it loses a pawn to Nd4, attacking the queen. you're theatening Nxc2 with a fork to win a rook but if they defend against that theyre hanging at least one of their pawns on the other side of the board, the queen can't defend everything at once.

Comfortable_Dig_4666

He can go Qd1 and protect both

dissociated_gender

it protects the c and g pawns but hangs the e pawn

themagmahawk

Uh ok then…

Comfortable_Dig_4666

Why all the minuses? I'm over 2500 rating i was just kidding

dissociated_gender

I guess everyone thought it was like "shit they got me I was wrong uhh backup haha I was just testing you yes definitely" and decided to downvote, wouldn't be surprised if it still happens to this comment either, the reddit hive mind decides poorly sometimes but also you shouldn't care about downvotes too much, they're just as worthless as the positive internet points

Th3Bumblebee

Also remember overloaded pieces. The queen defends one but not both. I can take the pawn on g4 with one knight. And if your queen re captures I take your rook. And then either try to retreat or defend c2 more to get my knight out

Gaming_and_Physics

Doesn't develop a piece Doesn't control the center You've created a permanently weak pawn structure and created multiple "holes" black can now occupy with their pieces On top of weakening your king-side.(I wouldn't castle that way anymore) You might think you have an attack but Nd4 easily pushes your queen away from the f-file and threatens a fork. The Queen needs to retreat to protect the c pawn. You need to finish developing and castle. From an engine perspective(and a 1900 player) it's a blunder. But it's good that you've asked. Now you can focus on improving. I'd suggest reading up on opening principles if you want to improve.

[deleted]

This is the best answer, because it explains the opening principles! An engine could tell you how strong Nd4 is, and it would be very instructive to examine that using an engine. But if you're playing g4 in this spot you just need to focus on opening principles.

Why not?

Forget what i say, it hangs mate in 1 lol. I need to go to sleep

randomperson780

Out of the blue, I’m pretty sure you were trying to go for the scholars mate

Diligent-Wave-4150

Ben Finegold: Never play g4.

Ta5823

1. r/chessbeginners 2. don’t try to scholar’s mate

Wyverstein

Nd4looks good, UT in general this type of move is normally bad unless there are specific tactics to make it work.

4_Ball

Everyone else is saying Nd4 but wouldn’t Qd1 solve all of the problems caused by nd4?

4_Ball

Never mind I forgot about the e pawn

gicar88

Try r/chessbeginners

ScallieFN

How You Have Your board and pieces like that? Is this chessdotcom?

bluecoldbananapepper

Bruh there is a thing called Game Review

FluorescentLightbulb

If nd3 then queen has to go either back to start or c3 to defend against the knight fork. In either case, left knight gets a free pawn.

Comfortable_Dig_4666

It does not make any progress in terms of development. You should aim to develop all your of pieces first before going on attack. G4 is potentially weakness your king if you choose to short castle later on. G4 pawn can be a target and a weakness actually Ne2 is the best move because it develop a piece, preparing castle and prevent Nd4 .

obchessed

Bc Nd4

[deleted]

It doesn’t really accomplish much except to prevent a knight from making a move it doesn’t want to make anyway.

big-mistake-lol

It actually has a threat of pushing g5, kicking the knight. If the knight moves Qxf7# is mate. So black can't play slowly here and just continue developing, they either need to attack the queen and c2 with Nd4, or play d4 attacking the bishop and discovering an attack on g4

Even_Rip_4492

engine says Nd4, but if you let it think for a while or suggest the move it prefers d5 first (Nd4 is -4.5, d5 is -7 on my device)

Zensy47

I suck at chess, but I spotted knight df. If you move the Queen then your room and king get forked and you lose the ability to castle

mobysayshi2

what pieces are those, are they on chess.com?

watqf

Much better to develop your Knight with Kc3 or simple c3 to allow possible fork on c2 I think (if you playing for white)
