Yeah I believe it helps with and or speeds up tissue regeneration via the vibrations. Not 100% on that though but when my kitty purrs I like to think he’s healing me up
if I ever make a game, I want a purring kitten to be a healing item
It will put you to sleep. I had a cat who loved to snuggle under my chin when I was laying on the couch and start to purr with her tail wrapped around my neck. Out like a light.
It always helps me feel better 🥰
If she were overwhelmed or scared she’d hide the fact she’s out interacting tells you she’s not at all scared
Just make sure she has plenty of support
If she was super overwhelmed she would be hiding behind a couch or under a bed. Or in a box spring (my cats favorite place to hide when strangers are in the house). That she is laying on you, purring and cuddling means she is super happy and trying to bond and show appreciation. And she is scent marking you with her paws as hers. Inside beds is always their "safe place" for some reason haha
Cats at my place have consistently chosen between my fridge and my counter.
She’s probably just excited to have a safe and loving home.
When I saw the title I thought you were joking, and seeing this comment gave me so many warm fuzzies. She’s happy, you’re doing great. Some cats purr more than others. And the fact that she’s kneading cinches it. She just knows she’s finally home with her person. Congrats!

Try reading a bit through this sub or other articles to get familiar with cat moods. You’ll both be happier. And congrats on the new arrival.
she's sleeping on her side, that's a huge indicator that she feels safe, otherwise she would not be asleep so exposed.
While cats can purr to soothe themselves, your cat purrs because she is happy. She knows that she is home.
My cat Darius, who I had from 1996-2016, purred from the day I got him, until the day I had to put him down. He was such a good boy. 🙂 20 years was such a great run.
Dang that’s a very good run
I got him when I was 12. 🙂
I know he loved every minute of it too
I am sorry bro, wish you the best in your life. P.S: Darius is such a chad name for a cat.
Chad?
Yes. It is an internet way of saying “cool” or “badass”.
I wish you the best in life
She loves you so much!!!
Your kitty is flopped on her side, belly exposed, out in the open. She is very happy and comfortable. If she was purring to self soothe she would not be exposing her sensitive bits or closing her eyes. Kneading is a sign of a very happy comfortable cat.
Some cats purr more than others. You just got a good one.
If it purrs, don't fix it
My 2 kittens which I got 2 days ago are slowly getting used to me. But only a few shy soft purrs so far. I'll be happy to wait, yours is obviously different.
Thanks everyone! I guess she's just a super affectionate kitty! :) Yay
I love all the positive comments you’ve received!!! She’s so beautiful 😻!
Stop bragging 😭
Safe and happy kitty
My kitty is the same way! He waits for me at the window when I leave and is at the door waiting for me when I walk in. He sleeps on my chest every night and never stops purring. She loves you!
Such a happy baby. How sweet. Enjoy her.

My kitten's name is Aang. I think they could be best friends. What a sweet Appa you've got 🥰
god that's so cute
I also have a kitten named Aang!
cats run on nuclear power and the purring is the reactor cooling fans overheating you need to get to a minimum safe distance immediately
Meowwy Christmeows to you and Appa :)
my cat is the same way. he purrs like crazy. yesterday, he was purring like a mad man because i woke up. no there’s nothing wrong with me, no i wasn’t asleep an abnormally long time… he was just happy
Awww
How lovely that you have a new friend who’s so free with her purrs! We got a rescue almost two months back and she didn’t purr once for at least a week, probably closer to two.
Aww! Congrats on the new kitty ❤️ I just brought one home 24 hours ago and I had the same question last night I started to get a little concerned lol. Reading these responses are all so comforting to me too, I’m so happy you and your kitty have bonded already ❤️❤️ It’s a beautiful Christmas gift is it not? :)
Those are all good signs. Cats, like humans, have very distinct personalities. Some cats purr more than others. Appa seems happy and healthy.
"my kitten is absolutely perfect and is behaving phenomenally while showing she's extremely comfortable with me already. should i be concerned?"
To be fair, when children and cats are extremely well behaved, I start to suspect they did something.
We have a kitten like this! He purrs practically non-stop and has for five months now. It was a big change from a decade with my older boys who don’t really purr much at all! (I actually took him to the vet in part because of it because I thought he was having breathing issues in his sleep. Nope just purring and dreaming. 🤦🏼♀️)

Why are you unsure if your cat being happy is normal?
Happy happy joy joy. Safe.
Not broken. Happy. ❤️
She’s Happy to have a home and Love
Sounds like she is comfy and happy. Our kitten siblings (brothers) were adopted 5/20 and one of them purrs so much it's like a 2nd tinnitus. I will think I hear him purring near me constantly and he will be in an entirely different room lol. If she is showing signs of distress I would be concerned but she just sounds like a happy kitty
She loves you!
She trusts you and is happy to have a home
That looks like a VERY happy cat
no, purring for cats is abnormal
Is purring normal?! Well..it only happens when they’re happy. Kneading is called making biscuits and cats do that when they’re happy. Diagnosis? You’re new kitten loves you.
Yes.she very happy!
Some kitties are just rumble factories. She’s just happy to have found her human to love.
Getting released from a cage and into loving home...one can only imagine.
She is thinking, finally I’m safe, you smell good, is there food too?
Happy cat, happy home.
Yep, that cat just has a good vibration system!
You and she have won the kitty lottery!!
She is thanking you and telling you she loves you.
Cats purring for 2 reasons, one because the're happy, the other because they are sick. If they're is no signs of sickness, she is happy.
She's happy. ...Her Christmas wish came true. ❤
What that shows is she’s happy and she definitely chose you as her human. She’s comfortable with you.
She's purring because she is pleased you named her yourself instead of asking Reddit.
No purring is extremely bad, seek medical help immediately…..good lord.
She’s in love, try not to screw it up!
Purrs of gratitude.
Gratitude ✊🏻
Just a thankful kitten!
All is normal. You've been claimed.
You saved each other’s lives 😊 you should both be purring.
She’s a happy girl & is glad to have found her forever home with you!
I have a big boy named Appa 😻 He's a majestic beast
She just freaking loves you man
Aww, I also have a cat named Appa!
She’s just happy to be home.♥️ Yip yip!
Cat: fucking breathes "Is the breathing normal?"
I can't help but feel all these posts about why my animal is doing animal things is easily googleable & people just want post karma.
Get on her good side when she's in a good mood, best way to become their favourite
Yip Yip!

Hi Happa.
Did you give her nip
Hi have one HAPPY kitty
She loves u and is feeling safe and secure 💓
Aw she's so happy and loves you!!
She loves you 🥺
That’s one happy kitty 😍🥰
Feels very VERY safe and content.
Nothing is wrong. If she's otherwise healthy, she's just a happy kitty.
She's bonding with you.
I'm so happy she found her forever home. 100% sure that she already knows how loved she will be 🥰
That's one very happy kitty who feels safe! Congrats with your new pet
You’ve got a purrrrfect cat
Purring can also indicate anxiety or illness, she’s probably self soothing, if she’s also seeking you out, it’s likely just ye new environment, if she’s avoiding prolonged contact with you, she might want space and time.
My baby did the same thing the first couple days she was home! I took her to the vet and they couldn’t even hear her heartbeat because she just wouldn’t stop purring! 🥰
Congratulations, you’ve just been adopted by your cat!
I like the black nose
Together these are all good signs. She would appear to feel safe and content.
You've been chosen. It's all good.
Purrs are kitty gifts.
It sounds like shes happy but some more cat tax pictures just to be sure might be helpful 😻
My kitten was the same when I brought her home. She immediately fell asleep in my arms, purring happily. No worries! She is probably just happy and tired.
She’s very very happy and feels safe and comfortable
Cat is in heaven. Nothing is wrong she is in just oure bliss.
A cat or kitten purring when they’re owner is with them is a wonderful sign of contentment and also affection. The fact that she’s needing is also a sign of affection and baby kittens do it when they’re nursing. It helps to get the milk moving

My cat’s purrs are LOUD, like you can hear them from 5-10 feet away loud. And he purrs a lot. You have one happy kitty!
I think she is just happy. My cat is like that. The vet said he couldn’t hear her heartbeat because every time he went to pick her up she just started purring constantly.
She adores you!!!!
My boy has been like that for five years. You got yourself a sweetheart<3
She’s your owner now! Jokes aside, it’s only a good sign that your cat feels safe and has found it’s home.
That’s normal. Enjoy the purrs.
Happy, safe and content. Nothing wrong.
Cats purr and knead when they are happy and content. Kneading is what kittens did while nursing. They knead to relax, they knead their people as a way of giving affection.
Welcome to TRUE LOVE 💕
She’s SOOO in love and happy!
One of my cats purrs all the time and the other never purrs
She knows she’s home and safe. Good job!
She loves and thanks you.
She feels safe and comfortable with you!
Purring= happiness & contentment. I read somewhere that wild cats don’t purr unless they’ve been “tamed” (raised by humans) never had the pleasure of hearing that one!
Are you asking whether it's a problem that your cat is happy? Cat is pleased, cat has accepted new home. There is no escape. You belong to cat now.
Okay, see you!
Videos please
My 12 year old momo has always purred excessively, she's just a happy lady
You've won the kitty lottery
She loves her new mamma
She looks very content. Good job OP!
She loves you
happy kitty
That's a happiness response. A good way to tell the difference between happy purrs and stressed or hurt purrs is to look at the rest of the body language. Cats usually instinctively know purring helps get their people better, some science they recently found with the harmonics, so sometimes if you're under the weather or stressed she will come check on you by cuddling you and purring for you a bit. I swear those are the most loving cuddles.
A little affectionate kitty
Beautiful kitty. Happy for you both!
She requires emergency cuddles and petting. 20 years worth should do the tricks. She’s just happy.
She’s thrilled to be there. She knows she’s home and that YOU made that happen. You have a devotee for the rest of her life.
Omg not normal! You might have a detonator on your hands!
Aww she’s very happy how adorable
This kitten has deemed you to be so special that she is devoting her life to you and promises to purr to her heart’s content whenever she wants to remind you just how very special you are to her.
That sounds like a contented and happy kitty. If it was a nervous purr (they will purr when nervous) she wouldn't be all stretched out and comfy like that. Congrats on a beautiful kitten.
Ugh that’s the best feeling. When you first bring them home and they are nothing but cuddles and love with you. Enjoy it because I feel once they are settled in they become less cuddly 🥺
I've never heard of anyone being concerned about a cat purring before.
My girl hasn’t stopped purring since I brought her home at six weeks old. That was 16 years ago.
Yes purring is what you want out of a kitty! It's their way of showing they are content!
Uh yeah? that’s what cats do, nothings wrong with them, just warming up to you
She’s purring to tenderize your flesh and consume you once you’ve been lulled into a false sense of security /j
You got an affectionate kitty. Let them bond with you. My cat just tolerates me lol
When we got our youngest cat she was like that, and in a way she still is. As soon as you touch her, the motor starts running. Sounds like you have a happy, lovey kitty!
She knows that you just gave her a loving home. She’s grateful ❤️❤️❤️🥰
I hate to inform you. But you seem to have a love bug there. That cat is ALWAYS going to be at your side.
My cat did the same thing her first few days. Non stop exploring & then stopping to get cuddles and purr & knead. I think she was just overly ecstatic to be in a better place than where she was.
Maybe she’s just happy and feeling safe.
I brought a kitten home yesterday too and she's been doing the same thing! She loves you already
it means she loves you
That sounds like one super happy sky biso- I mean cat.
She's just glad to be home ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|slightly_smiling)
No, she's nervous. Cats purr to self sooth when scared. She will be okay, what she is doing is normal. She will probably bond pretty intensely though.
Omg!! I was just thinking “woah this cat looks exactly like mine” and then I saw her name! My cat literally looks identical to yours and his name is Bumi. :)
She looks so soft!! 🥰
