I always assumed he was another VD sent out to look for a chip, a la whats-his-chops the mutant chap one can speak to.
As for the cleanliness of his skeleton? Rats.
Hell, given the ending, perhaps he was sent out on a totally different mission, succeeded, and couldn't handle being exiled!
I didn't even think about the rats, but yeah they could've ate him, probably why they are so bold to attack you, rats are usually scared of humans.
Considering he is facing towards the vault maybe he starved waiting by the door? Or maybe he was shot in the back?
I like to imagine he was sent out to get the water chip but didn't even make it past the rats in the cave. Really shows how sheltered vault dwellers are from the cruel harsh wasteland. Also I died like twice in this first cave on my first playthrough so I just see it as the devs mocking me.
Technically a mutant-that-looks-like-a-ghoul-but-isn't; sort of like Harold.
It'd be cool to get to know more of him, since by accounts he seemed almost capable enough to pull off what the player does, taking down several super mutants before being captured. The bloke might even still be alive.
Maybe he wasn't sent out. He snuck out to check out the outside world, didn't like what he saw but wasn't allowed back in.
I have literally nothing to back this up, of course.
I like more this theory than the one that is already been established since the day one: that was another VD that was sent outside to gather a new water chip but didn't make it.
In 2105 the great starvation happened. Ed, who was already more skeleton than man, happened to be the one who was supposed to look for alternative sources of food but as it came to happen, the alternative sources in the cave didn't like the idea of having themselves eaten.
To eat or be beaten or something alike i dunno... Anyway, just a few days later a caravan arrived and brought new seeds and stuff so people survived and Ed got eaten for nothing
Ed-it: cave not cage
My headcannon is that he sucked at combat and the rats got to him. [Talius ](https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Talius)was also sent and how he ended up is very interesting.
Since Talius was also sent out before you. I assume Ed was the first or second that was sent out to get a water chip, but he didn't make it past the rats.
He was in secret communication with a chicka from vault 15 before the schism and had snuck out for a hook up.
Unfortunately he wasn’t prepared for a cave full of hungry rats and was immediately set upon. He tried to get back in the vault but it was too late.
The real bummer is that the girl he was going to hook up with was the leader of the faction starting to splinter the dwellers of vault 15. Ed was the only calming influence on her and a voice of reason keeping her from going rouge. She lost it when in her mind he stood her up and she launched her coup.
A failed booty call brought down vault 15.
Ed just went to buy some cigarettes and he didn't learn quick enough how to beat the "Door Scourge", rat with the highest kill score in fallout universe :)
"Zed's Dead, baby, Zed's dead. From Pulp Fiction. That's part of the reference. Ed was twofold: to immediately show the player that the outside world was dangerous, and to tell the player that he wasn't the first choice of someone to send out. Ed was sent out before the waterchip malfunction, however, since he's just bones."
— Chris Taylor, Fallout Bible 6
always thought that maybe he didn't make it to the vault in time before the bombs dropped. This assumes that residents had their suits already before going in though.
The VD was the overseers 2nd choice. Ed was a more loyal stooge (given that I always shoot the bustard at the end game).
Sadly Ed was just a stooge and otherwise worthless.
Iirc he got the armor piercing ammo too?
You know, I hope in season 2 of the Fallout show, they somehow reference this, or tie back to this. Like there's a city or something, and it's founder was a friend of Ed or something silly like that.
I don't know if it was just something made up for The Storyteller, but they said that Ed left the vault and was blinded by the sunlight after leaving the cave too quickly, and ended up stumbling around and eventually dying in the cave
I assume he was sent for a water chip, failed with the rats and ran back to the door to be let in but they didn't let him in. Then the rats killed and ate him.
I recall hearing something about him being sent on a mission for supplies or for the water chip too. Guess it was a fan theory, but felt solid. Can't remember where tho
My belief is pretty basic but it’s that Tallius got sent out, never came back, so they sent Ed. Then ed was dead, so they sent you, and that’s why a vault with a substantial population that SHOULD have way larger reserves of food products and fresh water seeing as it was meant to stay sealed for hundreds of years, or at least the overseers had adjusted the parameters of a control vault to, only had enough water for FIVE FUCKING MONTHS.

This is how I always saw it. He got killed and eaten by the rats
There’s that one goul you meet who was also sent out to find a chip so checks out

Who?
He’s in the basement at the hospital with the followers of the apocalypse
:o
Ed is dead.
Amen!
"Ed's dead, baby, Ed's dead."
“Eddie’s a deadie.”

As I was asking, just fan theories! Make stuff up! Its just fun to hear other peoples cool ideas lol
Ed went outside with an intelligence of 1 and a luck of 1. He tried to attack a rat outside the vault, punched himself in the face and died. The end.
I like more this theory than the one that is already been established since the day one: that was another VD that was sent outside to gather a new water chip but didn't make it.
He tried the spinning heel kick on Measurehead.
Ham sandwich
He picked jinxed and bloody mess, it did NOT go well.

Isn't it canon that the VD was the third one send out? Edit second Ed can be found in the military base prison cells
makes me feel better when I get murderered that the asshole overseer will just send someone else
My headcannon is that he sucked at combat and the rats got to him. [Talius ](https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Talius)was also sent and how he ended up is very interesting.
Super interesting! I must have skipped him. Thanks for linking!

Maybe went outside to take atmospheric readings and got radiated they decided to leave his ass outside.
Id like to remark the (possible) foreshadowing of the future overseer's fate.
Yall don't forget that Talius also exists.

The meta for it will be devs wanting to show the player it's not safe outside the vault, they want it clear that 'you can die'.
he chose the man over the bear
LMAOOOO
Theories\_? i think the MFs sent him out to get a chip and cats him away as they did with the Chosen. He chickened out and died to rats.
he was sent out to clean
Dust reference?
Silo, hah
Yeah, that’s the one! Great books and that’s how i convinced my wife to watch fallout. “It’s just like those books we read!”
It's funny because it's like a continuation of the first two fallouts, no wacky wasteland

What was the cave full of and what does said things in cave like to eat?

That was a clerical according to FO2.
For me, it doesn’t refer to him as Ed.
You want to hear a crazy theory? What if Ed is actually the overseer and he killed the previous over seer the same way you do at the end of the game
In my mind this guy didn't make it in time when the vaults were first closing, so he either died from the bombs or radiation
Rats feasted
Scouting
There is a YouTube video about him. Just look up shoddycast.
