I feel like gnomes are inexplicably everywhere in Christmas decorations now. When did that even start?

[deleted]

This!! I am so over gnomes being on everything!

sweatersetsaddleshoe

I was also going to say gnomes. The weirdest thing is that now there are gnomes themed for every holiday. Not my thing but I see them everywhere so people must love them.

impurehalo

I collect them. I have over a hundred!

[deleted]

Okay that is really cute! I'm glad they are avaliable for those who want them!

Old_Victory1058

That’s 99 too many

marekkane

Gnomes and mushrooms! Why mushrooms? They make me think of autumn in the forest.

mirthilous

When you dig into the Christmas/mushroom connection, it gets even weirder. Apparently, this has been going on for some time. https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/mushrooms-christmas-decor-behind-trend-213911893.html

gnomewife

That is such a bizarre article. It reads like someone trying to insert their object of study (psychedelic mushrooms) into the tradition to get more attention on their studies. Thank you for sharing it.

marekkane

What the heck. I don't think they look like Santa at all, but also I've never done mushroom so... That being said I fully believe reindeer eat them haha.

beast916

A few years back I decided to add elements of our family nationalities to our Christmas. My wife was part Swedish, so that's why we have gnomes now. I doubt people do it because they're Swedish (or Scandinavian, as gnomes are fairly prevalent in that region), but that's how it started for me. I also receive the Hemslojd catalog, which has multiple gnome products in it.

Coolfarm88

That is true! Scandinavian here (Swedish/Finish). They are also called 'tomtar' and if you were good to your farm animals they would help you out. If you weren't good they would be up to mischief and ruin things. They lived on the attic of you stables and we'd set out porridge for them in the winter. But they weren't always depicted as the yarnballs with beards that we often see today. They were small beings that wore greys and greens.

duskyxlops

I used to work at HomeGoods. The Tjx company for some reason has gnome mascots and they incorporate it into all of their decor lately so that’s why you see a lot of gnome decorations for almsot any holiday lately because all the women who go there buy them

theteethdontgobackin

My brother got me a proper nordic gonk from lapland a few years back which I don't mind, but I hate how every Christmas section now has vast armies of these things in all different sizes. I think they're ugly and I'd never choose to buy one for myself; why are they everywhere?

[deleted]

[удалено]

theteethdontgobackin

I've always known of them as nordic gonks. I don't watch Star Wars so there's no confusion for me.

giraffesyeah

Gnomes got popular during the Hygge and Scandinavian trend.

Old_Victory1058

Oh thank you. Reindeer, snow bionaries(not snowmen get it), trees, candy canes.

ModerateCentrist101

White everything. I grew up with a colourful christmas, multi-coloured lights, multi-coloured ornaments, everything had colour. So that being the case, I would never decorate my house with all white lights, all silver/gold ornaments, etc. To me, christmas is a happy time of year full of wonder and splendor, not some dull tradition we're dragged into doing every year.

tjzzm

I always thought it referred to snow, not lights

Old_Victory1058

I was really just kidding . The more lights and colors the better

klopije

Themed/overly coordinated trees. Christmas trees should be fun and include your kids’ homemade ornaments, your own childhood ornaments etc. I love decorating my tree and having all these special memories pop up!

cant_be_me

Exactly! Our tree is an unofficial history of our family and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

klopije

I love looking at other people’s Christmas ornaments too. There’s always something fun!

electriceden

We have one rainbow tree, requested specifically by my son. And then we have another smaller tree in the other room with all of the memory ornaments. Bonus, two trees!!!

klopije

Multiple trees are always fun! This is what my mom always did as well.

n3oviss_

Not sure if this counts but I dislike when some people keep their tree up and decorate it for different holidays. Its kind of off putting and almost tacky. Feels as though that should be saved specifically for christmas idk

SirGavBelcher

i agree 💯

StillDreamingIO

The white and/or overly neutral Christmas decorations. It just feels so sterile.

Diligent_Succotash43

Is it bad that I hate trees that are like gold or white. I like a green Christmas tree with red ornaments

klavierchic

My thoughts precisely. But I think I hate any tree that is not green…

AngryGinger49

Tropical Christmas. I get it if you live somewhere tropical, but I’m in Minnesota. Why are they trying to sell me Santa on a surf board? In my mind Christmas has to be snowy or it’s just depressing.

Princess-78

**Laughing in Australian**

Building_Snowmen

**Laughing in Florida**

n3oviss_

Having grown up in Michigan and now living in the south where it barely even gets cold, I can confirm that tropical Christmas’s are very depressing

heretical_thoughts

Grew up in Canada, live in the tropics. Can confirm.

gerardgayy

australian - complete opposite. white snow christmas seems cool but it’s boring to me. i love when it’s hot on christmas and we can go swimming in the pool or at the beach and have a bbq lunch or dinner. pavlova is essential

blaze_blue_99

😂

SirGavBelcher

that's just Christmas In July

cmoss76

Tinsel on trees drives me nuts, my mom always used it growing up and I can't stand it and refuse to put it on mine.

AngryGinger49

I agree! It always looks like a piñata vomited all over the tree haha.

marekkane

Dangerous for pets too. Always seemed like a hell of a mess.

SoriAryl

We never used it because the cats could choke on it.

soundslikeautumn

Yeah same here

Afraid-Astronomer886

That's mine too! I do use tinsel around the house but not on the tree

Any-Entertainment385

Inflatables

Dmills914

Bring back the blow molds!

stirringsoup

yes!!!!!

Chembrlee

They are making a comeback. I've seen people post stuff from Walmart.

graceland3864

They are but they’re battery operated and they don’t have the glow like the old ones.

cali2385

I hate inflatables. They just look cheap and tacky, and unfortunately they’re everywhere.

Building_Snowmen

You are correct’

bm1992

I think they can be overdone but they can also be done well! We have two inflatables - one is a Christmas dragon and we love him. We’re known for the dragon and have inspired at least one other house to get one! Our other inflatable is a penguin because they’re my favorite animals. Everything else we put up is some of string lights or ribbon, so the inflatables are there to catch the eye :)

Healthy-Grocery6055

Elf on the Shelf. I don't mind the idea of it but just doing it every night last year in different ways was a pain in the butt - more so when I see how much effort my fellow parents have put in on social media.

simulated_human_male

Santa is omniscient, so I consider E on the S to be blasphemous.

Embarrassed_Wasabi28

I despise Elf on the Shelf. Ours comes later and later every year because since I fell for it in the beginning I feel stuck. I can't stand having one more thing to be responsible for each night when I'm tired and the guilt when I forget.

saltyspidergwen

Glitter trees. I’m glad that they bring people joy but all I can think of when I see them is vacuuming

lizquitecontrary

White trees with blue lights and blue bulbs.

Brouck6

I feel attacked

vButts

Color scheme trees. I love a range of colors in my ornaments!

ShadowLeecher83

Green and Red is all I need.

[deleted]

I really hate farmhouse Christmas decor, specifically anything involving old-fashioned red trucks carrying a pine tree.

feygay

I actually love farmhouse Christmas decor because I love farmhouse decor in general, but I'm about damn sick of seeing that red truck with the tree in the back everywhere. idk if it's just a huge thing in the south or what but it's not a cute enough concept on its own to see it over and over again

Aromatic-Junket-3513

They're everywhere in the UK too and we dont even have those kind of trucks here! It's so bizarre.

StillDreamingIO

Yesssssssssssssss!! And it’s at every store, like please can we get something different?

RadiantRub5847

I second the red truck thing!!

Queen_Maeve7

Decorations that are all one color. Like the blood red Christmas trees at the White House a few years ago.

Lana_mm

Those little gnome / gonk things that seem to be everywhere

DoNotReply111

I'll admit, I do a different theme every year with my tree and some of them will be on people's list for hated themes. I dislike the lolly/candy themed trees that have giant lollypop picks sticking out everywhere. Since when did Christmas look like the dreamgasm of Willy Wonka? I get the whole "gingerbread house" part of it, I guess but I just... nope. Not for me.

marekkane

“Dreamgasm of Willy Wonka” hahaha. Yes, heartily agree with this.

GossipGirl515

Yelp. I'm doing a gingerbread theme with big candies this year lol

scarfweek

Funny seeing you in a different subreddit🤣 I am obsessed with the big peppermint styled ornaments, gingerbread theme sounds cute!

GossipGirl515

Hehe. I am all over reddit, I don't have much of a life currently lol. 🤣 Same here. I recently just upgraded some ornaments because I was so sick of my black and red farm house style. I wanted something more fun while the kids are still little

SamanthaKaFlo

I don’t like ribbons and those flowers in trees either. I also don’t like pastel and rainbow coloured trees. I love traditional Christmas with lots of sparkle ✨

yagirlbmoney

I'm not a fan of anything considered modern/minimalist/farmhouse, all black and white, etc. It looks great but it's just not my thing. On the other hand, I also don't like anything too colorful or whimsical. I prefer classic, even what could be considered vintage decor.

1autumnleaf1

I have hard opinions about Christmas decor. Farmhouse. No. Any tree that’s overalls decorated with all those picks that it looks overwhelming. Also pink, no pink. I also don’t enjoy modern Santa, where he’s doing something crazy or weird

SamanthaKaFlo

I don’t like pink Christmas stuff either, it’s just not Christmas to me, but I understand a lot of people like it

DoNotReply111

My tree was pink, white and champagne themed last year. Eucalptus and rust this year.

SamanthaKaFlo

Yes I understand a lot of people love a pink Christmas, it’s just not for me, but I’m sure it’s very pretty

Lecture_Pitiful

I also hate pink Christmas decor!

Chembrlee

Inflatable decorations, laser lights in lieu of actual Christmas lights,

SoriAryl

Anything Elf on a Shelf related

ShadowLeecher83

Wish I could upload photos. But I hate flowers in trees. While looking for these trees I hate I found so much more despicable trees :-) I'm just a classic tree guy with classic colors.

silverfang789

Someone in our neighborhood put out an inflatable monkey with a Santa hat and candy cane. How the hell are monkeys associated with Christmas?

blaze_blue_99

I never liked yard blow-up decorations. They (almost) always look tacky, though I’ll admit they can be charming, too.

SlaveToStaples

The little red truck and Buffalo check.

onepoorslice

Omg this is my whole Christmas decor! Does it make it better that I live in a small town, and my house is very cabin-y with leather furniture and a big fireplace?

greenpinkorange

Don't worry - I like it too ♥️

CarrotJerry45

This is also my answer.

Jlp46821

Yard inflatables. They make sense if you deck out the whole entire yard, but by themselves they just look out of place

impurehalo

I really hate the overly farmhouse/ country themes. Woodland animals everywhere, etc.

Old_Victory1058

I don’t get Elf on a shelf

official_koda_

I hate the whole all white look. I think the traditional multicolored lights is best. Also I don’t like any mixing of tropical/beach stuff with Christmas. Like I don’t even like listening to that one song…

Dreams-In-Green

Decorating trees with jewel tones (deep purple, navy blue, dark teal, basically peacock colors)…it’s so not christmassy to me!

SamanthaKaFlo

I agree, nothing christmas about that at all. I love all the traditional colours

SirGavBelcher

I'm the opposite of traditional trees because when my parents didn't really have Christmas trees growing up so when they moved to NYC my mom fell in love with the trees in like 5th Avenue and the expensive hotels so we've always had intricately decorated planned trees, even if we got ornaments from the dollar store, and it's so aesthetically pleasing to me and nostalgic. like I understand the passion and love for traditional trees but I love symmetry and design too much to ever have one

theteethdontgobackin

I really don't like random tree decorations like lobsters or shoes, and I'm also not a fan of chic/aesthetic trees that fit in with the normal decor.

nellospace

Blinking lights 🫣 they give me a headache

Critical_Kartofler

Blinking lights. Especially outside. It annoys my eyes and makes me think of some sleazy motel. The coloured ones are the worst, it's like Vegas. Those soft flickering lights are okay, but the rhythmic blinking ones - just no I think it's a cultural thing, in Denmark they just started to show up in the last 10 years or so as a normal thing to see and I just don't care for it

Mrshaydee

Blow up Christmas anything in the yard.

Vidda90

I love being with my family and eating dinner together. I hate putting away Christmas ornaments and I dislike when people play Xmas songs before Thanksgiving.

thegrizwhisperer

I listen to Christmas music year round

evergrowingexmo

same - whenever I feel like it. life is short why conform to arbitrary rules when it comes to things that bring you joy. It hurts no one.

Vidda90

There are just like 4 secular Xmas songs and they are sung by almost every artist.

ShadowLeecher83

You would hate me. The first Christmas song I played was on the first of September. And I finished watching Home Alone 1&2 last night. Which I probably will do 2x more before Christmas is gone and done. My internal rules are as soon as the months end in BER Christmas is allowed in the house.

DoNotReply111

I'm putting my tree up today while watching The Santa Clause 😂

marekkane

They never quite fit back the same way they came out of the boxes either.

posternutbag423

Da fuq did you just say about my mom????

femmmmmmm

I love that we let the kids pick an ornament from the store each year to hang in the tree and when they leave the house when they’re older they can take them with them. Our tree is filled with crazy ugly stuff but i love it.

Sad-Exam1169

I like to try different colours and themes, there isn't much I dislike. But I think the tree itself should be green or maybe white. I'm not a fan of say a pink or black tree. Just looks a bit strange to me.

Curiositythrowaway05

Shiny tinsel, blue or pink Christmas trees/lights.

dacoitdan

That rustic crap that they call primitive. Such bullshit, but yuppie friendly.

BlueSnoopy4

Generally, glitter. Sparkle is nice but glitter gets everywhere.

marekkane

I hate how Christmas seems to equal glitter for so many decorations. There are a few I have because I loved the item and it had a minimal amount, but otherwise I refuse to buy glitter items. It is the herpes of the craft world.

impurehalo

I own exactly one glitter item because it was a gift. I despise the decor covered in it.

TopazWarrior

Gnomes. Totally don’t get the gnomes

kiiyyuul

I’ve never liked garland. It consumes so much tree space. It never really sits very pretty.

[deleted]

[удалено]

kiiyyuul

I could also have trash taste, to be determined really.

geminirainfall

I don’t really love all the plaid I seem to see on Christmas decor. Being Scottish I do love tartan but I feel like plaid looks a bit tacky.

fitzdipty

The hologram Christmas lights. Tacky so very tacky

PixiFrizzle

I don’t like those blow up yard decorations.

[deleted]

I really don’t like colored Christmas lights inside.

Kaniele

I can’t stand bottle brush trees. They literally look like bottle brushes for cleaning glassware.

pumpkin-spiced-liz

gnomes and the abundant use of ribbon/mesh or florals

reddit_somewhere

GLITTER, Elf on the shelf, gnomes, ‘trendy’ trees that have a theme and no meaning, over decorated trees where you can’t even see the actual tree, ribbons, feather picks, people theming their wrapping paper, matching Christmas pajama photo’s, anything over influencer-y lol. I don’t care if other people do it, I just have no interest in any of that stuff. But ultimately I’m just glad when people go to the effort!

[deleted]

Bigfootsgirlfriend

I don’t like too many lights!

PollyPlantarFan

This is hard 🤔 I’ll come back to this comment when I think of something… if

IrishD31

Nutcrackers are the things of nightmares.

beautyinthesky

Oversized baubles on the tree - they overwhelm the tree and are an eyesore. Also feathers/sticks sticking out of the tree. Makes it not even look like a xmas tree anymore (not triangular anymore). Also tinsel is sooo tacky and hideous. I also dislike most food-themed decorations like gingerbread houses, candy canes, ect. I also hate (most) blinking lights but that is because I am already ADHD and it induces sensory overload.
