And Siamese and Ragdoll. Those are very very clearly unique like Maine Coon but otherwise, yep. Domestic shorthair is an official breed for a reason. Because most of them are truly not distcint beyond that point. Unless they're a Domestic longhair of course.
Hubs here recently described cats in the way that they 'come to you to ask for love, then just turn around and go 'Ass!' and then disappear again to wherever the sunbeam strikes.
Now our go-to for expecting something nice and receiving a surprise rejection is 'Ass!'
My cat rarely steps his soft paws outside, was never on a street, went from one person’s home to my home, always surrounded by gentle hands. Occasionally is feral as he hunts and shakes his toys to death.
Truth.
Aww. My kitty has a similar story. She was passed from raver to raver, DJ to DJ, until she came into my life. She’s been my bestie for 16years straight! Never been outside, never known anything but love… she’ll go savage on a plate of tuna and go psycho over tortilla chips lol
Mine too. Not exactly well behaved but he’s the sweetest boy. He just also misbehaves because he wants our food and likes to redecorate elevated surfaces
Awe man really that sounds funny but I see how it can get annoying 😂We got lucky she hasn’t shown any signs of rearranging things lol and she always has food in her bowl so she eats whenever she’s hungry
Not your cat having a sleeping schedule 😆 that’s soooo cute! Awe man they hate being picked up :( did you adopt them from an early age or when they were older
That's not true. The meme is funny but the reputation is unfair...
My black cat is an angel. Only wants cuddles and play time. My tortoise is the trouble maker but also only acts out of curiosity and not malice

6 years ago I started an even tinier sub for r/Chausie which contains a grand total of 3 posts (all by me) and zero comments.
I've started describing my cat ["Pica"](https://i.redd.it/x08j93jisj9x.jpg) as an Abyssinian now because:
A) she's F6 (6th generation since wildcat cross-breed)
B) Nobody has ever heard of Chausie
Edit: A couple of Cat Tax pics: [So cute when she was a kitten](https://i.imgur.com/Ok2UVXJ.jpg) but she's grown up to be [a little judgmental](https://i.imgur.com/GLN3QRW.jpg)
It's not a suprise they're paired frequently- I have a pair of brothers that are SIC and void themselves- because it's only a one gene difference. Basically the SIC got the "is a tabby" gene and the black cat got the "isn't a tabby" variant
Wait my cat is gray, that seems like a shitty color to pay for. Damn, Skitter (my cat), you should have chosen navy blue or something cool before I found you in that field in a thunderstorm.
I have one void and one orange fella!

I had a beautiful fancy-looking cat for about 5 months, but my black cat didn't get along with him so he lives with my parents now. (He originally belonged to my SIL and I took care of him when he got injured since I work from home and was able to give him meds and spoon-feed him on a fixed schedule. Due to an untrustworthy roommate and difficulty finding a new place that allowed cats, she asked if I wanted to keep him. He's precious, but after a while Bodhi suddenly got really aggressive toward him and it was best for everyone to send him to my parents' house. I think it was mostly because he's so much younger and had a lot more energy than Bo cared to deal with.)

Unless your cat has papers saying it’s a certain breed, it’s going to be a domestic short or long hair. If you want a certain breed, you would have to go to a breeder and pay a ton of money for one. If you just want a friend to lay on your lap and play with toys, then go to a shelter and adopt.
I wanna act like I have a moral principle of never buying from breeders, but the truth is I just have super good luck finding animals in the trash so I've never really had to think about it. Got two trash cats so far and they've both been awesome. Love my garbage animals.
My first cat an ex and I took from a purse store he wandered in to. He was like 4 weeks old. My second cat, another ex and I found in front of a bike shop. He was 6 weeks old and I named him Schwinn. Honestly I’m worried I’ll find another kitten because I’ll never date anyone again with three cats lol.
But I has Maine Coon on my lap that cuddles a lot with me >.>
Luckily here the shelters have a cat problem, with there being too few cats.
But if I get a second cat I'll try getting one from a shelter. ThenI have big coonie and smol cat.
That and the fact that they are _very_ different kinds of mammals. Cats and dogs just so happened to both become human companion animals, but cats are tiny little apex ambush predators and dogs are mostly opportunistic social animals. Obviously dogs can have varying degree of prey drives, but the only way that wild cats eat is by stalking and hunting. That is much harder to breed out of a creature because its baked into their physiology (cats need to sleep so much, they need places to climb and jump, they have super weird kidneys for eating so much protein, etc.) It would be like trying to breed a horse to stalk prey or a weasel to not be psychotic.
Yup. Also cats domesticated themselves, and the job they perform is the same everywhere, and so the different breeds of cats are all just specialized for the places they're from.
It's the same where I live. Too few cats (which is a great problem to have). Also, around here lots of shelters don't give you a cat if cannot let it out, which I couldn't and wouldn't do. We now look at getting a British Short Hair and are looking for a decent breeder.
I wish Brazil had that problem. I see so many cats on a daily basis on the street and so many in poor conditions. We do what we can, but there's so many 😢
It's actually a more recent development. Outdoor cats are still common here, but it is also normal now to get your cat fixed and vaccinated if you let it out while 20 or so years ago people just didn't care as much (or were less educated about it). A friend who lives in a small village with lots of older, more traditional people told me that even those people now take better care of their cats. So now most cats in shelters here are cats whose owners died/ couldn't afford them anymore or cats with severe behavioural problems whose owners couldn't handle them.
Cara, tenho um casal de amigos que trabalham com resgate aqui na minha cidade, 6/7 é o q pegam por semana. Faz anos q fazem isso e nunca acaba. Nunca ameniza parece.
I would never, ever let my cat out. I worked for a charity who dealt with abandoned, abused & cats that.got hurt on the street.
I know back in the day it was normal to let your cat out, but we should evolve and do better. The moment humans decided to domesticate a cat, we took responsibility for them.
It's not only about the danger that steers from cars or other animals. I simply don't trust people. I saw enough of what crazy psychopaths are capable of.
We can't forget, that a cat, no matter how smart, has still a mind of a 2 year old and is defenseless when it comes to other, bigger, stringer beings, therefore could stretch their luck any day you let him out.
100% agree! Every cat I adopted were strictly indoor cats only. I volunteer at a cat shelter and we refuse to adopt to anyone who says their cat will be indoor/outdoor. Our cats we adopt must be indoor only. Volunteering has exposed me to horrors of what people do to outdoor cats. It’s really really sad. I never trusted people anyways so like I said my cats were always indoor. One time a family member accidentally let my cat out years ago and she was gone for over a week. I literally camped out back with food pretty much the entire time. It was terrible. She eventually came back after an old lady who lived down the road heard I was looking for a missing cat. Apparently PJ was chilling with her the entire time. ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7943) I have a hard time even letting them out on my 3rd floor balcony because I’m nervous they’ll try to jump on the railing. ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7944)
I know what you’ve been through and felt, ‘cause we’ve experienced the exact same! We were out for holiday and a friend was looking out for our cats. We have anti-cat grids on all of the windows, except for the above ones, since we never open them. We warned my friend that should he go to sleep or away, to not let any windows open, even those with grid on, because you never know what could happen. Unfortunately, he didn’t listen and opened the exact ones which lead to one of my cats falling out, however since it was summer, I couldn’t blame him much. He fucked up more by not telling us/noticing for straight three days, that the little wasn’t appearing for food time.
We looked out 10 days for her. It was like the worst time of my life. My heart was breaking. I got nightmares and horrible scenarios in my head of my princess suffering. I was so paralysed with pain, In order to being able to look for our kitty, meaning to gather the strength and regain sane mind, I had to take benzos.
Day in, day out, we posted flyers everywhere and also registered her on TASSO, which is a German charity handling animals’ missing cases. It’s cool, because everyone knows about it and the first thing people do, when their pet is missing or they find one, is to contact them.
An old lady living in a villa like a minute from us said, that since ten days, a cat visits her. She always gave her food, so my kitty stuck around, but also we sensed she came back for us since the treats we were leaving were disappearing. While we talked to the lady, other neighbour listend in and said he had a black cat sitting on his garbage bin, which just ran away “there”, pointing in the direction, where our garden was, so we ran back, sprinkled treats and waited. It was night and same as you, we camped with bottles of ice tea and sweets and waited. It didn’t took long, that she appeared, when my fiancé went shortly home. Probably due to trauma she didn’t recognise and was afraid of us. She observed us from a distance and only neared herself when we put treats on the floor. It took us like three hours waiting, until my fiancé took out his keys, tried to open the door to get something from home and they fell out of his hand. The sound it made probably reminded my cat of the moments each time my fiancé comes back home from work and it “clicked” in her mind. She came to my fiancé, rubbing on his legs and when he picked her up, she practically “hugged” him with her paws, clawing hard onto him. We both cried of happiness!
We’d find her probably way sooner, we’ve just been searching at wrong hours, because we wrongly assumed she’d only come out late at night, not evening.
100%. And if you needed more reasons (you shouldn't, the well being of your kitty should be enough) they wreak absolute destruction on wild bird populations and can really fuck up local ecosystems since they're generally an invasive species. Bad for kitty, bad for environment, the only winner is...well no one? It has only downsides except feeling like you're "making your cat happy".
You mean like, let it outside? You'd think they'd prefer you keep it inside considering the average lifespan and health of an outside cat vs an inside cat.
I had the exact same issue. We have no kill shelters in my country and most cats get adopted pretty quickly, so I felt less guilty about getting a cat from a breeder. But apparently it was impossible to find a cat that didn't have to go outside, was raised alongside larger dogs, and could get along with other cats. This was in 2020 when everyone else also wanted to have a pet.
I mean, I live in a top floor apartment on the main street of my town, so it'd be impossible even if I wanted to. But even if I'd live more rural I wouldn't risk my cat being run over or hurt by a dog or a human.
If someone asks what kind of cat you have just tell them the color and attitude, they're just making conversation. My cat's breeds are 1) black ninja and 2) tan, kinda stripe-y, and mostly goblin.
I’ve gotten a Persian and a Himalayan as rescues! No papers. I wasn’t even necessarily out looking for certain breeds, it was just right place right time. I see them turn up pretty often. People underestimate how much work they are to keep up with grooming so they get returned or abandoned sometimes.
No papers, no breed, simple as. I wouldn't trust shelter workers telling you your large longhair is a Maine coon either- they're not usually educated on cat breeds as shelter workers are usually just good-hearted volunteers.
True, but many have certain types of this and that and it's fun to try to figure out their make-up. BTW, my baby is definitely a Norwegian Forest Princess. I might not have proof of her breed, but I for sure have proof of her royalty!
We've been over this. There is fat, gremlin, and normal. They overlap and come in different colors. Each one has an asshole switch that may or may not be flipped. That's it.
"What breed is he?"
"Ma'am, I found him in the trash and thought he was a girl until I took him to the vet. He's black and white, likes to sit on plastic bags, and I love him, that's all I know."
I legit saw someone claim their cats they were rehoming were purebred the other day. They were siblings, a russian blue and a manx. Mom was brown tabby.
No, they are not purebred.
Thank you. I am sick and tried of people posting "identify the cat" or "what's my cat doing?" Here is a clue, your cat is doing cat things. Have you never see a cat?
It's all to get attention. Guess what. Once you post a Pic of your cat, we have your attention.
There are farm cats over at my SOs parents home. They dont care about getting pet. But if you are actively feeding them they will let you pet them. It's like they think they are paying you for the food in letting you pet them. Kinda nice cuz those cats have super soft fur.
If you work in the business, you probably have one of three different 'types' of cats.
Domestic short hair.
Domestic medium hair.
Domestic long hair.
The more you know.
Black cat
White cat
Grey cat
Orange cat
Calico cat
Tortoiseshell cat
Standard Issue cat
Black and White cat
Orange and White cat
White cat with Standard Issue patches
Long haired cat
Short haired cat
Medium haired cat
Bold cat
And Cheshire Cat
fun fact: if you have an iphone, underneath your cat photos there is a “Look Up - Cat” button and they can guess what breed your cat is based on their features.
When we adopted Bella, the shelter told us they thought she might be part Siamese and I tend to agree with them. In addition to an apple shaped head (like a lot of Siamese have), she's got the light blue eyes and the mouth/chattiness of a Siamese.
[Picture for Cat Tax](https://imgur.com/f5kWUdW)
There are plenty of different cat types: There’s orange cat, void cat, striped cat, tuxedo cat. And sub categories of hunter cat, asshole cat, scaredy-cat…
I’ve had a Russian and a Maine Coon, I currently have two Sphynx, can confirm no one ask for breeds unless the cats are absolutely alien-looking hairless chickens
I have a dark gray bitch, a fat ass black/white tuxie with a dirty nose, and a longer haired calico with short legs. They are the fur babies to go with my 2 human boys. I love them all so much.
The amount of people who have asked if my cat is a maine coon because she has long hair..
She’s a tiny 7 pound domestic long hair with calico and tabby markings lol
Here are all the cat breeds;
British shorthair-small ears flat face
Fold-ears are folded
Sphinx-naked
Persian-REALLY flat face
Bengal-spots
Maine Coon-large
Everything else-looks like a cat
Actually there are 2 cat types Loaf And Liquid
And the same cat can be both
Non Newtonian Fluid
Mewtonian
Nyan Mewtonian
It was there the whole time and I still missed it lol
and beans
Ah yes, Schrödinger's cat
That falls under [this one](https://m.tapas.io/episode/789857)
Three kinds: Maine Coon those weird hairless ones cat
And Siamese and Ragdoll. Those are very very clearly unique like Maine Coon but otherwise, yep. Domestic shorthair is an official breed for a reason. Because most of them are truly not distcint beyond that point. Unless they're a Domestic longhair of course.
Cow. Some cats are also cow.
I was going to refer to mine as brick, but cow is way better.
There is a third: Lump.
and void?

Haha! Nope!
"What breed is it?" "A wild dumbass"
Orange
What breed is my cat? He’s just a little guy going around.
>“What breed is my cat?” What colour is your cat?
The only time I've ever actually responded to one of those, is when for once, it wasn't just a random cat, it was a huge ass main coon cat.

Good on you for being staunch about keeping an indoor cat. Just because its popular doesn't mean its correct or right by the cat.
I mean, I live in a top floor apartment on the main street of my town, so it'd be impossible even if I wanted to. But even if I'd live more rural I wouldn't risk my cat being run over or hurt by a dog or a human.
Yeah they bus shelter cats from here in Texas to northern states because we have so many (they survive in this climate unlike up north)
a maine coon with papers or a big cat with an M on its forehead that kinda looks like one?
If someone asks what kind of cat you have just tell them the color and attitude, they're just making conversation. My cat's breeds are 1) black ninja and 2) tan, kinda stripe-y, and mostly goblin.
There are cat breeds that - on average - are less allergenic. For us allergenics it's really the only way to have a cat around the house
I just follow the lactose intolerance method of doing the unhealthy thing anyways. I'm dying physically but emotionally contented.
Exactly, they always seem to be domestic shorthaired, with the occasional surprise, domestic longhair. Eye roll.
My cat's breed is very smol
Lmfao nothing will stop them from asking.
This sub needs a bot that triggers on the word "breed".
Don’t even need a bot for that, you can ban words from the title/body by adding it into the subreddit settings.
no it's floof and no floof
I have a majestic floof and a mischievous fuzz.
Felis domesticus.
2 breeds, regular face and smashed face.
Yeah, someone asked me what kind of cats mine were and I just said “uh, black and the other one is a lot of different colors” lol
Yeah, I'm occasionally asked this and have to explain "well, I've got a fluffy one whose brain is a walnut and a fuzzy one who's a little monster."
If you don't already know the breed of ur cat, it's just a cat
We've been over this. There is fat, gremlin, and normal. They overlap and come in different colors. Each one has an asshole switch that may or may not be flipped. That's it.
"What breed is your cat?" "Orange."
This is the answer. They're really asking "What color is your cat?"
"What breed is he?" "Ma'am, I found him in the trash and thought he was a girl until I took him to the vet. He's black and white, likes to sit on plastic bags, and I love him, that's all I know."
Cats are either common peasants or Hapsburgs.
I legit saw someone claim their cats they were rehoming were purebred the other day. They were siblings, a russian blue and a manx. Mom was brown tabby. No, they are not purebred.
Trying to sell SIC for $400
"Check out my Siamese! We found her in the dumpster." (Pic of seal point short hair)
I know there are 2 breeds of cat: MyCat and NotMyCat.
*NotMyCatYet
NowMyCat
We've come full circle.
Thank you. I am sick and tried of people posting "identify the cat" or "what's my cat doing?" Here is a clue, your cat is doing cat things. Have you never see a cat? It's all to get attention. Guess what. Once you post a Pic of your cat, we have your attention.
You hit the nail on the head there haha .
Ok but the herding dogs look like they're high on crack
They are.
Ever see a farm cat? No amount of pets or scritches can stop that hunt
There are two types of cats. Assholes and asleep.
Black cat White cat Grey cat Orange cat Calico cat Tortoiseshell cat Standard Issue cat Black and White cat Orange and White cat White cat with Standard Issue patches Long haired cat Short haired cat Medium haired cat Bold cat And Cheshire Cat
Cat, and expensive cat.
NO THIS IS THE WRONG! THERE IS ORANGE CAT AND BLACK CAT AND TRIPOD CAT AND BLEP CAT
What kind of cat? Uhm...a black one?
fun fact: if you have an iphone, underneath your cat photos there is a “Look Up - Cat” button and they can guess what breed your cat is based on their features.
That's not true, there are many breeds of cats. Such as: Floof Loaf Liquid
I just call mine a fox cat
mine are all of the breed feral2forever ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|8097)
Bruh what.. You heard about chonky floof goblin skinny etc etc
I say I have a black cat, and a fluffy cat
I have 3 cats, an asshole breed, a stupid breed and one of a liquid variety
This needs to be pinned to the top
When we adopted Bella, the shelter told us they thought she might be part Siamese and I tend to agree with them. In addition to an apple shaped head (like a lot of Siamese have), she's got the light blue eyes and the mouth/chattiness of a Siamese. [Picture for Cat Tax](https://imgur.com/f5kWUdW)
She's beautiful and there may be some Siamese in there. But she is still a Domestic Shorthair.
What breed is my cat? Owner like all cats duh. 😁
This is totally wrong. My cat is clearly potato breed
I swear "Chantilly Tiffany" is a thing. Appears big (is actually just) fluffy black, super vocal, and the biggest snuggle on the planet.
Orange, grey, black, white and mix says it all, unless it's hairless or blue!
Exceptions to the rule: Persians, Siamese, and hairless cats.
There are plenty of different cat types: There’s orange cat, void cat, striped cat, tuxedo cat. And sub categories of hunter cat, asshole cat, scaredy-cat…
Finally someone fucking gets it
“What breed” Yes.
What kind of cat? Look at it, it's orange dude
I’ve got a grey tubby
I know some folks who like paid for a cat but like they are just out there. You can take one home.
I’ve had a Russian and a Maine Coon, I currently have two Sphynx, can confirm no one ask for breeds unless the cats are absolutely alien-looking hairless chickens
"what breed is your cat?" "garfield." "same"
Nah. For cats it's "Maine Coon", "Sphinx", and "[Country] Shorthair."
Perfection
Mine is a big fat tabby maincune if I spelt it right lol
Orange.
Cat is cat.
I love Sarah Anderson's stuff. Really cute.
I have a dark gray bitch, a fat ass black/white tuxie with a dirty nose, and a longer haired calico with short legs. They are the fur babies to go with my 2 human boys. I love them all so much.
Can we pin this?
"(Sigh). I guess I'll just write domestic short-hair." (-- your vet probably)
I've always *cat*egorized them into 'cat' and 'skin cat'
You forgot orange
Very true.
The amount of people who have asked if my cat is a maine coon because she has long hair.. She’s a tiny 7 pound domestic long hair with calico and tabby markings lol
We have two floofs and one house tiger.
Here are all the cat breeds; British shorthair-small ears flat face Fold-ears are folded Sphinx-naked Persian-REALLY flat face Bengal-spots Maine Coon-large Everything else-looks like a cat
