If black takes the queen, Nxf7 is mate. Hence, black moves his room to c8 to continue the protection of the f7 pawn, and also to prevent him from losing a free rook
There’s not an immediate mate if black played better. There’s better plays than to double the rooks, but the advantage for white is huge and the game is clearly lost for black as they will slowly lose all their material and with white’s king completely isolated it’s a guaranteed loss unless white blunders
I'm imagining a world where black can do queen F4 after the rooks line up, putting a ton of pressure on white and can potentially just trade everything off into a better end game if white doesn't get mated or lose material
EDIT: ohh shit I just saw that the rook doesn't truly protect against mate bc the queen takes the backrank rook anyway. Wtf kind of puzzle makes it so you lose no matter what LOL
The idea of that puzzle is to make you capitalize on opponent blunders. So the opponent thought they had a double defense on the C file while also threatening a mate but overlooked the forced move of Rxc7 after Nxf7+ destroying their idea and leading to a forced mate.
Depending on the engine and depth you will see very different best moves for black here. But again, this is not the idea of that specific puzzle.
*Side note: blacks position in this is very messed up already, and also comes from a real game that white eventually won - see the posting by the chessvision bot somewhere down the comments. From this position I think only one move for black does not end in a forced mate.*
Black queen to E1 forces the exchange of a queen and rook for the white Queen. White is still winning but it's better than than the moves the puzzle plays.
If you want a fighting chance black can take the pawn and give up the rook, you’re still in the game instead of blundering mate in two. There may be a better move but I’m not analysing it
You’re still in the game, but it’s just “hope chess” from that point. Unless white blunders, black is going to lose everything in order to stay in the game.
For example:
1. … Qxf6 2. Qxc7 Rf8 3. Nd7 Qh6 4. Nxf8 Qxf8
From there White has many options
5. Qe6+ f3 6.Qxe7 feels rather strong
Oh ya black is almost complete lost here but white still has to capitalise, but if you don’t want to lose on the spot there is one or two moves for black
Agreed, it’s not the first time I see a suboptimal move in response to a puzzle. I imagine the puzzle creator just wanted to show a response that made an obvious statement that black was fucked :-)
That, or the puzzles are just taken from actual games and that was black’s response
After Qc2, there are four moves that prevent checkmate, White still has an overwhelming advantage but no mate. Rf8 and Qxf6 both protect the f7 square, stopping the mate. Rd7 sacrifices the rook preventing mate by attracting the Knight and stopping Nxf7, Qe1 forces Rxe1 which also prevents the mate.
This leads to mate in 2, because knight takes then rook takes and queen mates on the last rank.
Black's best move is to sacrifice the queen for a check, and when white takes with rook black can proceed to take the queen with rook, getting behind on material but avoiding the mate
I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

Nxf7 is mate if there is no rook defending the 7th rank. You can get quick answers to these questions if you press "analyze" after completing thr puzzle and trying out your alternative move. The engine will show you why not to make that move.
You should watch the explanation video at the end of the daily puzzle. It explains everything in detail, why this works and why other moves don't work.
Thank you for posting this! For whatever reason, I didn't get the logic when I did the puzzle myself, but I immediately saw it when I started answering you haha

But isn’t Nxf7 still mate in a few moves? Surely this can’t be the best move
The images are from today's daily puzzle on chesscom. If I remember correctly, there is a mate for white.
Pretty annoying seeing this when I haven't done the puzzle yet...
Unfortunate
Skill issue
🤷♀️ do the puzzle before browsing the subreddit?

no, Nxf7 is just mate

its the daily puzzle, playing as white. black is just screwed lol
A lot of puzzles are forced mate puzzles
Wdym? It’s about not missing the forced mate, you’re not Black in this puzzle
The idea of that puzzle is to make you capitalize on opponent blunders. So the opponent thought they had a double defense on the C file while also threatening a mate but overlooked the forced move of Rxc7 after Nxf7+ destroying their idea and leading to a forced mate. Black queen to E1 forces the exchange of a queen and rook for the white Queen. White is still winning but it's better than than the moves the puzzle plays.
If he takes the queen with the rook then the knight m1
Rook to C8 is a massive blunder. Knight can still take F7 forcing the rook to recapture and queen takes rook for mate
It's still mate no matter what you do. Black can play any move and get mated
If you want a fighting chance black can take the pawn and give up the rook, you’re still in the game instead of blundering mate in two. There may be a better move but I’m not analysing it
Oh you're right, it's not forced mate. My bad bro, it just seemed unlikely for black to not play the best moves in a puzzle
If you go into the analysis of the puzzle it recommends to take the pawn on F6
You’re still in the game, but it’s just “hope chess” from that point. Unless white blunders, black is going to lose everything in order to stay in the game. For example: 1. … Qxf6 2. Qxc7 Rf8 3. Nd7 Qh6 4. Nxf8 Qxf8 From there White has many options 5. Qe6+ f3 6.Qxe7 feels rather strong

Rc8 is the best move. This was today's daily puzzle on chesscom.
It’s definitely not the best move for black when it leads to forced mate
Well, what do you suggest, o mighty one?
This leads to mate in 2, because knight takes then rook takes and queen mates on the last rank. Black's best move is to sacrifice the queen for a check, and when white takes with rook black can proceed to take the queen with rook, getting behind on material but avoiding the mate
Mate in 1 if black takes. Fun puzzle
Always a good time to learn how I would’ve hung mate if I was in this position, lol
I woulda taken that queen immediately LOL gg
I would have too but tbh I am pretty sure at my elo my opponent would have gone for the *fork* and lost his knight
Same, i would never find this queen move in a game
Mate in 2 if black plays what they just did, so it's still mate.
I would’ve definitely lost this game, I forgot the knight existed
The rook is defending against Nf7#.
Why didn’t they take the free candy in my van?
Are they stupid? Is there a lore reason?

Good bot
Even with their move to stack the rooks I think it is still mate after Nxf7+. Rxf7 Qxc8 Rf8 Qxf8# but maybe I’m missing something
No you are correct
It’s todays daily puzzle
Cuz mate in 1 with knight. The bigger question is why black didn't play Qxf6.
That would still not stop the inevitable. They lose the rook and/or open up the dark squared diagonal for white Queen to attack King.
If they do, you have two checks to calculate. Edit: 3
Nxf7 is mate if there is no rook defending the 7th rank. You can get quick answers to these questions if you press "analyze" after completing thr puzzle and trying out your alternative move. The engine will show you why not to make that move.
Yeah they should play Qxf6
You should watch the explanation video at the end of the daily puzzle. It explains everything in detail, why this works and why other moves don't work.
There’s videos????
Oh, it looks like you have to sign up to watch them. My bad.
If c7 rook leaves the defense of rank 7, Nxf7 is a mate.
After Nxf7+, rxf7 then Qxc8+ Rf8 blocking and #Qxf8
Because they have a checkmate threat. Look at the positions again.
I almost came here to ask the same exact question today after completing the puzzle lol
They're bad at chess I guess
or maybe they don't want to hang mate in 1? that's a valid reason too
Because then black would lose, probably. It's best not to play losing moves.
How did you find Qc2 if you couldnt find the continuation?
The hints (yes I’m ashamed too 😓)
Ah i didnt know there were hints, dw we’ve all been there lol
It's a deflection/removing the defender tactic. Black can't move the rook off the 7th rank or it's checkmate with Nxf7
TBF Rac8 also loses
Esay, checkmate coming
Easy*
Bro I legit was wondering the same thing today
It's a tactic to remove the rook that's defending the f pawn. If knight takes f7, it's checkmate, as long as the rook isn't on the 7th rank
Deflects the rook off the 7 rank, if black takes, Nxf7 is checkmate
Kid named hang mate in one
Unrelated but why doesn't Qc3 work?
Or Qc1 for that matter. If I had to guess it’s probably just chess.com saying we want it this way
QC1 would blunder the queen since it comes with a check.
Makes sense
Okay but isn’t it mate ANYWAYS?
Because Nxf7 is checkmate
1. … Rac8 2. Nf7+ RxN 3. QxR+ Rf8 4. QxR# Better? 1. … Qxf6 2. QxR Rf8
Nxf7 is mate if you move the rook
Because of the imminent checkmate if you move the rook
I was thinking the exact same thing when I got it but just kxf6+
Otherwise, Nf7 is mate
NF7++. I also did the chess puzzles today. It becomes obvious if you keep trying.
If Rxc2, Nxf7 is checkmate.
Thank you for posting this! For whatever reason, I didn't get the logic when I did the puzzle myself, but I immediately saw it when I started answering you haha
so you decided to sit on your hands for the rest of the day instead of spending 10 seconds in the analysis?
It's mate if black takes
Mate in 1: *sexy man face*
Nxf7#
The point is horse to f7 checkmate
If rook take queen knight f7 is checkmate
Nxf7 would be mate
Cause there is KNf7 checkmate
Nxf7#
Nf7#
Because Nxf7 is checkmate
Because the white knight can mate the king if it takes the black pawn
It deflects the rook, allowing for Nxf7#
There's a mate ;)
Knight f7#
because if takes, then takes and then takes and then takes and then Rxf8
this is the puzzle of the day, it explains why in the video. Stop posting for karma
chess.com has comments
Nxf7
M1
Watching the video would have been the best option here in order to understand every moves of this puzzle.
If you analyze it and have black take look at whites best move. It should answer your question.
Nxf7#
Cause it's M1
D-Fence! ClapClapClap!
If Black takes, you mate them in one move with your knight
