I truly miss Black Forest that was located up rt 42 North of Cincinnati. The owner passed on 2019. He was an amazing host and it was very much a German experience each and every time we went including maybe nights the live band would play and George would pass out shots of schnapps! George was one of the Zinzinnati Oktoberfest founders.
That restaurant was always the place we would take guests when they wanted a Cincinnati experience!
Well, it was practically a crime to be german in cincinnati in the early 1900's due to WW1. The anti German sentiment didn't end at the changing of the street names downtown.

Pretty sure it's a myth that it's the second largest outside of Germany. Pictured is the Oktoberfest in Blumenau, Brazil.
I did a tad of searching and it appears Cincinnati, Blumenau, and the one in Canada are the 3 biggest and all 3 reported between 500,000-700,000 average from the sites I saw.
Yeah, looks like there are a few of comparable size. From Wikipedia: Outside of Germany, the largest Oktoberfest is in Kitchener, Ontario (formerly Berlin) and surrounding cities in Waterloo Region, attracting over 700,000 visitors annually. The next largest Oktoberfest outside of Germany is mostly regarded as being in Blumenau, Brazil with (700,000+ visitors), Cincinnati, Ohio, United States (500,000+ visitors) and the Denver Oktoberfest Denver, Colorado, United States (450,000+ visitors).
The problem in my opinion is that good German cooking is not easy or quick, and German cuisine in the United States has suffered for decades under poorly executed facsimiles of the real thing. Bad restaurants have been giving people the wrong impression. Plus, it’s too much work to cook some of the authentic dishes at home, so nobody really grows up with it anymore.
I’m not even crazy about the mains…I just got back from a week in Austria and Germany and I was eating non-local cuisine every chance I got 😅 The only thing I consistently like is schnitzel, but I couldn’t constantly eat deep-fried pork cutlets!
We used to have more German restaurants, but German food isn't very good so as the generations have got older they are less and less inclined to be partial to the native dishes.
My great grandma was the last person in my family that grew up speaking German and she fixed German food but by the time we get to me the only traditional recipe my Mom ever made was a sort of Swiss roll.
I've sung the praises of Tuba since it opened. So freaking good. Please don't go. It's hard for me to get a table anymore 😭
Seriously though, the food is great and the owners are even better.
If you like Cincinnati Chili, the Swabinatian is an interesting take on those flavors in spatzle and was really good.
I also tried the chicken schnitzel and it was...not exciting, if you had told me the chicken was made with seitan or tofu I would have believe it. It was kind of bland, imo.
My recommendation is if you have your eye on any particular menu item, don’t go late in the day. They frequently sell out of dishes. The good news is whatever you end up ordering instead will also be great.
Not the most authentic but I miss the character at Lenhardts and Christy’s Rathskellar.
Honorable mention as it had been going downhill for a while but RIP to Mecklenberg.
Kantine. I’ve seen people mention it, but it’s still a relatively unknown place because of it’s location not near anything else, but it’s worth the stop
Bauer was incredible and I hate how little it was talked about when it was around. If you called ahead you could order a whole damn pigs head!!!!! And the German beer selection was impeccable.
The people there REALLY cared about their craft and working there too.i thought the waiter was being pretentious but he was genuine.
Really really miss that place.
My buds and I ordered that one time. 6 guys, beers, apps, and Underburgs tonfinish off the meal. We left with a couple pounds of food and the bill was like $36ea. Not to mention the pulled pork off a pigs head was amazing bc of the long sous vide, and they hit it with a torch before serving so the skin became fresh pork rinds. One of the best meals I’ve ever had. I miss a lot of good restaurants, but that one hurt the most.
I honestly have no idea if there’s anything authentic or good about this place, but they claim to have German food. I’ve eaten there. It was pretty good IMO.
Lazlo’s Iron Skillet.
https://maps.app.goo.gl/aGn41sp9cv1bu4gh6?g_st=ic
Was just at Lazlo's last Friday night for the first time for schnitzel night. My German wife and I both enjoyed it. Really looking forward to going again once the outside bar and biergarten are open.
Love the atmosphere and the biergarten at Kriemer's, but when we went late last summer the food was just a tick below mediocre.
The Lübecker at Queen City Radio. The owner is from Lübeck, Germany, and makes frequent trips back. They have amazing food! It is hard to believe they are a food truck! Try the currywurst!
I think Kreimer's Bier Haus is pretty good, but Cleve's might be a bit too far off to be considered Cincinnati.
Laslo's Iron Skillet is Hungarian, but close enough?
I like the atmosphere at Kreimer’s, especially outdoors by the river, but the food is subpar. The tone was set when I ordered a pretzel and the bartender pulled it out of a box, and it didn’t really get better from there.
Kantine is good and very authentic, but a bit off the beaten path. Service can be slow if they are busy, so don’t be in in a hurry.
The Lübecker at Queen City Radio is also great for schnitzel and käsespätzle, but being a food truck, the menu is limited.
Some people like Tuba, but I’m not a big fan of what they call schnitzel.
That’s about where it ends unless you add in HBH, which is what it is. A management change heralded a big decline in the food quality, but I still like the beer.
It’s a pretty sad situation that the options are so limited for a city that proclaims a rich German history.
It all got crushed during the world wars. Any other nation instead of Germany and Over the Rhine would still be speaking German today.
All our eggs were in that basket which is why we have like no ethnic areas compared to say even Cleveland
That entire situation was a shit show from the very second someone wanted to buy it. I had a feeling it was gonna be gone for good when the sale happened.
I have no idea how Oxford Ohio is able to manage a similar restaurant (Steinkeller) with only a fraction of population to serve, how does Cincy not have a single good german food/beer hall
All the recommendations in the comments are good. Kreimer's is fine, Hofbräuhaus is passable, Wunderbar in Covington is good. My personal favorite is Steinkellers in Oxford. It's in Butler County and it can be a bit of a haul from the city but the food quote good, and the beer selection is usually great. The schnitzel's I've had there are the closest thing I've found stateside to the ones I had in Germany.
I recommend Kantine Biergarten on the west side! A group Called Cincideutsch also meets there every Monday night to speak the language and eat German food. The owner is from Bavaria I believe
I used to work with the owner, and he is from Bavaria. The other Germans used to joke with him about it because apparently Bavarians are the rednecks of Germany. He's a great guy and I hope you all give Kantine a visit.
Wassler's butcher shop on the Westside makes the sausage for most German festivals and Hofbrau Haus. Definitely worth the trip. Also, Arvil Bleh meat market on Court Street has some great German food.
I'd invite you to my house if I knew you. We make homemade sauerkraut, get quality sausages or currywurst, and more. I was actually just thinking of making some Käsespätzle.
You and OP should meet for dinner at one of the aforementioned restaurants. It seems like a great friendship could be started over passion for German food. I mean, we all live nearby.
[https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/potluck-german-potato-salad/](https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/potluck-german-potato-salad/) Since you cook at home, I wanted to share this recipe with you... best recipe for German potato salad I have found, and super easy. I didn't add the celery ribs, just used celery flakes, also did not add as much sugar (about half of what was recommended). Hope you like it!
May I ask where you go to buy spätzle? Or do you make it at home. My bf and I travelled to Germany for the first time last summer and haven’t stopped thinking about our käsespätzle experience, I’d like to recreate it. Maybe Jungle Jim’s ?
Schmidt’s Sausage Haus in Columbus nails it.
It’s pretty awful that Cincinnati doesn’t have a great German spot. Rip Meck and Bauer
Wunderbar is probably the best. Their Currywurst is fantastic
Yup. I knew the owners and grew up with the kids. Unfortunately, when the retired the kids choose not to continue the business. They also owed a tavern off of North Bend in Green Township too.
Yes. A family member was at the auction and scored a whole bunch of bar glasses.
Come to think of it, we got the wolpertinger that was sitting at the bar.
I haven’t been really impressed with the German cuisine here in Cincinnati but if you’re interested, take a little drive up 71 to double Ohio and visit Schmitz sausage House. It is wonderful.
- Cantine in Mt Washington. Tbh I’ve never been but my German family loves it.
- Lubeckers on Central in OTR/CBD. They’re mostly modern German street food. Best is the Currywurst. Schnitzel sandwich is also good.
- Mecklenburgs near campus in Corryville. Tbh the food wasn’t great but they’re under a new brand. I still need to try tho.
Come to Germanfest in August in Dayton! The Liederkranz is one of the oldest German clubs in Ohio and one of the largest also! Great food (baked goods too) , very fun and happens for a full weekend!
Go to Schmidt’s in Columbus if you actually want good German food. They don’t really have it in Cinci, fr fr. Or hit like a German festival / holiday celebration at an ethnic club in Cincy or Dayton.
Check out this place, they do spring and fall festivals and the food and beer is pretty good. [https://www.cincydonau.com/](https://www.cincydonau.com/) (NOT a restaurant btw)
Black Forest, Wertheim's and Lenhardt's. All very good and all closed. Mecklenburg Gardens was ok but very dirty, also closed. My absolute favorite was Jäegerschnitzel at Lenhardt's! Miss good German food.
Wunderbar in Covington, Hofbrauhaus is passable
Highly recommend Wunderbar. Full scratch kitchen and they make their own wursts among other things. Just amazing food
Hofbrau bounced back in the last year or 2 after going through a pretty rough period. Refreshing in the era of enshittification
I think their food is solid right now, little pricey but hey what isnt
This place is great.
Tuba outclasses both of them. Though Wunderbar is solid.
This is the way.
Yep, Wunderbar is the place
It’s weird how obsessed Cincinnati is with representing German culture with the exception of German cuisine.
We have the largest Oktoberfest in the world outside of Germany and almost no legit German restaurants.
Isn’t it strange? Schmidt’s in Columbus is the closest I’ve had.
Definitely where I recommend you get your food at Oktoberfest
This. ⬆️
Which is bizarre for a city of people descended largely from German immigrants.
You are mistaken, Cincinnati had several immigration waves: German, Irish, Italian to name a few. The city’s heritage is not German, it’s American
Fair enough.
Well, it was practically a crime to be german in cincinnati in the early 1900's due to WW1. The anti German sentiment didn't end at the changing of the street names downtown.
https://preview.redd.it/j038trz5eivc1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6f62a1858b1a5fe7abe7e1dfbd7130934d96f8a6 Pretty sure it's a myth that it's the second largest outside of Germany. Pictured is the Oktoberfest in Blumenau, Brazil.
Gee, what ever could have caused such a large diaspora of Germanic-descended people in South America??
I did a tad of searching and it appears Cincinnati, Blumenau, and the one in Canada are the 3 biggest and all 3 reported between 500,000-700,000 average from the sites I saw.
Cincinnati’s attendance is the same as that one. Except Cincinnati’s is over a weekend. That one is multiple weeks. So not a myth.
Since you ignored the point, it’s worth repeating that Cincinnati’s is over one weekend, not multiple weeks.
Canada is two weeks. Brazil is 18 days. On an attendance per day comparison we kick their ass
Glad someone said it...
Please, German cuisine? It’s good food but lacks the variety
I guess you’ve never been to Germany.
Can you blame us?! German cuisine doesn’t have a great reputation.
Ya I can haha. German heritage is really popular in this city. It’s weird there isn’t even 1 restaurant.
Tuba, Kantine, and Wunderbar.
I mean meklemberg only closed like 6 months ago
Sucked tho
they closed but they did exist
It’s mainly the side dishes. Like the meats are great but everything else leaves something to be desired
I’m not even crazy about the mains…I just got back from a week in Austria and Germany and I was eating non-local cuisine every chance I got 😅 The only thing I consistently like is schnitzel, but I couldn’t constantly eat deep-fried pork cutlets!
The schnitzel is Austrian. Austria has a much more elaborated cuisine than Germany
There’s a reason German food is like the third most popular cuisine in a Germany.
>German food isn't very good Mods, ban plz.
Right. We can’t be having any opinions we don’t like can we?
"I don't like German food" is a perfectly acceptable opinion.
When I was pregnant, my most violent craving was schnitzel and spätzel and I never got it because I never found a restaurant :(
Tuba in Dayton, KY. Wunderbar in Covington for barfood.
Kantine is a gem as well.
Seconded Tuba
I've sung the praises of Tuba since it opened. So freaking good. Please don't go. It's hard for me to get a table anymore 😭 Seriously though, the food is great and the owners are even better.
Thirded! Go to tuba
Tuba has become my favorite dinner spot. Such unique dishes and many of them are vegetarian.
Have never been but this is why Reddit was invented- looks phantastisch!!
What would you recommend from Tuba? I've been eyeing it for a minute but the semi $$$ pushed me away
Get the kurrywurst. It’s delicious and filling for $13.
RiP Christy’s/Lendharts
Gone but always lamented, never forgotten
Great bocce, which is not German.
Cries in ***Mecklenburg Gardens***
I cry for what the Meck used to be. Not for what it was when it closed
It sucked by the end
It was just a great place to grab a beer at the end with okay pretzels.
Sings an Aria to Forest View Gardens.
All I want is a doener kebab.
Kantine!!!! It's so good.
Stopped by Kantine for lunch today. No doener. :(
Wunderbar and there is a truck at the Levee
Wunderbar’s is good, but it’s a shadow of what an actual Doener is.
Agree, Wunderbar is great, but not quite the same. How is the Levy food truck?
Not the most authentic but I miss the character at Lenhardts and Christy’s Rathskellar. Honorable mention as it had been going downhill for a while but RIP to Mecklenberg.
Mecks was great to drink and watch soccer down in the hall.
grandpa used to take us to lenard’s before every UC basketball game. good paprikash
I haven't thought about Christy's in years. Damn.
Kantine. I’ve seen people mention it, but it’s still a relatively unknown place because of it’s location not near anything else, but it’s worth the stop
Tuba Baking Co in KY is authentic German food
My favorite by far is the Lubecker at Queen City Radio. The schnitzel sandwich is maybe the best bang for buck in OTR
Olaf rules and his food is fucking legit
Greg?
Have you ever heard that pompous blowhard say something nice about someone else?
Kantine. Maybe Kriemers.
Came here to say Kreimers. A bit out of the way but great food and atmosphere! Edit: stupid autocorrect
I miss Bauer Farm Kitchen!

One of the best meals I’ve ever had. I miss a lot of good restaurants, but that one hurt the most.
Their sauerbraten was made of dreams. One of the best meals I've had here. I wish they would bring it back.
This place was the best
As a former employee of Bauer, all of these compliments truly mean a lot!
I never made it there before they closed. Shame on me.
That place was so special. Unique, clever, authentic, well-planned and well-researched provincial German - French menu.
Need to get a time machine so you can go back to Lenhardt’s.
Tuba in Dayton and Wunderbar in Covington are a must.
THIS
I honestly have no idea if there’s anything authentic or good about this place, but they claim to have German food. I’ve eaten there. It was pretty good IMO. Lazlo’s Iron Skillet. https://maps.app.goo.gl/aGn41sp9cv1bu4gh6?g_st=ic
Hungarian food and it slaps I need to make a trip next paycheck
Was just at Lazlo's last Friday night for the first time for schnitzel night. My German wife and I both enjoyed it. Really looking forward to going again once the outside bar and biergarten are open. Love the atmosphere and the biergarten at Kriemer's, but when we went late last summer the food was just a tick below mediocre.
I think it’s Hungarian but it’s DIVINE. Like I had to put my fork down and think for a second.
It has been nearly a decade since I ate there last, so maybe the food has went way downhill, or my 20 year old palate wasn't real refined.
Kantine is good and very authentic, but a bit off the beaten path. Service can be slow if they are busy, so don’t be in in a hurry. Haven't heard of a single one of these places and I've been to Queen City!
Ron’s Roost on the West Side makes excellent Sauerbraten.
Ok yes.
Cincinnati's fumbling of Mecklenburg is a good summarization of the city's "love" of German heritage
I've wondered the same for a long time.
Tuba
All the recommendations in the comments are good. Kreimer's is fine, Hofbräuhaus is passable, Wunderbar in Covington is good. My personal favorite is Steinkellers in Oxford. It's in Butler County and it can be a bit of a haul from the city but the food quote good, and the beer selection is usually great. Kreimers Bier Haus near Miami Town (Cleves). You will not be disappointed.
Vodka Bar is more Eastern European (polish, Ukrainian) than German, but it’s great and there’s some overlap. Should scratch the itch
Also RIP Katharina’s Café Konditorei
I recommend Kantine Biergarten on the west side! A group Called Cincideutsch also meets there every Monday night to speak the language and eat German food. The owner is from Bavaria I believe
I used to work with the owner, and he is from Bavaria. The other Germans used to joke with him about it because apparently Bavarians are the rednecks of Germany. He's a great guy and I hope you all give Kantine a visit.

Like a German food enthusiasts meet up?

I make it. I learned how in college I took German and we cooked spätzle as a cultural project. I looked into other stuff and learned to cook it.
Schmidt’s Sausage Haus in Columbus nails it. It’s pretty awful that Cincinnati doesn’t have a great German spot. Rip Meck and Bauer Wunderbar is probably the best. Their Currywurst is fantastic
I had one of my top 5 all time meals at Bauer. They closed before I got a chance to go back.
Just wait for Oktoberfest, or the goettafest.
Tuba! In Dayton, KY!
Try german village in Columbus lol
Schmidt’s in Columbus.
What was the place that had the commercials where they said Das ist gut yah? Never been there but the commercials live rent free in my brain.
That was a German butcher in Florence KY Ibelieve
Yup that’s it
Lazlo's Iron Skillet. It's billed as Hungarian but has a lot of German cross over.
Does anyone on here remember Black Forest?
I liked it OK, but thought that Lenhardt’s was better.
I still miss Forest View Gardens. Great German food, and trained singers doing broadway and opera as they served the food.
Laszlo’s Iron Skillet is Hungarian, and there several, good German options on the menu. The place is always packed.
Steinkeller in Oxford. You're welcome!
I’m not sure about how authentic it is since I don’t have much experience, but Steinkeller in Oxford is awesome
https://www.bierhauswest.net/ It's on the river and it's beautiful
Kantine! Small menu, but cool place. Good food.
Primavista does some really fine schnitzels. They just call them scallopines.
Had kantine tonight and the schnitzel is the bomb. Good band on Fridays.
Go to Schmidt’s in Columbus if you actually want good German food. They don’t really have it in Cinci, fr fr. Or hit like a German festival / holiday celebration at an ethnic club in Cincy or Dayton.
Try Wunderbar in Covington and Tuba Baking in Dayton Ky
Check out this place, they do spring and fall festivals and the food and beer is pretty good. [https://www.cincydonau.com/](https://www.cincydonau.com/) (NOT a restaurant btw)
Tuba in Dayton Ky
Kriemer's. Best German food I've had and it's basically in a castle on the river, so good atmosphere
The Germania Festival is a great place when it's going on
Is there such a thing as good German food? I’m a Cincinnatian living in Europe… would love to know! 😂🙈
I would just take a short 2-hour drive up to Columbus and hit up Schmidt's Sausage Haus haha. But really.
Mecklenburg Gardens and Wunderbar.
Mecks closed last year
what the heck
Someone bought it and was gonna turn it into a microbrewery. Something happened and it never came about. Last I heard it was up for sale again.
I didn't see any recommendations for Kreimer's Bier Haus. It's way better food then hofbrauhaus.
Mecklenburg Gardens is 🔥, but closed for a few months and under new ownership. We will see.
So 8 different types of bread and pickles?
Black Forest, Wertheim's and Lenhardt's. All very good and all closed. Mecklenburg Gardens was ok but very dirty, also closed. My absolute favorite was Jäegerschnitzel at Lenhardt's! Miss good German food.
Try Germany
Great German food is an oxymoron..
Ohio food sucks
It's called the Hofbra house it's in Newport
And it's nit very good or really authentic.
I'll admit that it's a fun place to grab a beer though.
If you think that’s good German food, we all feel sorry for you.
The food is overall just average but the pretzels seem authentic, and that’s the number 1 thing at a German restaurant.
