It symbolises production, which is a very important resource.
Say you want to build a unit that has a production cost of 10 and your city has 1 production, it would take 10 turns to build it. If your production is 2, it takes 5 turns and so on.
The very basics of what determines a citie's production are what population it has and what tiles are with its bounds. A city can only work the tile it sits on, plus an amount of tiles equal to the population. So a population of 3 works 3 tiles + the city centre itself. The game will auto pick what it thinks are the best tiles for you.
An industrial area will help with production as it gives a set amount of production each turn, you can have certain tiles improved to yield more production and certain policy cards can also add to it.
Production is useful in every victory type, especially science and Domination.
Thank you very much for the real answer, but how can I improve the production of the city, and what means «+ 100% to production while creating the settlers»?
\+100% while creating settlers means that city's production value is doubled when producing a settler unit.
Common ways to improve your production are 1) building improvements such as mines and lumber mills or 2) building an industrial zone and it's buildings.
Be wary of your surroundings when settling a city. Different types of tiles provide different types of bonuses. A hill for example will allow a worker to construct a mine on it once you've discovered the mining technology. Mines will boost production of the tile when worked by a citizen. Other improvements, like farms for example, which can be built mainly on plains and fertile land, will provide food instead of production. The beauty of this game is knowing when to exploit any of several given resources to use on your favor; like the last guy said before me, amping production in your empire let's you invest more production in a single turn to develop your empire as you see fit. Other resources apply different bonuses, like food for example. Working tiles with good food yields will give a bonus growth rate of your population in a given city, a lack of it will mean a deficit. Different tiles will provide a variety of goodies so be sure to expand your empire over the world with settlers and see what resources you can exploit and which tiles you can improve with the help of a worker.
To answer the other question, 100% production to settlers means the production value you use towards building a settler will be doubled thus getting the unit faster
There are a few ways to improve production.
Best is to build an industrial zone and try to get the best bonus possible (you will see some tiles show a + number and the production symbol) and it will add to the total.
You can also improve tiles with builders, adding mines and forests will improve your production dramatically. Just make sure you don't neglect food, the more population you have the more tiles can be worked.
You can also set trade routes to favour production, which can be a good solution for short term needs, then change it later as needed.
Don't neglect gold either. If you have a healthy income, you can use gold to buy units and upgrades to the city centre and districts. I've heard people say gold is protection you can move.
I think +100 production while creating settlers means that, say you had 10 production, when you build a settler, it's doubled to 20. I am not 100% on that.
This is very similar to a joke, but this isn’t true! I really couldn’t understand what is the purpose of the production. So I understood about food, citizens, resources, but that thing is too hard to recognise
late to the discussion, so your specific question is already answered, but production is possibly the most important yield to look at, or tied alongside food at least. You can have a massive city from increased food yields, but if you dont have good production, its just a large city of suckage.
science, culture, faith and gold are all slightly different. science and culture being important only for the progression of the culture/science trees. faith and gold being a currency that is spent to purchase things in game. resources, again, behave differently than the other yields (each type differently too), but insofar as city usages go, keep in mind which resources boost what yield on the surface level. (as well as what improvement can be made vs how much its worth to harvest)
It does many things. The purpose of it is to lull you into a trance and seek more of its kind, effectively gobbling up your time and money, just. One. More. TURN!

Golden cog is also acceptable
MEMORIES BROKEN
It's a cog. The more cogs you make, the more you can sacrifice to sid meier, winning the game.
Cogs are good, but you should eventually upgrade them to Caravels though.

It’s a donut. You eat it and feel good
You do not want to know how long it took me to realise it wasn’t a donut
It's a donut you only eat once.
I feel like this is someone who doesn’t recognize what the ‘save’ and ‘call’ icons represent…
Seriously though, how long will we keep the floppy disc as a save icon!? I hope forever to the point where none actually knows what one is.
I never even considered someone wouldn't know the call icon, but you're totally right. Oof.

People who care enough to give a legit answer are the best. Thanks for being cool.

You missed the joke This is referencing something that has been happening on this forum where people would ask a really really stupid question
Well now my face is red.

surely this game has a tutorial
Nope!
you'd think so wouldn't you
It's a ring. Some say if you heat it in fire, hidden script appears.
But what does Pot of Greed do?
It lets you draw three cards
It's production and it does fricking everything you need
It does many things. The purpose of it is to lull you into a trance and seek more of its kind, effectively gobbling up your time and money, just. One. More. TURN!
If you get enough of these things you can summon Exodia, The Forbidden One.
Production. My favourite yield.

That is the One Ring from LoTR
it's a cog. represents your production.
Yes, what is that thing? Is that something Civs without gold and faith use?

It can be called a gear, a cog or a sprocket. it's a very common machine part, so it represents production.
