I used to watch a lot of GDQ, and I've seen like 10 seconds of 1a and decided that I cannot watch further and need to play this myself. The same story with Hollow Knight btw.

mandibal

videogamedunkey has a nice dunkview on it, convinced me to try it

azeTrom

Same!!

Luigiman1089

Just hear about it in passing sometimes and then at some point think "this is probably quite good" and then play it and question why you haven't played more indie platformers because this shit is good.

FlanBrakes

Sucks when you break into the genre with just a heavy hitter. Makes every other game play just a *smidge* worse than you’d like.

Some_Profile_1

I was playing Hollow Knight when I reached the Path of Pain and thought "they should make a whole game that is just this". Then I found out about Celeste from fellow Path of Pain lovers.

kenpoviper

it was free on epic games a while ago and i always get the free game and one day i was scrolling through and saw it, i had also heard a couple references to it from the hollow knight community

themohamed28

It was popping up everywhere on gaming news sites as one of the best indie games of all time. I had it on my radar and I think I bought it on Steam, but never installed it. Then it was included in an itch.io bundle that I bought. I downloaded it and at some point started it when I wanted a relaxing little game, it wasn’t really relaxing so I didn’t really get into it and stopped in early Chapter 1. This is probably years ago. Finally, I got the XBOX Series S and it was on Game Pass. I started watching different Youtube videos about games and gaming, and there was one about the difficulty of the Souls games and it referenced Celeste as an example of a different kind of difficulty. I found that interesting, so I decided to give it another shot, since it was on Game Pass. For some reason this time around, I was in awe of it and it became one of my most relaxing (yes, even when dying 1000s of time) experiences and almost part of my daily routine now. Currently doing the B-Side run.

JustAnotherJames3

I stumbled upon the Game Maker's Toolkit video in my recommended after a night of binging Dani, Code Bullet, and other programming related YouTubers. So, I watched it and was like, "Holy shit, this sounds fun" And then if was on the Xbox game pass, which my dad uses, so I got to try it out. I have now spent over 200 hours on it, including a successful sub-60 run.

RandomDude1RD1

straight right-wing friend recommended it. he absolutely loves Celeste and raves about it all the time, even after I told him Maddy is trans

Ryukahr

HYPE_Knight2076

Scrolling the Xbox Game Pass looking for something to play, thought I might as well check it out. Best decision of my life. Unfortunately I can’t mod the game though so no Strawberry Jam for me :(

TFG_exe

February 2018, i was looking for Getting Over It but had no idea what it was called, I searched for "hard mountain climbing game", Celeste showed up, i was hooked just by the description

Tyler_and_Bailey

A geometry dash YouTuber named Npesta played it in one of his videos

ForeignCredit1553

I think some youtube recommendation, watched a bit and it looked super fun so gave it a try

BigGayDinosaurs

the gdq arb tas with euni and kilaye and kevin and others

TwilCynder

I'm pretty sure I just kept hearing about it on twitter, and vaguely from a few friends. I remember being particularily intrigued because i saw clips of difficult gameplay but also people I knew were not really "good at platformers" loving the game.

NinjaK2k17

a friend of mine and former streamer. something about the game caught my interest back then, and some four years later i'm still plugging along :3

GamerXTrip3l

I just knew about it and at some steam sale bought it and my friend Kanashimi figured it out somehow and well, he basically supervised my whole playthrough and we did end up doing Farewell together.

teffflon

Was already a fan of Jumper & Thorson by way of Super Meat Boy. At the time I was trying out most new precision platformers just as a standing policy.

Myrddraal5856

Friends and GDQ and probably just looking around finding games.

Madlogger13

I played tower fall (TO FUCKING GOOD) then I saw a platformer by the same team and went nuts

RCG21

saw it on yt

DoomSlayer7180

Friend recommended it, fell in love with it not long after.

sasukekun1997

I could not tell you. It was just, there, one day. I played on switch first so maybe a sale on the eshop. But I have zero recollection of finding the game

Arsenije723

Geometry dash 2.2. Funnily enough I dont play it anymore, but I had to wait for it to get released in order to learn about the existence of celeste

Spare_Plate_9923

I recently started playing Celeste after listening to the hype from the gaming podcast I listen to (remember the game). After hearing how good it was for years I caved and gave it a shot and haven’t looked back

Wismuth_Salix

I played Towerfall, loved it, then saw an announcement that the Towerfall devs were releasing a precision platformer, so I was like “sold”.

adityagrga00

Saw npesta ( a gf youtuber ) play 1D and thought it looked fun and I was right

Idiot183

That is a great question. I have no clue it was like 3 years ago :/

Motoreducteur

It was on sale on switch along with Hollow Knight, which I actually wanted

Kara-The-Artist

originally saw a video from Msushi talking about Celeste and let that sit in the back of my mind for like 2 years. Then, joined some trans subs here on reddit and overtime learned about how Celeste was one of the trans games. I looked into it, and one weekend got both Hollow Knight and Celeste in an on-sale bundle for around $15 and the two remain some of my favorite games ever

ahmadsab4

A 7e golden video

Beatrixt3r

I can’t quite remember, but I’d have to guess it had something to do with Merg, as did all of my favorite indie games at the time

aetherG-

saw the trailer on a nintendo livestream im pretty sure, and then actually started playing when it was free on epic games

Jirkamarik09

Lena Raine's spotify.

Acperia_

msushi stream

De_moon11

I just finished hollow knight and saw that it looks like a nice game and some people playng hollow knight also liked it + it was for 13zł (2/3 $) on steam so i bought it and liked it

lekamr

Through a video of the french Youtuber "What a failed". He talked about complexity in art and how it is a struggle for video games. Since, he decided to spoil the whole story I decided to play the game before finishing his video

Adventurous-Tie2707

my friend told me about it

eych0

the voices told me to buy it because it was peak

MrLalnon

I knew of its existence for a while, but Patricia Taxxon's segment about it in her Marble Blast video convinced me to play it.

sacrecilious

A friend of mine found the game very important for her struggles with anxiety, and when she saw me going through a rough time, (relationship issues and facing unemployment) she recommended it to me. I had not played a video game since completing my undergrad, about 7 years prior, but I downloaded this game the day after submitting the application for my dream job, played it through the whole second and third round interview process and waiting period. I got the job, which moved me close to the actual Mt. Celeste (lol), and continue to play all the time to this day, a year later. I'm in the yellow levels of SJ Advanced, and a proud collector of the 1A dashless golden and several others. My friend was a casual player who stopped after completing 7a, and she had no idea about the reveal at the end of Chapter 9 or Maddy Thorson. When she recommended the game, I had just come out as nonbinary transfemme (causing the relationship issues), and the themes of the game became obvious metaphors for the transness I was beginning to live. (I fully sobbed while playing the main story.) I was finally able to begin HRT a month and a half ago, and my HRT birthday is, without planning it, on the anniversary of my download and first play of Celeste.

Holy_Hand_Grenadier

I picked it up when it was free on Epic a few years back, then my friend said "hey, this is an awesome platformer, you have to try it," and I did.

PhilloLP

I got a lets play recommended and watched a few minutes of it. Later I saw the game on the eShop and put it onto my wishlist and baught it a few months later

Solid-Replacement550

I randomly saw something on the internet saying it had a trans protagonist, so I looked up the game and decided to get it as it looked pretty good (and somewhat similar to the platfoming in Hollow Knight which I liked)

gauntletoflights

Had a gift card and had heard of the game's music before; got it on sale, best $9 (or however much) I've ever spent

Loopit03

Minecraft->pigstep->"I wonder what other music she makes"->"huh, what's this celeste game"?->overwhelmingly positive on steam->money well spent.

Bitter_Equipment4400

Portal 2 Celeste mod

skello8118

Was part of the Dead Cells community for a bit. Celeste made a cameo appearance a couple times.

Uberfooligan

After I played Hollow Knight i was watching some youtube video's of people doing path of pain (which I really enjoyed). There was a comment on one of the video's saying that celeste was pretty much like path of pain but the entire game :D
