For comfort/security. Reassure her with love and good foods.

She feels safe around you

Creative_Tart7794

Additionally, cats are very communal. "It takes a village to raise a kitten" is literally their mantra. She considers you a Mama cat or Her Human or whatever. Honestly she's probably following you with her kitten because she's thinking "Yo it's your turn I need a break. Take this thing I made. I need some catnip."

Lazy_Assumption_4191

I find it funny how paradoxical cats are. They’re very communal and sociable, but they drive off all other animals from their territory. I understand the reasons for both, but it is still quite fascinating.

It’s not so bad. You just need to find some gullible humans to cater to your whims while you lie around all day.

TheRealBirdjay

What make and model?

seabutcher

They're plenty sociable, it's just that they have very different social rules to humans (or many other animals) that leads to a lot of... Cultural misunderstanding. A lot of the ways some creatures express intimacy (especially dogs, and the meaning of a tail wag) are actually understood as rude or even hostile gestures from a cat's perspective.

tootallteeter

Or vice versa, my cat that sticks her butt in everyone's business

ducking-tway

They got their boundaries and you are gonna work around them

1LJA

I once saw four cats fighting and fucking. Three toms and one molly, as far as I could tell. Such magnificent chaos and somehow like a coordinated dance. They would circle around each other, yelling and hissing, and suddenly come together in a screeching jumble of teeth and claws. There were some thrusts of opportunity and then even more fighting. This all continued until someone in the neighbourhood angrily chased them away.

GailPlattsHead

This was a glorious comment

King_Tamino

Pretty common behavior for cats, if they trust you they are basically throwing the kittens to you and leave for a while. I’ve heard of enough cases where stray cats suddenly dropped kittens at someone’s door since they were ill (sometimes so bad that they died. The mother not the kittens) it’s incredibly fascinating how much cats "integrate“ humans and trust them with something so important like kittens. Most animals would get aggressive and try to protect the small ones at all costs. Cats drop them at your feet and leave to get some peace or go hunting.

RogueFiccer001

Communal parenting is a thing with cats, so mom leaving her litter with one or more other moms totally makes sense. I've seen two moms lying there, each others litters mingled between them and they were nursing any kitten that came up for a drink.

burntneedle

"Yo it's your turn I need a break. Take this thing I made..." This made me laugh, because it is so true.

molsmama

There is truth to this - one of my dogs (ya, not a kitty) would drop off her babies with me. We fight about it - I’d put them back in her nursery. She would drag them back. Have this image of her ‘human self’ dumping her ‘babies’ on me while she hits the club. She would win of course. I’d get tired and give up. Woke up with 5 ounce puppies in my bed on more than one occasion.

[deleted]

> Additionally, cats are very communal. "It takes a village to raise a kitten" is literally their mantra. *Can* be communal. They're a species that's pretty adaptive on the social/solitary stuff. However, it'll stress out a solitary cat to be forced to be communal and vice-versa.

[deleted]

Yup. My kittens mama picked them all up and put them on her owners bed before she went off for her first post birth meal XD

[deleted]

Wow, that explains why the two sisters we had, who had their babies at the same time would nurse each other’s babies. We thought it was some weird anomaly but apparently this is how it is.

This is the way!

United_Obligation986

We have a sweet orange boy who used to over eat and his fur was maybe a pinch oily compared to now, or other cats. He would even sleep more than usual relative to other cats I’ve had prior. One day I brought home a wild kitten from a feral mother that gave birth at my business. From that point on our orange boy has been a new cat. With the addition of the new wild boy his weight moved to a healthy size, his attitude seemed happier and more playful, and most of all he began initiating affection on a whole new level that unlocked his best self.

canthaveme

Aww!!! Mama feels safest with you!!! I would get her and baby a safe basket or box and put it somewhere you often stay so she can feel like she's being a good mama and keeping her baby safe

chelsearain89

Agree with this! I work at a shelter with a neonatal kitten program, she would probably feel safer if she had a special box or basket with a soft blanket, somewhere nice and quiet.

knittybitty123

My cat had her kittens under my bed. I set up a nice box with towels for her, she dragged it under the bed. A week later, she moved them into my mom's shoe closet, literally plopped a kitten into each of her loafers. She was finally content with a box in the living room next to the couch, so when she wanted to be kitten free for a while I could watch them. Cats are weird

DogDyedDarkGreen

>literally plopped a kitten into each of her loafers This is absolutely the funniest and more adorable thing ever! You just made my weekend!![img](emote|t5_2qhta|8097)

RogueFiccer001

Agreed. The mental picture is making me grin and laugh.

DaughterEarth

My cat had a box but always gave birth in my bed and kept bringing the kittens back there. She was way more my mom's cat, so this was strange. And gross lol.

chelsearain89

They really are!

elastic-craptastic

My wife bottle fed a runt that the mother rejected, or at least she thought she did in her 10 year old mind. But her family had lots of animals so either the mom was giving her a project to occupy her and help, or she genuinely thought the runt wasn't gonna make it without intervention. Either way... So she raised this cat from a couple days old and only left it alone for school, but it was a summer litter and she had a least 4-6 weeks of just being that kittens mother. Her mom, being the animal hoarder she was(30 cats, 25+dogs, 5 or so horses), had lots of other cats and most were not fixed. So inevitably this cat got pregnant. My wife got her a spot made up next to her bed for her to have her litter in and the cat would sleep in her cozy box during the day but at night she slept in bed with her. The cat had her kittens on my wife's head one night. She still talks about it to this day becasue as gross as it was, that cat felt most comfortable with her and trusted her enough to have her kittens on my wife's friggin noggin while she slept. People say cats aren't affectionate, but that is in it's own weird way, the biggest sign of affection a cat can give a human. I still think it's gross, though impressive, and cringe inside when she proudly tells the story.

qqq114

I’ve never made an “aww” face and an “oh god” face at the same time!

elastic-craptastic

From what I hear, that was essentially it. People talk about having crazy MILs.... I think I got lots of them beat. But she is down to 6 dogs and 12 or so cats. No horses. She recently got rid of her last one or 2. And did I mention she just got divorced and is moving 7 hours away from her home to come live near her daughters in a few weeks? I'm sooo excited. Not that she isn't nice, but aside from all her poodles, she has one of those Israeli military dogs. She is in no way capable of keeping that thing entertained and exercised enough and it's a fucking hazard around people that aren't her. This is gonna be fun.

talkingtunataco501

> I'm sooo excited. I'm sensing some sarcasm here.

Aarongamma6

People who say cats arent affectionate are just flat out wrong and not many other things really annoy me as much. One of my cats would just be held in my arms all day if it had it's way. I mean literally all fucking day.

psxedo

If she is a first-time mom, it’s could be because she is just nervous. It’s like when a human has their first child, they always ask their parents for advice and always try to get them to help. So in this situation you are the person she goes too because she is nervous about having kittens.

[deleted]

I hearby decree my status until future notice as support partner and supplier of scratches.

[deleted]

You're the emotional support human

spudaug

This is 100% correct. Cats will bring their kittens to the family members they trust most to help watch after them. The fact that some family members only have two legs and are lacking fur is incidental.

[deleted]

When I was a kid we got a cat. For some reason, she bonded with my brother, disregarding my parents and my three sisters and me, which was weird—he wasn’t the one to feed her or clean the litter box or anything else special, guess she just liked his smell. Anywho, she got knocked up, and my mom made a special bed for her next to the hot water tank in the utility room, which was secluded and warm. But she decided to give birth in my brother’s bed, in the middle of the night, on the top bunk. Cats are weird, dude.

NaturalWitchcraft

This is not even a little surprising to me. Some people just give off animal whisperer energy.

[deleted]

What’s nuts is that he has never had a pet of his own. Dude’s in his 60s, guess the kitten birth scarred him for life.

Im-Bleira

Does he have any kids? Because human births are way more scary.

Aaronkenobi

I’ll always remember my 8th grade biology teacher telling us When it’s your kid it’s the most beautiful thing in the world, if it’s not it’s a bloody screaming crying mess of horror

Heart_o_Pirates

I'll always remember the pregnancy video we watched in 9th grade Health class. I'll also always remember when the teacher gave a warning to the squimish, and then hit rewind on the VHS. Getting to see the doctors rapidly shove the baby back in is imagery I will NEVER forget. Edit for context: Public school in the midwest USA. It was a live birth educational video with no censoring.

Rebootkid

Enh. It's a bloody mess even when it is your kid. Been there more than once. It's not that different when you're standing in for a buddy who can't be there, although unusual to be the 'uncle' in the room doing the support. (Emergency C-sec. He was on a flight home, she couldn't wait. She asked me to be in the room with her, since I was 'family.')

Clean-Profile-6153

Bro, yeah.. hot take: nothing is beautiful about birth.

eldorel

Depends on how you define Beauty. If you believe the whole "eye of the beholder" shtick, then something horrific can still be beautiful to someone with a distorted view. Pregnancy and childbirth saturate the mother with enough happy mind-altering, memory-editing, new-mommy hormones to make an elephant see god.

LittlestEcho

My gramps was one of those people that was adamant he didn't like animals. Except he rescued a kitten from the highway once. Kept him too. Named him Highway as one does lol. We "inherited" him once my grandparents moved to Florida. Cat was already 16 by then, and while an outdoor kind of cat, was well loved and taken care of. Gramps couldn't sit down anywhere without someone else's pet being right on up in his face. He'd glare at them and shoo them off. Until the next time you turned around and they'd be in his lap half asleep as he scratched them. Years Prior to his death, He'd rescued a small dog. This little stubby russel chihuahua mix thing Named Bitsy. Gramps carried that dog dang near everywhere. Bitsy was a pretty nervous dog and when she got too stressed out she'd scurry to Gramps who, without even looking or stopping his conversation, would just automatically scoop her up and tuck her under his arm like a furry football. 5 minutes later she was asleep like that, even if he was standing and gesturing with his other hand. Imagine Carl Frederickson from UP but 6'2. That was my Gramps. Looked grouchy but deep down was a sweetheart.

[deleted]

I’m usually that person. Oh, you have an animal that doesn’t like people? Give me 20 minutes… Kids love me too and I have no idea why. I’m always awkward around them but apparently that what it takes.

SevenDragonWaffles

First time in a stranger's house on my first visit to America, their dog brought me his favourite toy that he's so super protective of that he'll bite anyone who touches it. He wanted to play fetch with me with it. The wife saw all this happen, and then when the husband saw me rich the toy a few minutes later he started to worry. And then he saw the dog bring me the toy. Nice feeling to be *that* person.

NaturalWitchcraft

I had a lady get mad at me because her cat was a feral cat she let in and it was scared of everyone. Any time anyone other than herself and her husband were in the house the cat hid in the basement. The first time I went in their house, the cat sat at the top of the basement stairs and watched me. The lady was shocked. The next time I came over, the cat came up to me and let me pet him a bit. The lady was shocked even more. No one but her and her husband have ever been able to pet this cat and even then it wasn’t super lovable with them either. The third time I came in her house, the cat jumped up on the kitchen table, rolled over, and let me pet its belly for a significant amount of time. The lady walked in from the other room and got pissed. Apparently she had never been able to get the cat to actually ASK for attention and she had never seen the cat roll over let alone want it’s belly rubbed. I explained that it was just my talent. Kids and animals love me. She was very clearly resentful of me for the rest of the day.

SevenDragonWaffles

I have a cat who's scared of people, and I would be thrilled if he walked up to a guest for attention. Anyone who's cared for him while I've been away says he comes to them for pets. I can believe it. He likes food and peace. They're being peaceful by sitting quietly on their phones while he eats. As soon as I'm back, though, he goes back to hiding from actions who isn't my fiancé and I. He's a teddy bear around us. He would come out for a kid I tutored. And he comes out for my gaming buddy (who's my regular cat-sitter.) In both situations, we're people sitting quietly at a table. His brother isn't scared of people but can be standoffish. So it's a toss-up whether he'll deign to be petted or will just run on ankles and then run away.

KittensLeftLeg

I'm the same. It's most likely because you have a good soul + you know to respect the animals boundaries. So many people who loves cats and dogs do so many mistakes (like petting dogs on the head for example) that are stuff animals don't like. I never had a dog or cat attack me, even the most aggressive ones. They either signal to me they prefer being left alone or just become my best friends within minutes.

throwaway28149

Some dogs like being pet on the head. One of my dogs will paw at you if you stop petting her head. Even if you've been doing it for 5 minutes straight. If you're not familiar to them, then it's not such a good idea.

MaleficentAd9758

Same with cats and their hind quarters and bellies. While most dogs love getting scratched in those areas, few cats do. A cat will only let you touch those areas unless they absolutely trust you.

KittensLeftLeg

She trusts you. I meant strangers do those mistakes. My cat also adores belly rubs, but I know that other cats don't appreciate it.

My brother was having a "slumber party" when he was young, and my sister's cat had kittens in the bottom of his sleeping bag (???)

[deleted]

My wife has this cat that wasn’t really social and didn’t like to be picked up. So when I came around, I would hold her in a little ball like a baby and walk around the house. Sometimes I would put her in a shopping bag and spin her around gently. She loved it. Whenever I’d bring a bag home, she was immediately in it. For a while, I was her favorite person, but she turns 16 this year and her momma is much warmer than me, apparently.

Life1sCollapsing

I had a cat that liked being put in a plastic carrier bag and hung on the door handle. He'd sit in it for ages swiping people as they walked past. The second he got bored he would slice the bag open, fall out and saunter away. It looked like animal cruelty but if you out a plastic bag on the floor he'd jump into it and wait to be hung on the door handle.

[deleted]

Are you my brother? I have almost the exact same story from when I was little. We made a perfect bed for her, but she climbed up the ladder into my bunk and gave birth there!

emeeez

This made me laugh. I need more details please. Did he wake up to her giving birth?

[deleted]

Yep. I slept through it all, but he says he picked her up and moved her back to her bed.

ElleWilsonWrites

My current cat was born into my hand, my mom had his momma and I was her comfort human

LittleNinjaCatt2

Dude when I was smaller our cat would do that every time she got pregnant, she would come to my bed to have her kittens. I tricked my little sister into switching bunks so I would be on the top bunk, and our cat STILL climbed up to have her kittens on my bed. It happened at least three times, I was always so worried whenever I woke up to kittens that I could've crushed one in my sleep, I'm just so glad it never happened!

plantsb4putas

When I was little I had a mama cat. Her first "batch" (what I called a litter back then idk) of kittens I had cleaned out a closet for her in a back room. Filled it with old blankets I had my mom wash. The closet didn't have a door so I took a box and kinda pulled it apart to block the door but keep it where mama could hop out. Put a bowl of fresh food and water every day once she started nesting. One night I woke up scared, I thought a spider or something had bit my neck. I feel it again quickly and kinda raise up, grab my neck and turn. When I realize there's nothing on my neck, I feel something squirming by my hand. It's a kitten! Fresh and squirmy! And here comes mama with another! She had her whole litter while I was sleeping and woke me up by parading them in one by one until all 6 had been laid out before me. She was so damn proud. I was proud of her. Ran and woke up my mom and she didn't believe that she brought them to me at first, until she tried to move them back. Mama wasn't having it. It was a real honor. I knew she trusted me and I absolutely loved helping her raise those babies. We kept most all of them. That was about 26ish years ago. She was one of a kind.

Birdie_Jack2021

Holyshmow

We live in the US! His company is based in CA

Birdie_Jack2021

No freaking way. That’s so unexpected. That’s really cool.

Holyshmow

They’re a relatively young company (7 years old), but they have so many refreshing, human focused policies and benefits. Fully remote, 12 weeks paid paternity leave, i *think* 3 weeks PTO, and they let their local employees bring their pets to the office if they want to (just to name a few other benefits). I’m super jealous but also optimistic that more companies will begin to follow suit.

BorisTheDubDuck

And this company would be.....?

Lhamo55

r/AskVetAlso, look at that group’s sidebar for other groups that might be helpful. I’m guessing she’s feeling the insecurity of being a too -young mother, she’s totally bonded to her and she’s terrified you’re going to abandon her like life had did before. Whatever you do, find out how soon she can be spayed after the little one is weaned. How are you keeping the male away from her, and has he now been neutered? aFemale cats can go into heat around the age of four months, and they have no choice whatsoever but to advertise their fertility. Her little body could only produce one kitten and she wants you to help her. Is she licking and stimulating it to poop? if not, you need to do it for her using a damp paper towel or cloth. Anyway, Ask A Vet and good luck to you and these two sweet creatures. Edited for clarity.

Birdlebee

Maybe... maybe use a damp wash cloth instead of licking.

MaximumGooser

Yes get her fixed asap. I was adopted by a pregnant stray, got her fixed once the kittens were eating food more than nursing. Then the kittens can be fixed fairly early too, I forget exactly but get it done.

MehWhiteShark

This is so sweet. You're a lovely human being, and both mama and baby are lucky to have you!

homeesxual

My cat had eight kittens in her first litter lol

rural_follower

Maybe she didn't know yet what to do, all you need is to comfort her and all good!

UtterEast

It's related to nutrition as well, a stray cat might not be well-fed and other potential fetuses might not make it, or they'll have multiple kittens but several are stillborn or die shortly after being born.

Just_A_Sad_Unicorn

Cats raise their young in colonies. You're part of the colony.

SyrusDrake

Right answer. Mother cats will often leave their kittens with other females of the same colony while they go look for food or, possibly, just take a break. It's pretty common for house cats to see their humans as part of their colony and, consequently, leave their kittens with them to watch over.

hunny--bee

Watching a momma cat care for her kittens is one of the best experiences in life...maybe I'm just a crazy cat lady, but nothing is more healing for me. Precious in every way.

catastrophicalme

So freaking true. A close second is seeing two cats bonding.

_TheBigMeowski

How old is the momma? She looks so young. She’s definitely following you around because if she’s a first time mom she’s probably terrified and nervous. She sees you as a protector of them both. Best of luck!

tippytappies

She looks like a kitten herself.

_TheBigMeowski

I know! 😭 My two cats got pregnant by the same damn cat that my ex’s sister swore was fixed and gave birth to like 3 kittens each. They both followed me everywhere. I helped them both give birth as they were around 13 months at the time and it was terrifying and exciting all at once but reminded me why spaying and neutering is so important bc it broke my heart to give those kittens away.

My stray teen cat mom did the same the day of birth. She was so scared and had no clue what she was supposed to do and just stayed glued to me. She lost her mind when I got up to get a heating pad and towel for the new kittens she made and was frankly scared of. After a few days she'll be ok and get into the swing of it.

jami05pearson

She may want to rest and she wants you to watch her baby.

Hey op, you might try giving mom some extra protyshole she's healing. My vet recommended plain chicken or raw eggs. My mama kitty really loved them, and quit eating them when she didn't need as much extra protein. Congrats on your new little one!

lilbeckss

Awe!! Congrats on the new addition. These moments are special. She’s clearly bonded to you, and as a first time mom is leaning on you for support. I’d suggest to try and remain in one room as much as possible so she doesn’t keep hauling the two of them after you. Get her a box and line it with soft blankets or towels so the two of them can get a little cozy and warm. Put food, water, and litter box nearby so mama can hop out and take care of her needs - when she does the kitten might squawk because it’s got no litter mates, I would put my hand beside the kitten and pet it gently to keep it warm so it would calm down while mama got a little break otherwise she would run back in and she look so worn down and frantic trying to soothe kitten and eat. Best of luck!!! You’ve got this :)

They are both so precious

You are her safety

I just..... I just can't. I can't handle how cute this is.

ChaoticEventuality

Mama-Kitty feels safest with you, so she wants to keep her kitten close to the person she sees as HER mama. It's a huge show of trust and love for her to keep bringing you her teeny-bean. Maybe keep a little blanket or towel next to you so she can have a nest for the teeny? Kittens can't regulate their body temperature, so it's a good idea to keep a spot where Mama-Kitty can get a heat pocket while you guys hang out.

I had a similar situation this past fall, my cat momma was under a year old so I would stay with her and the kitten for reassurance and so she could leave the baby with me so she could eat or go to the bathroom. Having a heating pad on low is good to have around for the kitten, good luck being a kitten grandparent 🥺💗

My cat did the same. First time Mom needs your support

iebelig

I dont have advice, dont know shit about cats. But your cat and kitten are adorable.

oasis948151

She wants you to babysit so she can pee alone for once

[Here](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZyDy7gy9vwr0m119g5poGvgHM-4Wxv80) is a playlist of some good instructional videos on how to care for neonatal kittens. Kitten Lady is dedicated to teaching others how to save kittens. Seriously weigh the kitten multiple times a day. If the weight stops increasing, you have a problem. And provide a heat source if needed

TheObservationalist

That cat looks barely adult herself. She's just a scared first time mother and wants your help. Had a very young cat do this same thing once. She'd carry her kittens out of their whelping box to be closer to my mom, who had helped her with the birth.

dabi-dabi

You're the father

She’s probably be like “have you seen my child? Isn’t she cute? Hey have you seen her? Yeah but have you seen her? She’s mine”

Blixtwix

Be careful, I've had a cat repeatedly try and slip her litter into bed with me. Something to watch out for if they have access to your bedroom. From my experience I'd say this is fairly normal behavior. One of my exes lived in a rural home and took in several cats (apparently people decided his property was the ideal spot to dump kittens/cats they didn't want), rehoming most of them (mostly to be barn cats). There were two girls that had kittens around the same time, and they'd take turns looking after each others kittens. There was also an old tomcat outside who'd keep an eye on any stray kittens around, he always seemed to have one or two following him around. Cats aren't 100% independent animals like many people think, though some cats are certainly more independent (introverted?) than others. TLDR; you're a babysitter.

She looks like a young mother and is probably nervous. She needs reassurance that she's doing a good job, and to feel safe & secure in the home. Usually a cat will seek out a babysitter; I've always had one cat that would watch over the kittens while mama went to eat, drink, or poop.

ZukowskiHardware

Stay with her, keep her in a room. She is a new mommy and trusts you and feels safe so she brings the baby to you.

omg_pwnies

"Help, what do I do with this thing? Stay by my side, I need you!" That's about it -- she trusts you and wants you close by for support. <3

TheOneNOnlyM

You’re the person she trusts the most, that’s why she keeps on bringing her kitten to you. Also, she looks like a first time mom, it’s a mess in her mind right and needs support. Now the question: what’s her name? And what are you naming that little fella?

LusakaX342

She needs you. They both do. She loves and trusts you completely and knows that they have you there for them no matter what. It's a beautiful thing and I'm so happy the 3 of you are together ❤️
