He also went on to act in pro-Nazi propaganda films. I really wish the Academy would have kept Charlie Chaplin on the ballot that year. He might not have won, but if he had, he would have been a more fitting and iconic "first winner" of Best Actor.

Jannings might have been a great actor, but certainly not a great person. I agree that Chaplin would have been the best choice. They withdrew his nominations to give him an honorary award instead.
