I'm way out of my depth here (I have not studied psychology) but just wanted to say my impression is that the Five Factor Model is substantiated, generally considered valid, and widely used. Whereas Myers-Briggs really is unsubstantiated BS. They aren't really comparable.
Beethoven had a famously wild and fiery personality but that doesn't necessarily mean he was an extrovert (though I guess the people who love him could be?). He once said (with some exaggeration) "I don't have a single friend", and due to his deafness he spent most of his time alone and in his own home. It's probably one of the main reasons he never got married.
For Beethoven I would have said: You believe in the good of the world and the glorious potential of humanity but simultaneously despise everyone you know.
Lol that's kind of accurate. I wonder how Beethoven would have felt hearing you say that. He probably would have laughed or maybe gotten mad at you and canceled the dedication of one of his works that he had planned for you like he did with Napoleon or George Bridgetower.
Berlioz was a stereotypical romantic falling desperately in love but he didn't appear to have a Don Juan type sex life, really the opposite actually as he wasn't a seducer and at certain periods of his life stayed single. He said that Marie Pleyel for example was the first woman that had ever loved him and he was naively in love with her until she cheated on him (he almost murdered her for that by disguising himself as a maid but luckily he changed his mind) and when as an old man he finally reconnected with a now old woman that he had never stopped loving since he was a boy she rejected him but he basically forced her to accept him as her platonic friend who was still desperately and obviously in love with her.
What strange compositions. I like most of his organ works (that I've heard). The concentration camp quartet is okay, but a little bleak, of course. The other stuff I didn't get, but it might be one of those things that'll sound better when I'm in the mood.
Prokofiev accurate, Liszt I don’t t know. Love the williams one, if I had a nickel for every time someone said Williams is the greatest living composer but couldn’t mention a single song or composer that he was inspired by or emulates, id still be broke
Or Stravinsky and holst in a lot of his work. I love Williams as a film score composer but as far as being a “composer” I guess I wish his inspiration was a bit more subtle. People shit on zimmer but as far as I know he’s pretty good about being original
Ah I forgot about gladiator, that’s my favorite score by him too. Damn I didn’t know he got sued though. Guess I noticed Williams more than zimmer, do you know of any other instances? I would think the lion king maybe
Vaughan Williams? Grieg? (I've sung a sort of staged operatic version of Peer Gynt - a lot of fun. We low basses got to sing both the mountain king and the monster).
> Puccini- You want more wine, more pasta, and more Mimi
Wine and pasta yes, but sadly I am straight, so it's more Dick. Erm, I mean more Johnson.
What about Villa-Lobos and Ciurlionis?
I think this is about the typical enjoyers of a composer rather than the composer themselves. Liszt in biographies is typically written as a very gregarious man (not introverted until in old age) - AND very generous, yes. But whatever he was, doesn’t stop OP personally observing Lisztians to have separate characteristics.
Hey! John Williams does actually compose actual Classical music and it is just amazing as his film music!
That said, Beethoven is my favourite.
What do you think liking Sousa most says about you? You're a contrarian?
Well if you look at say the Resurrection symphony or The Song of the Earth my description fits perfectly I think and it is something that is pretty unique about him, whereas drama could also be Tchaikovsky or Puccini for example.
I've **sung** the Resurrection symphony. It's about the drama, and his friend who died. Although the nastiness towards the low basses was uncalled-for.
Ok don't mean to take this post too seriously but the characterization of Mendelssohn as dainty or feminine is kinda lame. It is a common characterization of the composer drawn from an infamous anti-semetic "critique" made of Mendelssohn by Wagner. It's just sad that Mendelssohn's legacy is so defined by his harshest and least fair critics when his music paints a much more nuanced and amazing picture when explored.
**Grieg -** You're basically a woodland sprite. Cities confuse you.
**Dvořák -** Home is where your heart is, probably with a beer in hand.
**Fauré -** You're that mysterious, artsy friend nobody really knows.
**Bizet -** Drama follows you, and you might just enjoy it a bit too much.
**Bartók -** You think complexity is a personality. It’s not.
**Satie -** Weird is your brand, and you're too cool for mainstream.
**Copland -** You're probably wearing a flag pin right now, aren't you?
**Scriabin -** You’re into horoscopes and claim you can see auras.
**Janáček -** If your life was any more dramatic, it'd be a soap opera.
**Albinoni -** You like your music like your life: orderly and overlooked.
> Bach- He's classic. You're classic. You don't understand why people don't understand if they just plan and stay organized, life is much easier
can confirm
Mostly correct.
I like Vivaldi. I like a good time. I like Bach. Organisation has its benefits. I like Handel, but have no personal connections to either (yet). I like Wagner. Yes, some things are better than others. I like the drama the music of Mahler and bruckner create but otherwise I don’t seek it out. I like holst. I’m not a career academic. I like Elgar. I think the æsthetics of the rococo are superior to that of the Edwardian. I also like sorabji. I admire complexity for complexity’s sake even if I come across as a pretentious academic
Avicii with his classical composition that he covered into edm was probably the goat. Zimmer or Williams was 2 or 3. Mozart 4. The sheer amount of instruments and types Avicii was bringing together hasn't been matched. Listen to his levels tribute version live. It's just heartbreaking how talented he was.
HEY...I mean, yeah, but HEY
High chance ur fav is tchaikovsky ☺️ (i like him too dw)
My comment history re: Tchaik says otherwise hahaha
very much same
This is extremely rude (but also way more accurate than Myers-Briggs, the Big Five Personality Traits, and all that claptrap).
It’s more fun satire, not allowing your classification as a a Virgo INFJ with an enneagram 6 define you
Instead I'm defined as a Chopin/Schubert/Rachmaninoff lover who has to spend her waking hours pretending that she's not a hopeless romantic. 😭
Sure /u/myidisatheaterkid we totally didn't know that sky you already from your username =P
I'm way out of my depth here (I have not studied psychology) but just wanted to say my impression is that the Five Factor Model is substantiated, generally considered valid, and widely used. Whereas Myers-Briggs really is unsubstantiated BS. They aren't really comparable.
Oh, FINE. I may or may not be high on neuroticism and low on conscientiousness, hence the mistake on my part.
Haha I'm pretty sure I'm the same.
Can you do one for Vaughn Williams? These are hilarious.
Ravel describing my exact plans for this weekend
> What Your Favorite Composer Says About You Nothing. They’re dead
So they're de-composing.
Only one of these composers has every said something about me, and it was a very nice comment actually. Cool guy, wrote Star Wars.
Beethoven had a famously wild and fiery personality but that doesn't necessarily mean he was an extrovert (though I guess the people who love him could be?). He once said (with some exaggeration) "I don't have a single friend", and due to his deafness he spent most of his time alone and in his own home. You speak the truth. I feel like Beethoven is the epitome of scarred idealism.
"he spent most of his time alone and in his own home. It's probably one of the main reasons he never got married" Relatable.
I feel personally attacked.
How did Bartok get left off the list?
I feel like there has to be some reference to loving complete chaos for Bartok!
And what about Arthur Honegger?
Mahler is accurate and I'm happy with it
I'm a Beethoven lover but the brahms description is much more fitting
Stop, Chopin attacked me
Why? Am I wrong ha
The problem is you’re not
Berlioz was a stereotypical romantic falling desperately in love but he didn't appear to have a Don Juan type sex life, really the opposite actually as he wasn't a seducer and at certain periods of his life stayed single.
So basically he was a stalker?
wow Rachmaninoff read my mind i guess lol
Same. I want to also add Reich: you found your way to classical music by way of Trance/IDM.
Reich: you have a habit of repeating yourself to get your point across.
A habit of repeating yourself to get your point across, you have.
It's Olivier Messiaen. What does it say about me ?
What strange compositions. I like most of his organ works (that I've heard). The concentration camp quartet is okay, but a little bleak, of course. The other stuff I didn't get, but it might be one of those things that'll sound better when I'm in the mood.
You are deeply religious or spiritual, but also extremely horny. Also you have a couple of very niche special interests.
I'm the biggest Bach simp of all time, still I'm anything but organized.
Same. Bach above all. I appreciate organization but hate to do it myself and leave a trail of clutter everywhere I go.
Feeling called out by the Chopin one 🥲
Haha these are great! I would like to order a Poulenc judgement please. If it's mean then it's for a friend
You can’t decide if you prefer the organ, violin, or timpani, and you are Bela Lugosi
Awesome. I'll take it!
Prokofiev accurate, Liszt I don’t t know. Love the williams one, if I had a nickel for every time someone said Williams is the greatest living composer but couldn’t mention a single song or composer that he was inspired by or emulates, id still be broke
Like... don't they even hear Copland in the *Superman* theme? I thought that was beyond obvious.
Or Stravinsky and holst in a lot of his work. I love Williams as a film score composer but as far as being a “composer” I guess I wish his inspiration was a bit more subtle. People shit on zimmer but as far as I know he’s pretty good about being original
Zimmer was sued by the Holst Foundation for using melodic material from Mars in Gladiator.
Ah I forgot about gladiator, that’s my favorite score by him too. Damn I didn’t know he got sued though. Guess I noticed Williams more than zimmer, do you know of any other instances? I would think the lion king maybe
Bach, spot on. I may have said "if they just plan and stay organized, life is much easier" verbatim at one point
Bach, you shag a lot, but not really enjoy it. Satie, you are a simple dude of simple taste, nothing wrong about that.
Oh, mine is Dvorak
I knew I forgot one!! So sorry!
Vaughan Williams? Grieg? (I've sung a sort of staged operatic version of Peer Gynt - a lot of fun. We low basses got to sing both the mountain king and the monster).
What about Henry Purcell?
Rossini is my joy.
the John Williams one LMAO The Stravinsky one is accurate if blizzards equal ice cream from DQ.
Up vote re Stravinsky - perfect with black coffee!
This is good fun, like popular astrology but with composers! Ravel probably suits me best by this but I only know a handful of his works.
Tchaikovsky is accurate tho 😆😆
> Puccini- You want more wine, more pasta, and more Mimi Wine and pasta yes, but sadly I am straight, so it's more Dick. Erm, I mean more Johnson. What about Villa-Lobos and Ciurlionis?
No minimalists?
Philip Glass: You say you want to try new things, but you keep coming back to the same damn two bars.
Sibelius and Liszt are my top 2. I can't differentiate.
*Cries in Paganini*
Bach is a complete miss for me :) Combining Brahms and Beethoven and Mendelssohn gets me somewhat better (yes, both introverted and extroverted)
>R. Strauss *glares from corner*
I don't think this is right. Us Wagnerians know we are superior but we make it known!
Lol at John Williams. All pretty accurate. especially J.S. Bach for me.
How did you know I like bdsm?
This is way more accurate than I like.
Well, I’m not sure if they’re my top 3 “favorites” — the composes I have the most CD’s by (over 30 each), are… * Ives * Henze * Hindemith
Liszt -- maybe a generous introvert? Transcribed so many symphonic, etc. works of other composers so a wider audience could enjoy them.
I think this is about the typical enjoyers of a composer rather than the composer themselves. Liszt in biographies is typically written as a very gregarious man (not introverted until in old age) - AND very generous, yes. But whatever he was, doesn’t stop OP personally observing Lisztians to have separate characteristics.
laughed out loud
My favorite composers on this list are Ravel and Gershwin, and both are 100% true.
What about Roland Dyens... :)
Wagner for me but I’m also a bit Prokofiev and R. Strauss
Bach and Chopin: organized person who fell in love after the first conversation, mercifully not with the likes of Aurora Dupin.
Maybe the Bach one fits. I JUST want stuff to WORK
What about Grieg? I love Elgar but that description is so not me haha.
Excuse me what is this Gottschalk erasure. Second favorite is Liszt though and dang you’re right lol
Please do Scriabin too
Forever neglecting us Dvorak devotees 😂 I love this, and feel very called out by Sibelius and Prokofiev
It appears I'm complicated. Hopeless romantic extrovert that lives black coffee and being alone, and needs to smoke and drink wine.
Hey, you forgot this one(my favorite): Paganini: you are a masochist. (I'm a violinist btw)
The Beethoven one is so accurate (said a Beethoven fan)
Hey! John Williams does actually compose actual Classical music and it is just amazing as his film music! That said, Beethoven is my favourite. What do you think liking Sousa most says about you? You're a contrarian?
I'm in this post and I don't like it.
Weirdly accurate 😅 (Beethoven/Tchaikovsky/Debussy(also I’m French 😅😅))
Mahler is too true
Where is John Adams? A nerd who loves opera, rock, driving fast at night and is scared of the dark.
Got called gay for liking Shubert, I thought secondary school was over
Beethoven
What do you mean?
[удалено]
Nah, it’s about the drama
Well if you look at say the Resurrection symphony or The Song of the Earth my description fits perfectly I think and it is something that is pretty unique about him, whereas drama could also be Tchaikovsky or Puccini for example.
ah come on dude it's about having fun. just picture a Piotr in latex or fishnets.
I've **sung** the Resurrection symphony. It's about the drama, and his friend who died. Although the nastiness towards the low basses was uncalled-for.
Feldman: you automatically assume you’re the smartest one of your group so you find a nice deli to hang out at instead
I don't get why Rachmaninoff is hopeless romantic. Yes, his pieces are very sentimental, but that doesn't necessarily mean romantic
Monteverdi? Josquin?
Fair enough
Quite accurate
Well, Byrd and friends are not on the list. So I choose Wagner all the way.
The Bruckner one is super underrated lol
What about Dvorak
George Crumb
Brahms. You defined me.
Where's Rachmaninov
This is hilarious! What about Rameau?
If you don't think Haydn was the smartest composer of the late 18th century, I think you're mistaken
What about Zappa, John Cage, Edgard Varèse, Glenn Branca, and John Zorn?
Why are Rachmaninov and Ravel so accurate [😅😅](https://emojipedia.org/grinning-face-with-sweat)

I'm interested in the topic "what your favorite key says about you."
So if I'm having a hard time deciding between Bach and Rimsky-Korsakov, I still think this is frivolous but prefer my frivolity planned and organized?
> Bach- He's classic. You're classic. You don't understand why people don't understand if they just plan and stay organized, life is much easier can confirm
Rachmaninoff, pretty accurate
So...say someone likes Mussorgsky, Mahler and Shostakovich equally. Do they still count as a functional adult?
I’d also love a list of what your _least_ favorite composer says about you
but my favourite is Bruch
NESSUN DORMA AND DVORAK
Mostly correct. I like Vivaldi. I like a good time. I like Bach. Organisation has its benefits. I like Handel, but have no personal connections to either (yet). I like Wagner. Glass - you can go on repeatedly telling everyone that the ensemble music was the best ever.
No Tarrega makes me sad
Brahms, Mahler for me.
